This song is a perfect example of the brilliance of Rory's songwriting. In this instance, his lyrics, with their candid simplicity, actually serve as a backdrop to the soul-stirring music instead of the other way around. IMO, no other guitarist could evoke such passion and emotion from their playing as Rory did. You simply could not separate the man from the music and the connection that pulls the listener into the moment with him. I love that you truly felt this song - a great reaction. Suggest you react to the Irish Tour '74 album (audio) version of Walk On Hot Coals, it's a tour de force. Also there's a live audio version of Just The Smile (from the John Peel Sunday Concert, '71) that you might enjoy, it's a sublime acoustic guitar journey. Anyway, thanks, Alan, and please keep on...

I really think this is one of Rory's most personal songs and it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Rory suffered from depression most of his life, and I think this encapsulates that feeling of being alone regardless of the press of people around you. Thank you for this reaction Alan. I appreciate that you looked past the surface of the lyrics for the deeper meaning behind them.

Hi Dawn , this song will touch many , ( as it did me) it’s a layered song but the journey is one of contrasts ( as you know ) it really did bring home some very personal realities and that’s the sign of great music 😊👍

Rory was incredible.I love all his Blues stuff but still think Stage Struck is one of the best live rock albums of all time. Seeing him live at the Town and Country club in Kentish Town still one of the best gigs i ever seen. Great review, thanks Stu.

Another great Rory reaction! As good as this is, you have to listen to the track on the live Irish Tour album to get the full experience, and the whole song, you can hear the crowd keeping time all the way through which just adds to the atmosphere. This video is from a documentary film and interesting as it is, the editing is somewhat questionable - they managed to lose a whole verse of the song - 'There's a song on the lips of everybody.....'.
P.S. what you were saying about London, or any big city made me think of Rory's 'Kickback City', from his 1987 Defender album, which could be about just that, and possibly also his feelings about the music industry, given that he'd had to set up his own record label having had potential record deals fall through at the last minute since completing his contract with Chrysalis in 1982. That must have been quite a stressful period for him.

! I didn’t realise there was a whole verse missing ? Knowing that I feel I’ve been cheated out of the true and full emotional weight of the song 🥲 however I’m making lists of every track that I’m being told to pay attention to and I’m so looking Forward to the year or more of absorbing ( reacting ) to come .. I’ve got some ideas of things I might do for the absolute best artists so hopefully I can develop that and let you guys decide ?

@@alan-reacts65 How do you feel about reacting to interviews? Might be interesting for people who don't know much about an artist. I mean for Rory there are some good interviews with the man himself, and also with other artists like Brian May (Queen) and Alex Lifeson (Rush) talking about Rory as a musician, and also as a person, and what they learned from him. Just an idea.

Hi Alan. You should have a listen to 'Could,ve had Religion' live at the Marquee club London.it,s a real blues classic. At times in it Rory appears to be in the extasy of a religious visionary. At the time Dylan regarded it as one of his favourite songs. At around 4.20 he shows off another talent. Mongolian throat singing.

I’m going to be honest ,, unless I know from having heard the song before thiers only so much I can do 🥹
