    Fun fact: Molly Sandén (Swedish) did the vocals in the Eurovision movie but in places they were mixed with the vocals of Rachel McAdams. However, in the Húsavik song it’s all purely Molly. So, Molly was supposed to sing this at the Oscars but wasn’t admitted into the US (no work visa) & therefore they decided to go to Húsavik - the town where the movie is set & the name of this song - on Iceland to perform this song. It was pre-recorded (the kids & the musicians didn’t peform live) like all the other Oscars performances but Molly’s vocals are 100% live.
    She is a magical artist with emotion like no other! A few of her songs:

    I think the diphthongs and the switching between and chest and head voice is very common in our folk music here in Sweden and Iceland (and other countries around here). That's probably why she's singing like that. The folk vibe fits perfectly since she's singing about Husavik and the Icelandic nature.

    The crescendo in the last note, before the run, causes her natural vibrato to fall out in a really beautiful way. It's like saying "oh, you thought I was done...I got something extra for you." When you expect it to just be a fade out, she pushes. I think I like it, but I'd have to hear it the other way to be sure.

    Like a million people have already mentions Molly Sandén is a Swedish artist.
    But I’m guessing she was chosen exactly for the reason that the Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Iceland are closely related and have a lot in common.
    Molly Sandén is probably among the biggest pop artists in Sweden, she is pretty pure Swedish pop, and have been so for a long time. She got her break really young, and her whole thing her whole career have been that she is such a great singer, with really impressive vocals.
    She also grown to become a really quite impressive song writer, and mostly sings in Swedish.
    It’s interesting to see you mention vocal techniques and make associations to things like American country music, while to me it just something that is something I’m very used to from Swedish pop and Swedish musical theatre.
    And like others have mentioned, the Disney note was pretty spot on, as she was I believe both the voice actor and vocalist for the songs for Rapunzel in the Swedish dub of Tangled.

      @jez76 Год назад

      Think it was Will Ferrells decision.
      He spends a lot of summers in Sweden (swedish wife) and probably knew about her.
      And yeah, doubt anyone outside the nordics could’ve done the icelandic parts.
      I’d say 99% of the world can’t do the “u” in Husavik.
      Funny enough, in this version Molly does the “international” Hooo-sa-week, while the original recording has the Scandinavian or Swedish “u” (hew).

    • @birchleaf
      @birchleaf Год назад

      @@rexuz2482pends…. true, geographically it’s not, but Icelandic is a Scandinavian language, and because Iceland was populated by Norwegians and for a long time was under Danish rule, they have strong cultural ties to Scandinavia. It is more correct to refer to it as a Nordic country, but people confuse Scandinavian and Nordic all the time.

    A diphthong is made up of TWO vowels who glide from one to the other (from narrow or wide doesnt matter) without making another syllable (so two vowels gliding in one syllable). "Home" and "Town" or words that only have diphthong vowels, she didnt make them a diphthong, the words just have diphtongs (Home: H(uh)->om, Town: Ta->un). What she did do is that she changed which vowel sound was being held for longer, instead of H(uuuh)->om Taaa->un, she went H(uh)->oooom Taaa->un (notice how she didn't change Town). BUT that's not entirely the end of it, she actually changes them to two monophthongs, so she does the opposite of making a diphthong. instead of having TWO vowels for ONE syllable, she had TWO vowels for TWO syllables. A good way to understand this is to tap to the "beat" of the words, that should line up with the syllables. So try saying Home Town normally and clap/tap to the "beat": Home 👏 Town 👏 (Meme 👏 re-view 👏👏 (Mím re-vyu)) and then to how she sings it: Huh👏-om👏 Town👏. Very common in singing to make words fit the melody and rhythm, breaking up diphtongs and using the same vowel for more syllables (like the riff she does at the end (sometimes even reversing the diphthong and restarting it: (Home) Huh👏uh👏uh👏o👏o👏uh👏om (changing the notes without a steady glide between the notes creates a new syllable))). In Swedish we don't have diphthongs in our standard dialect in our native words, but we have the swear "fan" which is usually pronounced fah-ahn (with emphasis on BOTH ah-sounds), TWO syllables, but can be pronounced quickly, fan (fahn).
    So to summarize it, a diphthong is made up of two vowel sounds (smoothly) gliding from one to the other which doesn't create two syllables, and only creates ONE. However if two vowels don't glide or BOTH are emphasized like thw word "create" which has two syllables Cre-ate and "ate" does have a diphthong eh to ee, so in total THREE vowel sounds in a row but only TWO syllables (Krí-(eh->ee)t).
    Did anybody ask? No, did it take me like 30 minuites to write this? Yes. Am i happy about? Yes and no. Am i overly obsessed with linguistics? Why yes how did you know?
    Okej 👏👏 hejdå 👏👏!

    Please acknowledge that you as a vocal coach, have learned what Eurovision is by now :) Celine Dion won it for another country back in the day. I'm Canadian, we aren't even a part of it, but man...

    If I remember this correctly, Molly did this performance live, during the Oscar’s?!? So the control of voice AND nerves are pretty amazing, besides sitting in a warm and cozy, re-take-youtube-studio…. :p

    This is the big problem with Internet and the RUclips reaction videos. Molly Sandén did an amazing job and that end note in the chilly weather is fantastic. But of course someone on the Internet must say that they love the end note but always have a little small complaint and that takes away all the feels to the whole thing. 🥺💖💖💖

    You should do a part 2 where you react to all of the Sandén sisters ;) They're all amaaazing singers. Mimmi won Swedens got talent (which is called Talang), Frida "Lilla Melodifestivalen" which is Melodifestivalen but for kids (where they decide who represents Sweden in junior Eurovision) and then there's Molly.

      Mimmi did not win Talang. The winner that year was Jon Henrik Fjällgren.

    Most of these critiques are just personal preference. Its interesting to hear your take of what Molly is doing but when you listen to the caliber of singer that she is it really doesn't matter what we think. Just sit back and enjoy the music. This is one performance out of many and there are a million ways to sing a song. I would like to hear what you can do with this song.
