    A $1400 car payment doesn’t include insurance, maintenance and gas. These people are getting close to $2K a month just to commute to the car dealership, insane!

      Mine is 1000 a month but its electric so almost no maintenance cept a yearly state inspection and new tires after a few years, eletric is cheaper than gas, I pay about 15 bucks a month in electric to charge the car and my insurance is pay by mile and its about 50-60 a month

      Yeah, before that I was never higher than $345. I bought a Prius and got extended warranty because of batteries and such. That brought my initial payment of $340 to $406.

      @@jwg9338 wow. I would never. My ex bought a Denali pickup and his was 850. Even though the money coming in was great, that to me was not worth it. But when the money slowed down on the business he resorted to having someone steal it and dump it for the insurance. 🤷🏾‍♀️

      Same here! I bought a car new in 2014 that was $420/month, paid it off and am still driving it. However, every month I thought to myself "never again", I couldn't even IMAGINE buying something for $1,400 per month. I pay less than that for my dang house.

    Serious question:
    Could this part of the dealership strategy. To make the consumer seem like their $600 payment is "not so bad". I think this may be a set-up video to trick the consumer. They could reason that "well at least my car payment isn't as high as the guy that works here."

    I work at a factory. Everyone that gets past their 90 days buys new trucks. I get laughed at for driving my 1997 Silverado with 244 thousand miles. I simply tell them I own the truck, the truck doesn't own me

    I have not had a car payment in 25 years. I buy 3-5 year vehicles with cash from the owner, no dealer. No car loan, no loan payments is the only way to go for me.

      25 years, congrats! I also buy from owners and not stealerships, but always remember to have a 3rd party mechanic check the vehicle over first!! I’ve been lucky but my sister was looking at a vehicle that was in a unreported accident. It had silicone and JB weld everywhere. Glad I told her to have it checked out first!!

      @@thesig301 I make $100k and you couldn’t force me to sign a $1400 car payment if you held a gun to my head. Assuming they have a $300k+ mortgage along with current inflation costs, they’re basically living broke with that salary (and that’s commission on a great year, which means a bad year = $70k or less).

      @@reese85 exactly what I was thinking. $300k mortgage on pre recession interest rates of ~4% would be like ~$1600/m. $1400 + $1600 = 3k/m or $36k per year. Assuming a bad year for a car salesman is $70k or roughly $50k after taxes. They are still likely fine. Either way they clearly took on those payments because they can afford them. To make everyone else happy, I never said it was smart financially tho.

    I paid off my Mustang in 4 years, at a monthly payment of $225. That was three years ago, and the car is still in great shape, looks great and still fun to drive. I think I'll keep it awhile.

      The total price of the car is what should matter most, not the monthly payment.
      Some people can request a 2 year loan and that will make their monthly payments stand out as expensive.

      They don’t get a discount, BUT they do tend to “have to/need to” get all the option packages so the “look successful” Dealerships are horrendous places to buy a car in America. No matter what brand.

      Our culture thinks 100k miles is the end of the life of the vehicle and it needs to be retired. 100k on a Toyota, Honda or Mazda is just breaking in. I don’t buy a vehicle under 70k miles on it.
      People are so disconnected from basic maintenance and repair that the idea of putting $800 a year into a routine repair is asinine but will easily spend $9,600/year in payments

      @@synchronicity458 My last 4 vehicles have all got over 250,000 miles. 2 over 300,000. With proper care and maintenance of a vehicle there is 0 reason someone can't get 200,000+ miles if they do not get in an accident.

      If you service/replace the wheel bearings, the wheels won't fall off. Had that happen to me once. I got a new spindle and wheel bearings and put it back together and continued driving.

    I know a guy that made a seven figure income for years. His daily driver is an old Ford Bronco with tons of dings on it. He retired WAY early and has a nice collection of debt free rentals giving him cash. Car payments are so stupid.

    I had an $850 car payment on a new Lexus 10 years ago, after I got rid of it I vowed never again. Ive had the epiphany but clearly many have not. Who in their right mind would happily sign off for a $1000 payment. If you can afford the payment, but couldnt afford to put much if anything down, you CANT afford the payment.

      I’m in the same boat. Both of my back door locks are broken so I disabled the external handles. I re-enable them when I have to get the yearly cat inspection but car won’t lock when they are enabled. So as soon as the car has been inspected I disable the handles again. On top of that my fans don’t work so when it’s cold or raining I have to drive around with windows down so windshield does not fog up

      Right lol mines 260 a month brand new 2024 and was regretting it immediately. i put down half though for the down payment. Car prices are insane right now but my car was totalled a year ago and saved a lot for big down payment. Next time def getting used like my first car vw jetta had it for 10 years and only paid 12,000 which is quarter of prices now.

    I sold new cars for two years. Yeah, a lot of guys I worked with fell for it. I considered what we were selling - Hondas (which are great reliable cars), and then instead bought a car that was 21 years old, put new matching tires on it and a few parts, and I drove that to work. And I loved it. And, even after upgrading it with parts, I sold it for what I had into it minus gasoline after a number of years.

      that's the thing the majority of people don't understand, having a nice car doesn't necessarily mean you are wealthy, in many circumstances it just means you have more debt.

    Started watching Dave about 6 months ago. It inspired me to buy my first brand new car, don’t regret it at all. Some of their math and “just buy a 10k car” just doesn’t work. Safety actually does matter. Reliability matters. But don’t buy more than you can easily afford.

    I bought a high milage 2007 Toyota Matrix a year as and a half ago for $4300 cash. Came with decent snow tires also. It had glitches I was able to get fixed over a few months. I like it because I can fit my bicycle and gear in the back. I can put a lot of stuff in it. Even moved a big wheelbarrow for my roommate with it. I like it a lot and it's debt free. Not bad looking either. Has some rust but I live in the Adirondacks where they salt the roads in the winter.

      Yeah that’s a good point. If you buy something under $10k for cash, you can just get liability. That will save you around $2k a year in the extra premiums you would pay on something new where you would be required to get full coverage.

    Part of this is just the culture of working at a dealership. Notice how they all had brand new vehicles WELL above average monthly payments. My brother used to work at one and he had a new vehicle every 10 months it seemed like. Rolling over thousands of bad debt each time he traded. Tried to tell him but it seemed normal to him. Everyone at the dealership was doing the same thing.

      Yup prices have got insane. Used trucks with high miles can easily be over $25k now. New is $70k. I had to adjust my view in regards to trucks and just buy what I needed as opposed to what I wanted. That saved me 30k, not including the interest on top of that 30k that I would have had to pay back.

    On our debt free journey, baby step 2.
    We have 2 cars, one paid off and one financed.
    We owed $6800 on the one, dealership gave us $6900 to get us out of the debt for good!
    It feels SO good to be car debt free and to have $378 back in our pockets every month!

    About to finish my Camry SE 2018 and you have no idea how good that feels! I'm paying less than 400 a month and I'm glad I got it pre pandemic

    My wife and I bring in a little over 120k a year net and have two payments in the 600s and it makes me sick.

      I make 150k, my wife stays home and we have two vehicles, 2019 HRV and 2020 Corolla.
      I couldn’t imagine having 1200$ in vehicle payments 😂
      Edit: we have one payment of $240/mo, I could pay it off but prefer to invest.

    I always drive my cars until the wheels are falling off. When the vehicle finally breaks down and costs more to fix than it is worth, then I go get a used vehicle that fills the need of my family. Unfortunately my latest one I could not buy in cash, but the payment is $290, which I can live with for a Ford Explorer with 60k miles.

      Just keep an eye on it for overheating. My brother owned 2 and both had overheating issues.

    I think it's been discussed that these clips of car dealership people saying their car payment is $1k+ is somewhat fake. They are doing that to normalize the $700 a month payments with the idea that its "not as bad" as these $1k+ ones

    My co-worker has a $600 car pymt on a 2022 Nissan Rogue, her mother's is $900 same car premium level, her son $700 on a 2022 Nissan Altima. Unbelievable to have those pymts.
