Didn't know until yesterday that Hal was also one of the voices of Whit on Adventures in Odyssey.
He was the first voice. I love Adventures in Odyssey still listen to it 🔥
Yup! He was the very first voice of whit! Still listen to it to this day!
Yep for the first 7 years of the show.
He was the original, Mr. Whitaker playing the part from the very first test pilot episode of a series called family portraits which later morphed into Odyssey, until he passed away in 1994.
The Mortal Coil was recorded just after Hal's wife past away. Part of Hal's speech at Focus on the Family after his wife died was later used as part of Mr. Whitaker's farewell in "Gone" & "Not Forgotten"!
He also did the voice of Goliath on a animated children’s Christian TV show named Davey & Goliath. I used to watch when I was a kid back in the 70’s.
Who didn't love Otis? My hero !!!
Other then Barney He was my 2nd favorite on the show .
In his later years, he was incredibly well-known to most evangelical millennials as the voice of John Avery Whitaker on the incredibly successful children’s radio drama Adventures in Odyssey. It’s one of the most famous radio shows created since the 1950s and in this country it’s probably the most successful one. he was just, incredible and made such an impact on the lives of so many children and of course his work on Andy Griffith is legendary.
I love that Mr. Whittaker's actor big break was being the town drunk.
I loved Otis , he passed away in 1994 .
Otis ( Hal ) never drank in real life. Love Otis❤
Thank you bart
Love Otis
There's our favorite 77 year old Owl actor!
Hal smith was a director, was on a ghost and mr chicken, some voice overs McDonald's, Flintstones etc
In real life Hal never drank. He was happily married but after his wife passed away in 1992, Hal's health took a turn for the worse and he passed in 1994.
And advocate for...MADD..A great man
I watch Andy Griffith on my channel called “Me TV”. I love it, it they just show it from 1960 until 1965. And NEVER show any of the Andy shows from fall of 65 and on!! I think those years were the best ones!! ( The ones with Barney in them). No doubt about it!! But I still would like to see the remaining years, at least some of the time!! Does anyone else have Chanel’s that have Andy Griffith on that just show the first 5 years??
OMG!! THIS WAS WONDERFUL/ NOW IM CHECKING OUT ALL OF THE CHARACTORS Like Ernest T. Bass
Ernest was actually 1 of the producers of the show actually.
That AGS theme song version they played at 1:18 was just terrific.
He was a very talented actor any played in lots of commercials
I saw the episode about Otis being the descendant of the founder of the town. Barney also claimed to be a descendant so I joked about Otis and Barney being cousins.
Hal Smith mentioned that he was doing voices of Disney characters in 📽️ cartoons, but it would've been nice if he had given a tip of the hat 🎩 to original voices such as Sterling Holloway's 🐻 Winnie the Pooh, and (Ukelelli Ike) Cliff Edward's Jiminy Cricket. 🦗
WHIT!!!!!
What’s ridiculous is that they cut his character towards the end of the series because he portrayed a drunk but they didn’t say anything about Dean Martin all those years he acted as if he were drunk on stage in reality he was drinking apple juice in fact he rarely drank but they didn’t pick on him the Hypocrisy of our society astounds me
Nothing fair about that!!!!!
John Avery Whittaker!
😊
Why did Piglet stare into the toilet bowl? He was looking for Pooh.
John Dunsworth probably learned a few things from Hal in the art of playing a drunk person.
Winds of sh*t!
Ralph had a snobby "Air" about him. I just didn't care for him. I liked Otis (Hal Smith) though!
Is he actually drunk?
No it’s just a character Hal was usually sober
Otis would have been here sooner, but he ran into some evil companions
Fun fact: Otis was not only the town drunk but he also didnt wipe well...He always smelt like dried poop, pickled pig feet and sweaty scrotum.
After watching the full clip I have mixed feelings on the host calling him Otis all the time even when he was out of character I think it would’ve been more respectful to call him Hal when appropriate
This is almost sad to see. This is 20+ years later and it's the same old shtick. He didn't look this bad in the 1960's. I guess type casting truly is a bitch. :-/ The 3 airheads sitting next to him is a riot. 8:23 Reminds me of Kartrashcan sisters of today, just a different mold.
Apparently you are not familiar with Hal's career or the extent of his impressive resume & body of work. You should remedy that by doing some research.
Of course he didnt look that bad it was 20+ years earlier... He voiced alot of characters in case you didn't watch whole video. He had a great career !
This is awful because his character was never this de shelved. He was a respectable citizen with a drinking problem not a homeless hobo
Yes. Sorry, they did this to him.
