Thank you so much for making this video. I know you mentioned this is a condensed version, but this was still very informative against other information that I've come across so far. So very helpful. I have saved this video and will be reaching out with questions and asking for some local referrals to help us restore the our log home. Thanks, again!

Thanks for the kind feedback. We have passed your comments on to the presenter, Rick Webb at Perma-Chink. Satterwhite can supply you with a Perma-Chink catalog, with full details on Perma-Chink's extensive product line. Call us at 1-800-777-7288. BTW - don't let the Perma-Chink catalog scare you. The range is substantial, but the typical maintenance required by log homes usually only requires a few specific remedies. Of course, some log homes need more attention than others, and sometimes issues get complicated because early detection and treatment did not occur. Satterwhite offers the full range of Perma-Chink products, even those that do not apply to our Dead Standing Timber house logs. Get in contact at the toll free number above and send a few pictures via email and we will be glad to assist.

We barely scratched the surface with Rick's Perma-Chink products. Hopefully we can spend more time with him in the future because Perma-Chink certainly has a comprehensive line of products for log homes, and not just new construction. They know log homes inside and out, all the variances between different building systems and product designs from different manufacturers, and address just about every issue anyone could ever experience over the life of a log home. You would be surprised that many of these issues are not shared by all log homes -- the brand, the building system, and the raw materials determine what you might expect down the road. Satterwhite is very confident of the performance of our materials in your log home, regardless of region or climate, whether during construction, in the short term over the first decades, or long term. Many of the products offered by Perma-Chink are almost never used in Satterwhite homes, but it is nice to know they are out there, and certainly we all benefit from Rick's experience and extensive knowledge.

After new construction application, and you wash, and put on 2 coats stain and a clear coat - after 2-3 years will you clean and re stain or just apply a clear coat?

There is no set interval for reapplication of coating -- it all depends on exposure of the log wall to the elements, particularly UV solar radiation. Satterwhite is careful to discus with each customer how critical it is to make the design fit the property. In other words, in most climates you do not want to have a wood wall unprotected by porches oriented to have full exposure to the sun in a south or west facing direction. That is a worst case scenario for frequent recoating -- the 2 or 3 year interval you mention. But even then, you would only be looking at the top coat, which is essentially a UV sunscreen. In effect, the pigment in the coating system itself protects the wood, while the clear coat is a UV barrier that protects the coating.
The good news is that the clear coat is relatively inexpensive, has great coverage so that not much product is required, and even the labor is not much if you hire it done, so long as other design factors do not enter the picture, like a steep mountain location that required scaffolding. (Not only do Satterwhite porch systems put a multiplier on maintenance intervals, but they also eliminate scaffolding costs in most situations.)
One of our retired salesman had a saying about coatings that is very true: Coatings are like dental care. If you take care of things along, coating maintenance is no big deal. But if you let things go, it can become a big and expensive problem. In most cases, a simple annual wash of the house keeps things looking great, and given good design and siting without problems of solar UV exposure, you can expect to go many years between simple and inexpensive reapplication of clear coats.

Is the process/products and results the same regardless of the type of wood? We plan on using new wood, either white pine or bald cypress. Also how much heartwood do you reccomend having and how do we measure? Thank you!

Different species of wood have different properties. Perma-Chink has developed an extensive line of products that address issues for a spectrum of conditions experienced by log home owners, but not all products are typically applicable to all brands of house logs. Perma-Chink publishes an excellent catalog. You can contact them or Satterwhite for a copy, but please do not be intimidated by the extensive product line. The depth of the product line reassures you that Perma-Chink has solutions for almost any situation, but be assured that - at least speaking for Satterwhite - there are a great many products that addresses issues with various species of wood, but very few of these maintenance issues apply to Satterwhite house logs made from Dead Standing Timber.

This has not been our experience with Perm-Chink at all. In fact, quite the contrary. We are sorry to hear of your bad experience, and could perhaps review your specifics by telephone more completely. Although our records do not indicate you are a Satterwhite customer, we will be glad to assist if you will call 1-800-777-7288 and perhaps supply photos by email.
