KTM should have just stuck to their bread and butter - 690cc and down dirt bikes and dual sports. Though these smaller displacement bikes always flew out the door, they put our KTM dealership completely out of business a few years back by insisting that he stock all sorts of brutally expensive, extra-large displacement adventure and road bikes that he couldn't sell nor afford to keep. As a matter of fact, I can count the number of 800cc and larger KTM's I have ever seen in my area on two hands, and most of those were just passing through.
890's sell like crazy where I live. Dealer couldn't get enough of them. Even the 890 Rally, they had people begging for them, and one owner sold his almost new one for $15,000 more than retail.

Just never forget that the old original ADV Riders 50-70 yr old dudes over at ADV Rider forums hate you, hate that you think that your baby adventure bike can go anywhere that their highly modified DR650 can and will gatekeep the shit out of you.
I'm very much so in the "back-to-basic" clan. Motorcycle should be simple and serviceable by the owner without advanced specialised tools. There is too much electronics in modern machine and I don't care for it. I don't want my bike to be a computer on wheels.
Great "state of the moto" update. I would say you overlook with KTM what you mentioned earlier on, that they started the whole baby ADV trend with the (awesome, fun, well-priced) 390A. They are trying new things. I think reliability must have been a key issue in their financial outlook, people don't want to stare at unpredictable maintenance costs investing in a new bike right now
I'm kinda looking forward to baby adventure bikes to be honest :D Assuming their size is somewhat represented in their MSRP's it woud be ideal for shorter riders (I'm only 5'7) that live in places where adventure opportunities are limited (the Netherlands simply doesn't have a lot of nature that is available to ride through) and require quite the long drive to get somewhere remotely challenging. Until now I was considering a Scram 411 (even though it'll take another 5-6 months before I'll be able to start lessons for my license 😂) so having more choice is only a good thing imo.
Speaking of the dual sport and baby adventure boom (as well as the unfortunate ktm situation): I would love an update to the ktm690/husqvarna701/gasgas700 enduro. For example LED lights and maybe a display that isn't an LCD watch from 1992 would be nice. Kind of wild that they charge over 12k for the current version, and yes I know "unicorn" and all...
KTM gave us some great bikes and hopefully will give us more great bikes. Most of keyboard warriors screaming about cams do not even own KTM. In reality, some 0.5% of them had issues, which KTM will cover by goodwill. I owned plenty of bikes, KTM included and they are not less reliable then any other brand. Pitty that is just popular to shit over brand that brought so much good to motorcycle world. Different bikes, unique bikes. I strongly think that we as bikers, have better options with KTM then without KTM.
I’ve owned 4 KTM’s over the years and they all had issues. Some minor, some serious safety issues and one, a MAJOR catastrophic engine failure. But here’s the thing, every one of them had problems. In between owning the KTMs, I owned numerous Honda CR 2 strokes and every one of those were flawless. No unusual failures, no DNFs, no catastrophic motor failures, no brake failures, nothing. KTM is getting exactly what it deserves, due to decades of producing poor quality bikes.
I have 4 KTMs now and they are all great. Super fun and so far super reliable. Bummer that there are folks that have had bad experiences with them; I would feel the same way if I had the same experiences. I hope they get it together because I think they make some of the best trail and adv bikes in existence.
@ I think that the loudest bashing is coming from non KTM owners. It’s like they are so happy to have something bad to write about KTM since some reviewers said that KTM is more fun then the bike they own. I currently also own 2 KTMs, one of them is 790 Duke, both with no issues at all. In this time for KTM, I think that is good also to hear voices of people that own and are happy with KTM. And that is a lots of people.
Rubbish. KTMs are a lot more unreliable as anything that comes out of Japan. Same with any European or American marque. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if they were reliable.....but they're not.
@@Jungleland33 sorry if I am wrong, but this looks just as an opinion of someone who never owned a KTM. And you are perfectly entitled to have one and to purchase only bikes that are from Japan. But if you do not own a KTM you can’t just go arround and call them unreliable. Makes no sense.
8:25 Isn’t the svartpilen 401 motor made by KTM, which you heavily advocated for as one of the best beginner motorcycles? And u put the Duke 390 up pretty high on your tier list.
I bought a brand new 2021 Duke 390. I had problems with the fuel filter, computer, and corrosion. The bike is a great little bike. Strong peppy engine.
GSX-R750 - There is a reason all the dealers around me sell out of em early every year. Great platform, good power with that "great analog feel". Now they might change to fly-by-wire to race in Supersport out of the box. Too much bloat on new bikes. Feels like the truck market and adding all this stuff to justify higher prices.
There are many reasons why KTM’s are not selling. One of them is that potential customers are starting to realise that they are being asked to pay European Prices for Indian and Chinese products.
Good vid so i subscribed.I am 62 and own a Beta 300rr and a Africa Twin. The AT will be sold this spring and going to a DS bike.I hope KTM makes it as i have owned 4 of there 2 strokes and all were good bikes.I switched to Beta because of there totally awesome warranty.
The baby adventure bike segment is much larger than a few bikes. Honda cb500x, kawasaki versys x300, royal enfield himalayan 411 and now the 450, and the bmw g310gs can all be added to the list. I will say that only a few of those bikes can measure up to the 390 adventure. The Versys x 300 is just as light but doesn't have very good torque. The honda has been great ever since they fitted a 19inch front although a bit on the heavy side. I will say for myself lightness is way better than power, especially for off road work. You can break traction with 20hp so a 500lb adventure bike with 100hp isn't any better than a 385 lbs bike with 40hp. Or maybe I am just an old man who doesn't want to lift a heavy bike if I have a mishap on the trail.
To be fair I think all motorcycle makers are gonna be having trouble moving forward unless they start making smaller and cheaper bikes. You really can't use the power of anything bigger than a 600cc on roads.
I know it's an Asia Pacific model, but there's the Suzuki V-strom 250SX as well not really a new model for 2025, but they've dropped the orange and replaced it with red... Yellow and black still in production from the model release in 2023. it is kind of slow on the open road, and the ABS can't be turned off. the MRF tyre fitted from factory are the worst tyres ever produced and are quite literally DANGEROUS and need replacing with something else before the bike leaves the dealership (even the Shinko 705 makes these things feel terrible) But it's still a reasonably good bike if you can overlook what's missing
3:05 - 3:57 Can someone explain this to me? Because all I heard, was what has been going on since the 1990's....... Where companies for thirty years have been building powerful bikes that have, "...a lot of track performance, but a little bit of on-road capabilities as well." Thank you.
The problem with ALL 300 to 500cc bikes of ALL manufactures, adhere to the stupid A2 license that makes them heavy and underweight. Caps = we forget that somehow 10% of buyers define the whole category.
last summer I did test drive this "adventure bike"... Now, I have driven Gold Wing couple of times.. which is meant for the road. And is excellent, if you do not want to drive a car. But yeah... the said "adventure bike" really did not make me feel like testing it fast on gravel and with the "adventure" tires, not so much fun on the road either. And.. if you driving an adventure bike, why do you need so much luggage? Because if you can afford a ~30k € bike, drive light.
Dear Yam, while I do agree with most of what you said, I think the electric motorcycles future is just beginning. When the first cars came out, no one thought they would replace the horse or the steam driven trains. Electric motorcycles are in their "Model T' Ford stage of development, and are just waiting for that new technology that will make them cheaper and more efficient. Remember, when cars first came out, they were considered "Rich Men's Toys" . Now everyone has one.
The bike I want doesn't exist. But I can build it pretty easy. I didn't do ANY research before I bought my first bike. Big mistake. Got an 03 Katana 750. Way too heavy. Too much power. I did a TON of research before I bought my second bike- and loved it. Rode my klx250 sf everyday for 5 years straight. Always planned on going back to a sport, but had back surgery and knee surgery between when I sold the klx and now. So... I'm in the market for a sport(y)bike. Not necessarily a "sport-bike." My biggest complaint about the klx was highway driving SUCKED. It could do it... I used it commute and hour to- and an hour home from work everyday for 5 years. But the wind was annoying AF, and I got blown around way too much. So I want a fully faired bike with a windscreen. And with my back and knee problems, a more relaxed upright riding position. All this to say, I want an MT-07, BUT I want it fully faired with a windscreen. Which is an R7. BUT with risers, a handlebar, and a less aggressive foot peg position. Either bike can be used as the base for this project, but I feel like swapping out the clip-ons and footpegs on the r7 would be easier than trying to attach all the fairings and headlights from an r7 on an MT. Now I know I'm gonna piss a lot of people off putting straight bars, risers, and mt foot pegs on my R7, because those are all "dad bike" qualities that I'm putting on a "sport bike." But I'd argue the r7 is really an everyday street bike (an MT-07) COSPLAYING as a sport bike to begin with. So really, I'm just taking the mask off a bit, and letting it be who it really is- an MT-07 with plastics and a visor. Tell me why I'm crazy, or that I should just get a ninja650 and call it a day. 👇
I love the color scheme on the KTMs but I would never own one as I've heard nothing but bad stories about their reliability... I own three Suzukis and a Honda... I'm big into reliability 😂
It saddens me that my r1 and the r9 are tossed in the same category. I loved the r6 and haven't seen what the r9 is capable of, but it feels strange to claim it's a supersport. I'm cool with it if you drop the "super."
KTM has great chassis and design. The only thing that stands between me ever buying a KTM is their colors. I just don't want such bright orange. I means I haven't seen any other manufacturer that makes motorcycles with such high power to weight ratios.
And even still, some KTM owners will spend DAYYYYYYYYYS arguing over social media about the fact the camshaft issue is minimal or non existent, and KTM is a great brand, no trouble happening.
Dual sport and adventure is a way back for us old people. Love my sport bikes but it is like a suicide mission now days. Even riding within the legal limits everyone calls the cops and complains. Neighbors moved here to little town in the middle of nowhere from California so now I can’t even start it in the garage without cops doing a wellness visit. So I bought a kx 450f to make some real noise with. I have really enjoyed going back to the dirt. Easy to pickup when I drop it. Gives me a great workout and the adrenaline is awesome. Feel like a kid agin and no cops on the farm!! Back in the day I would just ride it from town to the track or the farm but those days are over. Thanks to all the Karen’s.

@@jayd3931 Then it absolutely makes zero sense that KTM would put my dealer out of business over it when they could sell all the stinking things they could make somewhere else.
Just never forget that the old original ADV Riders 50-70 yr old dudes over at ADV Rider forums hate you, hate that you think that your baby adventure bike can go anywhere that their highly modified DR650 can and will gatekeep the shit out of you.
Nonsense, as the owner of a real adventure bike, I'm thrilled that they're now making adventure bikes for ladies and will welcome them to the trails.
I really don’t like the fact that you didn’t mention the himi 411, though not the best she was the actual reason this segment of baby adv exploded

You really hit the reality nail on the head with your description of KTM and it's followers 😊
I think reliability must have been a key issue in their financial outlook, people don't want to stare at unpredictable maintenance costs investing in a new bike right now
You got your point across but the DRC is more known for artisanal mining of cobalt, not lithium. I can't really weigh in on motorcycles though.
9:00 V3 with an electrically driven turbo...
I literally just spit on my desk in shock.
the turbo is just for low RPMs to, increase power. A 750, as narrow as a twin? I love it
I'm kinda looking forward to baby adventure bikes to be honest :D Assuming their size is somewhat represented in their MSRP's it woud be ideal for shorter riders (I'm only 5'7) that live in places where adventure opportunities are limited (the Netherlands simply doesn't have a lot of nature that is available to ride through) and require quite the long drive to get somewhere remotely challenging. Until now I was considering a Scram 411 (even though it'll take another 5-6 months before I'll be able to start lessons for my license 😂) so having more choice is only a good thing imo.
Love the vids man
Speaking of the dual sport and baby adventure boom (as well as the unfortunate ktm situation): I would love an update to the ktm690/husqvarna701/gasgas700 enduro.
Amen, back to basics ! 100%. I don’t much care about the extras other than abs maybe.
Don't forget to add the NX500 in you baby ADV list.
Simplicity is beauty. Kawasaki W800, Royal Enfield Int650, Moto Guzzi V7. How about a small belt drive supercharger instead of the turbo?
As a BMW GS 1200 owner, I’m pretty excited about the new F450 GS. Looks awesome. A smaller and lighter GS? I’m all in!
I’m really excited about the Kawasaki 500 adv bike coming. Seems like a great size for someone like myself.
Battery chemistry is not ready for bikes yet, give it another 5-8y, boils down to power density per Kg to $$. Torque is insane though.
8:25 Isn’t the svartpilen 401 motor made by KTM, which you heavily advocated for as one of the best beginner motorcycles? And u put the Duke 390 up pretty high on your tier list.
thanks Captain hindsight... your perspective is invaluable 🧐
I bought a brand new 2021 Duke 390. I had problems with the fuel filter, computer, and corrosion.
The bike is a great little bike. Strong peppy engine.
I hope that the supercharged V3 gets released to production!
My nearest dealer already has 2 2025 gsxr 750's. $13k plus fees.
That’s the next bike I’m thinking about getting, that or a zx6, or r9
So should I not start on a KTM 390 Duke anymore?
To be fair I think all motorcycle makers are gonna be having trouble moving forward unless they start making smaller and cheaper bikes. You really can't use the power of anything bigger than a 600cc on roads.
I know it's an Asia Pacific model, but there's the Suzuki V-strom 250SX as well not really a new model for 2025, but they've dropped the orange and replaced it with red... Yellow and black still in production from the model release in 2023. it is kind of slow on the open road, and the ABS can't be turned off. the MRF tyre fitted from factory are the worst tyres ever produced and are quite literally DANGEROUS and need replacing with something else before the bike leaves the dealership (even the Shinko 705 makes these things feel terrible)
But it's still a reasonably good bike if you can overlook what's missing
Entire motorcycle market is dying, I donno how RE is doing soo great!
Simple cheap bikes!
3:05 - 3:57
Can someone explain this to me? Because all I heard, was what has been going on since the 1990's....... Where companies for thirty years have been building powerful bikes that have, "...a lot of track performance, but a little bit of on-road capabilities as well." Thank you.
The problem with ALL 300 to 500cc bikes of ALL manufactures, adhere to the stupid A2 license that makes them heavy and underweight. Caps = we forget that somehow 10% of buyers define the whole category.
ps. all non race oriented, with logical.service intervals.
What’s your take on KTM 990 RC R? And when will you do a track ride review on that?
You guys complain about KTMs being expensive. Wait until the Ducati MSRP is released.
I love the Triumph Tiger Rally pro but it has so much tech on it that I'm a bit put off.
Loving my 450 Himalayan right now.
Id rather walk then ride that garbage
@@michaelch6536 LOL, mmmmmmk
Ywah you should really walk, it is good for mental health I heard. Hope you'll be better soon
I made the final payment on my 2022 RSV4 today. I won't get another bike a long long while lol.
5:44 uhh sub 10,000 lbs, yammie are you br’ish now
He's referencing the European pricing for the Hornet 1000.
So do I need to hurry and buy a 125 Sting, a 640 Duke, and a 1290 Superduke before the prices explode?
I hold the biggest hope for Baby Aprilia Tuareg being made same way as the father.
last summer I did test drive this "adventure bike"...
Other notable mentions for:
Point #1= Suzuki V-Strom 250SX
Point #2= Suzuki GSX-8R
9:03 you just broke my heart. I’d buy it if it used a real turbo or supercharger
My KTM is going to be worth dirt if they go bankrupt, getting stock parts will be a nightmare
I still want a 1290 Superduke R Evo... Doesn't help KTM though - I was never going to buy a new one!
It saddens me that my r1 and the r9 are tossed in the same category. I loved the r6 and haven't seen what the r9 is capable of, but it feels strange to claim it's a supersport. I'm cool with it if you drop the "super."
As an engineer of a JOEM, all I could say about the ride-by-wire from every makers is because of EU regulation of OBD 2.
You've failed to recognize the Kove 450 which is the new king of adventure bikes, after winning the Baja 1000 this year in the adventure class.
Riders win races, not bikes.
Yammie Vanna White still turns letters for almost 50 years.
I am spoiled with the new tech. Every bike should have cruise control.
cruise control is new technology?
I watched a video with comments full of hate about you yammy. Didn’t realize that many people disliked you
opinions are like.......... everybody has one
I just want all the power and all the speed
2:12 bring back the 2 strokes.
Thy are the ones who did not get a poor quality cam.
I agree with most of your thoughts. KTM is reportedly 1.5 Billion Euro in debt. Bajaj owns 48% share in the company.
Wha happened to the grill, on the headlamp on ur Desert X?
Can’t wait for that V3 Honda engine !
Awesome vid
Forgot the Himalayan 450 and the new scram 440
I would love to see the CB750 Hornet in the US. What is the hold up?
I’m 6’ bout 250 pounds and grew up riding four wheelers and dirt bikes. What bike would you recommend considering i think a 400 would be too small
Does the Triumph scrambler 400x count as a baby adventure bike?
Smaller, fewer cylinders, forced induction is exactly what car manufacturers did before giving in to EV pressure from governments. This is a rearguard action, stalling for time, hoping that recent US politics can kill regulations here, Canada, Japan, and maybe even Europe.
Let's talk about the elephant in the room Boom 223cc naked bikes....packed with features.
Will Honda ever make the 450l in a rally form? I would think that would be a huge seller.
Doubt, doesnt have enough oil capacity or long enough oil change intervals for high mileage. They should put the cb500x engine in the chassis and add a windshield 😅
@@Threedogsinatrenchcoatdude been saying this for so long was glad to read this comment. They have had that motor! Would be perfect for that long distance low service interval bike we’ve been waiting for from Honda. I really don’t get it
What does this KTM situation mean for the Husqy street bikes? Eek!
Feel like KTM is gonna make it through but I think they're gonna Hella slim down the line up
Let's leave the great WR250R in the past and talk some other things into existence like a T3 or a new R4, T4, MT04!!
XT 500 XT 600
with dual starting
For sure the mini Tenere would be sick. Honda maybe will want to answer to that and the new Kawasaki bike by using their 500 twin that they ALREADY HAVE THE MOTOR FOR and make a smaller displacement Africa Twin with that motor
Mosta Adventure bike owners dont go off road - its an expensive style thing
A new 20.000rpm 250cc 4 cilinder screamer with 50 horsies would be a blast...
But unrealistic for this century.
Kawasaki has a 4 cyl 400 that makes 58 HP.... would love to ride, hear and see that !
How did you leave out the new 390 Adventure R just debuted at EICMA in early November?
That being said they might have been a day late and a dollar short on that bike if the company seriously goes under. What a shame
