I remember my brother & I played this almost religiously. He was more internet inclined when we were kids, and we were going to a wedding, full day thing. So he told me why we were leaving a VS battle for when we went to this wedding, and when we came back, we unlocked him and were hyyyyyyped.
I love the fact that Luigi and Ganondorf were the one 2 unlockable characters that showed themselves first before their challenger approaching shadows screens.
@@jordandaluz2129if you’re an absolute solo workhorse of Smash melee, You can theoretically unlock all of them in 24 hrs. Assuming you can get everyone aside from Mewtwo and G&W in the 20 hours, You can complete all your other tasks like all the classic modes.
LOL most characters can be easily unlocked by just playing the game to the fullest. Back in those days beating the game in every mode with all characters was the most natural thing to do and you´d do it for fun. The only secret that was impossible to figure out on our own was Luigi and finishing the 1st stage on second 2.

I remember playing 700 Vs. Matches to unlock mewtwo. All my friends never played the game so I literally ran off the edge with Captain Falcon 700 times.

Man I remember when Mewtwo came up warning me a new challenger has appeared, my 10 year old heart skipped a beat and all the local kids in our neighborhood I had invited over to play smash were freaking out. All I was thinking was “I have to win this or else I’m a failure for the rest of my life”. Beating Mewtwo was the most rewarding experience of my GameCube experience as a kid. I’ll never forget it.
Absolutely!!!! Mewtwowas my favorite pokemon and I remember the nostalgic memories of when he first appeared in pokemon we had the similar reactions in from my family and friends everyone in my neighborhood too these kids will never know the nostalgia of being a 90s baby

I really miss unlocking characters like this it encouraged exploring the game and trying out various modes , I understand why they did’t do it in ultimate but still would’ve been cool if they hidden some characters behind specific tasks
It's crazy how big of a technological advancement the Gamecube was from the 64. _Melee_ was released just two years after the original game, but looks more like _Ultimate_ (released 17 years afterwards) than it does _Smash 64._

I remember being young and not knowing much of any character except for the basics unlocking all characters blind, feeling excited when they finally showed up.
Unlocking every single character with my sister and my best friend that used to live next my nan at the time bring back some memories! The games, the joy, the fights, the laughs and the shock when a new character we didn’t know was even in the game appearing! Now that truly is unlocking to lock memories to then unlock again!
Believe it or not there was actually a way I unlocked Ganondorf that I will never forget. Basically I had already unlocked Dr. Mario, Jigglypuff, Young Link, Marth, Roy, Pichu and Falco by this point. The first five I unlocked by beating classic mode and Pichu and Falco I unlocked by playing vs matches. However when I went to play Adventure mode for the first time I played as Falco I beaten adventure mode and next thing I knew Ganondorf appeared and I fought him. I don't what triggered it but it an experience with Melee I will never forget.
I believe it, check this out if you have unlocked every character in the game besides mr game and watch and you beat classic mode with the last character you unlocked before mr game and watch, you can then fight and unlock him. They don’t tell you that online but its a 100% legit, I used this method every time I’ve had to.

I know how to unlock every stage in this game, although 4 stages requires a certain amount of versus matches to played, but I'll just tell you how to unlock them all. Brinstar Depths - Play 50 vs matches. Fourside - Play 100 vs matches. Big Blue - Play 150 vs matches. Poké Floats - Play 200 vs matches. Dream Land - Complete Target Test with all characters. Battlefield - Complete All Star Mode with any character on any difficulty. Yoshi's Island - Hit 1,350 ft in the Home Run Contest as Yoshi. Flat Zone - Complete Classic Mode or Adventure Mode without continues as Mr. Game & Watch. Mushroom Kingdom 2 - Collect the Birdo Trophy. Kongo Jungle - Survive the 15-minute Melee. Final Destination - Complete event 51: The Showdown.
Back when internet was lame so most things happen "randomly". Also, I like how the silhouette was obscure so you never knew who was challenging. It had more mystery than now where every character is spoiled by the game. 😅
I played this game a lot in my childhood but only after many years I was able to unlock Falco, Pichu, Mewtwo and Mr Game and Watch. It was mind blowing
In hindsight, I can‘t believe I somehow managed to unlock all of them as a kid without a single guide. The Luigi one especially since I do have memories of him showing up in Adventure mode out of the blue. Granted, I adored playing through Adventure Mode a lot so it was only a matter of time. As for Mewtwo… Well, I played a lot of VS matches by myself without any additional players. Besides Luigi and Mr. Game & Watch, I honestly can‘t remember if I unlocked some characters because I played X amount of VS. matches or did the other requirements.
This was my favorite sound as a kid I would always turn the tv volume to the highest when I knew I was going to unlock a character. Very satisfying, don’t know how anyone could be scared of that

I loved how you had to do different things for each character. It really made unlocking each character feel like a great accomplishment.
Shame it ended on Smash 4, but hey, it made sense for Ultimate being straight forward I guess

It’s so fun I jus got it this year for my bday from my aunt and I got a new silver gamecube last year for Xmas from her and I had one when I was a kid , I’m 23 now but I ended up selling it when I was like 13 like a idiot. At least I finally got it back 😂

I actually learned some new ways to unlock all the characters that I unlocked years ago. Never too old to learn!
Believe it or not there was actually a way I unlocked Ganondorf that I will never forget. Basically I had already unlocked Dr. Mario, Jigglypuff, Young Link, Marth, Roy, Pichu and Falco by this point. The first five I unlocked by beating classic mode and Pichu and Falco I unlocked by playing vs matches. However when I went to play Adventure mode for the first time I played as Falco I beaten adventure mode and next thing I knew Ganondorf appeared and I fought him. I don't what triggered it but it an experience with Melee I will never forget.
I believe it, check this out if you have unlocked every character in the game besides mr game and watch and you beat classic mode with the last character you unlocked before mr game and watch, you can then fight and unlock him. They don’t tell you that online but its a 100% legit, I used this method every time I’ve had to.

I wondered where they got the character poses for the "New Foe has Appeared" screens. I always wanted a poster of Luigi in that extremely weird pose for some reason.
Luigi's pose is a reference to one of 64 Luigi's victory animations, if I'm correct.

I know how to unlock every stage in this game, although 4 stages requires a certain amount of versus matches to played, but I'll just tell you how to unlock them all.
Brinstar Depths - Play 50 vs matches.
Fourside - Play 100 vs matches.
Big Blue - Play 150 vs matches.
Poké Floats - Play 200 vs matches.
Dream Land - Complete Target Test with all characters.
Battlefield - Complete All Star Mode with any character on any difficulty.
Yoshi's Island - Hit 1,350 ft in the Home Run Contest as Yoshi.
Flat Zone - Complete Classic Mode or Adventure Mode without continues as Mr. Game & Watch.
Mushroom Kingdom 2 - Collect the Birdo Trophy.
Kongo Jungle - Survive the 15-minute Melee.
Final Destination - Complete event 51: The Showdown.
Back when internet was lame so most things happen "randomly".
Also, I like how the silhouette was obscure so you never knew who was challenging.
It had more mystery than now where every character is spoiled by the game. 😅
I remember using the SSBM strategy guide to unlock these characters. I still have it.

I played this game a lot in my childhood but only after many years I was able to unlock Falco, Pichu, Mewtwo and Mr Game and Watch. It was mind blowing

Sucks that mewtwo had such a high requirement that when I was a kid I had no idea he was even in the game. But that's the beauty of the challenge
In hindsight, I can‘t believe I somehow managed to unlock all of them as a kid without a single guide.
The Luigi one especially since I do have memories of him showing up in Adventure mode out of the blue. Granted, I adored playing through Adventure Mode a lot so it was only a matter of time.
As for Mewtwo… Well, I played a lot of VS matches by myself without any additional players. Besides Luigi and Mr. Game & Watch, I honestly can‘t remember if I unlocked some characters because I played X amount of VS. matches or did the other requirements.

This was my favorite sound as a kid I would always turn the tv volume to the highest when I knew I was going to unlock a character. Very satisfying, don’t know how anyone could be scared of that
