  • Hello The Way We Wore Fans,
Are you looking for something to savor? Well, in this video Doris showcases her personal collection of Lame garments, fabrics, trims, and embellishments. This ultra luxe fabric was used heavily for garments in the early 20th century, utilizing metals that are then woven in with silks, cotton, linen, and other fibers to create a dazzling fabric that was the ultimate in status and prestige. Couturiers like Poriet, Lanvin, Chanel, and more designed gowns that shimmered from the lame fabric. Prior to the 20th century, what was known as “the cloth of gold,” was a fabric only worn by royalty. There was even a law in England that restricted who could actually wear garments with gold woven into the textile. Early materials of gold and silver were know as assiut in Egypt and the Middle East, which was metal embroidery sewn on tulle. The history of metals used in fabrics stretches centuries all the way to ancient times. The beauty of studying textiles shows how societies and generations lived and utilized materials and how trades and artisans were created. We hope you enjoy this episode.

Love love love! This episode, I have had a secret passion for lamè since I was a child, getting lost in the seamstresses house :) My grandmother remarried and had a beautiful Edwardian? I'm going to say style dress that she had altered for her wedding day and it had the most beautiful two tone lamè. She just passed away this week and I would love to have her dress but I have several aunts who I'm sure one of them will claim it.
I was lucky enough to have dressess made for me by a seamstress when I was young but I was aware that none of my friends had that experience. They got all their dresses from department stores. It was a dying trend definitely but really got me into appreciation for fashion and the process of making wonderful things from fabric and thread.
Glad to see you are looking so much brighter and happier Doris, I look forward to these episodes so much. So Thank you so much for sharing!

Doris my fascination with lame started as a child. I grew up in Australia in the biggest tourist hot spot in the country back then called Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast. The council brought in paid parking via parking metres in the mid 1960s. Local businesses got together to figure out how to get around this problem so they employed beautiful young women, put them in gold lame bikinis & gave them each a bucket of 6 pence coins and they would walk around town in twos putting the coins in the parking metres & topping them up. It would never fly today of course but those girls looked so glamorous when I was small. 😂 and the business owners were happy, the girls were happy- they became nationally famous initially and then icons, the tourists were happy because they didn’t have to worry about a fine & the council was sort of happy. So gold lame = glamour & happy to me.
