I don't own a Garmin and I don't have SRAM, but it's GPLama so it is required viewing.
🙌 thanks Shane. I asked a recent question on this after watching your SRAM Blip vid. Just the info I needed..just got to work out where I can mount those things cleanly!
GPLama aka Cycling Tech Jesus
Awesome guide !
o! I got an idea for a feature! On the climb, you must hold both buttons pressed all the time. You let it go, it means you passed out and need ambulance! :D :D
Deadman switch
I have a 1030+, which was not that cheap at that time. The fact that Garmin does not support the buttons with these "old" units is the last drop. No more Edge for me. It's a waste of money after a way too short span.
The goodwill that they could have created among Garmin users looking to upgrade in the near future by updating older units is totally lost on them (or ignored by them), total morons.
It’s really ridiculous and annoying for Garmin to not support this feature, as it is a software update, on the 830 or 1030. These units aren’t cheap and perhaps Garmin should give consumers the ability to upgrade their devices even if it’s a small nominal fee. I’m done purchasing Garmin devices just to be able to take advantage of a new software feature. COME ON GARMIN!
BTW. Great review as always! You’re one of the best! Keep up the good work
I feel you. Just wanna say that after "not-so-good-either" experience with Wahoo my new rule of thum: no expensive/top line bike computers again. It's just not worth the money and nerves :D Cheers!
I bought a 530 mtb bundle a few years ago. Came with a remote. I now strapped it onto road bike bars and use this. I can mark laps etc but I just use it to scroll through pages. I have force axs without buttons but use this instead. Easy peasy for less money and faff
Lol just use bike computer for metrics, no need for another phone screen in front of you. Got 530 for 150 uros used, still great after 4 years.
Got this set up and working with blips. Works well enough, but man it's hard to get them in to a good position and wrapped cleanly.
I was waiting for this upgrade for ages, but the fact that you have to choose for your BLIPS between SHIFT or CHANGING PAGE is a shame, I hope Sram will upgrade this very soon. I don't want to spend another 100€ on a pair of new Blips (not even sure where I could place them on my handlebar !) Thanks for the video anyway
Nice video...
I feel validated after seeing that you also wrap the flat part of the handlebars.
*Not my bike. I think they wrapped them like this to keep the wireless Blips in place on the underside.
I'll use that as an excuse next time the handlebar tape police stops me. I'm still on Shimano mechanical tho.
Greetings Shane. Fun video...and yes a Wahoo video would be great.
I was practically gifted a Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2... I have been wavering on switching to the (now) discounted Edge 1040 so I can use the Garmin training ecosystem seemlessly. Wahoo just works...and seeing all the comments about orphaned 1030s, I am thinking the next gen Garmin flagship will incorporate features that won't trickle down to the 1040.
First world issues: deciding which flagship head unit to use on costly bicycles for fitness metrics for a 67 year old enthusiast. 😂🚴♂️🤯🤣🤠
I got really excited when this dropped, thinking I could set dual press on my gravel bike AXS Rival levers to page turn on my garmin (the buttons on the 840 are squishy and really hard to press on bumpy gravel, and the touch screen doesn’t always work right with my gloves) - I have a 1x so it’s completely wasted on my gear shifting. I was pretty bummed this can’t be done.
Likewise, I never use the long press on my AXS 1x mountain bike, so I thought I could keep short press to shifting, long press to jump through pages. No dice on that, either… Big missed opportunity for my bikes at least. Unless I did something wrong, but watching through this, I think I did it all right. Maybe this will come someday. I don’t want to add blips, I already have unused controls that should be able to do what I want.
Dude.. same setup and totally agree! Such a shame!
Same setup here as well, hopefully there will be an update available soon, otherwise... Well, I've lived until now with mechanical groupsets, I guess it won't be a huge problem
Any update? I'm getting 1x Rival AXS groupset and was thinking about the same use case for "front derailleur" controls...
I don't see any firmware updates for my components, and this has to change on SRAM's side from my understanding, so no luck from what I can tell.
Campagnolo EPS has had this for at least 5 or 6 years. I use it all the time and have on my 1000, 1030 and 1040.
crazy timing on this. Just bought New SRAM bike with Garmin.
I know. I was hiding outside watching. 👀
@@gplama lol. Well I appreciate it. Great video as always!!
Please ask Garmin/Strava if strava live segments will finallly work in Garmin Edge units while folowing a route.
Huh. I thought there was just something wrong with my setup.
Plus disabling that Virtual Partner completeley (NO icon and NO message at the end of a ride), and sending a route to the unit after you started a ride. These things feels so like 1990.
@@ralfmimoun2826 I'm genuinely sick of my 840. I'm holding out for a new wahoo or it's over to Karoo.
Can you also show how trimming is working on Edge units with AXS and DI2?
good and useful video, what manufacturer is the steering wheel I saw in the video?
Those are the new Zipp road bars.
Awesome stuff! From what I can gather online, those helpful “Chainring shift next” notifications I get with Di2 in synchro shift mode on my Garmin don’t work on SRAM. Is that still the case with this updated firmware and the E1 release? I really dig that feature.
They do seem to be missing overshift / next-shift in sync mode beeps with SRAM AXS. Something I assumed was there. One for Garmin to add for sure.
@@gplama Thanks for confirming. I’d love to see them add this. I wonder if it’s part of the standard ANT+ spec for gearing or if it’s part of Shimano’s private implementation and we’ll just never see it.
Apex is a no go with blips and head unit control?
Just upgraded both my cyclocross and mountain bike to AXS. I thought it was a bit of a shame I can't assign ANT+ control to combo action of the shift lever and dropper post lever (that could make at least for two function controls even if only short press was allowed), but then I found out my still working well Edge 530 is not compatible anyway…
Does the blip transmit or does the rear derailleur? Can I configure the blips via axs then move the blips to a non axs bike?
Rear derailleur.
Any news on redesigned blips? I love the functionality of these but they're an awful shape and almost impossible to tape around and then you've flat top aero bars? Surely there must be an improvement on the way?
A redesign would be nice. They’re a little too chunky to nearly mount.
Can you convince Wahoo to add a "back screen" function at all Shane? Scrolling through data screens in a loop is a terrible user experience and reduces the value of bilps / hidden buttons
It’d be useful. I don’t think they’ll change this after so many years though.
Hi. What is the lag like vs di2? I find it a bit slow to change the page with Shimano r8070
It's about the same. It's not as quick as hitting the buttons on the computer directly.
Thanks to this I may be getting some blips for the control of my 530. Always wished for an easier way to get to the map screen.
@@sabrowenie he said no xx30 series at the moment
What about the important stuff like next song, pause song? :) Anyone know of an inexpensive micro switch on a barrel plug that can fit into the ports on old and inferior levers so I can put buttons under the hood covers? The SRAM solution is bulky and costly vs low tech always off micro switches
Please garmin, give me music control from the extra buttons. and had this been a standard implementation when eTap first came out i may have actually stuck with it.
I have 1040 running 21.17 SW, updated my AXS RED to 2.48.2 and under shifting sensors I do not have "ANT+ Function setup" Am I missing something?
Two things I can think of - Are all AXS components updated? Delete the AXS sensor and re-add it.
@@gplama That was it! Thank you! As soon as I re-added it, it popped up on the screen as an option on the Garmin without even going into the sensor menu.
Which handle bar are you using?
I was about to ask the same thing.
This bike has the new Zipp SL 80 Race bars.
I’m confused…with wireless blips, is it shift function and Garmin control or only one or the other? With the buttons being short press only really limits my usability for my 1x setup.
Each wireless blip can be one or the other. With the dual-press also being one or the other.
@@gplama that’s what I was thinking, thanks for setting me straight. Should be an easy firmware bump to add the long press functionality 😬🤞
@@chriskennedy1076 I would guess that the blip hardware is not capable of sending a long press signal. In other words, you press the switch and it sends a signal. It doesn't matter if you keep holding the button to try and do a long press - the signal (blip) has already been sent. You have to release the switch before it will send another (short) signal. That's my guess anyway. I bet they do it to save battery life.
Would be nice from Sram to do the same for Wahoo Bolt
See 9:40 in the video.
What about the wired blibs?
I assume the same function as wired clics. I don’t have any to test.
SRAM remember:you got my money, when Garmin relase update to edge 530
This will be the last proper update for the x40's if the rumours about the 1050 are true - anything you'd like to share with us? 😉
There’s going to be a LOT of angry people if they sunset the x40 this soon. People with the 1030 Plus are still freshly burnt.
@@gplama Apple supports 7 generations of device with iOS17, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect Garmin to support at least two. The goodwill created would more than pay for itself in return customers.
sound is only coming from the right :/
Check your headphones. 🎧
I almost want to switch back to Garmin. Wahoo doesn't seem to do enough with updates or new features. A new solar unit would be great too. One can only wish 😞
It’s already integrated since the 15th May release. As well as GoPro control. Wahoo is way ahead.
I don't know about them being "way ahead", but Ill have to check for an update. I haven't ridden in about 2 months due to a broken foot.
@@LouieBaLLzthat’s your problem stop crying
sorry 😅
All good! I've got you covered! :)
