We don't know either. The 'alternate' ending was actually the original ending, and the 'original' ending is the alternate. Just to add to the confusion.
@@tonymines01 Funnily enough that actually eliminates some of my confusion when it comes to childhood memories - since I felt fairly certain that the "alternate" cut was the first one I saw... cementing it as the "original" in my mind. Great memories! I'm so glad that the time was taken to remaster these into the quality they deserve to be viewed in :)

I grew up with just this version of the film as a kid. It wasn't until years later that I found out this was just the Alternate Ending version.
