    When replacing metal screws into plastic, turn the screw backwards with very slight pressure until it clicks or you feel a bump. This will align the existing threads and not create new ones which will eventually strip the hole.

    This was useful for my 407 as well. I was able to find that the small internal o-ring for the plunger shaft
    had broken. I should have lubricated the plunger shaft sooner. For now, I've just plugged the shaft and am running without a plunger. Thanks!

      With what did you plug the shaft? I just found that I'm in the same predicament as you were with that internal small o ring being found broken into pieces

    Hello Brandon,
    I wanted to thank you for posting this very informative
    video. Individuals like I, who invest on these Fluval canisters spend the extra
    money for better performing filters. Maintenance is very important when it
    comes to protecting your investment and I think your video does an excellent
    explaining how to go about the proper maintenance of these Fluval canisters.
    I have a Fluval 106 canister myself, and I was experiencing
    trouble with the aquaststop valve. Every time I would try to lock into to place
    the whole valve would pop out. I decided to clean the entire canister out in
    hopes of solving this issue. Your video helped me clean out every component
    within the canister. As I was placing silicone oil on the gaskets, I noticed
    that the aquastop valve has two gaskets itself (one for the inlet and outlet
    valves). They were very hard/brittle and I honestly think this is the reason
    why the valve would not close appropriately. Perhaps you can make a note of it
    in your next video, for others who may be experiencing the same problem.
    Thanks again for posting such a detailed video,
    John Chamorro

      +John Chamorro thank you for your comment. very happy the video helped! the aquastop valve can be your best friend or worst enemy very quickly. lol. probably soon i will do another rebuild video on them, as well as the g3. thanks again. B

      Push down on the gray clips you unsnapped. The pump lifts right off. No need to fight it by pulling on it and it doesn’t stress the o-ring. HTH

    Brandon - Thanks so much for the video. My pump was getting kind of week - turns out it was just loaded up with aquarium filth! But your video helped me rebuild my pump with the rebuild kit I got. It works great now. I tried to get it going with the filter empty but I had lost the siphon so I just filled the filter with water and it worked great. Thanks again. PS - the first rebuild kit I got from Amazon came with a broken impeller. Amazon did take it back and gave me my money back. The second one arrived fine.

    You made me lol.
    I have had several of these for years. Great filters. The impeller covers are the most common problem I run into. All of mine use the clear one. One of the ears breaks and wont hold the cover secure. If you install it and leave it it is ok. But if you try to remove it, it is guaranteed to break. Occasionally have a leak. Have never greased the o ring though.
    Thank you for sharing the video

  • @flatback09

    I was specifically looking for how to remove the inside cover and there you were. Thanks.
    My 405 is about 10yrs old and without some tough love, the top leaks like a sieve. The hard and dirty fix is to apply a liberal amount of grease onto the inside of the canister where the lid seal fits. There's a concave depression all the way around Not so much that it squeezes out but pretty close.
    Another little tip. If you also apply a thin coat of grease to the impeller shaft (the broken 'stick' in your vid), the pump goes from quiet to silent.
    I also hard plumbed my pump with rigid pipes to accommodate a radial flow filter. We inherited 5 turtles and they create a ton of waste that was plugging up my poor little pump in 3-4 days . Now, about once a month and no more smells.
    Thanks again

    Thank the lord for this video. I actually just bought a fluval 305 off ebay. After trying to get it to pump the water out( it was only doing it when I pumped the primer) I finally took apart the impeller and discovered the ceramic dowel is broken. Thankfully I have a broken 205 sitting around that I pulled the dowel out of now if I can just get it back into the new one without breaking it...

      The AquaStop fittings for the Fluval 04, 05 and 06 filters tend to warp over time, and become impossible to refit after a filter cleaning. You should keep a spare AquaStop around just in case this occurs, because eventually all AquaStop fittings will warp.
      You can purchase kits for these filters which include impeller assemblies, gaskets and other parts. They do tend to be on the expensive side though.
      The best thing to do if possible is to purchase an entire filter as a spare since you get all of the spare parts you need for much less than if you were to purchase these parts separately.
      I waited until the Fluval 305 was discontinued and then purchased a pair of them NOS. I paid about $110 each including shipping. And now I have an entire spare filter for a lot less than what I would have spent to purchase all of the parts to build a new 305.
      Just some food for thought the next time you find that you need to replace a part on your filter.

    Nice cat. I think I saw it in a video about cleaning the filter sponges in the bathtub.
    I have the Fluval 306. Fluval's manual is very poor. In particular, it does not show where that long rubber gasket goes. I had to guess, and it was wrong and lots of water was sucked out of the aquarium. The gasket was damaged. Fortunately, I live near the U.K. Fluval distributor, and the nice lady there installed a new gasket for me without charge.
    The Fluval manual also does not tell you how to get the filter to prime after a cleanout. This can be impossible unless you watch the RUclips video that deals with this. It is so easy, too.
    Also, the Fluval company sells several chemicals in bags (e.g. ammonia remover) to go inside the filter. These will guarantee that your aquarium will never "cycle"; you will have a permanent ammonia problem. That is very irresponsible of Fluval. An aquarium store employee straightened me out on that: only have sponges and "biomax" (porous ceramic pellets) inside the filter. Problem solved. No more ammonia.
    Thanks for the video. It will come in handy one day.

    My ceramic plunger is broken too. I have to get the water out for the fish badly: can I run it long enough to pull the water out? I am also curious what to do when you have a pin in the hole that is next to the propeller bay. Not the little yellow one, but the one that is on the edge raised from there. I have an old model Fluval 206 cannister filter - over 15 years old - have noticed the water output has dropped l do regular clean it. l have noticed you push & pierce the plastic holding clips with a small srew driver to remove the bottom section of the motor
    area.l note in my 206 there don't seems to b a hole on the plastic clip for the srew driver to enter - l think its sealed.

    I lost one of the small plastic pins during cleaning. As best as I can tell you can't order replacements (or at least I didn't find any). I did find that you can make your own out of weed trimmer line that is the correct diameter. I think the pins are around 0.115 inches in diameter which is on the large side for trimmer line. I actually found that 0.105 line worked well for me and was a snug fit. Just trim a section to match length of a good pin.

      My 407 was sucking air around the base of the Aquastop valves. (I dripped some water ontop and watched it get sucked in). There looked like a place I could add an extra o-ring to both inlet and outlet, so I did. Suppose I could have just replaced the standard o-rings, but now it sits more snuggly too.

    Brandon, just watched your video on the Fluval rebuild, very nice job. Out of unplanned necessity, I must ask if you have any knowledge on the aqua stops. My 405 started leaking when I disconnected it for a media change. A fine spray of water was coming out the right side, and also saw water seepage possibly from center or left side. Can't find any videos on these aqua stops to show repairs or replacement of parts. Do you have anything up your sleeve to shed some light on my dilemma? Thx.

    I took the whole motorhead apart greased and reassembled it but the filter pours out on the sides when I put the red lever down. I can see that the seal is not tight enough. I'm not sure if I should add a second gasket or if there is something else I am missing. Great video by the way,

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  8 лет назад

      +Kathleen Bouchard just to confirm, the water comes out from under the motor housing and not the aquastop valve. Is the motor facing the right way on the canister? Ummm... Check the inside rim of the canister and see if there is any build up of waste. It needs to be completely smooth. We will figure this out

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  8 лет назад

      +Kathleen Bouchard oh. Also check to see if the gaskets on the inlets of the aquastop valve are there. Little red ones. Those are very important too! The water could be leaking G there and filling the motor housing. Mine did that once.

    Hey I found your video and it was well done. I picked up a used 306 filter and they said it was losing pressure. I followed what you did and I’m getting no suction at all. I placed just the head into some shallow water and it will shoot water up a foot or two with no tube on it. I think it is a really big air leak since they system won’t pump any water at all. Even if I prime really fast it still won’t go. I can’t feel any air and if filled the filter up and flipped it over and nothing really comes out. At least not at an appreciable rate where I’d lose all suction. Filled all the tubes and locked the bottoms and nothing. Any thoughts on what I should check next?

    Solid video dude. Question for ya. I just got a tune up kit for my old 405 as one of the clips on my impeller cover broke, as well as the rubber tip on my shaft was missing. Kit came with a new gasket pre oiled, an impeller and cover, and the shaft. I noticed the shaft has the little rubber tip one one side. Am I correct by saying that the rubber side does down into the bottom of the slot where the impeller sits? As in, rubber side facing down when filter is setup? Also, it I have owned this filter for a few years now, and have maintained it well as far as cleaning it every 3-4 months. Would it be a good idea to disassemble the head like you did to clean it up? Is there any excess much that collects in the internals that would cause any harm or performance loss? Sorry for the novel lol. Thanks man and again, solid tear down and review.

    • @BrandonsTurtles

      thanks so much for the view and comment. im pretty sure the rubber boot goes into the motor side. the shaft of my 306 comes out with the rubber boot still in the hole. it'll sit down there to make sure the shaft doesnt rotate or wiggle. Ive rebuilt the head of both of my 306's about once a year. it gets pretty dirty but does not really inhibit the working function of the filter. i just purchased a g3 from fluval and its pretty much the same setup but i have no idea if i need to tear down to clean it once a year or not. seems pretty clean so far. lol. again thank you for the post, any other questions let me know! b

      Thanks for the input, got the rebuild kit installed and a good thorough cleaning on the 405, she really woke up! Really pumping out the gallons now. I did notice that the old plug was indeed stuck into the hole where the shaft fits in. I just pry'd it out and put the knew one in for good measure.

    Thank you so much for this video. It is excellent. I was primeing my pump 306 after a clean and the little white plunger button seemed to snap off I don't know if it broke or just came of, the little shaft that attaches the button to the plunger is pushed down inside the primer unit. Is it possible that it just came off or could it be broken. Can I order a new prmer assembly and if so where. Thnks so much.

      +leona oja the knob disconnects from the top of the shaft. hopefully the shaft is not broken, however they do sell them on ebay and amazon and many online places. search primer fluval 306. maybe even some local fish supplies stores may carry it too. good luck

      Thanks so much when the knob kind of fliped off when I was priming I pushed the black plunger part right in the white top pump knob piece looks normal. May be I broke the tip of the plunger that attaches to the pumper knob off. I guess I would have to take it apart to see if I could push the black part back up to reattach the plunger knob. So very nice of you to reply.

    • @BrandonsTurtles

      no problem, with the motor cover off, its easy to press the primer plunger back upward into the head to see the shaft. WATCH OUT for pushing the plunger back through the top, there is a tiny gasket that sits in there from the top. do not lose it! lol

    Hello Brandon. One important question? What after I performed the complete overhaul cleaning of my Fluval 306 canister filter and when I went to put back the grommets and the small pins; I happen to loose one. So, I have the other 5 in place. One in each corner and then chose one in the center to have one and the other I lost the small short pin that fits inside to expand the grommet into place. Where do I get some replacements? I went to the Fluval parts site and NO LUCK. Can you help me? Thank you so much for such a great video.

      +Eduardo Martinez one of my flowers said he used a small piece of weed watcher line. It was the same diameter. As for official replacement parts, I have yet to see these for sale anywhere. I hope you have a weed wacker.... Lol :)

    Wow amazing. My canister’s been working fine for over 21 years, I received several shocks recently when my hand was in the tank with it running, after unplugging it & trying several outlets, extension cords etc, the water is testing for current & voltage only when the fluval is running. If I take it apart as you’ve shown, can that be fixed? Thanks either way, great video!

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  3 года назад

      Sounds like there is a crack in the motor housing. I dont believe that can be repaired. With anything electrical, I would call that pump dead and replace it. You dont want to risk a full 120v load into the tank or even yourself

    Nice clear video! On my 406 the impeller is no longer working after a cleaning. I can hear that power gets to it but it won’t spin. Any experience with that type of problem? It’s an all in one shaft and magnet and the impeller goes on fine.

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  6 лет назад

      that is strange. is the magnet touching the sides at all? is your shaft in one piece? is the air tube that is beside this clear? is the impeller firmly attached to the magnet?

  • @TavorSwoods
    @TavorSwoods 6 лет назад

    Is it smarter to use the new gasket without any grease or add petroleum for a temporary fix? And how often do these gaskets usually need to be replaced? (The main one that surround the housing.

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  6 лет назад

      Hello. The main gasket should be replaced every year or so. Don't use petroleum jelly on it because it will swell then shrink and cause leaks. Silicone grease wont cause swelling. Much better. I'd recommend greasing even when new. Helps close the canister without binding up :)

    HI, water coming out of filter is very slow and low pressure, is that a propeller issue or what do you think? thank you I just dont want to spend another $170 for it :)

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  7 лет назад

      +Spanish IN Atlanta Hello there. Low pressure could mean a broken shaft, not fully priming, or air in the system that can't be sent out. If you pull out the impeller, there is a small tube to one side. It sends built up air out back to the tank keeping only water in the filter. Check if that small tube is clear.

    • @SpanishINAtlanta
      @SpanishINAtlanta 7 лет назад

      thank you for your reply! I actually got it to work!! LOL I just cleaned the hoses out completely and then filled both of them with water, somehow that helped to jump start the filter and it is pumping water like its nobodys business! :D I hope this lasts!

    Brandon,
    My Fluval 405 consumes 27 W instead of 23 W. I am checking it with a power meter. I was thinking to clean the motor of according to your video it is sealed, and apparently I can not clean it at all. What can I do to solve the problem? Can could it be the origin of it? Any clue will be appreciated.

    On the 305 - How do you take the primer plunger apart? After the 5 screws, Hammering the pins seems scary. I have not done it. Is it a different pin than the 306? p.s siliconing the primer boot made BIG difference in start up. Thanks of the video

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  7 лет назад

      +Bill Wallace should be very close to the same. The canister size may be the only difference but I don't have a 305.not too sure. Those plastic pins are designed to be pushed out. Go slow and if you're not sure, or comfortable doing it then don't. I don't want something to break because of my video. I'm glad the silicone helps!

      hi there. the fluval 306 motor assembly is a stand alone water proof unit. more than likely, the impeller shaft and or the impeller itself is damaged. i would start with a new shaft and impeller to check if the filter is worth keeping. a replacement motor assembly is around a hundred dollars. but for that price it might be worth getting a whole new pump. easiest thing to do is check the ceramic shaft to see if it is broken or not. hope this helps!!! hello there. the top seal under the clips may be torn, or very dry. i sometimes will have to use a kitchen safe type grease to coat the gasket before reassembly. if it is dry it can bind the gasket up while it is closing. first maybe just try getting the gaket wet with water when closing then see if it seals better. hope that helps!

    • @BrandonsTurtles
      @BrandonsTurtles  8 лет назад

      hmmm. maybe get the housing dry and dab some superglue to the end of a pen/pencil/stick. something and make sure the glue doesnt get into the crack, just on the shaft. then hopefully you can pull it out. i cant remember if there is a rubber nub inside the housing to hold the shaft. if so you might be able to push into it with needle nosed pliers and pull the rubber and the shaft out. good luck!!! hope you can find some solution!
