I had one of 1991, and I'm planning to buy it again because it's the best bike I've ever had, and in 50 years of riding, I had a lot of nice bikes. But this is unique. She stole my heart ❤️
Bough a new one , in 1990 £4250, actually didn’t realise how tall it was , but it was like riding a magic carpet , you could have run over a house brick and never even noticed, i remember riding down kirkstone pass one nite about 1995 ish, with a friend on a Ducati 900 monster , and he couldn’t get anywhere near me , and everything Paul says is correct , he definitely knows that bike , and the front brakes were just for show !!! 🏍🏍👍👍but I kept it 28 years
I had a '91 machine from '05-'11. It was my daily commuting workhorse. Fitted a new reg/rec, a taller seat and repaired the rusty sub-frame. Heavy brute with a heavy clutch and heavy throttle. Good enough for touring with smallish female passenger but can't say I was particularly enthusiastic about the bike. Sold it to a fellah in the next street from me and he's still using it.
I did know these were the TDM engine slightly detuned. I had a TDM it was a very good bike. Anyway I went to Corfu and saw one of these it looked great I took loads of pictures and thought yes maybe on day. Good bike to cover im liking these older bike reviews 👍
Coincidentally, Itchy Boots (Noraly Schoenmaker) has just bought a 1987 Yamaha XT600Z 1VJ Ténéré, originally a 595cc, 43hp single thumper, for her next tour after her accident. Her bike has been rebuilt, customised, and lowered for her. Crucially, it's a simple lightweight bike, because she'll drop it-a lot!
Another blast from the past, thanks Neevesy. The bike sounds great with that Arrow pipe! I opted for the DR 800 back in the day, but, the SuperTen was the one I should have got!
Didn't see this coming! What a classic I love it :) I have a DRZ400 E with FCR carb and fast-cams, K-Tech suspension etc. This has given me the buzz for finishing it off with the exhaust it deserves!
I own and ride my 1990 XTZ750 a lot. I do Enduro rallies on mine (what sometimes is not the smartest idea to compete with 690s/701s :) ). My bike is not a looker, all the panels are cracked, held with tape and stickers. It has character and it is still living the hard offroad life that it, in my opinion, supposed to live. Sadly currently the engine is in pieces, looking for the pieces of the clutch basked spring that decided to explode in the engine at the last rally I did a week ago. Can't wait until I find all the pieces and can put the bike back together again. It is the best bike I have owned over the years.
New 700 tenere is a great bike. And even double the money its not that bad price. If you keep it for 10years its not expensive per year as tenere models keep their resale value.
Been riding mine for the past 7 years. It’s my go to and reliable travel bike. Does everything nicely and most of all very comfortably. Indeed, a 6th gear is missing so I put a smaller rear sprocket to compensate. Mine has a strange flat spot between 2000 and 2200 rpm and still haven’t found a solution to adjust that.
What made the bike great, is that it gave adventure riders exactly what they wanted. Mid weight simplicity that could be repaired on the side of the road with an underseat tool kit and no electronics or sensors
I bought a brand new one back in the day (Red n white) had a twin (stainless) exhaust fabricated for it, dynojetted, had a hoot on it , gearbox wasn’t the slickest, far more poke than an Africa twin, and a friend rode the length of Africa on his XTZ750 with his wife on pillion
Great review and roundup Neevesy! Yep, i also went straight to eBay for digital tyre kicking session. But, i'm just too short (5 9') and without both feet on the ground i immediately loose confidence. The GoPro end shot? haha, been there.
Been riding bikes for over 40 years had cbx1000 r1 GXR1000 Harleys but just to get to work I ones had a DR600 I loved it. That Yamaha makes be want to say to my partner this really we be my last bike!!!
Fantastic bike, really cool, but I'd still choose the XRV750 1 gen Africa Twin over this.. And you can tour Europe on any of these, as we've seen in the case of the Warhorse, and Adam😉
Love the bike. Color scheme screams 80s-90s blockbuster and Im not bejng sarcastic. That said at 5'10" like the owner myself the size of the bike scaries the $^$^ out of me.
I completely agree. I have a 2001 xrv750 africa twin and a 1998 BMW F650 funduro and you don't need all those electronics. They are just potential trouble
Great machine to own and ride, i live in the Pyrénées so a mix of all surfaces, pulls like a Norton Commando from 2k no snatching, and it’ll poodle so to admire the scenery, if I was to replace, it would have to be something special, Cagiva Gran Canyon ??
Sorry, but I'm in this moment actually looking for TDM 850, the 2-nd gen. as an alternative because it is very hard to find XTZ770 in good condition. So I want to put on TDM fork with 21" wheel and it will begin to look less asphalt and more rally-like. In my imagination at least. (By the way, what do think about this idea? I don't use bike in hard, wet mud, my main areas are ground roads and I ride staying in footpegs.) I've heard you were discussing TDM, something about oil drink and 5 valves- I caught this. But what else did you and owner say? Something about reliability of TDM' s engine?
I think it does have the power that it's meant to have (as with most Japanese bikes) but it's just not light. Great looking thing though like most Yamaha's from the 80's/90's.
Neevsey- love the channel and the community here. This question has nothing to do with this latest video, but it is timely. I believe you once said that the 'midsize' Panigales were the spiritual successor to the GSXR-750. Is this now true of the R9 as well? Or do you think it will suffer from being based on a platform with the MT-09 and Tracer, and not being designed from the ground up as a true sportbike?
Thank you and bike owner for video about this Dakar legend!!! But friends, what is with your English?! I can catch only 20- 30 % of your speech 😂 Britain English is the most hard English 😂
I am about to sell my SDR 1290 20 plate and buy an old Hyabusa, no rider modes etc. its all rubbish, mine is in permanent track mode with everything switched off, I'm nearly sixty and long for a straight forward big fast bike, that is a gorgeous bike, none available on auto trader, will try e bay next as your previous respondant says
Ahh, thats the problem with these old beasts. Looks the part, but goes well, like a big lump. I really love old Africas and Teneres just for the looks, but thats about it. I started on a 650 Transalp and its a wonderful little bike, but the suspension is just garbage. And these big things are no better. Yes, everything can be upgraded, but you get the point. Still I would love to have a Tenere or Africa in mint condition. I would put it in my living room on a display and would never ride it. Would hang my freshly washed socks on the handlebars, sit down next to it, drink beer and just enjoy the thing.
I prefer the old bikes to new bikes as they got character and souls , I'm blessed I got a garage full of old big cc endro R bikes from honda and yamaha and a couple old classic 2 stroke enduros from suzuki ,kawasaki and a original little yam dt125lc mk3 tucked away and a new average don't belive the hype tricked up ducati desert x thats no where as reliable as the older bikes 😅
so how many of us think hmm and go straight on to ebay, jut to have a look, after every bike in this series?
Oh yeah, Michael is responsible for me taking a long trip down a GSXR 750 rabbit hole lol… even though I know it’s probably too sporty for me.
Yep, deffo!
Guilty
@@CCitis Michael also responsible for gsxr’s prices went up by 50%
😂😂😂
Yep i got sucked in and got a gsxr750. Best decision ive ever been led into😊
I had one of 1991, and I'm planning to buy it again because it's the best bike I've ever had, and in 50 years of riding, I had a lot of nice bikes. But this is unique. She stole my heart ❤️
One of the most beautiful bikes I have seen so far.. looks stunning!
My first bike was an 89. These weren’t really available in North America so it’s super rare over here. I think it’s the coolest looking bike around.

I remember the launch and hullabaloo. Time has been kind to this one. Enjoyed that,ta.
This channel is really top notch mate. Great work.
My wife has an issue with my point of looking at my bikes when I am not out on them,,☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland, great series of videos
Itchy Boots just got an 87 Tenere as her new ride - must be a conspiracy ;-)
Great minds!
Weird eh
Noraly ❤
She got an XT600e Iirc , much more user friendly and lighter .
Sorry the bike looks huge on the camera at least , how is little itchy boots going to ride this if she can’t touch the ground coming to a stop?😊
Looks awesome, you'd never guess that wasn't a factory paint scheme.❤
Nice one. Loving these reviews of old bikes. Cheers
Paul
when Paul sent me a vid of this when he brought it i loved it. old school porper enduro bike
That Tenere was my dream bike as a teenager
Love my xt1200z super tenere!!!!🇺🇸💪
Another great video Mr Neeves 😎🍻
MN, this series of videos are just amazing. Keep rocking it
Sounds glorious, especially on the flyby shot.
Lovely videos these! Thank you for this vintage content!
I did know these were the TDM engine slightly detuned.
I had a TDM it was a very good bike.
Anyway I went to Corfu and saw one of these it looked great I took loads of pictures and thought yes maybe on day.
Good bike to cover im liking these older bike reviews 👍
Makes me think about Danny Clark, RIP mate you always loved the Tenere!
I call two of them my own.
Both made in 89’
One is Chesterfield another one is Faraway Blue.
Love my babies so much!!!!
It's just the greatest looking machine. Same reason I have a Mk1 TT. Love it.
Great looking classic bike … I remember looking at these in a mag… thinking I want one … great vid thanks 👊
2 weeks ago 3 1/2 hours back roads ride with ‘92 TDM850. At 48 US mpg it’s beautiful. Like a new modern bike.
Really nice bike. The Super Tenere looks awesome. I bought one and passed my test on it in 2000.
Great vid! What glorious classic!
Great stuff, enjoying this series. Looking forward to whichever one you have a look at next. :)

Relatively lightweight, but Noraly still won't be able to pick it up, fully loaded .
Another blast from the past, thanks Neevesy. The bike sounds great with that Arrow pipe! I opted for the DR 800 back in the day, but, the SuperTen was the one I should have got!
Great video. What a monster. I love my big single Tenere 660 for all those reasons.👍
👌🏻It was my first bike 20 years ago and I loved it ❤️ I would like to get another one 🙌🏻
A great bike on roads local to me, nice job guys!
Didn't see this coming! What a classic I love it :) I have a DRZ400 E with FCR carb and fast-cams, K-Tech suspension etc. This has given me the buzz for finishing it off with the exhaust it deserves!
Good luck 😊👍

Everybody raves about the afica twin.but for me this was the one to go for back in the day.
One of my all time favourites. 🎉
Awesome video! That's got to be hoot to ride! Beautiful bike for sure. Best!
Beautiful looking bike and what a sound track. Can i have a spin Paul ? 😅
Keep up the good work Neevsey, lovely to see these older bike. 👍👍👍
Haha the unfortunate camera roll in the end!
Great video and bike 🔥

Bloody gorgeous. Would look perfect next my T7
Gorgeous bike
I had a 1990 one and loved it. Very comfortable to ride, but very heavy to push around. Great bike though.
What made the bike great, is that it gave adventure riders exactly what they wanted. Mid weight simplicity that could be repaired on the side of the road with an underseat tool kit and no electronics or sensors
Great looking bike!
Suggestions for future episodes, vfr750 94-97, vfr800 5th gen, Yamaha trx850. Cheers
Very nice bike indeed 👌👍

DT125R on steroids , absolute thug of a bike in its day .
Love it .
I had a 1990 RZ350 in the same blue. Always wanted it to be the KR yellow/blk or red/blk. 😄
That is one big bike. Trans Africa on it. Looks great.
Scratchy Shoes just got the 600 version. Great bikes...
Generally this kind of bike wouldn't be my cup of tea, but this one is really really cool.
Mine is from 1993. It's the best bike I own. Totally analogue.
Just imagine how things might have been if Ewan and Charlie rode one of these around the world at the time.
I have a 1989 model and they are fun to ride. Get the engine checked over and you're good to go.
Been riding bikes for over 40 years had cbx1000 r1 GXR1000 Harleys but just to get to work I ones had a DR600 I loved it. That Yamaha makes be want to say to my partner this really we be my last bike!!!

🗽🚬flipping Henry thats tasty

proper f'in bike - memories of youth 🙂
Those look like the same calipers they put on the early FZ750?
That Super Tenere deserves a better owner

I had that very bike, had put 20k on it until some toe rag nicked it.
Sorry to hear
The single cylinder XT will do everything this will do, but much lighter, and pretty good off road.
Everybody say they like the new 275° crank, I prefer that old 180° sounds mean!
"Speedo cables remember those!?" Get over yourselves lads! 😂
Thank you and bike owner for video about this Dakar legend!!! But friends, what is with your English?! I can catch only 20- 30 % of your speech 😂 Britain English is the most hard English 😂
Looks great for sure, struggling to see what actually makes it great to ride or own (ducks...). I could see me on a TRX850 tho'
Nice!!!💝👑✨
Oh no, what happened right at the end? Is the bike alright?
It's the camera
Is it just me... Or does that Chain seem over tight? Hard to tell from a picture, but with no weight on it, it looks very tight.
The question is Neevesy, now you've riden it, do you have the wanty wanties?
It would definitely be in my dream garage!
🏍️🏍️🏍️🔥🔥🔥
Cakes!
Camera left the chat in the end😂
👍
First! Yes!

Any one connecting dots after Norali custom build of Franki here

It’s super … 😁
Looks similar to what Itchy Boots has chosen for her next adventure. #dakarnostalgia
She’s on a 600.
If take out two tooth out of the front sprocket the laziness will go away and it will even get more top speed.
The reason I sold my Ténéré, great bike, but way too top-heavy (7:40)!
It definitely looks the business but I don't see how it does anything a DR650 or KLR650 can't do? Seems like a lot of bulk for no real benefit.
Front suspension "loose and sharp"???
The Arrow Pipe is "fruity",
"Looking over the hedges"
"changing the engine, simplest mod in the World"
🤣
Poor man's Africa Twin.
Have to agree.
