Also Ironically Iceland probably would have actually won Eurovision for real if it had happened!! Dadi Freyr giving in to peer pressure and doing a version of ja ja ding dong was one of my fav things last year.
If you compare the two recordings her voice is is a lot smoother and less raw then in the version from the movie. This makes me think that in the film they mixed Rachel McAdams' voice with hers to create an ABBA-like hybrid sound that is a little rougher around the edges. Molly and Rachel actually have similar voices so this would be possible to do. That also explains why Molly is credited under her "My Marianne" middle name in the film rather than under her first and last name. I would love to hear more about where Rachel's voice was used and where Molly's voice was.

This song seriously brought me to tears.. when she started singing in Icelandic, I don't even know what she was saying, but it moved something in me. Thank you
This has to be the most humble heart warming performance of all of these nominations. These little children singing in their town of husavik a small town and they are all probably excited to be at the oscars. That would melt anyone’s heart.
Yeah, and you can really tell how proud and happy they are when Molly turns to them when they sing the chorus together with her. The smiles on their faces in that moment is just the cutest thing ever!
You know, the ironic part is, this song was featured in a movie about a music competition where this small town all of a sudden filled all of Iceland with pride... sadly the song didn't win the price but it won everyone's hearts. The song then gets nominated for a real life award where the very much real town gets to be in the spotlight for real. I imagine a lot of Icelandic tuning in for the award ceremony. Sadly it didn't win the Oscars, but the performance sure did win our hearts yet again.
Commenting a third time on this video, because this performance is just SO DAMN STUNNING. HOW IN THE HELL DID THE OSCARS PUT THIS ON THEIR PRESHOW? If this was any American artist, it would never stop being shown as a highlight, as one of the greatest Oscar performances of ALL TIME.
Would it be because it was being performed live though? The time that the main show is live in America, it would be the 3am or 4am in Iceland. Obviously they could have just recorded it and played the performance during the main show. Great song and an incredible performance
1:39 this shot of the girls is incredible. It's the first time the singer turns back and looks at them, and they are just beaming back at her. I hope she saw that, that was so cute.
I know. Their beaming faces are just the most beautiful thing ever. And I also love it when Molly turns back after looking at them at 2:00 and you can see the little tear in her right eye
The song from a movie about Eurovision that is actually deeper and more sincere than the majority of real Eurovision songs. EDIT: Whoa, thanks for the likes, I guess I'm not the only one that thinks like this.
Exactly! The way the Russia guy cannot be himself in his home country because he is gay is so sad but sadly true. I’m no Eurovision fan but I liked the movie.
Eurovision was once all about nonstop ballads that were sincere and deep and it was boring and tiring by the end. It still has songs like that and they've won a few years (2016, 2017, 2019, just recently!) but it's not a weakness that many are just fun. It's better entertainment by being variety.
@@occono3543 Eurovision is the most random song consuete ever. From songs from the Crimean genocide to a chicken song of female empowerment and an Italian rock song! I am once again commenting on this video to express my sheer wonder and love for this song and performance. Molly Sanden, the visuals, the young ladies singing, the Aurora, the instrumentalists, the fireworks; it's all just absolutely stunning in every way. And it still stuns/disappoints me to realize that the Oscars relegated this to a preshow. If Lady Gaga or some mainstream American artist had composed this song, they would have put this performance in the highest viewership segment of the show, replayed it a dozen times, and would probably still be talking about it two years later.
@@victoriabennage2190 Its more than that... she has the very rare ability to emote in her phrasing. This is what separates good singers from great singers. Good singers can have perfect pitch and hit every note, but without the ability to emote, it won't "grab the audience by the feels". Take for example "How Do I Live Without You" recorded by both LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood. Rimes sang in perfect pitch, hit every note. But when compared to Trisha's, it feels bereft of emotion.
Molly Sandén has been famous I Sweden (where she is from) for being a especially strong vocalist, since she was quite young. Extremely talented. She sings in a way that is very popular in a certain type of Swedish pop. Imagine if you had classically trained singers, maybe a bit of musical theatre too, that is pop. But in a lot of ways is quite similar to this song. But I also think Swedish singers have a bit of a free advantage, that Swedish is very suited for singing. Many singers need to work a lot of adjusting their vowel sounds while singing, so they become ones that are more easy to sing. So when speaking and singing the same word, you would need to make different vowel sounds, or you are going to have a very hard time singing. (This is also the reason why even in languages that have a lot of different accents within it. It’s almost always sang the same way, with a few exceptions) But in Swedish this isn’t the case. You can just use the sounds that you are used to using when speaking Swedish and it works great. Most of the Swedish vocal sounds are extremely similar to the sounds that researchers found are the easiest to sing. Where you have a easier time holding a note longer, keep the pitch and without tensing up. And Swedish also is also spoken with a lot of melody compared to most languages. So you use the melody of the sentence to convey what you mean more or less always more then the actual words you use. Norwegian would probably be among the most extreme in the world in its use of melody to convey emotion and intention. English is on the other side of the spectrum, and is spoken extremely monotone, little melody, few pauses or emphasis. And when I speak English because I can’t use melody when speaking, it feels like I lose most of my personality while I’m speaking. It’s to a much higher degree conveyed by what I say then how. Obviously you can still do it in English. But there are a lot less ‘tools’ available. So many Swedish singers also get a little free head start in finding how to convey emotion while singing.
I was born and grew up in Indonesia but moved to Scandinavia 7 years ago - been living in both Norway & Sweden … this song has been touching my heart …. Where the mountain sing, seagulls and northern light … i am proud to call it now - My home ❄️🌌

People say that the other Best Song nominees have "social value" because they touched on social issues. But Husavik is a simple, but beautiful song that just touches your heart. I'd choose this song over the others.
Social values are important and I am not taking away from the winners at all, but this song is also about social values: about the challenges that people face in a globalised world, where some feel that they have to leave their home to pursue a career and they realise that they want to be back home. It speaks to global and regional equality and inclusion, its a call to say that we can't be a society focused just on cosmopolitans. And given the challenges that democracy faces from those that feel ignored beyond these cosmopolitan entities, the message that this song delivers is a strong social message too.
I'm 17, Irish and went to Reykjavik in Iceland over Easter on a school trip and it was so beautiful. Also Molly's outfit reminds me of the Northern Lights. So stunning
Watched this movie with my mother in law. I couldn't hold back tears when this song came on, something about it is moving and powerful. I think it brought be me back to simpler times, when people had love for one another and not disdain. Small towns seem to hold onto the comradery that cites lose. One day, maybe we'll be able to find our own "Husavik".
Molly Sandén is worth gold and diamonds no matter she was robbed in JESC, Melfest and Oscars. She will have that outstanding voice for life and my unconditional love forever.
Greatest, most spine tingling Oscars musical moment since Celine Dion in 1998. Incredible performance and I hope this makes this vocalist a huge global star.
This song was written and performed in a way to capture the feeling of the movie, yet it managed to capture the hearts of the Eurovision fans. It couldn’t be done better because it exceeded the creators' and the producers' expectations. It should have won an Oscar.
She nailed this performance. Although I agree this should have won by a landslide, Husavik and Molly are still huge winners tonight. Congrats on an amazing song and an amazing voice from an amazing place.
Here I am just singing about northern lights even when we don't have that here in the Philippines. 😂 Wherever we're from, I think HUSAVIK is our hometown.
Fantastic performance! The last seconds when the camera zooms out and the fireworks fade out, you see the snowclad mountains in the background with a hint of aurora borealis. Magic!
I can't believe she actually hits that note in the end. In the movie, it's obviously a production/computer generated so I didn't think anyone would ever actually sing it yet she does and with so much power too. Absolutely unbelievable.
I am an Icelander living abroad and my hometown is next to this town. I wasn't expecting seeing this and all my lovely sisters. So I didn't stand a chance.
I wish everybody would understand how Molly help the kids during the song with things like their timing, daring to sing out and make it fun to do, which is revealed by the kids smiles when they look at each other. Those little smiles makes the song even better and makes Molly even more beautiful. All the involved made this performance magical, they do it like the rest of this world should do everything. They do it together. ❤️
I've watched and listened to this more times than i care to count. Everytime, it brings me to tears...It should have been Number one at the Oscars ,not the Pre -show.

She deserved the Oscar, but this just goes to show how dumb they are. She's a winner in my books. This song and her voice are incredible!
Technically she wouldn’t have gotten an Oscar even if the song won since she wasn’t a part of the songwriting
It’s a pity Molly didn’t get the Oscar, though H.E.R. deserved hers.
That last shot, it really looks like something straight outta Disney
This song seriously brought me to tears.. when she started singing in Icelandic, I don't even know what she was saying, but it moved something in me. Thank you
This has to be the most humble heart warming performance of all of these nominations. These little children singing in their town of husavik a small town and they are all probably excited to be at the oscars. That would melt anyone’s heart.
Yeah, and you can really tell how proud and happy they are when Molly turns to them when they sing the chorus together with her.
The smiles on their faces in that moment is just the cutest thing ever!
It was really touching and adorable
My favourite part of the whole video!
@@gillianfowler5764 Mine too, and I cry every time!
I know. Their beaming faces are just the most beautiful thing ever. And I also love it when Molly turns back after looking at them at 2:00 and you can see the little tear in her right eye
It's so damn cute that it's almost too much! Those smiles ❤
@@bettinastewart5198 I'm a grown man watching that on repeat fully crying haha Simply beautiful.
The song from a movie about Eurovision that is actually deeper and more sincere than the majority of real Eurovision songs.
EDIT: Whoa, thanks for the likes, I guess I'm not the only one that thinks like this.
... and of real Oscar songs.
Unfortunately there are politics such as voting for neighbours or groups such as balkans or ex-soviet. There are some really good songs though and that’s why I love it.
I'm sorry I break out the 666 likes :(
Lars Erickksong line from the movie was never more true than after this beautiful performance: "The perfect song isn’t the winning song, but a song that comes from the heart” She may not have gotten the award but she walked away a winner! This was absolute perfection!
"The best song is not the winning song but the one that comes from the heart"

She's singing in Icelandic!
Molly done such a great job here.
I don't know how the Oscar can go to anyone other than Molly, Husavik and the songwriters.

@@luismenezes8261 well Molly is from Sweden so why would she sing if they won?
This song and the images of Husavik made me ball my eyes out....I was standing exactly where she was 2 summers ago....eating fresh cod on the wharf and staying that the Husvik hotel, just to the left of the screen...i have so many fond memories of Husavik and my travels of the entire country of Iceland. Iceland changed me....and it will always be a part of me.
Imagine singing about the Aurora Borealis... and the actual Aurora Borealis is freakin' literally in the background.
I thought you were kidding.😱surreal
they lit up for her in appreciation
Which surprised me because I didn’t think any part of Iceland was inside the Arctic Circle
@@terrybaker8156 I mean you can see the Northern lights outside of the arctic circle as well it's just not as common, I live in the south of Sweden and I've seen them a couple of times here. Amazing!
It wasn’t, that was a very overcast and windy night across Iceland.
This performance is so jaw-droppingly beautiful. The singing, the atmosphere, the northern lights, her dress matching the sky. This should have won!
Her voice is insane. I'm not a musician, but it felt... so clear? So clean. Don't know how to describe it. Obviously it's very powerful.
It's almost as though she has perfect pitch
@@victoriabennage2190 Its more than that... she has the very rare ability to emote in her phrasing. This is what separates good singers from great singers. Good singers can have perfect pitch and hit every note, but without the ability to emote, it won't "grab the audience by the feels". Take for example "How Do I Live Without You" recorded by both LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood. Rimes sang in perfect pitch, hit every note. But when compared to Trisha's, it feels bereft of emotion.
It's called Speorg note
@@johnpauljones9310 ...but still she was told that she couldn't make it in the US because of her looks 🤷🏻♀️
It’s almost always sang the same way, with a few exceptions)
But in Swedish this isn’t the case.
I live in Sweden ( Im a refugee ) This feels my heart with love for my new home! 🇸🇪🥺

It's absolutely a fraud that this song did not win an Oscar compared to the actual winner. Gross how selective this society has gotten.
It’s SO satisfying when artists that sings huge movie songs like this that we fall in love it sings it just as good live
People say that the other Best Song nominees have "social value" because they touched on social issues. But Husavik is a simple, but beautiful song that just touches your heart. I'd choose this song over the others.
I can't believe it didn't win :(
But during confiment ñast year this song and the movie brought some much joy!!!
