at least in this case it looks like the mom is trying to get her to speak up for herself and she chooses not to. I've seen parents literally hover and speak for their child who are more than capable.

“I’m not calling the pharmacy for you. Either call to order your medicine or no medicine at all. And you will be grounded if your withdrawal symptoms cause you to be irritated with us” (i take antidepressants. I get withdrawal symptoms if I’m out of it for long enough)
Etc. now that I already have social anxiety, I panic a lot in fear but they’re being tough on me to try to get me over it.

Having you there helps her relax; idk why but those questions sound like a foreign language cause (my experience) seeing all the equipments and coats my mind starts racing thinking worst case senario; final Destination. So having my mom or dad or siblings eases and this video is literally how I acted lol 😂

This is relatable. my anxiety makes it hard to go to the doctors but at the same time I feel I can be more honest without a family member with me. Growing up though my mom tended to talk for me
Literally me when i go to my psychologist or psychiatrist. I stopped having my mom join me 2 years ago. Ive kinda over come the whole anxiety thing when going to see them. But i definitely did this since i was young.

That’s good though you can be honest with family present, because I literally used to lie when my mom was in the room and say I had to go to the bathroom and then tell the nurses the truth and ask them to tell my doctor

This is so true 😭, I can relate so much 🤣. When I was kid to 16 years old, when sick, my mom or dad that always accompanied me to the doctors, and they're the one that answer the doctors question. Till I'm 17, when I was sick and went to a doctor with my mom, when the doctor ask me, me and my mom just silent, I look at my mom to let her answer the doctor question, but my mom told me to answer it on my own 😭. It was the first time and I feel awkward, Idk why 🤣. Sorry for my broken English.

I’m 22 with social anxiety I have to go to all appointments with my mom because she’s my safe person. This is so relatable but if anyone else goes through this know you are loved and so so strong❤️
Shiann. Glad you got your Mom as your helper but hopefully you're working on talking for yourself. Do t use her as a crutch as your parents will not be in your life forever. Everyone struggles with dealing with strangers at medical appointments,school,work etc but if course some more than others. Continue working on it.

I know it's kids/teens who mainly watch this, but when you get older, it'll be YOU answering all the questions for your mom when she's old and you have to help with her doctors appointments.
*That doesn't apply to everybody because some people do not plan on taking care of their parents when they get older.... Especially if they are not close with them!!!*

This was my daughter. I wrote scripts for her to read when she had to make phone calls. She has 2 kids of her own now and she says it's still hard to talk to people but she's getting better at not avoiding it.

I do it to my mom all the time.
Social anxiety is hard. Mine doesn't manifest like this but for a lot of people talking with anyone who is professional or who has any type of authority is nearly impossible. For others it's being in a setting where people have expectations they feel they cannot meet is what causes it. The possibility for messing and the consequences are so high it's debilitating. For me it's working, not talking on the phone or going to appointments. I get so anxious I start vomiting, my blood pressure and heart rate sky rockets, my breathing increases, my thoughts race and turn very very dark, and I've passed and had seizures before. This is a reality for some people. For some it is worse than others.

Don’t worry love. I’m 28 too, and when I was 16 - 23 had crippling social anxiety. Watching this was uncanny 😂 but I somehow matured enough to live on the other side of the world on my own and no anxiety can stop me now!

I'm a doctor and I cannot emphasise enough how accurate this is
I once saw a patient, a 22 yrs old male at OPD. It was a first visit. I legitimately thought he was mute because mum told me he had a fever and sore throat for 2 days. She answered every single question and lastly I asked for the previous records for his medical conditions. She told me he hasn't any. I asked if he didn't go through investigations for a diagnosis for his disability and mom was shocked. Thank God she burst out laughing , lol.
The boy started talking immediately and I apologised too. Turns out he was shy and me being a female doctor didn't help either.

I used to act like Olivia's mom, but then realised that kids have to be able to answer the doctor's questions, so I let them answer by themselves. That helps them to be more independent.

I remember as a kid always giving my mom my order at restaurant so she could tell them what I wanted and to this day I'm still nervous about talking to people. Now I'm encouraging my own kid to answer questions for himself if it's something reasonable for a 5 year old to answer. Don't teach your kids that other people are scary and act like you're protecting them from the doctor, the waiter, the person at the cash register. It's really hard to adapt as an adult when you have no experience with these activities.
@@cocoanbella I’ve had my kids order since they were 4/5. Taught them to be polite with a please and thank you and to speak up. Kids will become adults and if they never learn it, it’s stressful.

Same 😆 I have my dad, mom or husband with me during most visits. If my chronic illness is flaring up or something else is going on, I might be loopy, forgetful or having panic attacks. It helps if there's another person there with their mental faculties intact, in case I have some trouble explaining things 😅

I had a really serious medical issue that required emergency surgery in my early twenties. I thank god my mother was able to drive me to the hospital, stay at my bedside until I was released and help me with self-care at home until I was strong enough to be independent again. Sometimes, no matter how old you are, you really do need your mom or dad there for you…

I was in the same situation, I had appendicits, which is when your appendix, an organ your body doesn't need on the side of your intestines ruptures, and you have to get it removed. It's basically the same situation as you. My mom was there, heck she carried to the hospital. But the only difference is that I'm eleven.

It’s great to have support, no matter the age you should always have someone with you to be your medical advocate and caregiver with surgery, but you can still work to speak for yourself and not like a parent or Dr. take over when you need to do your own research and make decisions for yourself, they are there to answer your questions give me the support you need not take over. Your situation was more of an emergency and no matter your age you probably would’ve needed someone to help you.
Yet, I took an almost 23 year old friend to get an application and she was so unironicly unprofessional, she kept saying things like “my mom” and “my mom told me you would give me a job.” 😬 She should simply know better and if she doesn’t she should watch videos on how to handle this stuff. She it’s a wonderful person with a lot to offer, but if she can’t be polite and speak for herself it’s not “others judging her wrong” it’s them being wise for their business. When you hire a person, you’re hiring work for yourself or help for yourself, figure out how to prove in an interview and a conversation and meeting someone that you’re going to be a help to them and not a hindrance or troublemaker and then when you get hired don’t be a troublemaker, hindrance, or so when you have to do all the thinking for which is how my friend put herself out there as. So be ready to act like someone that helps realizing that your the adult that makes that company better as you prove you can adult there. There’s nothing wrong with saying you heard about the job from your mother _____ (insert her actual name and the description of the event) and turn it back to you. “…and when she told me about your opening, I realized I really would enjoy working here I wanted to make sure I connected with you.” And then turn it back to respecting them. “What positions are you still looking to hire for?” That’s completely different from walking up to a counter and demanding an application from random workers saying my mommy told me you would hire me. 🤦🏽♀️ They are thinking, “Not anymore!”

I just turned 18 a few months ago, the very next day my mom left me at the eye doctor on my own. I went through the whole process by myself, but the funniest part was when they kept asking if my mom was around. They were shocked when I filled out all my paperwork on my own, and asked the doctor questions about which lenses would benefit me and the costs.🤣🤣🤣

As an Introvert ,also Anti-Social. I speak at the doctor's and when it's needed, I am glad I'm not like this.
This is why I make a symptoms and meds/diet journal so I can just give it to them and not speak cause.... I can't remember alot of things over time I used to bottle it all up.

My friend's mom couldn't go to the doctor with her and she has a lot of anxiety. She was 21, i was 23 and had to talk for her during the appointment. The doctor understood immediately and started talking to me after a bit without questions. He was great.
Anxiety is a very real and sometimes very debilitating issue. Many people do not understand until they have seen someone deal with it every single day and the consequences they have to face because of it. No one would ever willingly miss out on so much life has to offer to fake an anxiety disorder and have such horrible symptoms that come with it.
If you've ever seen a panic attack then you'll know how awful anxiety is. I literally think I'm going to die until I realize what's going on and can pull myself out of it. They are scary to go through and scary to watch.

Similar for me I had just never felt like I was allowed to have a voice of my own since my guardian would never give me a chance to talk before she'd start talking over me, which just kinda taught me from a young age to not be used to getting to speak for myself since it was so rare I ever got the chance. Whenever she left the room I was suddenly allowed to talk I'd have trouble shutting up cause I was so desperate to get to talk finally.

Pagan Phoenix Ab emotional support person should be there for support if you need it not to speak for you n cripple you further by relieving you of temporary small anxiety and replacing it with long term anxiety n dependence on others for nearly everything. While I suspect there are so e benefits to this more compassionate view of peoples conditions,you have to wonder why people didn't have so much crippling anxiety in the past. 10 yrs ago or 50 yrs ago. Is it possible they just had to get over it . Harsh as that may sound. Constantly having safe places,safe people,safe conversations prevents people from maturing neat I g to deal with life in life's terms. What are these social workers n therapists helping people with. This should not be insurmountable except for very severe n rare cases yet it almost seems like an epidemic.

Same, even in school meetings I need her. I remember orientation day for my college, we had to separate from our parents and I was just like “What do you mean I can’t have my mom come with me?”
Oh, you got me on this!! My little one does this! So spot on! But you got me on the end--I've worked with too many adults who have to leave work early for their adult children, having me take care of extra patients. I wonder who will take care of these adult children once their parents pass away. There's meds, counseling, programs, and volunteering, as well as a plethora of self help books. There's too much to do in the world and too many people and animals to help to be self absorbed in anxiety--I know--I had terrible social anxiety for years, but decided to put others first, and I got over the worst.

My brother is 26 and is the same way. I accompany him to the doctors now as my grandmother is getting older. He has severe social anxiety and just shuts down. Our PCP has a list of questions and we fill them out together at home so when we go in I have all the answers. He just sits there and tries to look as small as possible but he is 6,3 and build like a line backer.

This is so accurate. 😂 I took my son to the doctor a couple of times at nineteen and had to answer most of the questions for him. It really threw the doctors and nurses off because they thought I was his sister or girlfriend and just really controlling I guess.

I suppose I could have sat down and gone over his medical history before the appointment, but I am more of a "learn on the job" and "lead by example" type. Everything is a learning experience, and now he has more knowledge for next time. ✌️
