Dreams do come true! That spine is an inexplicable choice but that won’t stop me from finally owning a solid chunk of classic Defenders in oversized hardcover! What a time to be alive 😭
Dude! I was noticing how thin the pages were throughout the video. I was wondering if that was a new standard but it seems more like an exception with this and one of the Conan volumes? I’m glad you commented on it too...super noticeable.
Despite the spine looking like someone changed the font size by accident, I'll definately get this! I'm a huge Hulk fan and my favourite Hulk artist is Sal Buscema, and if I'm not mistaken this is the first time Buscema drew Hulk (besides inking a few early Incredible Hulk issues).
Sal's wonderful work with the Hulk first attracted me to this comic. I believe he drew the Hulk in an Avengers issue #88, but it was on the Defenders that he really blossomed.
All three of those covers are incredible.. I love it! Thanks for showing off the book as always, Omar! And thanks to whoever brought it up to Omar about the missing issues. :) Algorithm gang!
Thanks for the addressing the issue. It’s defo’ the IMAC Turkey. Every book from that printer has thin pages with the art work bleeding through. Is this something you can bring to the attention of Marvel? Kind regards JC
This Bronze Age gem really exemplified the growing of Marvel comics at the time. What I find most interesting is that when I think of the Defenders big four, as drawn in the 70's, I often think of Sal's work on this series first. Unlike the Avengers, this group really didn't have that defining Arch-Enemy (as the Avengers had both Kang and Masters of Evil early on) the reader could latch onto. After all these years I can still remember the page 2-3 splash from Defenders #2 with Dr. Strange, Namor and Silver Surfer.
I really am very thankful that I found your channel and I am too am a Marvel comics fan and I have been trying to get the Marvel Masterworks of the defenders now that they came out with this beautiful Omnibus I decided to get the standard cover. I love the works of Gene Colan especially when he did my favorite horror Omnibus the Tomb of Dracula and sci-fi /horror comedy satire comics like Howard the duck which I am currently reading love Howie. I am also a fan of Ross Audru works when he did the ASM comics and Sal Busemu works too. I am picking up this Omnibus along with Amazing Spider Man Omnibus volume 5 and Moon Knight Omnibus Volume 1.
The spine and paper quality have made this go from a "must-buy" to a "maybe if I get a really good deal" for me sadly, I wonder if that spine is intentional or not.
Awesome overview Omar! I’m definitely getting this. I’ve been thinking about this spine and have come up with a possible reason for it. This Omnibus originally was going to be a skinny one based on their original or old mapping with not as much content but Marvel may have “fattened” it up a bit and you yourself expertly asked them to add some crucial issues as well. Marvel may have tried to compensate for the bigger book and went to the thinner paper (which you commented on its transparency) but it didn’t make as much difference in its overall size. The spine was designed for a thinner Omni and was not corrected graphically before resizing the dust jacket. Anyways I think it’s a minor mistake and I’m so happy it was made (other than not being made)! I’ll take it any way I can get it in Omni format.
Marvel needs to step their game up on paper quality here. These books aren't cheap.Kind of why I dont buy a whole lot of Epic Collections anymore.Anyhow,I have all the Defenders Masterworks and will stick with them because of the vastly superior paper quality, and because that spine is ..yuckus.Great video as always,Omar!
I really hope the thin paper doesn't start becoming the norm for the Omnibus and Epic lines, that will be very disappointing. Paper quality is very important on collections like these.
Agree, these are not cheap books, almost transparent paper is definitely not suitable, paper quality is something that will make me think twice about pre-ordering in the future.
@@coreywheatley2667 Yep, my Silver Age Cap Vol 1 (my first omnibus ever) is one of those first printings, as are the Byrne FF I have. I was going to self those, but couldn't when I felt how solid the paper is. Plus I love those faux leather covers.
Thanks for the overview Omar. I like the Defenders but will wait for the Epic of these early issues. I was thinking about picking up the Busiek Conan omni but if the paper quality is as poor as this omni then I might pass. For these prices it should be premium all the way
I cannot wait to pick this up. What a great collection... I didnt really get into the Defenders until Bendis's Age of Ultron. But as a kid I was always interested in the older silver age stuff but was too busy reading X-Men and Spider-Man.
I'm a little sad to hear about the weird small print design on the spine and the thin pages, but this omni is still a must buy for me, because I love Defenders. In the 70s, when a lot of best-selling Marvel titles were getting repetitive, Defenders was that rare beast that used existing properties in the Marvel Universe in inventive ways. A lot of the stories here are campy, but they're campy in the best possible sense - they're silly fun, without being inane or perfunctory. Thomas and Englehart did some of their best superhero work on these issues. There's even an Englehart issue - I think it's Defenders #7 - that had me laughing out loud when I read it on Marvel Unlimited. I really want to see a Defenders Volume 2 come out some time so we can get those Steve Gerber issues.
I haven't bought an Omnibus in over a decade because of the Epic collections. Been waiting years for the Defenders Vol 1 Epic to be printed but with this now out, I doubt if it will come out anytime soon. So I guess you win Marvel, I'll buy this because I only have so much patience.
The classic Defenders are huge favs of mine. Only read a handful of those issues though. Glad Marvel included the missing three issues and the letter pages. Ordered the Adams cover (featured in the video) through FLCS via FOC. In fact, the Defenders omni is technically the first or second omni that I am ordering via my FLCS. Order one or two omnis from my FLCS a month now. Still buy omnibuses from IST and Cheap Graphic Novels (occasionally Half Price Books and Amazon too) though.
Looking forward to receiving my already-ordered copy of this one. I still have all the Essentials books of The Defenders and this omni will allow me to read these stories again in glorious colour. Roll on Defenders Omni Vol 2!
Well, I hope this means we'll have an Epic Collection of this by the start of next year. .... I don't get too many Omnis, but I would definitely pass on the Turkey printings.
I think a lot of folks in the comments will talk about this too, but recent collected editions (epics/omnis) from marvel have thinner paper for the same or, in some cases, a higher price tag. Maybe it is unfair to compare, but I recently picked up the Black Hammer library editions which were cheaper and much nicer than any of my marvel books and it's made me a little sour to continue spending money on Marvel - the books are just a harder sell after comparison. What might be a more fair comparison, I have the X-Cutioner's Song OHC and the paper there is much nicer than recent omnis too. I hope Marvel will understand that fans are noticing, but if books keep selling, I have doubts.
I agree with this, the Dark Horse library editions put Marvel and DC to shame. The paper thickness is great, binding fine, and price is half what the big 2 charge. The reason this book sucks compared to other modern marvel omnis that have thinner pages is this is the hellish trifector (thats an American word, right?😆): Thin pages Poor binding Unattractive spine

Got this preordered. Sold my avengers defenders war epic to fund this omnibus purchase luckily for me I sold it for the price I'm paying for the omnibus. The text of the spine is a little weird, I prefer normal text size, but not a big deal for me.
Surely the spine issue is a mistake. Marvel must know by now what an OCD lot us Omnibus collectors are. I know it shouldn't be a deal breaker ( really it should be the content that we're buying the book for) but I don't think I'm going to risk buying this only for a "revised" edition to get put out a few months down the line. The thin paper stock is a bit of a worry also. Was really looking forward to this release. Omar: Do you get to give feedback to Marvel on the build of the books they send you or are production schedules too far ahead for you to have an input at this point? You seemed a bit concerned also about the issues with the book. Great enthusiasm and knowledge as always!
Cheap Graphic Novels just blocked my account because I brought up concerns on how they are shipping their merchandise through the USPS, because I have orders going back to February 10, 2021. I know about the storms I know all that. I just got to the point that my patience has ran out. I sent you Near Mint and email this morning, with CGN, to say hey if you are aware of this problem with shipping from the CGN, have you told your viewers? This all stems from The Deluxe Marvel Handbook being shipped last week on the 17, and seeing that it has been sitting at USPS since then, and is not scheduled to arrive until this Thursday the 25th. I live less than an hour away from CGN, I should of had it Friday at the latest. So yeah just wanted to keep the community informed. Excelsior!
Love the 60s and 70s Marvel stories, especially anything with the Hulk in it. But when oh when are we going to get an Incredible Hulk Volume 2 omnibus? The Incredible Hulk comic got better and better and the late 60s and early 70s was a golden time for Hulk stories and artwork. So please Marvel, Incredible Hulk Volume 2 omnibus please!
I started read from#106. Yes, the font on the spine is shitty-don't know what they were thinking. I wouldn't mind getting it. Any other omni's though? time & populariry/sales will tell. keep up the good work, omar.
I'm really on the fence on this one- the tiny Ditko run Dr. Strange Omnibus was very fun but as far as I know they haven't released any collected editions between that and this which would help make up my mind.
Great review as well, still a bit on the fence about that one. Strange they have reduced the page quality, that is one that that does matter to me. Also change of the logo on the spine ... very strange. Still, a lot of great stories in the book.
Hey uncanny Omar thank you because I was thinking about some old school defenders and I appreciate you and let me know if there's an omnibus of the new fantastic four coming out
It was hard to pick a DM cover, I like both. Picked the issue 1 though. And I agree the spine font is really off putting, ugh. And the thin paper sucks. Unrelated to this Omni but thets one thing I’m always interested in knowing when buying second (or later) printings of Omnis, it seems like earlier printings often are thicker paper which sucks when new Omnis often have upgraded or added content.
The ONLY character I don't like is the Hulk so I'll be picking up the standard cover because he's not the focus like the other two. I just dont like how the spine looks odd but it's not a deal breaker for me.
Certainly getting this one, but I always remember it as the Avengers/Defenders CLASH not a war, memory playing tricks or was it rebranded after the fact, I wonder? Oh, Sal Buscema was referred to as "Our Pal" Sal in the credits.
@@davidgraham8299 Definitely. It just looks unsightly. I also do think it was a mistake, so I'd rather not fork out the cash for something not printed correctly and then see a second printing later down the line where it's fixed.
I'm trying to stick to late 80s/90s/00s but I may get some of this 70s goodness. I was thinking the art looks great... surprised to hear about the inker fued.
I think I can live with keeping my Masterworks for this, especially in light of that super thin paper. Not good, especially for a low page count omnibus like this one.
Why..... why they need to change things! Who asks for this??? Cannot they keep a nice continuity?? Okay, nice that they put some colors on the hardcover as well, not that I am keeping it without the dust jacket. But why reduce the font size of the title??? That makes absolutely no sense!! Really disappointing to hear that now even at these most expensive versions of books we have transparent pages!! :( Of course when there are darker colors cannot see through, but that's why, the pages are still thin.... :( Marvel, Marvel... why are you trying to ruin your own reputation??
Was this a printer error or what ? now I’m going to have to get a new jacket for this, what a stupid idea if this was how it’s meant to look. I hate how DC take too long to bring out omnis and never reprint but their dust jackets are mostly always on point. Great overview as always 👌🔥
Silver Surfer isn't a "big part of the Defenders." 🤣 Stan didn't want anyone else to use him so they dropped him pretty quick and he reappeared only rarely.
The spine is atrocious, I can't believe they'd botch that so badly. Binding looks mediocre, at best. Not happy to have pre-ordered this and have to "settle" for expensive books.
Thanks Omar for the, as always, great review! I am really interested in these stories, but that new look of the spine really turns me off. The font is way too small for the size of the book, completely out of balance visually. I really hope that this is not the new design for all upcoming Silver Age books.
New Epic Collections from Marvel are great builded books, but they also have those thin see thruogh pages. I'm from Turkey and I wish I can access those guys and tell show this video and make sure they know about this problem.
As a general rule, I do not like all female books and visa versa male books. One two issues are fine. With Defenders, I'm torn as starting issue 4 Valkyrie shows up. I'm still not sure whether to buy it in that New Defenders I'd buy for sure.
I loathe that hate keeping by Stan Lee of Silver Surfer. He’s purely the idea of Kirby. Lee had no involvement with his creation. He was handed the pages of FF48 from Kirby and then fell in love. Without Stab Lee Marvel would be nothing but this reminder has really angered me.
I love the Bronze Age reprints. The bright and sometimes psychedelic combination of colors look great even on modern glossy paper. It's a real step up from the garish look of some Golden and Silver Age art on glossy paper.

I preordered vol 1 Hull and hope they release more. Ive mainly been collecting all the 60s omnis from all characters!
Yikes! That spine design is uhm . . . 😬
I started read from#106. Yes, the font on the spine is shitty-don't know what they were thinking. I wouldn't mind getting it. Any other omni's though? time & populariry/sales will tell. keep up the good work, omar.
I knew many will freak out because of that spine. Try collecting Astro City ladies and gentlemen and let your OCD's flare up :D
Really thorough overview! I'm looking forward to going through these old storylines.
--- now how soon before there's an Invaders omnibus?
Thanks for this preview, seriously considering cancelling my preorder due to the paper quality and generally terrible build of this book.
I'm really on the fence on this one- the tiny Ditko run Dr. Strange Omnibus was very fun but as far as I know they haven't released any collected editions between that and this which would help make up my mind.
Hey, I loved the Essential line. Any idea how expensive American stuff was (and still is, but it used to be worse) in Europe? :p
Great review as well, still a bit on the fence about that one. Strange they have reduced the page quality, that is one that that does matter to me. Also change of the logo on the spine ... very strange. Still, a lot of great stories in the book.
Hey uncanny Omar thank you because I was thinking about some old school defenders and I appreciate you and let me know if there's an omnibus of the new fantastic four coming out
The spine looks like an OHC. oh well.
So, Is Marvel still better than DC at producing Omnibus? Are they equal? Is DC doing better than Marvel recently?
If they printed it in Russian, back to front, upside down it would still be better than some DC omnis.
I stick to masterworks, paper quality and colour much better plus more handy
Top of my List 🙂
Just had to cancel my pre-order. Not willing to take the hit for a spine that bad. I’ll wait for the reprint. Also seems mighty thin?
The spine didn’t bother me. It was the paper.
@@NearMintCondition That too! Shame, because I was otherwise looking forward to it.
Is the spine really that important?
Marvelous!
Valkyrie did not skip leg day on that regular cover
Was this a printer error or what ? now I’m going to have to get a new jacket for this, what a stupid idea if this was how it’s meant to look. I hate how DC take too long to bring out omnis and never reprint but their dust jackets are mostly always on point. Great overview as always 👌🔥
Shocking spine font. This is a hard miss for me, even if all the stories were awesome (which I'm not sure)
What were thinking with that spine? 🤢
That spine is awful. I am going to have to make my own custom spine. I very much hope Marvel isn't going to make a change like that permanent
Omar, please let David know these spines are awful. Why is the text so small?
And then there’s the super thin paper where colours are showing through pages from the other side, deal breaker for me.
@@FrankCastlesConscience all the Turkey printed omnis are like this. I don't know why they keep making them...
@@makzax cheaply produced for maximum profit. Turkish stuff is cheap for a reason...
Silver Surfer isn't a "big part of the Defenders." 🤣 Stan didn't want anyone else to use him so they dropped him pretty quick and he reappeared only rarely.
He was there at the start, but it is interesting to read about it from Thomas' perspective. :)
The spine is atrocious, I can't believe they'd botch that so badly. Binding looks mediocre, at best. Not happy to have pre-ordered this and have to "settle" for expensive books.
Binding will be poor, and the super thin pages 😢
Thanks Omar for the, as always, great review! I am really interested in these stories, but that new look of the spine really turns me off. The font is way too small for the size of the book, completely out of balance visually. I really hope that this is not the new design for all upcoming Silver Age books.
New Epic Collections from Marvel are great builded books, but they also have those thin see thruogh pages. I'm from Turkey and I wish I can access those guys and tell show this video and make sure they know about this problem.
tho I think the decision for the quality of paper is up to Marvel, not printer.
I’m a hulk graphic novel collector. Should this Omni go into my collection ?
Happy to see the book but that spine doesn't make sense. Where are my glasses?
As a general rule, I do not like all female books and visa versa male books. One two issues are fine. With Defenders, I'm torn as starting issue 4 Valkyrie shows up. I'm still not sure whether to buy it in that New Defenders I'd buy for sure.
I loathe that hate keeping by Stan Lee of Silver Surfer. He’s purely the idea of Kirby. Lee had no involvement with his creation. He was handed the pages of FF48 from Kirby and then fell in love.
Without Stab Lee Marvel would be nothing but this reminder has really angered me.
