Weckl's easy style is so musical, it is just a total joy to watch and listen to. His flow is so easy and his finger and release control is fascinating and entertaining.
Love when Weckl, Peart, Portnoy and Bozzio did the Sabian Players Spotlight vid. Weckl played his piece on the kit and Bozzio says "It's hard to think about the cymbals because you play so beautifully" and Peart says "Thanks for the lesson." You know you're great when those cats call it in.
What is with people bashing the drummers on this incredible work? These guys were paying tribute to one of the finest drummers to ever walk the earth. Obviously they are not Buddy Rich! However, I'd challenge any of the nay sayers here to publish a video that compares or trumps the playing on this video or any other from the series. Good on Neil and the other drummers who took the time to put this together, and mad props to Dave for swinging a tasty and difficult tune.
Todd Liggett - "Obviously they are not Buddy Rich!" LMAO!!!! Buddy Rich wouldn't begin to keep up with someone like a Dave Weckl or a Steve Smith, Vinnie Colaiuta, Virgil Donati, etc.
Why are people so needlessly nasty ? It s a tribute to a GREAT player. All those involved are paying tribute . I doubt that they would be as cruel/ narrow minded if they were in the room , talking to THE MAN. It s called respect. Ok I m done.
Dave’s technique is the best of any drummer I’ve ever seen. I guarantee he is the most technically advanced drummer you’ve ever seen, of course, without disregard to Buddy. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dave, and I will say that for the rest of my life, I will always have a special spot for him in my heart.
I first became familiar with Dave's work in the GRP All Stars albums, and he doesn't disappoint here for a nanosecond. I liked the way he slowed the tempo in the last bar to build to the crescendo. Great to see the string bass, too!
It's so funny to read comments from the uninformed. Dave isn't trying to sound like Buddy Rich. Dave is his own man, as was Buddy, and they're two different players, but that doesn't take away from Weckl's amazing performance. And for those criticizing Weckl, how about posting a video of yourself playing along to this song? Yeah, didn't think so.
I was never a big fan of Weckl's until he started experimenting with Latin/fusion music and for me at least, it all came together for him. I always thought he was way too stiff until that point. All technique and no feel. Now, he is just such a complete player and one of those players who piss me off mightily because he makes everything look so effortless. Even in this video (1994), I can now appreciate what I couldn't the.
if you REALLY wanna get pissed off chk out Dave's ''drum solo live in Beirut, Lebanon 2015'' (warning: there are 2 particular parts in that solo where it sounds like he's ''applying'' the double bass usage but his legs are not even moving) there is this mix-up rudiments / p-diddles that he does so frickin' fast ... that it's SICK !
the time is on top, super tight band. to say weckl is not swinging or not tight with bassist is laughable. he is extremely fluid, fantastic whip producing tight powerful (but still light) accents on the snare, which make the swing groove funky (reminding of gadd meets tony williams). But besides all this and most important everything so musical, the fills are so tasty and clever, listen to 02:47, i am sure buddy would loive it. simple idea but with a real edge. Perfect musicianship!
Gotta give a shoutout to the bass player as well. Absolutely stellar job locking up perfectly with all these different drummers with their distinctive styles.
Weckl gives this tune a calmer feel than Rich, probably fully intentionally. But I prefer a really aggressive and hyper swing pattern on this one (Greg Bisonette did just that surprisingly well, live). That said, Dave Weckl displays a degree of control at the end (ca 3.00-3.42) that is nothing but impressive.
This may piss off some people but here goes. First. Dave Weckl is one of my top 5 favorite drummers IN THE WORLD, a phenomenal artist. But, Buddy Rich OWNS big band drumming and I bet even Dave Weckl would agree. The difference is this : Dave plays big band great and I can listen and enjoy it, but then it's over. I can watch Buddy play this stuff 10,000 times and be blown away EVERY SINGLE TIME, mesmerized at how he does it. Buddy OWNS the arena of big band drumming. The big band drummer(s) closest to Buddy, in my opinion, was the late great Louie Bellson and the late great Ed Shaughnessy. These younger guys trying to play Buddy's music only reminds me of how great Buddy was. Thanks for the tribute but there will never be another big band drummer like Buddy Rich. Likewise, I am equally mesmerized by Dave's talent when he's playing HIS style.
I love to read comments of people saying Weckl is a “strong “ of a player on this chart. Buddy Rich has a version of this chart on his album “Roar From 74’ “ that is very stylistically similar to Weckl’s version . This is honestly one of the better tributes to Buddy .
These Zildjians sound much better than his Sabians, imo. I don't care for the way he has his toms cranked up. Dave is an amazing player though, for sure.
Let's not forget THE BAND! Buddy always had the hottest Big Band around. Any time you've got Steve Marcus on sax and a group that good you're in for some good music! OH, and Weckl does a REALLY good job here. No, not as good as Buddy did, but Buddy wasn't human, so that's not really a fair comparison. 😆
I've never «understood» jazz. Do they ever play a song the same way twice? I mean, there is no melody, no lyrics, no obvious verse/chorus/bridge, it just sounds like improvisation. Technically insane, but improvisation nonetheless. Any help?
Theres melodies. Theres choruses. The solos are usually whats improvised, and they are rarely played the same way twice, if ever. I started playing drums with jazz charts in HS. That was over 20 years ago. With jazz, like you mentioned, most of it is improvised. As a drummer, id stick to some main parts sounding the same, but the patterns id use to keep time would vary alittle from performance to performance. Its all about feeling the music. It sounds cheesy, but when a soloist would perform, id have a "conversation" with them and mimic parts of their solo on the drums. Jazz is super fun to play because, aside from the main themes and choruses, its all made by the performers.
who the hell is Dave Weckl anyway dammit? was he in legendary groups like The Cars, AC/DC, or Modern English? i think not, so that makes Weckl a NOBODY, don't it? HAH HAH ! .....(sry, but my P.C. is about to explode from an overdose (and a massive one at that!) of ''Stephen Colbert'' style sarcasm so joke will have to be cut short ...) sry folks
first class drummer Dave talented musican and the great man (Buddy)could learn a thing or two from Mr Weckle BUT not from this track.sorry Dave well played but just feel somethings "missing" in your set,
YOU HAVE SEEN HIS NAME THOUSANDS OF TIMES.......THOUSANDS !!!!! AND STILL YOU CAN'T SPELL..........LEARN TO SPELL AND DON'T COME BACK TILL YOU DO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So easy in his attitude and drumming.... Amazing Weckl
That was immense. What a pro performance.

TheEdge - You’re an ignorant asshole.
@Drummer Albert Rivera take a look at his channel 😆
Dave Weckl is just amazing.
Thanks for this David Weckl. It's always excellent seeing Steve Marcus soloing ! ! !
oh my. excellent drummer/musician. he made it look so easy.
Dave is such a solid drummer with great chops. He keeps the intended groove of this song nicely. Tasteful playing!
Beyond words one of the greatest drumming performances of all time.
Dave Weckl is Something Else. He's Just Dave. Steve Gadd and Vinnie Are as Well. They Shaped So Many Drummers over 50 years.
master percussionist. body so relaxed and generates so much power. will go on forever due to great ergonomics. moves around the kit melodically
I first became familiar with Dave's work in the GRP All Stars albums, and he doesn't disappoint here for a nanosecond. I liked the way he slowed the tempo in the last bar to build to the crescendo. Great to see the string bass, too!
I do not understand why, please someone tell me why there's five dislikes on this video. I love it. Thanks for sharing it.
The 5 dislikes are haters. Jealous people. Dame shame about these Jealous assholes.
You can really see just how much control he has. WOW

Come on ... ALL of these musicians are fabulous.
I gotta SIT DOWN now.Dave..you CRAZY. INCREDIBLE.
Weckl is a beast. Unreal.

+stevedrums Yeah the latin stuff really opened my eyes.

Waddaya mean? He's been heavily into the latin-fusion thing since the start...1985: ruclips.net/video/WQ2RpSBtH7M/видео.html
If you want to see a loose and improved Weckl, check out Mark Kelso
Formidable ! Mr.Dave !

Maybe it's his punchy snaredrum sound that triggers some
Gotta give a shoutout to the bass player as well. Absolutely stellar job locking up perfectly with all these different drummers with their distinctive styles.
Amazing performance. Thank you for sharing!
Simply the best
What a sound!
I like how he honors the first big fill that Buddy always seemed to use in this tune, with the silent count before the brass hit.
The Drums sounds awesome.
This event was really a passing of the torch; Steve Marcus's afro was on the decline, and Dave's mullet was on the rise.
Studio drum Par exellance, super natural drum sound, Great trebles.
Pretty damn masterful.
Phenomenal!
Genial, sublime¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Perfect
And still my favourite....
It's incredible how he changed his style after Gruber experience
Dave Weckl the GOAT!
Back in the day when music recording was well rehearsed and recorded in one take.
Neal Peart was the producer, along with Buddy's daughter Cathy and her husband of the two Burning For Buddy CD's.

Buddy rich only owns big band drumming to you. lol
Holy shit!
perfetct!
Thanks!
Very good player, I like it.
Weckl is a terrific drummer. I met him at a Sam Ash music store and he even signed my poster of himself. I don’t have the poster anymore sadly.....☹️
3:14 + sick drum fill!
It's not a fill, it's called solo! 😀
music for Transport Tycoon? :) Amazing!
GOD
Dave Weckl is the best drummer alive

It swings like hell. I think Buddy would have gone.. hmm that is not bad hmm...
You just can’t miss Steve Marcus’s unmistakeable afro lmao
Big band music is so frantic sounding
Simply the best!
!!!
I have the same drumser as Kenny got from guitar center
These Zildjians sound much better than his Sabians, imo. I don't care for the way he has his toms cranked up. Dave is an amazing player though, for sure.
Sorry but tell Dave there is something missing in this performance is like telling the guys in RUSH that LaVilla Stragiato is a little too basic lol
He’d be great with the Kenny G band.

à 3:13 j'ai mis en vente ma batterie !!!
Buddy would have been of Dave's interpretation.
The bassist is not exactly pushing the tempo...ever so slightly behind - I love the sound
I tunes!????
He was much better sounding with the Zildjians
Only Buddy Rich held the throne in this gig. Weckl ... nah, two cylinders short....though I am sure it was fun.
Drumset not drumser
bel taglio di capelli !!!!!hahahahahaha

Just not sitting for most of it. Bass and drums not in the same pocket
When Buddy Rich played this, he really drove the band.
Dave lacks power here.
A far cry from Buddy Rich :-((((( sacrilegious !!!!! Terrible
richard b davis is latin for dipshit
