  • Lure fishing - wire trace making. Fox Easy twist wire trace making.
    When lure fishing for pike, perch, zander and even trout you need to be using a wire trace if you think that pike are present. Pike have very sharp teeth which will cut through your mono and braid. I do not use flurocarbon traces because wire is better and offers more protection without fear of putting off the fish. Please also note that if using small lures and a light wire trace, if you find you are catching more pike than other species, switch to a tougher set up, including stronger wire trace and clips.
    In this video I will show you how to make a wire trace for lure fishing using Fox easy twist 20lb wire, Gemini genie mini link clips and a swivel. No crimping is needed, the only tools you need are some scissors/cutters a twiddling stick and a lighter. With practice these traces can be knocked up at home or on the bank in a matter of a few minutes.

    Brilliant! You've convinced me with the ease of producing them. I've already got a twisty hook thing so am ordering the materials!! Thankyou!

      Andrew Seddon No problem mate, that's what they are there for. Get some gear and get practising and in no time you will be making your own no problem. Much better, cheaper and you can make to suit then.

    Absolutely brilliant vid, and made to look so simple, as you say, 'Corrie' is trace making time, cheers again, mate.

      cheers for the comments. Good to know it does the job intended. Ideally I'd have better cameras for close up work but It's not turned out too bad. It is really easy to do this. I used to crimp but was never confident in my work. Since switching to twisting I'm very happy to use my own stuff. I knock them up in various strengths right up to 60lb, even my bait traces are done this way.

    Just a little tip ive seen other youtubers and pikers do when it comes to _'twisting'_ the wire trace. Get your forceps to bite down on the loose end and use that to whip/wrap/spin around your trace like an acrobat. It will serve the same purpose as the twisting tool if you havent got one.

    Good how to video,simple and easy to follow for any lure type novice.
    I`ve a few lure angler buddies who swear by them genie clips and use nothing else. They`re especially good when your fingers are a bit cold and numb and your having trouble,pressing down on normal clips,to open them.

      Yes they are great for that. Perfect for light lure fishing and quick changes. There are bigger sizes but I have never tried or tested them.

    I also saved money by making my own "twiddling stick" out of a small screw driver, a split pin, some insulating tape and a cable tie to secure it!

      River Piker Yeah very useful thanks. What do you think to the single strand titanium wire ? Worth the money or not ? Im new to lure fishing for pike.......

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  10 лет назад

      lee longworth Lee there's loads of pikers using the titanium traces. I use traces made up by a guy called Chico from Chicoslures.co.uk. I've never bothered to try to make my own as his traces I trust 100%. They are heavy jerkbait traces, and rated to 100lb so for use with big lures say 20cm in size, 50g plus. If you have big lures then buy two from him and they'll last you a couple of years, just change the clip every few months. Titanium is awesome stuff. If you are going lighter then other manufacturers make them but i've not much experience using other stuff. The titanium will be fine, just check the clips.

    Have you ever tried the spro 17 pound anti-kink wire trace? Its absolutely amazing stuff because you never get any kinks with it. This wire trace is also availible in heavier sizes.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 лет назад

      No mate never used that stuff. Is it titanium? I've used a few titanium traces that are pretty good at not getting kinked. I don't mind too much about kinked traces on my light gear. The trace is really only for protection so as soon as it kinks i just put another one on. On my heavier lures though having antikink wire is a must for me.

      River Piker yes its titanium, ive started using them because its cheaper since i dont have to change them. Btw thanks for replying and take care

    Just made up 6 wire traces using this method. piece of piss! However, you never mentioned that you'll be missing the skin of your index finger once you're finished!!! That final turn or two chewed my finger to bits. Keep the hints, tips and vids coming.

      +James fox Ha ha, yeah that's so true. Have you tried the heavier wire? Made up 5 with 60lb wire last night, finger ends chewed to bits. lol

      +River Piker I only had 14lb wire in my box so that's all I've done so far. Will buy some 20lb to match my braid although 14lb is pretty sufficient for what I'm planning on catching. The clutch will handle the rest if needs be.

    Hi River piker, as this video is a few years old do you still use genie clips and still recommend them please?

  • @Hutch118000

    Hi Paul, enjoy the videos very much and learned a lot from you. Can I ask what's size of wire and trace type you would use for ultra lite lures around the 3-7g size to maintain a good presentation while working the lure. I want to specialise in perch using light gear. Ta, Eric.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 лет назад +1

      Hi mate. Good to hear you are picking up some useful stuff from the videos. I would say have a look at the Knot2Kinky titanium wire which comes in really low breaking strain, 10lb or even 6lb i think, but will still give you some protection from pike. You can tie knots in the stuff similar to standard fishing knots. Now you won't be able to heave a pike in on the wire but it will save you being bitten off.
      Personally I mostly just use 20lb wire. Drennan 7 strand is pretty soft and not too thick diameter and I am happy to use this, though I still am often a little pike minded so rather than just going really light like you i might still stick on a rapala or a larger 2.5inch shad which I know will always catch me pike too.

    Nice video! But 20 lb wire definitely not for UL lures. If you want to make traces for UL lures try to make them from 0.2 mm thickness piano string. I had quite few pikes on that traces, some 8 to 12 lb. Cheers :)

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  9 лет назад

      Hi mate. I'm happy to use 20lb for my ultra light lures. I'm not fussy or think the perch are scared so happy to use a bigger wire to protect against the many pike I catch. I'd only go lighter/thinner if I was using real ultra light (ultra ultra light) lures such as bugs, snap beans or anything else around the 3cm or less. That's not my thing though so I don't bother. I do agree that ideally you would go lighter. I will often fish with 20lb braid so the 20lb trace is to match with the reason being I have more chance of getting lures back from snags. Thanks for your input, I'm sure it works for you and will work for many others. Tight lines bud!

    Try the 50lb / 75lb Tactical Angler clip. I dont think there's a pike in Britain with the jaw power to open one up!

    ah, well, just noticed that the Gemini Genie Link clips I bought are not a complete eye, there is a small gap between the eye and the shank, have I brought the wrong ones? I've studied your vid but can't see if yours are the same. Cheers

      You get the odd one which isn't quite closed but not really had a problem with them. Swap for a stay lok clip if you're not happy with it. It's all about having confidence in your kit so find what suits you and stick with it.

  • @rokhnroll

    Do you tie the wire trace straight to the braid main line ?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 лет назад

      Yes mate, nothing else needed. I prefer to use a palomar knot also which is easy and strong. Quick youtube search and someone will show you how to do that if you don't know.

    Do you NEED the twiddling stick?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 лет назад

      Some people use crimps instead but i prefer to twist. A few people use forceps clamped on and spin them round, but to be honest a twiddling stick is a few pounds and makes life so much easier in my opinion.

      River Piker I've come up with my own idea I've gone into my noddie box and knicked a baiting needle. I like to avoid giving money to companies that promote the pencil grip haha
      Have you ever tried fast hatch or spiral lure clips? Picked some up recently gonna try em out, usually just go with gemeni mini clip or for bigger stuff the SG staylok rated at 45kg - idk what size it is tho

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 лет назад

      not used the hatch but those fastach clips are good. BFT have now brought a range out. No moving bits that will break or open up. The gemini are fine for the light stuff, I just noticed that you need to be careful if using really thin diameter wire though as the eye on the clip has a small gap.
