- We headed off to one of the most dramatic spots on the island of Tenerife; Masca.
Until 1991, there was no road to Masca, and it’s very clear why- it is a seriously inaccessible part of the island. The stunning road to get there has hairpin bend after hairpin bend, and Masca, with its 80 inhabitants, sits onto of a cliff.
This was the spot of the Guanches; a race of people who inhabited the Canary Islands from about 200BC, all the way through to the Spanish conquest in 1496.
Originally discovered by French explorer Jean de Béthencourt in around 1410, the Guanches were very tall, white, with blonde hair and blue eyes- and they never progressed beyond the stone age due to their remote location.
No one knows for sure how or why they were there, but they live, completely cut off from the rest of the world, for around 1,000 years before the Europeans came.
Masca is accessible by car and motorbike, but there are limited parking spaces, so if coming by car, it may be worth coming before 10am, or after 6pm. Although parking is free!
The roads in Tenerife are genuinely some of the best driving and riding roads I’ve seen- beautifully maintained, largely empty and stunning views.
Tenerife is a real motorcycling hotspot- there are a huge amount of bikers in Tenerife. From gross of Harley Davidson riders, to sports biker riders and everything in-between- Tenerife is one of the best motorcycling destinations I've ever been to!

Tenerife is an amazing place,there is so much more to it than the holiday resorts in the South .It truly is a paradise .
Love riding in the Canaries me! If you get a chance to take the ferry to Gran Canaria the riding in the canyons in the middle of the island are stunning (think Grand Canyon) - completely different to Tenerife.....loving the vids Freddie and Monica, keep 'em coming!

Just a correction there. Teide is 3715mt. Highest “mountain” in Spain and one of Europe’s highest volcanos.

I went to that village when the road opened in 91 . There is a path down to the sea where the villagers used to have contact with the rest of Tenerife. I was told it was an old pirate village, the only way in and out was that well trodden path . There is a strange eerie silence in the whole valley there from what I remember. It all looks as beautiful as ever. Thank you for taking us with you .

The drive to Masca is great fun, with amazing views. The village is beautiful. The view from the café is fantastic. I first went there is 1991, and again in 1998. The road looks a lot safer today.,

Back in the 70 s when I started learning Spanish we had a Spanish assistant from Tenerife. He spoke of these blond blue eyed people as the original inhabitants. When I first went to Tenerife in 1989 I was shocked too find only tourists and Mediterranean people. So good to hear this again.
As you drive along some of these houses remind me of South America. Amazing.

Fascinating history. Stunning views and topography. Beautifully shot and presented. Really liked the shadow shot on the bike revealing Monika's presence of sorts. Hi Freddie. I've just discovered your channel and i love your videos. High quality ones! And as others have said, i appreciate that you show our islands in a very respectful and different point of view from the usual beach and sun tourism. Just a botanical note. The plant you showed is not Aloe vera, it's Agave americana, an invasive plant introduced from central America centuries ago, as well as the prickly pear plants (i think this is the word in english) you can see over all the landscape.

I've just checked and you're absolutely right- 3,700meters! Ahhh yes- the road is 2.4km high, but I didn't realise the peak was that much higher!

We went to Tenerife (for the first time) in 2000 on honeymoon and stayed in Los Chrristianos. Having forgotten my driving licence my new wife had to drive the rental Corsa. Having navigated around the island and got stuck in torrential rain I noticed a small road back which eventually passed Masca . We had to turn off the AC to get the little Corsa to go up the steepest parts Masca was still very quiet and not commercially developed. We have returned a number of times .Recommend the zoo park ( sorry if you already know it). Enjoy your vids very much.

Went through those roads in a coach and its not for the faint hatred i can tell you, But it is stunning and fascinating at the same time.
A great way to see the island from a sofa! I only looked around the northern end but now I'll go back to tour on the R E Himalayan.
If you decide to leg it up Teide, beware ... it's actually 3700 metres!

Another beautiful vid. I had my first date with my wife Monika in Masca.There is a small creek further down, she slipped and fell into the water and lay there like a bug, kicking her arms and legs. I took the opportunity to "rescue" her on the very first day of our life together. :-)
Btw, the "Teide" ist exactly 3715 tall, and these plants (at minute 9) are agaves, not Aloe Vera. Greetings from La Palma.
