Greg. Good info as usual. Here’s my question I want to get an M2 Pro with 32 gig memory because it seems like it’s a little better for most of my creative work. Is there really a difference if I get the MacBook Pro and just plug it in all the time in my studio and then travel or getting the Mac mini with the same configuration lay really get any better like performance from the mini versus the laptop. Thanks in advance.

I also outfitted it with a Sabrent Thunderbolt enclosure with a Samsung 2tb SSD. The difference in editing video(FCPX) was apparent instantly. I couldn’t be happier plus I like the new toy.

My set up is full apple. Studio display base version, with the base version Mac mini M1 with 512 storage and the white out keybaord track pad and Magic Mouse. I LOVEE my set up. The base Mac mini is a damn beast for 99 percent of people I would say, I use it running 3 to 4 apps at the same time with safari holding up to 14 tabs at once and the ram management is amazing because even a day later the windows in safari don't refresh or reload which blows my mind. I'm a light to medium user so for me its way more power then I need, but i'm slowly getting into photograph and video editing so lets see if this can handle it.

The software that I run on my M1 Mini appears to be limited by the speed of the Neural Engine, not the CPU nor GPU. I think the NE is 30% faster on any model of M2. I'm not sure if 30% is enough for me to justify buying an M2. But I suspect that an M3 Mac will be at least another 30% faster on top of that. So I'll probably wait for that.

Currently, I still use my MacBk Pro 2013 model though it is certainly straining when I use it for online teaching (which we are still doing in China to some extent). I know that spec for spec, this machine will blow the socks off of my old device. You mention music creation in you r video - that’s what I really want one of these machines for. When I get one it will have to have 32GB RAM cos I use Sample based plug-ins and stuff. Basically, the more RAM you can throw at your machine the better.
I was planning on getting a Mac Studio with 64GB RAM but looking at this I wonder if that is necessary - especially as I counting the cost at present.

My 2012 27 inch iMac is obsolete. I'm planning on moving to 4K Premiere video editing for what are basically uncomplicated videos. That trend that started from back in the day at school has to break soon. Keep trying.

Seems highy unlikely that a 7000dollar mac studio config vs mac mini pro, is not noticably faster for you.. technically it's not even possible. faster = faster, no matter what. the studio wins easily (if it's truely maxed out: more cores, more ram, etc)
Secondly that hdmi port is not very important these days: most modern displays use display port for the best option. And modern computers support that (either via thunderbolt, or straight dp from the machine)
Thirdly, as for the pro market: the apple mac mini pro is not under 1500 dollars, it's above. Because pro's will not buy the base model, they will upgrade: 32GB ram, 1TB drive, and most will also add the extra cores. Because you cannot switch later on. Also they will add a "dock" for additonal ports, which they need (like you e.g. have), for thumbdrives, dongles and other things.
