The funniest thing to take away from all of this, from my perspective as an Apple hater, is that the Note 7 actually worked 100% after the usb killer while on the iPhone the port was broken.

EAP for the older iphones you should have gotten the ipad camera connection kit as the 30 pin to lighting adapter dosent do data!
You can build one with a royer inverter plus a rectifier, a sidac or gas tube and a few 1.4kv MMLCs. Basic theory is it takes 5V and turns it to hv to charge the capacitor then the gas tube or sidac drops a 1.4kv pulse through the data rails. The voltage needs to be high enough to breach the coupling caps. Can also target the 5v rail.

It's not that the phones have a protection against this, it because the phones doesn't give enough charge to the USBKill 2.0 to begin with, the tiny spark you see is just not enough.
Main reason is because solder on the phones is small and fragile, Little heat with melt it, That's probably what happened.

+Anon User Hey mate, electronics engineer (apprentice) here. My company recently had to design USB-chargers for special industrial application and I've read the USB specification a bit, especially when it comes to charging phones. I think I can clear things up a bit.
First of all: both dedicated chargers and your computer deliver 5V on USB (there are some rare 20V chargers but those are not mainstream yet). There is no thing such as a low-voltage USB-Port. The reason your phone charges slower on a PC is simple: your phone detects it's connected to a PC and limits the power draw to 500mA (effectively making it a 5V*0.5A = 2.5W charger). If your PC fails at communicating with the iPhone, this power is limited to the even lower 100mA current, hence why a broken cable could still charge, but only slowly. Every phone that wants to comply with the USB standard is doing this in order to protect the port it's charging from.
Second: I have no clue what you're trying to say here, but although the cable was meant to carry around 5V, it can probably carry around 1kV. Cables usually don't fail unless you crazily overvolt them or put them under harsh physical stress. It could have been the failing part here, but because he was using another cable to prove it wasn't charging means that the iPhone must have gotten some of that high voltage.
Third: I never heard of dedicated data cables for mobile phones, especially lower voltage ones, because the only thing that usually changes is the CURRENT. I have a feeling you have no clue what you're talking about.
+Frankie Williams is probably right, something inside the iPhone most likely fried. It could be contacts (solder melting, pin corrosion) or a semiconductor (e.g. protection diode) failing.
voltage doesn´t have anything to do with charging speed.how fast something charges depends solely on the current supplied by the charger.and there is no such thing as 5v cable(have you ever seen how usb to [another type of usb] looks like inside? it´s just a few wires going from one conector to the other one)the amount of current and voltage a cable can transfer is limited only by its size-smaller cable will melt at lower currents than a bigger one.and btw i also grew up in modern age

There also are rubber duckies, which are special trojan usb drives that the computer thinks are a keyboard and the rubber duckie then proceeds to send the contents of the hard drive to the (probably black hat) hacker who left it there.
For added evil, the rubber duckie will also contain the usb killer to fry the PC after the hard drive contents have been sent to the hacker.
