That commentator you were talking about was actually Kevin Harvick. He just retired from NASCAR last year. He had 22 years in cup series and came into the series actually as Dale Earnhardt Sir’s replacement after his untimely passing. Kevin knows his stuff. Him and Clint Boywer in the booth are both ex drivers that retired fairly recently.

@@ExploringTheSmokeSo right now FOX Sports is airing the races. On June 16 the races are aired by NBC Sports. This has been going on for years. And with it controversy over "who does it better?" between the two networks coverage of the races. Personally I think NBC does a better job, but honestly I don't think its worth arguing over. My complaints with FOX are miniscule and I can tolerate them. Anyway, you're new and this is something that can be confusing when the switch comes between networks.
Also as a Larson fan... welcome to the club! The kid can drive anything. He'll be driving an F1 for the first time at the Indianapolis 500 and then take a helecopter 579 miles to Charlotte motor speedway and drive the Coka-Cola 600 all in one day... That's crazy, and has only been done by a handfull of drivers. Talk about numb-butt! 😄

@@ExploringTheSmoke the basic argument between networks among the fans is camera coverage and commentator enthusiasm. Basicly Fox isn't keeping up with good camera coverage and the commentary is rather bland.. vs NBC's camera coverage and a more enthusiastic commentary crew.
I will say that commentary has gotten better for FOX with Harvick in the booth now. Bowyer is just.... 🤦‍♂️ I felt like I'd loose brain cells listening to Bowyer in the the past seasons. 😆
Since your now a fellow Larson fan, I'd check out anything about Larson's past as he has a little controversy too.. personally I didn't think it was a big deal, I still go by "sticks & stones", but he has made his amends and has done more for the Nascar namebrand since his suspension. You should also check out any historical videos on Rick Hendrick and why the #5 car is so important to him.

A lot of the best throwbacks will do that, where it's not the same sponsor coming back but the branding on the car has been adapted to mimic the style of the old sponsor. Darlington is such an interesting track - originally when they were building it in 1949, they wanted to build it as a conventional, symmetrical oval, but the farmer who owned the plot of land to the southwest of where they were building it refused enormous offers to sell a large chunk of his land as it housed a large minnow pond, so they ended up having to redesign the track to be much narrower at the western end, causing it to be a strange, almost egg-like shape. Drivers and team mechanics always say it’s one of, if not the most challenging track on the schedule because of how differently they have to drive into the corners at each end of the track, and how balanced and dialled in the setup of the race car has to be in order to be consistently fast through both ends. Crazy to think that one of the most challenging race tracks possibly in the world came about purely because a stubborn farmer in South Carolina didn’t fancy selling his land back in 1949 😅

And. The banking was originally intended to act like a wall to stop cars from flying out. But the drivers realized that racing on the banking is much faster than racing on the flat part of the track. Thus, why the track is so narrow. It was never meant to have cars run up there

  • @TreyFurrow

Darlington is THE hardest track on the schedule u have to be right next to the wall to make speed and the way the tarmac is it chews through tires within 5 laps the tires are basicly wore out and one end is much more narrower than the other cause they had to build around someones pond but with it being so hard for the drivers it always makes a great race like this one

This track is one of the oldest on the NASCAR calendar. The reason why the track is so thin is because when the track first opened and ran its first races the only place the drivers would be driving is the top lanes and that’s not where they were intended to drive. So they changed the track to be only TWO LANES WIDE

Darlington, nascars oldest speedway on the season's race schedule.
Harold brassington a retired race car driver, inspired by the crowds at Indianapolis motor speedway, wanted his own race track. Buying 70 acres from farmer sherman ramsey, the track was built on a cotton/peanut field.
Harold was forced to make the track into a egg shaped oval because he promised to not disturb Sherman's minnow pond. So turns 3&4 are a tighter radius, narrower and more steeply banked than 1&2. That tighter radius and flat part of the track makes entry at speed into pit road difficult and a lot of race cars have spun out misjuding there approach into the pits.
Built in 1949 they had the 1st race on labor day 1950. There was a 80 car field for the 1st race. For years after it was the biggest race on the schedule until they built daytona in 1959. Keep in mind most other tracks they ran back then were dirt tracks. the track asphalt has always been abrasive to very abrasive as the asphalt got older. In the 1950's the race cars were using street tires. And they'd blow out from the abuse of going around the track in a short amount of time and run out of tires they brought 2 the track. They went into the infield and asked race fans if they could borrow there wheels and tires off there street cars they drove to the track to finish the race.
Some fans didn't get there wheels back. Or got back a blown set of tires. So to this day tires wear FAST here. So race cars with new tires and more grip, zing right by race cars with older tires. The track length is 1.366 miles around.the flat part of the turns was used as the racing surface back in the 1950's when race cars didn't go that fast. And the banking was there to help you from hitting the guardrail they had back then. So it wasn't built for modern faster race cars. Nobody built race tracks like this back in 1949 anyway. They didn't replace the gaurd rails in the turns until somewhere in the late 1970's or 1980's.
Its so hard to drive because the narrow progressive banking.
The top lane in 1&2 is 23 degrees and you gotta run up there to go the fastest. Plus your tires are wearing out very fast. So how fast you went into a turn may not work and have you sliding into the wall the next lap. Alot of drivers end up scraping the wall witch is called the darlinton stripe. Plus turn 3&4 gas a odd racing line you drive through that part of the track. Get it wrong and you'll hit the wall. Your racing the track more than your racing other cars. They get up to 184mph here.
Called the lady in black and also called the track too tough to tame.
They moved the start finsh line to the back strait in 1997 so they could put up a larger grandstand. For a detailed tour of this track go to stapelton 42 you tube channel. Type in Darlington speedway.
75 years of history at this track.

Early 2004, i was being wooed by a company that wanted me to take control of all maintenance operations for an entire division within their firm. I had already decided to accept, but was holding out for a better deal. This was greatly aided by an employee that was already working within said division, whom I had known since our school days. With his clandestine input i managed to not only improve my own personal hiring package, but also negotiated for better conditions/funding for my newly acquired team. Management even threw in two tickets for the Carolina Dodge Dealer's 400, held in Darlington that year. I told them that i needed four. They caved, and I took myself, my wife, my friend(the MVP who had made the deal possible), and his wife to that Darlington Spring race on the company's dime.

The All Star race is 2 parts. First race is to get into the final race 100 laps each. The winner gets $1,000,000. Larson will be out this whole week to practice for Indy 500. Larson is also my favorite as well, just a powerhouse full of raw talent. Reason he wrecks so much is because he is pushing these cars to the absolute edge of out of control at every race. That is why i like his style. Plus he races sprint cars which in my opinion is harder than Nascar. Lets get that championship trophy #5

Interesting fact with Keselowski's victory that you should chew on Jack. The last time the six car was in Victory Lane was the summer of 2011 at Daytona. So Brad Keselowski is finally brought Jack roush's Flagship number 6 to Victory Lane for the first time in over 13 years. Think about that!
Edit: Kyle Larson is my favorite driver as well. Great choice for your favorite as well. I'm hoping that he does well in both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 2 weeks from yesterday and completes all 1100 miles. The last time this was done was by Tony Stewart back in 2001, who finished third at Indy, then sixth at Charlotte.

Brad Keselowski's throwback paint scheme pays tribute to the Tom's Castrol Toyota Supra race car, as seen in what is now the Japanese Super GT Series (previously known as the Japanese Grand Touring Car Championship, or JGTC for short) which ran and won numerous races in the GT500 class. The car is incredibly famous for its depiction in the Gran Turismo racing games and is well-known even outside Super GT fan circles. As someone who's in love with the Gran Turismo series, I'm so glad I got to see the car in victory lane. The cherry on top was that 110-race winless streak, snapped in an instant!
