  • The ceiling panels on our narrowboat, Briny Marlin, have been stained white then varnished. Have a look at our video to see how we worked out the right ratios of wood stain to varnish (using plastic spoons and chopsticks) and how we applied it to the ash-faced plywood.

Hi Sherri, thanks for watching, glad you found it helpful. We're still getting used to low ceilings (keep banging in to it) but it does bounce the light around. Best, Martin

We are sure a decorator we had in once used a lawn sprinkler to do the walls and ceilings in our house as he was done that quickly :-)

I am still concerned that you don't have a firewall between the engine & the rest of the boat! There should be a steel bulkhead welded at least as high as the engine that separates the two for safety!

I think that this is needed for seagoing craft which fall in to a different category than canal boats.

My concerns are for the fact that the boat had previously suffered fire. Just for safety, I would have a steel bulkhead welded in so that in the event of a major fuel spill or worse happened, it would be contained in the engine compartment.

Thanks for reply Jo, that's very helpful.
We are being very careful about the "f" word as you know the history of the boat. The original "f" was start by a chip pan (seriously, on a boat?) though obviously they can happen anywhere. We'll be treating the wood in the engine bay with Envirograf a fire retardant coating, a bit expensive but will at least let us get out in time if need be.
Thanks for your concern though Ken, we appreciate it.

Hi Silky Jones, if only... with working for a living and much travelling, we cannot do more vids at the moment. I work freelance so I have to work when the work is in. New vid coming soon. Thanks for watching and for commenting :) best, Martin
