- New Super Mario Bros. is a game I don't see many people talking about nowadays despite how much it changed and shaped the 2D Mario formula we know today. In this video I try to explain my thoughts on this and how I think New Super Mario Bros. changed 2D Mario. You could also call this video a New Super Mario Bros retrospective

This game holds a special place in my heart. Not only was it my first Mario game, but it was the game that got me into the series as a whole. I don't think I'd even be into games if it weren't for NSMB.

Oh I'm on the same road as you I remember so many grand gems in my memories such as world 8 as it was the first time I had encountered and beat a final boss in a game in general and it was magical and also I got hooked on how the final castles background looked it was so cool but at some point I lost the game somewhere due to that it was physical but at some point I bought the game again I had the ultimate urge to 100% it it was a nostalgic field trip and my got the castle music had no right to slap so hard.
dude your videos are so insanely underrated and high quality, and i typically dont enjoy content from small creators. you are a LEGEND!!! i genuinely dont know how you can make these high quality videos and still want to make more with such low views, definitely going to be recommending you to people.

I love how the first and last (3…) installments of NSMB have Bowser + Bowser Jr boss fights
I really loved this game. For me everything is perfect... The musics, worlds, boss, secrets, ennemies, how every levels are different from each other, etc... It will always be a classic in my heart and I totally understand why it changed 2D Mario!
I found this to also be one of the more challenging 2D Mario games too which is a nice change of pace. I think that all of the "New" Super Mario games are all solid games in their own right, but they all tend to be very easy outside of one or two moments. This game felt like a solid challenge from beginning to end, particularly if you tried to collect every star coin.
There's a Roulette Block near the checkpoint in W5 Castle the can give you a mini mushroom.
This game is now 17 years now, and is arguably now just as much of a classic as games like SMB3 and Super Mario World are. Without this game, we would have likely never gotten games like Sonic Mania, Mega Man 9, 10 and 11, Shovel Knight and Mighty Gunvolt, among others. Just like how SMB1 revolutionized 2D platformers and Super Mario 64 revolutionized 3D platformers, this revolutionized the revival of 2D platformers.

This is honestly my favorite 2D Mario game, it feels like a mix of SMB3's varied and fun level design and SMW's more open level design with a lot of secrets to find.
Don't forget that Super Mario Land 2 released on Game Boy in 1992, thus shortening the time gap between mainline 2D Mario games from 16 years to 14 years.
It's actually Super Mario Land 2 for the Gameboy in 1992 the last 2d Mario before this game.

New Super Mario Bros is a game DEFINED by its clever contributions and fantastically fun additions. Just like Super Mario Bros 3, New Super Mario Bros has everything you're looking for in a 2D Mario game... however, it rarely excels in these categories. I cannot claim that this game is a phenomenal experience, because in truth, it's not. You cannot retrospectively review this game without looking to its sequel and how many things that game managed to improve over this one. In terms of flat-out quality, level design, visuals, etc., it's still a fantastic experience. There's no denying that. And again, in terms of its innovations to the Mario formula, it puts later titles to shame. But, there's also many aspects of this game that have not aged the best. New Super Mario Bros is an amazing game, but it's not phenomenal. If you're looking for an absolute top-tier 2D Mario, we're going to need to look a little further. We must pay our respects to this one first, though.

Man I love this game!! I remember a girl in my class playing this on her pink DS and every time she let me borrow it I was ecstatic because I did not have one of my own or games like that at my house considering my parents only bought just dance. When I finally picked up this game, I was so glad I did! And after watching this, I think I’m gonna be play it again!!
Update: I played it again & breasted all the star coins and all for the 3rd time in my life. Love this game and how portable my DS is!

New Super Mario Bros. didn’t just change 2D Mario, but it changed the whole Mario franchise. Even 3D and RPG (Paper) Mario. 3D games became more linear and focused on level design and textures, RPG games became more adventure focused instead of role playing, Mario sports games and Mario Kart started introducing items from 2D games and it made developers want to return to 2D games and bring back old 2D franchises. There is just so much this game had to offer.
NSMB (2006) also began a trend of NSMB games setting the standard for the visuals used in future Mario entries (though it was mostly NSMBWii (2009) that did the heavy lifting later on). I was surprised to see just how much stuff in Mario Kart Wii (2008) uses NSMB design elements.
This game is my most favorite mario game of all time.

How does this game change the formula in terms of exploration? Super Mario World levels had TONS of exploratory value.
no yeah I agree that smw levels a lot of exploratory value but I think that new super mario bros. emphasized the importance of exploration a lot more and actually incentivized players to explore more with the introduction of star coins. sure super mario world had the dragon coins but star coins were used to be able to unlock toad houses and other stuff to make the player want to collect them while in mario world the dragon coins only gave the player an extra life if they collected all of them in a level

This was the first ever game that I actually owned for myself, and the one that really lead me into gaming. While I enjoyed the other entries into the NSMB series, this one was definitely my absolute favourite!
Can you only play this version on DS?
You can also play it on the 3DS due to its backwards compatibility. It also used to be available on the WiiU eShop.

A complant I have with the video is it's less of a review of the games sbd or a review of the bosses, maybe space out what your talking about a bit more because it just felt like you were favouring the bosses, which isn't the only thing this Game has

I just wish Mario controlled better in this game, he's way too heavy, like in no other 2D Mario, which makes the game really hard
