  • My best finds from last year, it's a vintage show and tell! I did wear the green suit out antiquing last weekend, and it was so lovely to finally wear it out and about. Also I used our new favorite neckline here to make the navy pique dress with all in one sleeves as you can see, and the temptation to use this neckline on everything still remains...

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Get the 3D printer and start your own line. Don't think of it as adding more plastic, think of it as making collectable handbags of the future. Years from now people will come across one of your bags and say "my mom used to watch her youtube videos."

If you're concerned about the ethics of plastic use in making plastiflex purses, there is the option of using recycled plastic. Recycling is an imperfect process, and it's obviously not as efficient as simply not making new things at all, but it might be enough to assuage the environmental guilt of making plastic things.

You have such a cool collection, I would love to see some vintage styling videos with your recent finds where you're just styling outfits and pulling the whole look together with accessories and all that. That's one of my favorite parts of your making-of videos - getting to see the new dress/etc. styled up in a whole look.
And WOW, that green suit! Beautiful!
Also for the plastiflex handbag idea, there've been a lot of recent innovations in plastic that's bio based. Some of them can even be composted in industrial composting! What if you used one of those for the 3D printing?

That green suit gave me a flashback to 1989. I worked at Macy’s at the time, and there was a dress/jacket combination very typical of the 80s does 40s action that I had my eye on. The dress was a bottle-green floral print rayon, and the jacket was cut just like the jacket of that suit.
I waited for the sale, and someone else grabbed the last one in my size the day before the sale.
I might have cried a little bit.

Oh that Lilli Ann suit is beautiful! Would love to see the alteration process.
A few other people have brought up that you can use recycled or biodegradable filament to print with to lessen the impact.
I do think it’s important to at the very least get someone to model and document the pieces in the 3D printing format even if you never print one before it becomes lost to history.
If you choose that route you should maybe look for a bag in poor condition so it can be deconstructed for measurements/construction techniques.

Great finds and awesome gifts! I would love to see how you alter the suit. I also love antique and vintage beaded handbags though my own collection is all hand-me-downs from family.
Many years ago, I set out to limit myself on buying things. I found the best way to handle my urge was to set a budget. My personal budget is not as much based on dollars spent as it is based on items acquired. For example, only one pair of new shoes per year, maximum 15 new articles of clothing per year (yes this includes undergarments and loungewear), and 5 new accessories per year. Limiting myself in this way has helped immensely with not only saving space in my overstuffed closets and dressers, but has also helped me make more thoughtful choices regarding quality and (somehow) has managed to save quite a bit of money.

I'm a 3d artist. Just let me know if you'd like me to model something for you. Lots of people and services print in biodegradable PLA filament. Just generally speaking, humans have known how to make plastic from natural polymers like starch since at least 1990. That said, filament printing may not suit your use, depending on how fine the detail and smoothness you require. Or how many copies you want. If you want lots of smooth and/or detailed individual pieces rather than a whole bag as a single print, it might be better and cheaper to print in casting resin, then go to a casting service and have pieces cast in whatever you want. That's also how you can get custom jewelry made for about the cost of the metal.
So let me know! I'd love to collaborate.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  2 года назад

Thanks for the info! I have never worked outside of textiles, so plastics are bizarre to me 😂 I totally think casting or molding the tiles would be way easier, especially since it takes around 50 tiles a bag maybe. I need to investigate further for sure!

    • @kobaltkween
      @kobaltkween 2 года назад

@@TheClosetHistorian Definitely. Just looking at it as a design problem, without actually seeing the bag and knowing exactly how the pieces fit together, I think it could go two ways. You could print a bag, or a side of a bag, as one whole piece. The issue in that case would big issues would be the cost of printing/materials, the time it would take to print, and the work of finishing off a print with all those little bits and pieces. Or you could print a single piece, finish that off, get as many copies cast as you want in the material you want, then assemble them into a bag. In which case the big issue would be time and effort assembling, because casting is cheaper than printing. Time might not be a big difference if you use a service in both cases, but cost probably would be. The print to cast method is what both jewelry and doll industry people do.
I haven't worked with any of these materials yet either, just the 3D part. That said, I've done a lot of research into 3D printing, since that's my next adventure. And I'm kind of enamored with the idea of making my own jewelry. As far as I can tell, it's _way_ cheaper than buying anyone else's designs, in addition to seeming more fun.

Love the idea of 3-D printing the purses. And yes, if you are going to make something cheap, poor quality, and just to fill a space on the shelf because you are out of ideas and just need to MAKE something, you are, indeed, a bastard, HOWEVER! If you are making something beautiful that will be used and loved, then NO, you are not adding plastic to the environment, because they will not be throwing it out. I have a theory that if we quit making ugly crap, we can quit throwing away so much stuff. Controversial, I know. Oh, and box handbag video, Absolutely!

  • @siobhanhogan4495

The Plastiflex purse reminds me of the recycled candy wrapper purses. They're both woven, so perhaps you could try to utilize existing plastic and cut/fold it into tiles. 3D printing filament can be repurposed/recycled, but to do this consumes energy and releases chemicals. Of course, that's just a fact of life (lol), so recycling plastic into 3D filament is an "eco-friendly" option. Programming a printer allows for more intricacy/accuracy, too. But, I don't see why you couldn't take a plastic milk jug and place a piece into some kind of heat/mould thing (kinda like silk flower making..?), and make tiles that way? Definitely would be more laborious... You could also go the route of using a machine that would cut or etch the design onto plastic? You could look into hydraulic options? There's lots of ways you could do it, and I hope you get a chance to sometime in the near future! I really like the idea of vintage designs made from recycled (modern) materials!

I'm a little late to the party here, but regarding 3D printed plastic for handbags: It's very common to use PLA plastic for 3D printing, which is made from fermented plants, not petroleum, and is recyclable and biodegradable under certain conditions. You can also obtain recycled PLA for 3D printing. All that to say sustainable 3D printing is a thing. :)

Okay, I had to take a couple of days before getting around to commenting on this. YES recreating the plasti-flex purse is probably a great product idea. I had to do some research (2 mins), try "3d print biodegradable plastic". That yields 4 ads and 6 materials reviews. I think some of the new materials are truly compostable and also strong and rigid enough for your purpose. Their life-span outside the composter can't yet be known, of course. I do think it would be incredibly cool. Your anxiety makes me like you all the more; not because you are anxious per se, but because you are serious about protecting our home. Thank you.

The metallic green shoes and bag 😍 so beautiful!!
Re bringing new plastics into the world. I was speaking to a client of mine the other day about this. I mentioned my concerns with it (as I'm bringing more plastic into the world with a product of mine). She is incredibly 'up' on environmentally friendly practises and ethics etc and she said that plastics have a place in the world, there was a reason it was created. However, single use plastic is the main issue. Also, PETG (which is what I'll be using) is better at biodegrading than acrylic, for example. I think if you are going to make a bag that you will cherish and use and mend and re-sell for example, then you are not part of the main problem. Hope this helps!

    1. 12:58 Do It! It's a useful functioning item that is not one time single use and destined to be garbage. You can do small batches (of recycled plastics as Jennifer Whyte notes) so people who want to cherish them in their own collections will keep them out of dumps/landfills. Another advantage to small batches is the ability to change the design of the tile shape and not just the color way sooo lots of variation to tinker with there. Also you would low key be doing a reproduction of a really cool style of bag that history bounders for the period it was made in would love to have in their collections and closets. As someone who thinks about things that could be reproduced for appreciators of today... this would be a really cool project to undertake. In your own time of course.
    2. Show us all of your bags! And the suit that you have to alter too! In general show us all of the things when ever possible.
    3. If it's not a hassle can we please see some close ups on IG of the details on the jackets and bags? I'd love to see the details of the cuts/seams that you mentioned in this video along with the eye buttons and textures of the bags.
    4. No one will blame you for snatching up a steal of a deal on Etsy or any other similar site, because Finders Keeper...is a thing and going Cold Turkey on the shopping is a bit of a Tough Road to Hoe, only three months into the year. But Hoe it You Will!

Am I a horrible person for not minding plastic if it gets used to make a beautiful bag like that which won't get tossed after a singe use like most plastic objects? Maybe, but I get distracted by beautiful things easily and that bag sure is beautiful.
And I know it's scary, so I get why you won't, but I think it would be very intresting to see you alter that suit. It really depends on where you stand with views on vintage clothing. Should they be worn and serve the purpose they were made for (though gently, and with care) or should they be put away to be preserved for studies and future generations. But if you're gentle on the suit you could do both right? I always have a duality with vintage because of that because I think it's too beautiful and a shame if it doesn't get to shine but I am also clumbsy. What ever you decide to do I will support you in your choice, not just because it's yours and why would internet people have a say what you do with your stuff but also because I just don't know where I stand anymore. (sorry for the ramble, I hope you're having a great day!)

I have four cats and two dogs and my favorite of the lot has nothing to do with me. A cat of course. 😏. I spend obscene amounts of time trying to win her affection.

There are recycled plastic 3d printer spool manufacturers. Idk what the companies are but they are out there. I will start saving for the bag you design now.

3-D printing those tiles sounds like a great idea. I know there are some filament makers that claim to have recycled types of filament...so, maybe that would help with some of it??

Wow, that coat is stunning, that one really jumped out to me! 😍 The striped clutch is amazing too and I'm not even a handbag person! Putting in my vote to see the Lilli Ann suit after it gets altered, count me as curious about that. 😁

Idk about the ethics of plastics... But your local library might have a 3D printer and a library of items that you could use to help make the shapes you'd need to recreate the handbags. You could ask if they use recycled plastic.

I know “we all need to do our little part” but we also shouldn’t be limiting ourselves entirely as small run-creators. Make a good, durable, product, that pays a living wage for time spent creating them, and sell them to people who don’t want to support massive multi-national corporations that exploit their workers and generate more tonnes of waste per month, than you will output in both waste and product in a year.

I 100% agree wit the bit about cats and dogs. Dogs are so eager to please and have no chill and I just can’t deal with that. Although my cat is kind of full on when he has the zoomies but I love him too much.
