Nostalgia is a wonderful thing. Wether you remember distinctly or are living on the nostalgia of others, it's such a good feeling. The Super Ténéré for me, is a bike I can't help but love. The nostalgia is a little too powerful.
I think that across the four episodes of Retro vs Modern is seems that nostalgia isn't that accurate. Our fondness of previous memories skews our perceptions a little. Every time I ask someone what that remember a bike being, it's wildly interesting. From the original Africa Twin being like a 'production rally bike' to the Super Ténéré being way too heavy for off-road, none of those tropes are quite true.
On top of that, we've learnt a lot about modern bikes. Sometimes they're great, sometimes they've lost their way but with the Yamaha T7, it's seems like a lot of chips have fallen into place. More simply, the T7 is great. What a wonderful bike it's turned out to be. A truly modern, capable bike.
The Super Ténéré is without doubt a lovely bike, but this comparison has been the best possible showcase of how 30 years has developed bikes in adventure motorcycling. We live in a great time.

Honestly, the video could have just been a single frame with a title saying "YES".

  • @richardwhitehead4684

I’d much rather have the original one. But of course that will never happen because NO ONE EVER sells them.

  • @mrcreative6020

Yes, I have my XTz 19 years now. I will never sell it and I am sure it will outlast me. I also have other bikes like KTM 790s and 1050s and 1200 etc, which come and go, but no other bike I have owned has come close to my XTZ for joyful, riding experience, smooth, engine, and comfort

30 years old aand still love the circular lights. Amazing

The 750 can be made even better, saving many kg, cosmetics, better brakes etc. It a a do it all but not great at anytime specific. More for long trips over off road but capable of handling most situations.

Awesome video as usual! Thanks! Xtz750 and T700 are two of the best adventure bike of its eras. My first adventure bike over 20 years ago was a 1989 Xtz750, blue white yellow paint with black rims. It took me all over Europe and Africa. After growing up watching Paris-Dakar the choice was easy! The Super Tenere is a very comfortable but primitive bike with soft suspension. The engine is powerful but needs high revs to perform. At one point was it my only bike and I used it for everything from commuting to single track. I thought it was a great off road bike then, I guess I didn’t know better! It’s a heavy bike, especially with overloaded aluminum panniers. I spent a lot of time pinned under the bike on my African trip. Good memories…

back in the day, the xtz750 was the fastest adventure bike, pitted against the likes of the xrv750, r100gs, 900ac.

Maybe it is not best best bike ever, but it is so much reliable!!! That’s fantastic! Your video makes my heart warm and i remember so many unforgettable moments in the Italian or French alps…Sweden…Netherlands…Switzerland….Poland…I love the XTZ 750 and I will give it never away!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

As a T7 owner and a fairly new rider these vids are a great window into the timeline of motorbikes, a history that directly feeds into what we ride today. It really helps put the current bike line up into perspective.

Great video! My very first bike (bought less than a year ago) is one of the few here in Canada - a 1989 Super Tenere! I absolutely adore the old thing. It has a strong European vibe and reminds me of my old Land Rovers I used to have. I admit in my day to day I ride my VFR a bit more, but I will always love the Tenere!

Great video! I own a XTZ-750 and it surprises me every time I ride it how capable it is. The engine is smooth and it really comes alive in the high revs. I have bar risers on my bike and it makes standing more comfortable. The only issue I have standing up on my bike is the HUGE gas tank.

Love this series! The Super Ten was defintely a looker, but maybe the real performer of this time was Honda's XRV650 Africa Twin (later 750s might also apply)?

Since the beginning of the Retro vs Modern series we were looking forward to this episode. We loved to watch it! Hopefully you got the Super Ténéré running again in the meantime. 💪
