I remember my brother & I played this almost religiously. He was more internet inclined when we were kids, and we were going to a wedding, full day thing.
So he told me why we were leaving a VS battle for when we went to this wedding, and when we came back, we unlocked him and were hyyyyyyped.
Unlocking all of the characters is UTTERLY BRUTAL. Huge respect

@@jordandaluz2129if you’re an absolute solo workhorse of Smash melee, You can theoretically unlock all of them in 24 hrs. Assuming you can get everyone aside from Mewtwo and G&W in the 20 hours, You can complete all your other tasks like all the classic modes.
This game came out in 2001 and still looks fantastic.

I loved how you had to do different things for each character. It really made unlocking each character feel like a great accomplishment.
Shame it ended on Smash 4, but hey, it made sense for Ultimate being straight forward I guess

Considering youtube came out early 2005, everyone would've unlocked all the characters by now. So I don't why this video was uploaded . lololol
LOL most characters can be easily unlocked by just playing the game to the fullest. Back in those days beating the game in every mode with all characters was the most natural thing to do and you´d do it for fun. The only secret that was impossible to figure out on our own was Luigi and finishing the 1st stage on second 2.

Back when you'd feel genuine excitement when unlocking a new character. With no access to guides and internet, each unlock felt like a legitimate discovery; and you never really knew when the roster was entirely complete. It wasn't until a few years later when my household first got a computer with internet that my bro and I realised we'd unlocked every character available. Still, those few years of guessing, pondering and in-game exploring were magical.
I agree. My siblings and I just constantly played normal matches and unlocked everyone. Did it for *Melee,* *Brawl* & *Smash 4* too. It's just more fun that way because of the suspense of not knowing who the winner of the match will face.

I love the fact that Luigi and Ganondorf were the one 2 unlockable characters that showed themselves first before their challenger approaching shadows screens.

So many great memories playing Melee with my older brother and sister. I was mostly surprise when unlocking Mewtwo.

Man I remember when Mewtwo came up warning me a new challenger has appeared, my 10 year old heart skipped a beat and all the local kids in our neighborhood I had invited over to play smash were freaking out. All I was thinking was “I have to win this or else I’m a failure for the rest of my life”. Beating Mewtwo was the most rewarding experience of my GameCube experience as a kid. I’ll never forget it.
Absolutely!!!! Mewtwowas my favorite pokemon and I remember the nostalgic memories of when he first appeared in pokemon we had the similar reactions in from my family and friends everyone in my neighborhood too these kids will never know the nostalgia of being a 90s baby

The Mewtwo one was an absolute feat to do back then. I learned later on that it meant 20 COMBINED hours, not necessarily all of them continuously.
Fun fact: this was Marth’s first US appearance. Nobody knew who he was or where he came from at the time. I think the same goes for Roy.
Roy's game was delayed, so he is technically a smash original character

The surge of anxiety and preasure whenever that 'A new foe has appeared' popped on screen. Always caught me off guard and with that alarm going off, I would be so nervous; especially if I couldn't identify the silhouette.

From my experience, the Challenger Approaching screen always gets me excited and pumped up, ready to take on the unlockable character who stands before me while intense music plays in the background.

I really miss unlocking characters like this it encouraged exploring the game and trying out various modes , I understand why they did’t do it in ultimate but still would’ve been cool if they hidden some characters behind specific tasks

Miss doing the challenges to unlock characters, in the new Smash you unlock them really fast and easy. I loved how melee put your skills to the test.
Melee in HD looks amazing.
It's crazy how big of a technological advancement the Gamecube was from the 64. _Melee_ was released just two years after the original game, but looks more like _Ultimate_ (released 17 years afterwards) than it does _Smash 64._

It’s so fun I jus got it this year for my bday from my aunt and I got a new silver gamecube last year for Xmas from her and I had one when I was a kid , I’m 23 now but I ended up selling it when I was like 13 like a idiot. At least I finally got it back 😂

Fun fact: Most kids who played Melee and encountered Marth/Roy had no idea who they were because Fire Emblem was Japan Only at the time of Melee's release. But thise kids were blown away by the music. What a banger!

Awesome video! Almost everytime that a new foe has appeared it creeps me out cause it's hard to expect it.
I remember being young and not knowing much of any character except for the basics unlocking all characters blind, feeling excited when they finally showed up.
The music for the announcement of a new challenger is kind if creepy to me.

Unlocking characters in any game back then was so fun. It’s a completely non-recreatable feeling though, a big part of it was just playing a game and randomly unlocking a character you had no idea was in the game to begin with. The internet and dlc took that away from us
I always liked where Pikachu was placed when you first boot up the game.

When I was younger, I unlocked all the characters in brawl before I did melee, and I was shook that Marth, Ganondorf, and especially Mr. Game and Watch were in melee
A new foe has appeared! Mewtwo and Mr. Game & Watch were HELL to unlock!! And the latter char was quite a surprise!!
I'll never forget those screens with the siren. I also kind of miss how you can tell that for each of the secret characters' silhouettes, they actually made a unique pose for them. This is the only Smash Bros. game to have that detail, they got lazy every following game, as each characters' same one pose is recycled for everything else.
Why does it take at minimum 5 HOURS to unlock mewtwo is beyond me
I miss the unique quotes they have for each character when you unlocked them, but now it's just "this character joins the battle!"

Loved the somewhat realistic feel to this game! For its time it was kinda way ahead
The music in this game was incredible. Everything about this game was incredible when it came out
Believe it or not there was actually a way I unlocked Ganondorf that I will never forget. Basically I had already unlocked Dr. Mario, Jigglypuff, Young Link, Marth, Roy, Pichu and Falco by this point. The first five I unlocked by beating classic mode and Pichu and Falco I unlocked by playing vs matches. However when I went to play Adventure mode for the first time I played as Falco I beaten adventure mode and next thing I knew Ganondorf appeared and I fought him. I don't what triggered it but it an experience with Melee I will never forget.
I believe it, check this out if you have unlocked every character in the game besides mr game and watch and you beat classic mode with the last character you unlocked before mr game and watch, you can then fight and unlock him. They don’t tell you that online but its a 100% legit, I used this method every time I’ve had to.

I remember my friend and I were taking turns fighting Ganon in the mission to unlock him and it was so difficult, because we had to stop Zelda from dying, and at one point, she just straight up jumped and killed herself.

ngl im tearing up since i played this game back in like 2009 and all the memories and the nostalgia from the gameplay and the soundtrack
I remember using the SSBM strategy guide to unlock these characters. I still have it.
I know how to unlock every stage in this game, although 4 stages requires a certain amount of versus matches to played, but I'll just tell you how to unlock them all.
Brinstar Depths - Play 50 vs matches.
Fourside - Play 100 vs matches.
Big Blue - Play 150 vs matches.
Poké Floats - Play 200 vs matches.
Dream Land - Complete Target Test with all characters.
Battlefield - Complete All Star Mode with any character on any difficulty.
Yoshi's Island - Hit 1,350 ft in the Home Run Contest as Yoshi.
Flat Zone - Complete Classic Mode or Adventure Mode without continues as Mr. Game & Watch.
Mushroom Kingdom 2 - Collect the Birdo Trophy.
Kongo Jungle - Survive the 15-minute Melee.
Final Destination - Complete event 51: The Showdown.
Man..I remember leaving my Gamecube on while I went to school and was so excited to see whether Mewtwo could appear or not.
