  • I woke up early unsure where to go. Ultra light perch fishing was an idea but I fancied something different. So I jumped in the car and headed off to a place full of childhood fishing memories. No idea what to expect, would the fish still be there? I was met with a truly stunning morning and the memories flooded back. This is what fishing is all about for me.

    Brilliant, you have a talent there, that was a bit like a well filmed series some years ago called a Passion for Angling, you caught the essence of being out on and around the river roaming with light tackle, and the bit where you cut the music and let the natural sounds speak for themselves was ace, great to see that you were able to return to a river you fished as a kid and find it still in decent nick, at one time you would find what was once a nice river had been fouled up or reduced to an overgrown trickle.
    Super video boss, well done there mate.

      Thanks matey, great to hear you enjoyed some of the finer parts of the video. I sometimes try to do things a bit different to my rough and ready older approach to making videos. I'm lucky that despite all i've done, i can still enjoy a blank with those stunning sunrises, the wildlife and the peace and quiet.

    That's a nice section of river with some just as nice fish to boot. It looks undisturbed just the way it should be. It's getting harder and harder to find such places. Good job with the sight fishing. I catch largemouth and smallmouth bass in the springtime like that when there cruising the shallow water waiting to spawn. Cracking video.

    Great effort mate, like your moving up a level here. Loving the dawn scenery..agree it's easy to take for granted, but we anglers really are privilaged in experiencing a world many don't get to see and feel like us.

    Tell you what, mate....the quality of your videos is going through the roof. That one would have been perfectly at home as a hugely watchable TV programme on a mainstream channel. The whole production, imagery, fishing ability and the fact you're obviously a very likeable guy all go together to make it so enjoyable. I really wouldn't be surprised if a TV producer sees these soon and you get a call. Great stuff :)

    I grew up in Devon spinning on black furys mepps 2 and 3 and then moved up to the 4s when chasing the salmon..... I've been carp fishing for 4yrs now and it take so much gear and money and mechanics to cat has a fat cat...... that you can't eat...... when it's trout and salmon,... there straight in the pan...... but I've got a little river here on my Portsmouth angling society that has a good head of chub....... might do what I live best..... walk the river.... bump into mother nature and fish light and quiet.... think I might be going back to what I did best....... living and loving rivers .... thanks once again for your super duper advice

      Mate we can get enjoyment from all forms of fishing but you get back out, tiny rod, half a dozen small lures and go for an adventure. Fish places you never fish or that you haven't fished in years and see what is about. One fish might be all you manage but you''ll love it. Good luck pal let me know how it goes

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 лет назад

      Nice one Lennon. Yeah the chub love lures. Just get some small ones 2-5cm should be about right. spinners work, so do soft shads that you would use for perch. I like to use small plugs and I have a mixture of sink, suspend and float, different shapes and sizes and I just use what i fancy on the day. Chub are often found hanging off the edge of bushes and also off the end of a bit of flow waiting for some food. They often spook easily so travel light and have a few casts in likely looking spots and move on.

      Im the same as you, being a ripon lad it was the first proper river i ever fished. spent countless hours up there, plenty of chub hiding in the willows with some perch here and there, lots of grayling and the occational barbel. recognised it straight away from the video.

    I've caught chub on a wide variety of lures , Big s and the midi s which banged me a 5 pound 6 ounce chub , manns one minus baby version , Royoby mugger and Fox micro jerkbaits , surface poppers are good arboghast hula popper , rapala skitter prop it always astonishes me how hard a chub will hit a surface lure .

      +Peter Harman That's how you do it mate. Find a bit of new water and go see what happens. Take a few options lure wise but travel light and keep on the move and see what you can find. Bit of food and drink and you are away. I love exploring a new bit of water, I find the fishing is more exciting even if you don't catch as you don't know what to expect. Thanks for watching the videos mate and good luck on your exploration, hope you catch a few.

    First UK angler who fishis in the right way.You need to cast plugs al the wey to other score.The real monsters like to hide in the holes an pick up pray which falls from banks.It is tricky thing,and you luse plugs,but once you learn,IT becames murder of big chubes.Problem is that you must feel balance og each lure.You can not learn with cheap stuff and then use Duo Spearhead.Beckhend cast helps a lot

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 лет назад +1

      Not enough people using plugs in the UK. Everyone is on canals jigging soft plastics. Its so much more fun learning to work the different lures in different bits of the river. Using a floating lure to drift under a bush and then work it back. Using a sinking lure to slowly sink in to that deep dark hole under the bush. Or a suspending lure to slowly work and then drift through shallow faster water. I like to use the betetr lures as you say, not jsut cheap things, also like to use some well made custom plugs too.

    • @TheRadivoje
      @TheRadivoje 6 лет назад +1

      River Piker Try floating lure to cast as much as you can and take it to depth with rod tip all the way down to water.Slow retriev with downriver craft be the drive force.Strikes come when lure is coming in the main stream and when is on the way out.You can use twitch on the way in,and long pause on the back retriev om the edge of stream.Hope that can help little.Chub likes to take fish when they swim away,while trout ataks head on.

    Hi, I'm hoping for a bit of advice. I only started fishing my local river this year. It is filled with brown trout. I've experimented with different lures and from March to June Mepps Comet spinners were my favourite lure, However the past two months I haven't even got a follow with my spinners so I tried using different lures to find a replacement. I have found that the best lure I have for the trout at the moment is my Abu Garcia Tormentor 50mm Floating Crankbait. It is the only lure that I have, that the fish are taking in the river these past two months. It is an absolute trout magnet but the problem with it is that for some reason about 75% of fish that hit it don't get hooked!
    Yesterday it didn't hook 1 out of 3 fish that hit and today it didn't hook any of the 7 fish that hit it. I don't know why. Maybe I'm not setting the hook right, I'm not sure. The fish seem to grab it and just spit it out. I'm not sure how to change my strategy and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 лет назад

      dlow364 Let me know what rod it is you use mate. The trout are fast and they hit like mad so you have to react fast. Ultra sharp hooks and quick reflexes. Hopefully your rod has a fast enough action to help, a soft one isn't always the best. But I would expect you still to hook something. Make sure the line is tight so you can react to the slightest touch, any slack line will have a delayed reaction when you strike or when they hit. Make sure you are actually striking and not just lifting. I've had that before where it turned out the angler was just slowly lifting in to the fish. As soon as you see them take or feel it, hit it. We miss a few fish, they are so fast you miss some but you should hook up more. A long thin hard body might be hard to hook up as they hit it fast, grab the body but miss the hooks. A pike for example would just inhale the lure where the trout kind of bump it.

    • @dlow364
      @dlow364 9 лет назад +1

      +River Piker thanks very much mate. My rod is very light, 6ft and 25g casting weight and your right I'm not striking the fish hard because I'm afraid of tearing the hook from their mouth but I'll give it a go. Also, I'm thinking of getting a new pike rod to cast big lures like the buster jerk and wolf tail. I'm looking at a drennan E-sox piker 10ft lure rod. It has a casting weight of 100g and a test curve of 2.5lb. Do you think it'll do the job?

      dlow364 That could be it then. If ever you have some cash, you could also try a much lighter rod. Think more in the 1-15g range for the small lures. You'll cast them easier and you should also feel what the lure is doing better and get better response from any hits. Use small salmo hornet or jointed Yogi which catch us fish, along with size 2 and 3 mepps (or other spinners) plus even the 2 inch soft shads on a jig. small trout will hopefully hook up better on these. The big trout should be not as much problem as they take even pike lures, they are mental.
      For the pike rod. The rating is ok so you can use big lures. I personally don't like the long rods. I use a 6 ft 7in jerkbait rod and if I was using a fixed spool reel i'd probably only have an 8ft rod. I find the extra length gets in the way of me trying to work the lure. A 10ft rod would make casting distance much easier so if you were bank fishing a lake that would be handy. All down to personal preference though mate so just have a think what is right for you.

      +River Piker alright thanks. It was only that lure I was having a problem with the hooking and in my river they generally are small fish, with the biggest trout I've caught being just over a pound. Casting on my little rod is definitely not a problem as I can overcast the river which is about 12m wide if I use anything heavier than 3g and yes the pike rod is for lakes from the bank. I use Mepps comets 0s and 1s and a 2 at lakes. If I try use a 3 when the blade spins it bends my rod loads and activates my drag. Thanks for recommending those lures aswell

    Well done with all the camera angles etc. Really good vid
    Just one quick question... Where the hell can I buy yogi jointed lures? Only found one website (unless I'm spelling wrong?) sovereign superbaits. But they don't have much of a range in stock.
    Thanks

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад +1

      cheers pal. Yeah they are not easy to get hold of because they are a custom made lure. I get them made sometimes and sell them on but at the minute they are sold out. SS is your only option for now i think.

      Can't think of any at the minute. But any little small cranks will be good. Little Salmo Hornet or executer are nice lures. have a look at the little HRT cranks on AGMdiscountfishing. Can't think of any tiny jointed ones though.

    Hy pal! Really enjoied your video, and those pictures! Awsome! What lure you prefer when you fishing for chub? Is that jointed a Salmo frisky, or Rapala bx ?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад

      +Balint Koder Hi mate. Really glad you enjoyed the video, something a bit different from my normal stuff. For chub simple lures like Mepps or Blue Fox spinners, small soft shads work but I love using plugs more than anything. The little salmos will be great, the second chub was on a salmo hornet. The first chub came on a jointed Yogi lure, which are hand made by a guy in Poland or Slovenia I think and are a bit harder to get hold of.

    thank you. i leave in greece and i fishing carp catfish tourt chub....what rod buy???

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад

      You only need a light rod for trout and chub, a 2-10g lure rod would be perfect but for the carp and catfish you need to be using a strong rod as these fish grow much bigger.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад

      Now is good mate. Warmer weather means they are hungry and also looking up in the water for bugs and insects etc so if you know a spot with some chub go give it a go. I'm waiting for my new rod to come then I have plans to go chubbing again myself. :)

    can you give me a few tips on chub lures?
    place

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 лет назад

      hi mate. sorry i missed this message, youtube doesn't always notify me. Chub like small cranks 2-4cm is good. have a look round, any will work. That's half the fun finding a small crank and trying to catch. Salmo hornet is a good one to start with. Any lures that look like little bugs or insects will work too. They will take a spinner so something like a small mepps, and also lures like simple soft shads. summer they are easier to catch on lures so it's just finding where they are hiding.
