    That's a decent looking set up for $100. I agree about spending a little more on the reel than the rod as the reel takes most of the beating especially lure fishing when your casting and retrieving all the time. Especially with bait caster reels the higher cost ones come with better clutches and brakes for easier casting and less bird nests. I posted a video a bit ago catching river bluegill on a " river monster" ultra lite rod and reel set that I bought new for less than $20 that's about £12 now I can buy more lures that I don't need.

    My mainly used rod is the 4 piece HTO rockfish rover. I pack it in my rucksack easily and cycle along my local canal straight after work perch fishing. I have a daiwa crossfire rod for casting the slightly heavier lures 7g+ too. Paired up with a shimano aernos 2500, I switch between 10lb and 20lb braid on each spool and for each rod.
    Another great vid Paul. Good info for people struggling to decide. It certainly took me a while!!

      Sounds like you have it all figured out spot on there Kyle. Heard good stuff about the Rockfish rods, great idea getting a rod that is easy to stick in a bag and get on the bike. I keep going to do a video about biking and piking but my bike is still at work. Long story, puncture in car, cycled to work, left it there cos someone gave me a lift home! lol

    Great advice Paul.
    One of my sayings has always been "If you buy cheap, you buy twice"
    Its always worth in the long run spending the extra few quid on decent kit, cause it will last you a lot longer.
    Daiwa Reels have always stood the test of time and unless seriously abused, most can still be repaired decades after buying.
    As for Sonik Rods they get very good reviews, i actually nearly bought that same rod until Harrissportsmail sent me one of their mega discount emails and i picked up a Savage Gear Custom UL 2-7gram for a score more.
    Sometimes you can get a huge discount on a rod thats originally out of your initial budget thanks to the competitiveness of shops online.
    If anyone ever gets chance to, i suggest popping into Fosters of Birmingham as they have a huge selection of Lure Rods, Reels and tackle for you to look at, and Ade who works there certainly knows his stuff and his advice like Pauls here can make a huge difference in what you spend your hard earn cash on rather than wasting it on something that isn't fit for the purpose intended.

    Nice outfit there Paul. What you said about spending a bit more, is bang on. Better to buy a half decent rod than buy multiple rods that are no good. I have just purchased a nomura aichi 8 foot 8g to 24g, and paired it up with a okuma trio 40s. And two agility lrf rods 1 light and 1 medium. paired them with shimano exage 1500 and 2500. I am happy with all the tackle, I just need a heavy setup now. lol 🤔👍

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад

      Nice. you have plenty to play with there then. For the heavy set up just decide if it's baitcaster or fixed spool and then just try to get the lures sizes narrowed down and then go for it. Still decent rods for sale upto £50 but i'd go for a bit of quality for the reel. Seeing as you like the shimanos look at the Curados or Calcutta if you have some cash.

    have fun with the new rod buddy, totally agree need a selection of rods for different situations, I got a shimano yasei for light work, ugly stick light for medium and a savage gear mpp for heavy work me fave is the ugly stick so I am covered all the way up to 150 grams

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад +1

      you just need a few more rods for in between now! lol. Saw the Yasei, nearly took the plunge on one of them. So many rods to choose from you could buy them all :)

    Spot on paul used my new savage gear light rod 2-10gram and diawa ninja 1500 reel good testing now with loads of perch and 2x 9lb pike which were caught while perch fishing preformed perfectly , cost me 100 euros with braid and also got spare spool which ill use mono and try feeder fish

      Shows you don't have to spend ridiculous amounts to get a brilliant set up. I have Daiwa Ninja 3000 and it's a lovely reel. I've put that on a heavier rod for small pike lures but I need to test it out now on some fish

    ive just got my light river outfit up to 15g, then my heavy spinning rod which is usually for pike down the canal, thats 50g. and finally my work in progress jerkbait outfit which is a 100 gram greys rod, getting daiwa lexa 400, 80lb powerpro etc. this will hopefully make my 50g redundant.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад +2

      Good few set ups there mate. Keep your 50g set up because later on, you'll fancy throwing a few medium lures rather great big lumps of wood and plastic. Mistake we all end up making is selling a set up only to find later on we want it for something or some lures we have. for what you get second hand on most bits of kit, I just stick it in the cupboard just in case.

  • @Jimmynable
    @Jimmynable 8 лет назад +2

    My mate I go fishing with uses a savage gear road runner upto 70g I'm not sure the exact model, anyway he can cast 10g lures with it really well but I had a couple of casts with it and didn't like it just shows how people have different opinions.

    An interesting and useful video, wish I'd seen it earlier, it took me ridiculous amount of time recently to choose my first set up for lure fishing. In the end I went with an Abu Garcia Volatile Bass 10-28g 7'9" rod and a Shimano Hyperloop rear drag 2500 reel, they came to £68 total.

    • @AspiePickerr

      Tried the set up today, it works very well, the rod has a nice balance, and is very lightweight to hold, I'm not used to fishing and managed 3.5 hours using it without any problems. I didn't catch anything on my first time, but I had a really enjoyable afternoon fishing.
      A cyclist had a mishap and rode into the canal with her bike near the bridge, and was unable to swim to the bank as the bike was caught on her backpack, I managed to fish her out and then the bike, not using the rod lol, as I have no fish for a start of a PB yet, I have added 1 cyclist for today hehe.

    excellent advice Paul, I am normally a carp angler but i want to utilise my river thames more than i do for perch and Jacks i have purchased 2 rage roadrunner travel rods 3 - 16gm & 10 - 40gm up to what weight of fish would they handle as i do not want to be ripping mouths apart, this lure fishing is a whole new concept to me and i also want to take them on holiday this year to Mallorca any advice would be appreciated thanks.

    I've always used vintage gear, pins and cane so any rod not made of wood is an unknown entity,
    I got the ninja 2000, because it was one gram lighter than the 1500 and cheaper, plus extra spool,
    Perfectly smooth, faultless
    Or vintage Mitchell 408 which has a shorter handle than the ninja is perfect
    Currently on my fourth cheapo rod, my favourite is a twin tip something which was about twenty quid
    I found 7ft very useful to avoid near bank snags also 15gram max for maximum fun
    Like you say, you just have to jump in

    I have a gx2 they really are virtually indestructible they are perfect for trout perch n chub but would be no good for pike as they are too soft too set the hooks you would lose too many fish would definitely recommend would do for lrf fishing as well.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 лет назад +1

      I agree bud, too soft for pike fishing. You get lucky sometimes especially with ultra sharp hooks but I wouldn't take that rod to go chasing pike. I think i've decided it will be my chub fishing rod. I like smaller rods for rivers, when i'm clambering through trees or trying to get that awkward cast.

    I know you've covered it in previous videos Paul but could you recommend somewhere to look for a decent jerkbait/heavier rod, I'm having trouble getting hold of one. I've got a few 19cm SG but also want to get some meatier lures as well. I've looked on line for the Jaxon rod you were using but they not seem to make it anymore. Cheers bud.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 лет назад

      What kind of budget do you have for one mate? Lots of lads have gone for the Savage Gear MPP or they do a Big lure and jerk which are both decent price. If you have a bit more the roots I use is very good. Other options are custom rods from people like Marty at WVA but they are a bit more money.

    • @kentishfisherman3539
      @kentishfisherman3539 7 лет назад

      I'm a bit funny with rods, it's gotta be a cork handle for me. Anything up to the £100/£120 mark ideally. There's plenty of rods out there up to the 60g mark but not a lot 100g plus. I've been using an old Korum snapper for my 4plays but it's a bit soft. Everything seems to be catering for the drop shot/LRF market these days

    • @riverpiker

    oi oi pal i went out at tea time last night on my local trout river but i went to a part i haven't fished for at least 5 years it just looked the perfect place to hold trout a fast flow into a massive pool, i caught a wild brown within 5 mins and after 4 hours i had caught 7 😆 which is a p.b for me 😀 the 1st was around 2lb then they got gradually smaller but all decent sizes 😀 i only used maggots but what i wanted to ask is-if i used lures in that same pool would the fish eventually get spooked? i didnt want to chance it 😞*Tight Lines*
    ✌👍💙🎣😀

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 лет назад

      Nice one buddy top result and congrats on the pb mate. Yes they would become spooked eventually. You have to decide if you want to catch the most for the biggest fish and if you want to just have fun casting a few lures. Lure fishing is often about the whole lure fishing part and also the thrill of the hunt and then massively the the thrill of the take. So you just keep doing what you enjoy and if you fancy a change of scenery, take the lure rod, travel light and see how many more pools you can find. Great thing about lures is you can cover a mile or two in no time and with luck, it only takes one cast to land a whacker!

    Buy Shimano new Stradic 1000 ci4 1.5.1 and Fox rage rod 2 meters 3- 14 or 4- 18 grams 2.20 meters youre luv it.
    Catch almost everthing strong light and sensitiv . . . Great !
    And you forget all the others rods en reels.
    Use a light combo, less weight more feeling /sensitiv and no solid tip

    Paul,Is 40lb braid strong enough for lures up to 90 gram?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад +1

      Steve, it's all down to venue. If you are fishing snag free waters you would get away with it. If you start snagging lures on shopping trolleys and underwater tree roots 40lb probably won't be enough. If you are boat fishing flat bottom lakes it would be fine. You've probably got a chunky set up if you are throwing those so 60-80lb braid is the safest bet. I used to use 80lb on my lures up to about 60g. The lure set up cast them fine and I got most of my lures back.
      There's also another reason we go heavy and that's to prevent a crack off. With baitcasters especially, if the spool gets tangled on cast the braid digs in, and then snaps sending your lure in to the distance never to be seen again. 80lb braid helps protect against this where 40lb might not. If you aren't using a baitcaster though then you might be fine.

      You'll enjoy using it mate. just got back from a quick an evening session with a pal and i was using that. Perch were awesome fun and even had a jack of about 6-7lb on it. Really happy with it matey.
      While i'm on, keep an eye on my facebook page as I have some new lures which will be for sale soon. Been testing them and they are fish catching lures pal. Should have a nice selection from 2.5g small fat fry type to larger 18g 7cm lures. Actually if you watch the recent zander video we caught on a tiny orange lure, those plus some more. I've got a new batch coming in soon to sell with more to come and hopefully a permanent selection. Good lures, cheap, but they work.

Ultra tarty, critically balanced kits, fancy rigs, techniques, skip casting and a million other things. Most people just need to be told, but a rod, reel and some braid for £100 and go get fishing.
