Bet Curtis loves the dacron headsail...😉 As someone who follows your channel, the mid ocean transits are awesome - the slower pace, the rhythms of the sea, i enjoy those episodes knowing it's an integral part of cruising and at the end, another goal is reached and a new experience begins. It's a refresher between courses. Great stuff.
Wow! Silence, wind, waves, dolphins, bird, sea life, Roxy, great sailing, sunrises and sunsets, nice weather, and having each other, what else could you ask for? So many beautiful things to be thankful for. Great episode. Thanks for sharing y’all’s journey with us.
Kate and Curtis, why did you call your boat Sweet Ruca, where did the name come from?… just curious… John and Penny, Ontario, Canada…. We enjoy all your presentations….❤️⚓️❤️
I enjoy your channel your actually sailing not hanging out at the local marina drinking all day like some sailboat channels that have lots of viewers. Great videos especially South America and the horn.
Oh yea. Coffee with Sweet Ruca. Beautiful scenery. Day 4 sunrise was epic and then you all hit the dolphin jackpot. Was good to see Roxy in full spirits too. Glad you had good weather for the sail take down. Keep having fun and stay safe.
What a great sails! Little problem, it seems. These carbon/mylar/modern sails can be stitched or they must be "glued" only? Thank God you the old trusty dracon ;) Fair winds, see you on the next!
Nicely done episode. I enjoy some smooth sailing since not something I can enjoy on the water. That seam failure seems problematic, and I have to wonder how prevalent is with this particular brand and others. Dacron while not so high tech might be easier to repair at sea. Thanks !
Kate. When you said “ alone in the Pacific,” after a while, I thought you were actually soloing as didn’t see Curtis’ head till 3/4 of the way thru the episode. 👍🏻😊 Wonder why a loft would actually use glue on an expensive sail? Happy you guys are safe and Roxy looks great ‼️ See you next time. ✨🌊💨⛵️⚓️🏝️👙🌞✨🎄
Haha! Right on! Curtis should just stay below and let Kate solo! 😄 About the sail, that is how they do them these days, the glues are sometimes stronger than stitching. Amazing technology.
@, sometimes. Yet you guys go-for-it. More than most sailors. Glue, OK, yet triple zigzag stitching ( Curtis’ suggestion) as well, as you are/were on an 1,800 mile voyage and need/needed your tools in tact. 🥰😌
I wonder if carbon fiber isn't brittle like Kevlar, which holds its shape well, but needs replacing every season or two. First glance, it appears to be the product of a rub or strain. Sail tape, needle and thread should fix it fine. This is the first I've heard of glue on a sail. Could we be on the bleeding edge of technology?
I have done many trips through the doldrums. In fact I don't think weather routing software is very valuable for getting through the doldrums. The weather predictions we get at sea are from various computer model predictions by supercomputers. Models such as GFS and ECMWF and others tell us what to expect. None of the models do well in winds under 10 knots or in areas of high thermal or orographic influence. So the foldrums themselves are not predicted well. The chief value is in predicting the extent of the trade winds N & S of the convergence which might give you a narrower place to cross through the instability and thunderstorms. While racing we use satellite photos of the cloud coverage to see where the wind is, if it's allowed.
Would be a nice follow up video from these two racing cruisers. There, I guess, will be three global answers to your question, each summarising to "it depends". In mast furling, in boom furling, or manual reefing only. Sail shape (curvature) will be different, I guess again, in each of these cases.
One of our good friends aboard the boat Granma hails from Turkey, you can see it in the episode leaving Tenerife, and we meet again in Itajai, Brazil 😃
How do you manage the dog's exercise requirements? Judging from our own dog, he is smaller but needs 3 - 4 walks of little less than 1000 meters each. Let's assume that your boat is 50 feet and the dog needs 3 - 4 walks per day of about 2000 meters (= a bit more than 6500 feet) = 65 up and down the full length of the ship three times a day. How do you coupe with that?
And dogs love to smell the fragrance from other dogs, it's like their social media. I'm interested to learn about the solutions that you have put in place to address this - i.e. the dog's exercise requirements and its social health.
We play fetch or tug-a-war inside. And she takes walks around the decks, taking in the scent of birds, fish, dolphins, and sometimes sharks! When we aren't on passage she meets lots of other people and animals while we explore. Swimming and paddleboarding keep her in great shape while she takes in the smells of a new place.
Great analysis, thank you! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?

Looks like great sailing, then your sail problem. Boat looks clean and well organized. Congratulations, see you in the Marshall Islands!
Thanks!!!!! 🙏 Are you in the Marshall Islands now?
Very graceful boat to look at. I love your professionale drone footage. Sailing in the state of grace.
Thanks! We are glad you enjoyed it!
Kate and Curtis, why did you call your boat Sweet Ruca, where did the name come from?… just curious… John and Penny, Ontario, Canada…. We enjoy all your presentations….❤️⚓️❤️
It’s a long story and it has a double meaning, we wrote some blog posts about it on our website www.sweetruca.com Cheers to our Canadian friends 🇨🇦

It's starting to feel that way!
So Pleasant!! Thumbs up
Thanks so much for the kind words 😀
This episode was one of your BEST ...⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pure sailing experiences and appreciated by all who race and cruise with wind power.⛵⛵
Love the endless sound of the waves slapping against the boat like waves crashing on shore. Very meditative.
The bluest blue in the deep blue blue. Good for you.
Thank you!

The answer will be in the future episodes :-) Our sailmaker is awesome and taking good care of us.
Just crossing a bit of an ocean yet still a nice video. Great!
Barking for the love of barking! Roxy the Sea Dog.

I could be wrong but were these not new sales?
🙌🙌🙌

That’s why they call it the Pacific Ocean
Tough news about the sail. Is there anyplace in the Marshall Islands with a sail loft or can you do the repairs yourselves?
Who manufactured that failed sail?

It is, perhaps, a tad late to suggest that you explain how weather software gets you through the doldrums. Maybe next time. It's something to do.

Do the sails these days still have battens ?
Not the foresails.

Why are you skipping many of the islands in the South Pacific?
