How to Remove Downlights from the Ceiling
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 апр 2016
- Looks easy... but it is not. The new LED downlights, unlike old fashioned dome downlights, do not come with double butterfly clips. Instead a simple spring does the job of holding it in place, but it is utterly foolish design, as it does not allow easy removal for maintenance purposes, or when you wish to paint the ceiling boards. This video will show you how to overcome the problem.
Thanks for the guide!!!
Welcome!
Wonderful idea!
Thanks...six years late.😁
Great idea! Will go make one right now.
Here's another useful idea

Interesting comment mr Dundas! Wow, your invention even has an adjustable prop..a stick from floor to ceiling? Any video? I thought i was the only one with this downlight issue, surprisingly nearly 5,000 people area too!
Ok
Thats OK for simple downlighter but not for the present day ones that have to be in a can which has very long springs that are much stronger. The new types are an even more stupid design and will certainly destroy the ceiling board around the hole.
I have made a special tool that has two half round halves that fit around the can when you pull it out about 12mm. soldered to each half is a curved metal piece about 10mm that goes into the hole between the can and the plasterboard, so that when you pull the springs through they press on the metal, not the plasterboard. The two halves are held against the ceiling by 10mm plywood cut to fit around the can to support the metal inserts, and these are held up from the floor by an adjustable prop. All very complicated, but it works most of the time.
Why don't manufacturers realise that we all have this problem and design a downlighter can that is secured by a screw system like a dry lining box, not by springs, or is that too obvious for the designers that don't have to deal with this problem that they have created?
+1 for a screw system. Having just encountered the joy of replacing downlights I am completely baffled by the state of things with these clips. It's not like a plastic threaded sleeve is going to be an expensive item to produce.
7 years passed...any improvement?
Thanks!

How many engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Hahahaha. In the good old days changing a lightbulb is a simple matter. Your grandma could do it. These days if your LED Downlight fails, good luck to you. I hope my videos have helped. My next video HOW TO MAKE MOTION DETECTOR LED DOWNLIGHT from old Downlight, will be released very soon. Do subscribe my channel in RUclips, click the bell, and you will be notified of new videos.

@@HumbleIdeas was very helpful! Thanks. At least it's easier than removing a car headlight lol

How do you know where the spring is?
The spring is provided with the light for this design. Usually the manufacturer expect you to figure out how to attach it but I took a long time figuring out so this clip shares my learning journey 😄
