There is something so great and even mystical about the very early eighties...it was innocent yet wild...1980 81 and 82 were really like how people thought about the 1950's. The pop music and Club-Discos were fantastic. This show brings back that feeling. Exciting to be young with no internet...no cell phones..and your friends ALL showed up at the clubs...even after 84 things started to change in the world.
Thank you for putting words to my experience of the early 80s. Even as a very young child, I sensed that mystical quality. For me, the movie Xanadu and the Rainbow Connection song both really captured that Era.
I know I grew up during the two eras, and before and after were strikingly different. I think big social changes happened around 79-80. Disco ended, country music and British electro-pop came in. There was a strong pro-conservative backlash in the US and UK. The 1980s, especially after about 83-84 seemed to be a long hangover after the 70s party. There were other things contributing to a more sobre age - the AIDs scare. But I prefered the pre-cell phone and pre-internet age. Ah well, at least we can watch the old videos on the internet!
I came across this by accident. I forgot all about Solid Gold. It was one of the best shows on television. My entire family watched it every week. All I wanted to be was a Solid Gold dancer.
In KY, Solid Gold aired in the Lexington area on WKYT and later WTVQ and in the Louisville area on WDRB every Saturday Night at 🕕, and for all 8 years, Solid Gold served as a lead-in to Hee Haw on rival Louisville station WHAS.
I got here from the "Comment" thread on politcal video (seriously). I forgot all about Solid Gold. Let me check this out and bask in some GOOD memories for a change. I remember like yesterday when Irene Cara sang FAME....and of course I saw the movie. Loved it!!!
Everyone watched this. Even if you didn't care for the genre you watched. We didn't have much options tv wise so everyone tuned in. I can remember being at my grandparents & rushing to finish dinner, clean up etc & then begging my grandfather to let us watch & turn off what he was watching.
Solid Gold and Dance Fever were both shows we never missed and looked forward to. Well, Dance Fever faded out of popularity in our home after a couple seasons. Solid Gold was a favorite for several years. Once MTV came along though, us kids didn't watch Solid Gold that often.
In fact, both Solid Gold and Dance Fever dominated KY television on Saturday Nights in the 80s, and also faced competition from Hee Haw and Star Search.
On this day in 1980 {Sept. 13th} the syndicated TV music series 'Solid Gold' debut nationwide. It ran until July 23rd, 1988, with a total of 332 episodes. The 1st show's host was Dionne Warwick, at that time her record "No Night So Long" was on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, it peaked at #23 & spent 16 on the Top 100. Guests were Irene Cara, Larry Graham, Chuck Berry, Johnny Lee, Linda Ronstadt, & Mickey Gilley. Ms. Warwick will celebrate her 73rd birthday in three months on December 12th.
This Show was Lit Before the term even existed. The greatest would perform on this joint right here. I miss this type of TV. Man also you had The Midnight Special back in the Days on Friday Nights
I think I was 10 when I first saw this show. LOVe LOVE LOVEd the show. They were the best dancers in the 80s. To this day the colour gold brings lots of great memories. Bring back 1980!!
Ooh!! Those dancers.!! What a wonderful show it was!! Loved those dancers and the performers you could see the hits performers by the artits and dance yo the music.woww!!
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this show! I couldn't wait for it to come on. I just love all the dancers, costumes, and of course all the great artist! I miss this show sooo much.
Irene Cara singing this song came on my feeds. Watched it. Reminds me of the Solid Gold show I used to watch in the 80'si Clicked on this video. First Episode of Solid Gold. It's Irene Cara. Wow!
So much memories. Brother and me would watch Saturday night since we were to young for going out. Favorite clip Eddy Money singing Take Me Home Tonight with Ronni Spector
Got that right. I was privileged to be at an age where I could fully enjoy and appreciate every minute of the creativity and energy that made it what it was.
they can bring back the reruns.. I'm not interested in seeing it rebooted bc today's music is hot ass garbage.. the dancers would be half naked and twerking into the camera with no real choreography.. we have no talent or class anymore..
Gwen Kosak Me too! I always wanted to be Darcel! This was my favorite show as a kid. I feel so thankful I grew up during the 80s. We may not have had the technology that our kids have today, but it was still so much fun! The simple things...like playing Spotlight on a summer night, playing kickball in the street, riding our 10 speed bikes, collecting and trading Garbage Pail Kids and Lisa Frank stickers, playing video games at the arcade, playing video games on our Atari game systems (Asteroids, Space Invaders or Pac-Man, anyone?) and catching lightning bugs in a jar. Simple things for simple times. I feel like Brooks on The Shawshank Redemption: the world went and got itself in a big damn hurry!
I remember watching this episode when I was 11 years old. It's still in my mind because I remember watching Irene Cara and thinking how beautiful I thought she was. There was something magnetic about here. I loved her voice, style, smile, everything.
Yes thank you for uploading this show! I used to dance around the lounge room whilst watching this show as a child. I still love disco music of coarse.
Love the mixed countdown brilliant set the tone for the greatest decade of all time and like those vinyl ive had and seen has Solid Gold on miss these legend times my childhood and the 80s never ever to forget
i remember getting excited to watch this show? my whole family would sit around to watch:) then i would go buy the record of one of the singers i liked? lol:) such a shame we can't do this ever again
Man this is so my childhood putting a sweater on my head and pretending that I have really long hair like The Darcel dancer(the one w/the long braids) LOL good times I'm telling you really good times nothing's like the 80s!
I never thought I'd see this anywhere but my memories. I used to watch this show with my mom's friend's daughters and we'd point at each dancer and say "I wish she was my mom." I know that's pretty stupid and petty, but I believe I was about 7 when I said that stupidity.
Me too. I was 13 that time and I would joined my older brothers watching it on Mon nights right after finishing my homework. The programme would then be the talk in school the next day esp with the girls discussing about those who performed the previous night. Sweet memories... Greetings from Singapore.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant...and the show kept entertaining us every week. Wish we could have the whole series repeated for us on Netflix!! Are you guys and gals considering something like that?? It would be an instant hit series with everyone over fifty 🥰🥰
I love this so much! I used to wait to watch this with my Mom back in the day. I can see her dancing in the living room with her cork platform shoes. lol Goodtimes!
I'd just started puberty, those female dancers were the highlight of my week! loved Solid Gold, but MTV debuted a year later, most teens migrated there and never returned to solid gold, even though the show lasted for 8 years.
Un programa maravilloso, cuantos recuerdos me trae. Gracias por subirlo. Thank you to upload the most wonderful show that I saw in English. Thank you so much to bring to my mind so much memories.
This show could of last forever as music never dies and there are always new artist , and count downs to the number 1 song of the week . I'm not sure why they took it off the air .
My favourite episode has to be when soldier boy became a guest to bad he died 😢

LaToya Farrell, you're welcome!
lbCharmed1 I found this by chance and can’t stop watching! Thanks for such wonderful memories, I know what I’ll be doing for the next hour 😀
Most definitely!
This was not the 80s Solid Gold started in the late 70s.
This music is considered disco music. By the time the 80s hit it was all about New Wave music.
Wow! Memories! Back when we weren't over-saturated with tv so things were still unique and enjoyable. A show like this wouldn't survive on tv today.
I came across this by accident. I forgot all about Solid Gold. It was one of the best shows on television. My entire family watched it every week. All I wanted to be was a Solid Gold dancer.
M M - glad you found us! Welcome and enjoy some memories from the past!

That's awesome!
Omg really I didnt no what that was lol
Really?? What was it like?
@Amy Davis Wow... lucky YOU. I would have loved to have been there.

tonlo72 Absolutely! I was 6 or 7 and totally transfixed!
tonlo72 I watched that Music show in 1981. I was living in Dominican Republic then.
Totally true. I didn't even like most of the acts that were on this show, but the whole fam hunkered down to watch every Saturday at 6pm
I seen a few shows but I was too busy going to school going to heavy leather gay bars to watch it continuously
I watched a few episodes of solid gold when I was a kid. The 80s was a great decade for good music.
Damn, I really loved this show especially when they guested Soldier Boy, my childhood hero. Those were good times.
Wow! What a classic! This & "Puttin On The Hits" were my favorites back then!!!!
don't forget the ultimate Soul Train!
Even though it would never be the same as the eighties they need to do a solid Gold#2 sure miss my teenage years wow
Those dancers were fly, they had it going on!
I used to watch this tv show and I loved very much seeing all my favorite singers and groups. Give me so many remembers from my childhood.
Omg!! how awesome, I miss this show. Damn T.V was fantastic before reality shows.
It really was.
I loved Solid Gold as a kid. Good stuff!

A great trip down memory lane. It was a great show!
Miss dance/variety shows like Solid Gold...what an era! #70sand80sforever
You have to give the Solid Gold dancers credit for trying to dance to some of these songs that you really can't dance to.
OMG! I remember this! They showed Solid Gold 79 as a special a few times before they premiered the Series with this episode.
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this show! I couldn't wait for it to come on. I just love all the dancers, costumes, and of course all the great artist! I miss this show sooo much.
This was a great show.loved to watch it on Saturday night as a kid.

Sherry not buy that cover picture you have

David Lee YESSSSS...SIIRRR!!!!!......so unforgettable....
Actually, it really wasn't.
No, seriously
Trust me.
I guess it depends on your age and cultural affiliations at the time.
David Lee amen!
YOu are clueless. The greatest decade ever, and I partied in many of them.
Somebody really needs to bring this show back.
Problem is, today's pop music is complete rubbish. Pop back then wasn't that bad.
they can bring back the reruns.. I'm not interested in seeing it rebooted bc today's music is hot ass garbage.. the dancers would be half naked and twerking into the camera with no real choreography.. we have no talent or class anymore..
LD SW
Damm right!,
We did and it was called Glee, and it sucked
@@Jeff-xy7fv Um..
back when this first came on my dream was to become a solid gold dancer, didnt happen but used to love watching the show!!!!!!!!
