Bill trying to stray people from the light. Russell bringing them back
If God wanted to make the commandments mean something else like what Russell said he would've said that. Interpretation is dangerous.
Stand up for something,or fall for anything...
If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?
If you fall, then how can you stand?
what is a woman?
That's ridiculous.
I don't agree with that
Once again, Bill is outclassed by his guest.
Dude I’m not gonna lie bill has totally blown it and seems so smug everytime he does it
This is dope though
It’s come up a lot in my life recently
And first it was the Jewish god
Then the Christians were like
Ok we’re gonna have the same commandment BUT we’re also gonna warship this jew and his names Jesus and *explitive*
Then… idk a lot about Islam
Wonder why *chistians**explitive*
I’m gonna release a box set or maybe a album or something called “Christians on coke”
Good Christians are good people I guess
But it’s also making me wonder
If you are good because of a lie…?
They were not originally called The Ten Commandments, they were called aséret ha-dibrot or literally translated as "the ten words", "the ten sayings", or "the ten matters".
So Russell is right on point
They are not laws but rather a moral scaffolding as well as a description of living a righteous life, within the eyes of God.
It even says later in the Scriptures, if you fall, to get back up again, acknowledging the struggle as flesh bound souls, to actually live up to that structure.
People are so quick to dismiss the wisdom in Scripture. I was one of those people for a long time. I am beginning to understand now though.
Holy Moly. I liked that perspective from Russell.
Reminds me of the adage, "If you don't stand for something, you fall for everything. "
Blessings.
Except he is misinterpreting them. They are pretty straightforward
@@timh8324
Nah, God is a metaphor that we should all strive towards... An ideal. Not a man in the sky holding dominion over humanity. The point is to hold us in control of our own morality. These "rules" are deeper than "lolz u thinkz god is real" or "God is the ultimate answer". These things are centuries of observing human behaviour and accidentally landing on something that bloody works.
@@paulpesci1 have you ever seen a building built by guys just throwing the materials in a pile - no matter how many times you do it it won't work? Anything complicated that we have ever had on the planet has had someone create it. So you are telling me the planet which is infinitely more complicated than anything we could ever do does not have a creator - demonstrate how that works please
@@timh8324
Fundamental Christians and atheists both make the same mistake of taking things too literally. Fact is we don't actually know and much of the Bible is accumulated human knowledge over centuries, parables, myths and stories that give guidance on morality and how to structure society. I'm arguing religion is a good thing. The universe is amazingly complex and we understand much of the mechanisms... But not the origins. This still allows for a "creator" and if you choose to believe that, there's nothing to disprove it.
Congratulations on not missing the point Mr. Brand
Always a pleasure to listen to your peaceful wisdom
Hear hear
The 10 commandments are one hell of a guide to life. Like he said don't kill, don't steal, don't sleep with other people's significant other,be happy with what you have and don't covet others lives, don't lie on folks and listen to your parents.
Do all that and you have the main ingredients of a half decent person.

Russell has a great mind. I think what makes him special is his ability to speak as a philosopher. He really does a great job expressing his passion.
He got this demonic nonsense from Jordan Peterson
Too bad he r worded that chick
Bill sees them as a child would. Russell sees them as a parent .
Bill sees it as it is, Russ reads into the text things that are not there, matter of fact the very 1st commandment completely obliterates Russ's argument lol.. What is it about the text "You shall have no other God's before me." that leaves it up to the interpretation of just pick any God you want and be loyal to it?
1. The translation, especially in the KJV, is sketchy. The KJV was translated at a time when the English had very little contact with the eastern Mediterranean, so to say these "commandments" were perfectly translated is folly, especially where phrases and multipurpose verbs are concerned, such as "you SHALL" vs "you WILL" vs "you WOULD".
2. The way Russel is suggesting to read the Commandments, is to preface with "if you are an enlightened/pious/moral/good person..."
"You wouldnt" worship any other "God" (i.e., whatever your MORAL CENTER is), you wouldnt kill, you wouldnt steal, you wouldnt covet.... because you would have no desire to, temptation couldnt turn you, bwcause you are enlightened and focused on your moral center, your moral compass.
He's saying it's less "edicts" and more a DESCRIPTION of the actions of a moral person.
And in particular he's telling Bill that 1-4 isnt about a jealous God, but about a morally strong person having a moral fortitude, focused on ONE religion, rather than just being blown by any wind and easily tempted into immoral actions.
@TechmoChamp also he spoke on that commandment SPECIFICALLY in this clip, werent you listening?
Its not so much about WHAT you choose as your "god", and more about THAT you choose. With the WHAT part i do disagree with Russel, but i do agree with what he's saying about "one thing is your god, or everything is your god", as in "if you dont stand for something, you'll fall for everything".
Bill has all of his drugs, alcohol and money to assist him in destroying himself.

@@chrismcallister3495
The problem with that is that it implies there was a creator to humanity and the world. There is no express evidence that that is the case. Also it implies that the Abrahamic god is the true creator in the event that there is a creator.
That’s the flaw. The commandments don’t say respect life or the sanctity of life, it says to love the god expressed in the Christian canon without any indication as to why that should be the case.
@@henrylivingstone2971well, there is a very convincing proof that we and the world were created. We are HERE. Now, you can argue about WHAT created them, but the simple fact remains that SOMETHING higher than us created it. Faith calls it God. What ever that higher power is, be it a spiritual one or a cosmocolgical one, the fact remains that it must exist logically. The entirety of existance didnt just pop into reality and start its trillion year journey to me and you chatting on youtube, from NOTHING. Russell got it almost correct. For the most part. this man has come a long way. I have respect for him
If someone gives you an order to do something, or to refrain from doing something, you would probably want to know by what authority he is giving the order. The First Commandment gives that authority. The Second Commandment makes it clear that He is the only authority. The Third Commandment makes it clear that His authority is to be revered and respected. Without those first three commandments, there is no reason to follow the remaining commandments should it become inconvenient to do so.
Very well said 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
THANK YOU. So many miss that point.
"Who are you to say..."
And God points out EXACTLY who He is and why He has the authority to give commandments.
There is still no reason to follow those commandments because there is no proof that the bearer of that "authority" even exists.

@@Babylauncher3000 interesting take. I have abusive parents (my bio dad severely neglected and abandoned me) and my mother is capable of being one of the most mentally abusive women I’ve ever met. As a Mennonite, I view “honouring my parents” as being a good person, being how I know they want me to be and not what they were like. I don’t view the commandment as me having to put up or accept their abuse or sin but rather to be a woman that is kind, giving and loving. That is the way to honour them and their souls. If I continued the cycle of abuse that would be dishonourable not only to myself but also for them. Despite my very abusive childhood I persevered. Without my parents I wouldn’t be on this earth and even though there’s many aspects of my upbringing I don’t agree with I’m not going to let that get in the way of myself or my spiritual guidance.

Interestingly enough, in Hebrew they aren't called commandments. The translation is closer to 'words'. Also,'kill' translates as 'murder' and 'steal' is closer to 'kidnap' - apparently depriving someone of their bodily autonomy is far more heinous than property crimes.
I have heard that comment about "kill" could be translated as "murder." Which was always interesting to me because it would arguably allow for killing in defense, maybe being a soldier, or a state execution. You could think all those are wrong, too, but hard to call them "murder." But then that just helps people justify their actions.

There is a time to kill (as mentioned in Ecclesiastes)
Video might as well be titled “Two people who know nothing of the 10 commandments masquerading as experts on the 10 commandments”
The point of not turning to other gods was avoiding idols. It wasn’t about _”finding your own version of God in love, America, nature”._ It was about knowing the one true God Yahweh and having him alone as the one you worship.
Which is what Maher said. Just Yahweh being jealous.
@@AlexanderShamov well kinda. Maher means “jealously” in a trivial way, suggesting God is irrationally angry, which is not true. The word “jealousy” translated from the original Hebrew was communicating an everlasting partnership.
The context of the Torah involves the Israelites promising on oath to God that they would commit themselves fully to him alone. That’s why the Torah will often use expressions like _“You’ve prostituted yourself to other idols”_ to communicate idolatry within the land. The idea is that the Israelites broke their vow of marriage in their loyalty oath to God alone.
So just as a faithful husband would call out an adulterous wife, God calls out his people that turn to other lovers (idols). It’s not that he’s irrationally angry in jealousy, but that he holds his people accountable for their oath

Why should I follow the Bible when you have to tell me what God was really trying to say in it all the time?
Is it gospel truth or not?
@@zregory It's ok mate I don't believe in that nonsense either but I can still appreciate what he's saying.
The question should be. When did Russel Brand become so enlightened?
Its what happens when you reach and realize human limits and "experience" those limits. You come to the edge and find nothing is beyond it but.... "evil" for lack of a better word, or nothing good. Actually nothing to be exact but empty promises that led you there. Its the classic Icarus story.
Once you get that high or reach the end, fall or not, you start questioning and looking for more than wonton lust and appealing only to your base animal instincts. You start questioning your own fundamental beliefs.
Taking every word literally and applying the modern definition to each will make you blind to the overall texts of the bible or whatnot. Its more about the story, analogy, or general that's meant.
He's basically repeating the age old saying of.. "He who stands for nothing stands for everything" old ideas but people somehow don't want to accept them.
*He who stands for nothing falls for anything
There’s no such thing as a new idea, my friend. Especially in a religious context.
@@The-Rest-of-Us
I thought it was He who stands for everything stands for nothing.
@@dsavereideif you STAND for nothing, you FALL for everything.
We need our own moral code
@@dsavereide It is a quote from Alexander Hamilton. Look it up sometime, 1/2 of the movies made in hollywood have this theme in it.
You truly have found God Mr Brand😊🙏 God is with you 🙏
MY BOY RUSSELL HAS AN AMAZING SENSE OF ANALYTICAL COMPREHENSION…I MEAN AMAZING! A MAN RIVALED BY FEW🫵🏻😎🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶
brands speech on maher about media and politics was epic
Perfect explanation. Russell is a beautiful man
It's not an explanation, but an interpretation. It's a nice one, but strays far from how religious people see it. "Lust" e.g. is one of the Seven Deadly Sins in Christianity.
The idea Russel proposes reminds me more of the Oracle of Delphi's "gnothi seauton".
Interesting take but I don't think that is correct. I don't think God meant "your own god," He meant God, meaning no false gods such as love or nature or America. I think those fall under "anything can be a god."
I love your part of this interview where you get so fired up about corruption
Wait. Brand is saying “Unless you find your god, which could be anything, then anything could be your god.”
Man, I love Russell!
Right on Russell. Your the man of Truth.
Fun fact. The Hebrew ‘commandment’ is also used as ‘word’ or ‘message’
"Commandments" is a deliberate translation.
Thats actually a really profound way to put it
