If I ever get to see the Stoltz footage I will die happy. I love the BTTF we got, but the curiosity is just too great. Ever since they released what little we got my mind has just buzzed with wonder of what could be. I need to see it!
Love how in the Premier Interview Barry Norman says "Eventually" about Fox taking over from Stoltz. Barry was the son of a film director and had close friends in the industry. So seems he'd heard about BTTF shooting with Stoltz for a long part of the shoot. Even Zemeckis's friend and business partner, Joel Silver would say in 1993 that they all shot ALL of BTTF with Stoltz.
No, they didn't shot any of the scenes with Jennifer which was supposed to be played by Melora Hardin. But when they recasted Fox as Marty they also changed Jennifer actress because Hardin was too tall compared to Fox. I think half or about 2/3 of the movie was finished with Stoltz as Marty.
@@solidsnake3828 Not according to Joel Silver. He talked quite casually about it in an interview in 93, and he'd been friends with Zemeckis for some time at that point . After this interview they became Business Partners. He says they got to the last week of shooting before seeing their mistake with Stoltz. These are very specific things to say.
Yeah that's pretty much what I suspected with the possible exception of the ending which Stoltz objected to and arguably the worst part of the movie. I suspect Stoltz was a little more than simply a part. I have a suspicion he made Marty work with the script in a way that is still a part of the film. He clearly added dramatic effect. I think that's painfully clear. He made the movie much better. Certainly Fox made the part his own but only as a sidenote to how Stoltz created the part. It seems pretty clear the part was mostly Stoltz. Only partly Fox.
@@incognoscente Interesting you should make that connection. I heard a suggestion that Zemeckis and Gale saw an early cut or Dailies of Weird Science and they had a revelation to the tone they should have been going for with their fantasy teen movie. That is serious wouldn't sell as well and they should lean more into comedy. Stoltz was unable or unwilling to do that.
Back to the future is probably my favorite movie of all time and Michael is perfect casting obviously, but I wouldn't mind watching the stoltz version with the seriousness he wanted to bring
Minty - this is, by far, my favorite video you have ever created. I graduated high school in 1985 - and this is probably the ultimate 1980s movie as it links 80s kids with their parents who grew up in the 1950s. I've always wondered about the Eric Stoltz footage and story so thanks for doing the research! You should do more videos like this: the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2 would be a good example. Thanks, man! Minty Rules!
Yeah - Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2 is a totally different film! Not as good, I don't think, but it still worked - and fit very well with the first part to make the story complete. But definitely worth seeing! 🙂
I'd love to see a cut of the movie with just Stoltz. It wouldn't be complete, but this would be a very interesting "what if?" opportunity that doesn't happen that often.
Great critique of BTTF. Love the additional trivia you give us about different movies. It really shows you did your research and how much you love movies. Keep it up!
Ironically, we had this movie on Betamax® (which was “pirated”by renting it, hooking up two VCRs with audio/video cables and recording it. It was very technical and complicated, I know. 😆😆) Minty, I love your passion, brother! Congrats on the success of your channel! 🥳
I think I heard in an interview that the nuclear blast actually lasted into drafts of the script which used the DeLorean. It was the budget that forced them to rewrite it to use the clock tower. Bob Gale said that it was one of those situations where the restrictions on them actually served to make a better movie since it put the courthouse at the center of the story.
The last time I looked into the Stoltz replacement story a few years ago, the reigning theory at that point was roughly 80% of the movie had been shot when they brought Fox in.
Probably closer to 90% would be my guess. I suspect they shot nearly all of it with Stoltz fully knowing they would substitute Michael J. Fox. I suspect that because there is ample evidence of that having been the case. Plus I think they were close to wrapping it as far as principal photography. Meaning Michael J Fox was likely substituted for Stoltz.
@@incognoscente I'm not saying it was done to replace Stoltz. I think it was intentional. I recently saw the film again and it was apparent Fox was superimposed upon Stoltz. Even then they were able to deep fake (not sure what else to call it) the actor into the movie without having to do a retake. The scenes were, I think the ones that had dramatic effect. Like Fox taking a swing at Tannen and even the ending. Except for the scenes that included Claudia Wells. Those were retakes. We don't really have to guess what the end result would be. We have it! They used Stoltz and substituted Fox. Probably intentionally. It made a good movie but I think it might constitute misuse of an actors interpretation of a movie role since Stoltz obviously made the part his own. The skate chase scene has Stoltz acting the part of a double. The last scene showing Fox at home probably wasn't a retake. It was the part Stoltz liked the least and it's my least favorite part of the movie, too.
I think thats why this movie turned out so epic because filming so much of the movie with Stoltz was a sorta rough draft. Re filming scenes a second time they knew exactly what they wanted. LIke anything in life repeating things naturally gets better, tighter more thought out essentially.
I think they were very very smart to go with the more humous version because Michael J Fox IS the perfect casting for Marty. The darker version with Eric, just seems too depressing.
I am waiting to see the "10 Things You Didn't Know About Minty" video. As far as BTF goes, you can see bags under Biff's eyes in the diner scene except for that quick clip of when he gets punched because that was shot several weeks earlier when the actors weren't as tired.
Yes I would like to see the un released footage with Eric Stoltz with Audio to compare the movies, but I still couldn't see anyone else playing Marty Mcfly but Michael J. Fox!! Great job again Mr. Minty!!
It could break box office records. I saw the first one in the theater when I was 4. One of my favorite movies, BUT I think the Stoltz cut is gonna have staying power; should be a really fun movie to watch if they ever release it.
Nice one! FWIW, there's a nice nod to Eric Stoltz in an episode of Fringe, where in an alternate version of 1985, characters are seen exiting a movie theater after a showing of BTTF with Stoltz listed on the marquee as the star of the movie! 🙂
This one's gonna get big views. Not many videos go deep on the details about the Stoltz-Fox swap, that I know of. And yes, you get clever points for thinking out of the box with an unreleased film.
If you were born prior to 1980 how can you NOT get emotional about this film? Also the Pt. 3 was filmed near my property and last year we attended an outdoor screening of pt. 3 with a large screen designed like the screen in the movie and with an freakin Delorean that my grandson and I fought over. I was so mad that day because I was given a number to call re: the screening and a quiet gentleman answered. We spoke and I thanked him for his time. Upon hanging up I Fyking realized he answered the phone by identifying himself, "Hello this is Bob Gale". I had so many questions and comments I could've addressed but then again i wouldn't want to have taken his time up.
You can watch the storyboards of the alternate nuclear plant ending on the Blu-ray special features. Budget constraints were another reason they reworked the ending to be in the Hill Valley Town Square, which works much better anyway.
I'm sure something will happen in the future. I keep thinking of the Richard Donner cut, when it came to Superman 2, released some time after the cinematic release. It may not have been completely finished but it did offer some interesting insight, what could have been etc
My GOD I can't put into words how happy I am that during the Stoltz portion of this video, you've SERIOUSLY lowered thw volume of that damn HAUNTING background "music" from B2TF: The NES Game ...
There is also a comic book called Back to Back to the Future where they go back in time to try and prevent Eric Stoltz been replaiced with Michael J. Fox. It's a six parter comic book series.
As a kid i remember being wowed with his alternate life, got the girl, the car, new happier cooler parents. But as an adult i can see how this could be sad, would have been interesting to see the end be more intense and emotional.
I believe that was Stoltz objection and possibly why he was fired, he objected to the ending maybe even objected to the theme of it probably so it could be rewritten and it isn't exactly clear what the message is.
Back To The Future is one of my favorite movies in my top 5. This movie along with MIB I have rewatched like 20 plus times. I friggin love them. With all that said geez I had no dang clue there was a lost version!! This will be a real treat to watch!
At least with the BTTF franchise, if they decide to do remakes, they can market them as being alternate timeline realities, to avoid alienating fans. Just as long as they add some sort of additional title note, so we know what's going on in what series, I'd think that it could be possible to see more exploration on the idea of time travel, perhaps from different eras as starting points.
As an 80s teen, I like both Eric and Michael and had a crush on Eric LOL. I do feel for Eric since it was obvious that he was replaced after shooting quite a lot of scenes already. That would have been a big blow to his ego.
Me and my 12 year old just spent 20 minutes trying to identify every piece of pop culture in Minty's studio. I was only stumped by the red sunglasses... unsure of what this was referencing. And my son was impressed I could identify ALF by his feet. Great video, it really makes the lost version come alive. I've often wondered why no fan has tried to use the original script to make this version of BTTF. I mean as a fan film, not something they'd be sued out of existence for.
I'm an absolute back to the future nut. Most of these videos tell me nothing that I haven't already heard in over 30 years...This video actually suprised me! while I knew of the video piracy thing, I did not know John Crier auditioned, the "close encounters" guitar thing,or that the time machine originally ran on coca cola. I knew Marty was supposed to seem more like a "badass" but most videos don't make it entirely as clear as this video. Or the version of the script where he stayed at lorraines house, the futuristic changes when her returned to 85', the deletion of rock and roll...wow! Pretty neat! Very good video! I guess I need to read the original scripts!
It would be cool if they released the Eric Stotlz version, I bet they filmed most of the movie with Stotlz. The could release it as something like Back to the Future: Alternate Timeline.
The Eric stoltz version seems very interesting, the darker 80’s time travel vibes. His Marty doesn’t dress with bright colors like Fox’s, since he played the role more serious.
Minty, you'll be surprised to know that Doc Bown was a ghostbuster in 1990! Doc can be seen holding a proton pack gun shooting the Stay Puft Marsmallow Man at Universal Studios Florida commercial LOL!🤔👻🔫☃
I would actually really love to see the Stoltz film. It would be a really respectful way to re-make the film and they could do like a he meets himself in the future at the end and bam new good BTTF PT2
My headcanon is that there was an earlier, so far unseen timeline in Back to the Future, where Marty, who in this timeline bears a striking resemblance to actor Eric Stoltz, uses Doc's DeLorean to travel back to 1955, but fails to get his parents together when he accidentally interferes with history, and is erased from existence. The ensuing paradox results in time shifting back and forth between two timelines, one with Marty and the one where he's been erased, centered around Hill Valley and the effected period of time. Ultimately this causes wear on the space-time continuum, like someone pacing on the same stretch of carpet; and the effected space-time begins to distort, causing additional variations in history, which further distorts space-time. Left unchecked, space and time would collapse around the effected area. But as it should happen, one of the new timelines produces a version of Marty who, thought he goes back in time endangers his own conception, actually manages to get his parents together and insures his existence; creating a stable paradox and a segment of space-time that's actually stronger against tampering for it. This is partly the reason Marty and Doc aren't immediately affected by the Hell-Valley timeline Old Biff creates, because those changes would undermine the stable paradox they previously created.
I do too. And I think that Alan Silvestri even scored the scenes with Stoltz. I say this, because on the second disc of the first release of the original soundtrack from Intrada, there are earlier recordings of the soundtrack, and they have more of an edge to the sound of the music, as well as a bigger orchestra.
@@aztecwarrior9511 well, if it had come out at the time, I would say Danger Zone. However, since Top Gun had not come out yet, I would say Michael Jackson's Beat It might work.
It would certainly be interesting but as the Stoltz version was never completed it would be a bit of a mash-up, kind of like the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2, which also hadn't been completed before he was sacked and another director took over .
@trevor brown true. Even if we got only half a movie, i feel like it would be worth the watch. Being able to see a beloved movie in this way is so rare. I would also like to see the lost version of Event Horizon as well.
They probably would have to recut it and it might have a different result since Stoltz didn't like the ending. He thought it was too happy-go-lucky. He thought it should be more serious in tone.
@@josh72456 just the ending. Because he returns to a different future and the ending was pathetic if you want my opinion. Easily the worst part of the movie. Biff being some kind of waxing car detail seems preposterous to me. Maybe a mechanic or maybe salesman or whatever it was he thought important. I guess the part about his dad writing a novel was o.k. It was strange either of his siblings would be there. Wendy Jo Sperber died. Stoltz didn't like the ending. He probably would have insisted on a rewrite and so they shit canned him that's the only part of the movie he wasn't a participant to. And it sucked. It nearly ruined the movie.
6:51 What amazed me about those piracy adverts in the early 2000's was just how fast they thought you could download a feature length movie over a 56k modem link....just see how fast the blue progress bars flies! It's like Marty came back from the future and plugged her into full fibre broadband!

BttF was certainly one of the first movies that prompted us all to bootleg on weekends; the studios own greedy fault for making the movies way too expensive to buy on VHS at the time. Wasn't until Batman 1989 had a $30 release after the cinema run concluded, that the fuckwits conceded to public demand and reduced pricing.
I have a feeling the Time Machine being powered by Coke was because originally Back to Future was supposed to be a Columbia film and Columbia was owned by Coke Cola at the time. I mean they even made a movie called the Coke Cola Kid while they owned Columbia, so yeah they wanted product placement.
You should definitely do 10 things about any which way but loose and any which way you can. That would be very interesting. Still waiting for the 1985 fortress and Jacob's-ladder can't find it to watch it
I still would have liked to have seen the Eric Stolz version of the movie. It would have been cool to have released an extended version where Stolz would have been a parallel universe version of Marty and it was a darker version.
The Stoltz version could line up perfectly with a "90's nostalgia kick" if we get one. Maybe once Peak Tech rolls over soon.... Stoltz is a time traveler from the 90's (and a big Matrix buff) and goes back in time to the '80's to film a movie about the 50's.
He was overly image conscious, he has removed himself from the credits of a few of his early movies. He plays the main character in Surf II for example yet only recently does his name show up connected to it.
With the recent advances in A.I image generating, it's only a matter of time before we can watch a more serious version of Back To The Future with Eric Stoltz and a refrigerator time machine
@@robertodell9193 : I totally agree, that refrigerator travel machine is just stupid (especially when run on Coke). Kids would have tried it and too many kids in the past, lost their life due to suffocation in fridges and freezers.

@@davidjames579 Also, Joel Silver was working on Weird Science for Universal when the Stoltz version of BTTF was being filmed.
"This begs to ask the question." Never change, Minty. We love you.
I think it's mostly complete. The only thing missing would be 1985 high school scenes.
Great critique of BTTF. Love the additional trivia you give us about different movies. It really shows you did your research and how much you love movies. Keep it up!
Your Doc impression is spot on Minty! 😁
Ironically, we had this movie on Betamax® (which was “pirated”by renting it, hooking up two VCRs with audio/video cables and recording it. It was very technical and complicated, I know. 😆😆)
Minty, I love your passion, brother!
It’s crazy 30 years later and we can’t come close to making movies as good as back to future. Computers has ruined art. Movies music etc
Bang on Glenn. Too much CGI has made movie watching for me unenjoyable. It looks ridiculous to me. 😂BTTF is amazing.
The last time I looked into the Stoltz replacement story a few years ago, the reigning theory at that point was roughly 80% of the movie had been shot when they brought Fox in.
Yeah. The mayorty of the footage and images show practically all of the movie except the dance and the clock tower scene.
@@charlesedward5047 Ooh in this vid they show a still from the clock tower setup scene
@@christopherfoote4643 Well, Tom Wilson did say: "We were pretty much done."
But how would Stoltz have known that they wanted Fox from the get-go?
Can never have too many Back to the Future videos.
I like to imagine theres an alternate universe where Eric Stoltz took over from Michael J Fox, and its the cannon version.
Marty: “I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it”
The domino effect: “Like hell they will.“
I am waiting to see the "10 Things You Didn't Know About Minty" video.
Minty!!
I hope someday the Eric Stolz more serious darker version of Back to the Future gets released. I’d be interested to watch it.
It could break box office records. I saw the first one in the theater when I was 4. One of my favorite movies, BUT I think the Stoltz cut is gonna have staying power; should be a really fun movie to watch if they ever release it.
Nice touch using the BTTF NES game music in parts of the video
Nice one! FWIW, there's a nice nod to Eric Stoltz in an episode of Fringe, where in an alternate version of 1985, characters are seen exiting a movie theater after a showing of BTTF with Stoltz listed on the marquee as the star of the movie! 🙂
I remember that. That wasn't the only movie with an alternate cast mentioned in the show, either.
I believe they had it in the Flash movie too.
amazing as always minty, loved the Doc impression too
This one's gonna get big views. Not many videos go deep on the details about the Stoltz-Fox swap, that I know of. And yes, you get clever points for thinking out of the box with an unreleased film.
Great Scot!!! The original version would've been crap. So glad more insightful heads prevailed. Great video. Really well put together.
Definitely wouldn't have survived as a cult classic movie if they kept the refrigerator
Thanks for the new information Minty, I learned a few new things about BTTF. That was pretty heavy!!
Great Scott!
Simply put just a great movie from beginning to end
THANK YOU!!! I’m 40, and absolutely in love with the trilogy. But this is amazing!! Thank you!!!! ❤
Minty you brought me back. Almost forgot about the copy warning on vhs tapes. Your channel is great keep up the good work.
The films are an absolute masterpiece that should never be remade or rebooted.
@Test Pilot Ian it has though.
@@josh72456 what remake?
@@andrewmorris4628 It was adapted into a musical production.
Minty's Doc Brown impersonation was the funniest part in the history of this channel
I am surprised that there are more trivias emerging every year about this amazing trilogy.
You can watch the storyboards of the alternate nuclear plant ending on the Blu-ray special features. Budget constraints were another reason they reworked the ending to be in the Hill Valley Town Square, which works much better anyway.
Absolutely perfect movie and should NEVER be rebooted
Fantastic video Minty! Some of the set pics of Stoltz I had never seen before so it was cool you showed them. Great work!
I want to see the serious version with Eric Stoltz.
same
+1!
me too ha ha
Presumably, that version ends with Stoltz and Glover getting into an uncomfortably long stare-off as each attempts to out "quiet intensity" the other.
Interesting!
yup it's still online and in PDF format.
Videos are always awesome. I’ve been watching your stuff for years.😊
As a kid i remember being wowed with his alternate life, got the girl, the car, new happier cooler parents.
A legend movie grew up watching these as a kid on VHS
Thank you for making this recap! Never knew any of this!
What we got is a perfect movie. One of the absolute all time greatest films
Interesting timing of the upload of this video, as I recently saw the Back to the Future musical in London, which was fantastic.
I love Michael J Fox as Marty but to be honest Im very curious to see the Stoltz version just to see what kind of a film it would of been with him.
It looked too me like Eric Stolts played more dramatic as even the cinematography and the direction was shot too do so? The lighting as well.
I would love to see the full Eric Stoltz footage released some day.
Changed Lorraine name cause the studio head is married to Lorraine Gary
It would be cool if they released the Eric Stotlz version, I bet they filmed most of the movie with Stotlz. The could release it as something like Back to the Future: Alternate Timeline.
Minty you do a great doc brown impression!!! I was listening saying 'Holy crap he sounds like him."
If Back to the Future was released today Marty would return to 1992
That's crazy to think about
And to think I’ve been trying to build a Time Machine to go back to 1992.
And would’ve returned to 1952 in the Third movie
good old times...
I was born in 1993
I'm old!
Lol!
I didn't know any of these. Thank you. This was an awesome video. I didn't fast forward once!
The 80's were the best years to live through. Especially as a teenager!
Good I miss the 80s.
come back 80s; all is forgiven....
@firebythewater I doubt that there is nostalgia towards it definitely.
Six minutes in and this is the best Minty review ever.
The Eric stoltz version seems very interesting, the darker 80’s time travel vibes. His Marty doesn’t dress with bright colors like Fox’s, since he played the role more serious.
If they release the Stoltz version IN THEATERS at exactly the right time, watch Stoltz get an Academy Award.
This is one of the rare few movies thats perfect in every way and can never be remade.... Ever!!!
It is well known that the screenplay is considered the best ever written and is commonly used to teach screen writers in college classes! 😎
This is partly the reason Marty and Doc aren't immediately affected by the Hell-Valley timeline Old Biff creates, because those changes would undermine the stable paradox they previously created.
theories like this make my brain implode; too much thinking required....
I definitely want to see the Eric stolt's version so badly!
I do too. And I think that Alan Silvestri even scored the scenes with Stoltz. I say this, because on the second disc of the first release of the original soundtrack from Intrada, there are earlier recordings of the soundtrack, and they have more of an edge to the sound of the music, as well as a bigger orchestra.
@@garrettbays6942 what song you think fits eric you think?
Everything happens for a reason. They made the right choice.
As much as I have enjoyed the back to the future franchise over the years, I’d love to see the Eric Stoltz version.
I can do without it.
@No more lies it wouldn’t be a complete film though.
They probably would have to recut it and it might have a different result since Stoltz didn't like the ending. He thought it was too happy-go-lucky. He thought it should be more serious in tone.
@@christopherfoote4643 Lea Thompson claims he found it tragic.
It nearly ruined the movie.
so, you went back in time and changed the future, by showing us a thing from the past, with new stuff and, GREAT SCOTT, it's 1.21 gigawatts!
6:51 What amazed me about those piracy adverts in the early 2000's was just how fast they thought you could download a feature length movie over a 56k modem link....just see how fast the blue progress bars flies! It's like Marty came back from the future and plugged her into full fibre broadband!
And, Stoltz looks like a Matrix-inspired pirated movie downloader from the (late) nineties. Stoltz actually nailed the part. lol
It's great that you can take time off from your chemotherapy to make these videos. You are an inspiration.
I think George as a boxer would have been cool to have in the movie. On another note, I would love to see all of the Eric Stoltz footage. Another awesome video. Thanks Minty!
*Going into my DVD archive, thanks for making up my choice of what to watch this weekend.* 📀
This is great.. thank you for a look into this,, i had no idea and i love BTTF.. especially 1 and 2.. watched and rewound the 'pirated' VHS copies my uncle had made hundreds of times my 90s youth.. (even if they all looked a bit orange in the copy's tracking lol)
BttF was certainly one of the first movies that prompted us all to bootleg on weekends; the studios own greedy fault for making the movies way too expensive to buy on VHS at the time. Wasn't until Batman 1989 had a $30 release after the cinema run concluded, that the fuckwits conceded to public demand and reduced pricing.
it's videos like these that makes me glad i found this channel.
Still waiting for the 1985 fortress and Jacob's-ladder can't find it to watch it
minty my dude, i have to say, your doc impression was awesome.
Michael J. Fox looked like a kid during his entire acting career!! Didn’t realize how good he actually was until way later..
Eric Stoltz could not take direction, disagreed with parts of the script and challenged the director Robert Zemeckis. Not good.
He was overly image conscious, he has removed himself from the credits of a few of his early movies.
He plays the main character in Surf II for example yet only recently does his name show up connected to it.
"not good" lol
I just watched BTTF 2 and 3 on Wednesday, first time in over 25 years. I'm absolutely in the mood for this
With the recent advances in A.I image generating, it's only a matter of time before we can watch a more serious version of Back To The Future with Eric Stoltz and a refrigerator time machine
I think you can leave out the refrigerator.
@@robertodell9193 : I totally agree, that refrigerator travel machine is just stupid (especially when run on Coke). Kids would have tried it and too many kids in the past, lost their life due to suffocation in fridges and freezers.
