Apart from sunscreen I know you are an advocate for using a good moisturizer; and therefore I’m now torn by the conflicting views on same. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on ZO skin health.
Dr. Dray, thank you for addressing the moisturizer concern. I have had dermatologists caution me to stop using moisturizers. This idea has been widespread through the recommendation of Dr. Zein Obagi, M.D., a Beverly Hills-based dermatologist who has his own skincare line. Dr. Obagi believes skin gets addicted to replacement moisture and stops supplying its own hydration from within the body, and your natural hydration, he says, is what really keeps skin healthy and young. I have been trying to find the scientific explanation supporting this. Being someone who uses tretonoin, it was difficult to give up moisturizing my skin. Thank you for clearing this up!

This is why I prefer dermatologist advice to aestheticians. I mean extractions are awesome but they give all this fancy exaggerated tips and persuade you to buy their companies own line..
Yup. I guess I get it because aesthetics are about cosmetics so they never really have any good advice about treating problematic skin, only about enhancing already “normal” skin. As someone who’s has acne all their life, I think some of these masks and treatments out here are so stupid... they always talk about “detox” and “lymphatic drainage” but I don’t even think they know what that means lol
Depends on the esthetician you go to. I’ve gone to medical estheticians before and they are up to date on the medical literature without charging dermatologist fees.
C L Not always. I’m an esthetician and I don’t know anything about makeup. I literally know nothing about it unless it’s on myself. But I can treat acne prone skin or sun spots.
Morgan Miller Hi!! There definitely are more experienced estheticians, I was just speaking to the trends nowadays wherein most don’t know how to work with problematic skin. And imo, even then, estheticians who treat acne prone skin should still be following medical advice esp. if the client deals with cystic acne.
I cant thank you enough for your videos. I have always had scaly scalp even with regular shampoo use, and I used to lose huge balls of hair when combing, and I thought it was normal because I have very curly, thick hair. I tried the zinc pyrithione shampoo you mentioned a while ago and today I have no dandruff and only a few shed hairs(like 97% reduction) it is unbelievable what a piece of a well informed advice can do. THANK YOU. You have helped me so much. I wanna give you a hug.
Hi Dr Dray! How is your mom doing? Have you done a video with an update? If you have and I missed it can you refer a link? I’ve been thinking about her and hoping she’s doing well. ❤️
If skin doesn’t get “used to ingredients”....why do we need to start retinal very slowly and gradually move up to higher strengths? Not being obnoxious just curious.
I think its bc retinol can be very sensitizing to your skin, so to get to the level is recommended to you, you need to start slow so your skin won't react badly to it
@@bluessarah2208 Also because not everyone would need it daily, every other day, etc. "Start slow and go low" is the term used a lot to find the sweet spot for individuals with medicines/treatments. If you start at the top and it's too much for your skin it's way worse than starting at too little and adjusting over time
Thing is though I've only just found this out & I'm 60 & I thought I was quite updated, my mum told me when I was a kid & her mum told her etc, it goes back generations. We're told to put creams etc on in the shower 'when the pores are open' it's going to be a huge myth to kill off so how do we go about it?
I have a facial steamer but I don’t actually use it for skincare. I use it for when I get really bad colds and can’t breathe through my nose. It’s the best. I used to just jump in a hot shower but then the water would get cold soon and you already felt like crap from being so sick. You don’t have to worry about that with a facial steamer and it saves water compared to the long hot shower method (my facial steamer maybe takes a cup of water for 5 minutes of steam. Then, you just refill for longer steam time)
All detox stuff sounds like BS to me. Your body naturally detoxify itself thanks to sweat, breath, kidneys and good ol' liver. Putting a "detox" anything only makes all those organs work more.
Can you do a video on 2nd and 3rd degree burns? Like how to take care of the wounds, what to eat to heal it faster, supplements, best home treatments, dealing with hypopigmentation and hypertrophic scarring, etc.
Hey Dr Dray, another question 😊 why do we have to ease into products like retinoic acid, if our skin doesn't get used to it? How does it understand it shouldn't react in an inflammatory way anymore?
She probably won't answer, i guess, as she has made several videos on retin-A and its milder forms such as retinols already. Look them up in her library.
Oh thank you for saying Myth 3 is false. I use to think my skin was getting used to a certain product and I had to change it. You are such a savior with your information. Thank you 😊
Thank you for this. I've been falling into myths myself and, honestly, making myself think that my chemical sunscreen is going to ruin my skin or make me infertile or something. 😬
@@user-ev2ed5uo4f I've never heard that before, maybe American sunscreens cause they're not stable. I only use Asian sunscreens, I wish I could use only zinc based ones but I dont wanna walk around with a cast on my face.
@@nate8525 You can get combination sunscreens that have both zinc oxide and a few chemical filters to lessen the white cast. Also there are mineral based sunscreens that are tinted so no white cast at all. :)
@@helpfulnatural l my skin just hates sunscreens, I have yet to find one that i like. They all leaves the most shiny film on my face and I hate it. I've tried combo sunscreens and I still get a cast but theres only one that found which was a Asian sunscreen but it was too shiny.
Regarding the medical grade crap, I read yesterday actually somebody stating that so-called medical grade skincare uses better quality or more concentrated ingredients. How in the heck would they be sourcing their ingredients any different can any place, if that makes
The marketing spin is unbelievable. It's how makeup brands like Kjaer Weis get away with charging $50 for a shadow, because they sourced their "organic", "clean", "high quality" ingredients from Italy. So what are they implying? That every other ingredient out there is "dirty", "polluted", and "inferior"?
You are just the best!! I always feel guilty because I don't purchase "medical grade" products. I am 56 and I mostly just keep my skin clean, moisturized and protected from the sun. I see a dermatoligist on schedule for my skin cancer check-ups. I have begun to notice some texture in my skin so I suppose I should get busy researching how to help with this. I appreciate your honesty and that you share your knowledge and experience with us!💞
I just saw an Instagram post yesterday from an influencer who said when their skin is irritated they shower twice a day to steam out pores. 😅 Good timing for this video!
Most of the influencers are very young people doing crazy stuff to their faces, 10 years from now they will not be able to show their faces on camera 😬 My mom used to say all the time, don't mess with your face, natural simple care is the best!
Dermatologist: Cerave from the tub- Aesthetician:actually your skin will spontaneously combust if you use a product under £200 trust me I’m a professional
Lol, everything my dad ever told me has been murder on my skin for decades. Better late than never though, my skin already looks better than it has since before puberty!
My dad too! I got mad when he told me to stop eating peanut butter and chocolate because he thought they cause acne. I was like, no thanks. Oh well, they had the best intentions though 😊
Penny Opinions . Oh yeah? Well have you heard this one? A baby’s’ urine soaked diaper will cure acne if you would wipe your face with the diaper. Yup. ( I kept the acne instead)

It’s all about finding a trustworthy and knowledgeable person that can help you understand your skin and how to improve it, Derm. or esthetician.
No video update, but I'm also wishing her well.
Me, too! Sending virtual hugs to her and Tybee. 🤗💕👩🏻🦳🐶 xoxo Christine in sunny CO
Same here. Such a lovely woman. I miss seeing her and hope she's doing well.
Yes miss her 💕
I was thinking the same thing. Hope she is doing well. Little Tybee too xxoo
I loved this video! Thanks Dr Dray... Hugs from Amsterdam
Hey doc, what about jars making it easier for products to get in contact with oxygen and start loosing their benefits of some ingredients?
this is what Paula Begoun says. Can you address this, @DrDray?
Best advice ever! Always watch your uploads - best on you tube !
If I have just washed my face and therefore washed and dried my hands, I’m putting CLEAN fingers into my jar of moisturiser.
I was thinking the same - who is doing any after cleansing products with dirty hands? LOL
On point, great video! You can probably make thousand videos like this, there are so many myths in the beauty world.
Love this video!! Thank you so much. Hope you, your mum and Tybee are keeping well 💕
Thank you so much!
I love it when you’re sassy and go offffff 👏🏼
If skin doesn’t get “used to ingredients”....why do we need to start retinal very slowly and gradually move up to higher strengths? Not being obnoxious just curious.
I think its bc retinol can be very sensitizing to your skin, so to get to the level is recommended to you, you need to start slow so your skin won't react badly to it
I think it's because it works on the deep layers of skin. But that's just me saying that
@@bluessarah2208 Also because not everyone would need it daily, every other day, etc. "Start slow and go low" is the term used a lot to find the sweet spot for individuals with medicines/treatments. If you start at the top and it's too much for your skin it's way worse than starting at too little and adjusting over time
Her skin is GOALS omg!
Say it louder for the people in the back:
PORES ARE NOT DOORS
😂❤️❤️
Thing is though I've only just found this out & I'm 60 & I thought I was quite updated, my mum told me when I was a kid & her mum told her etc, it goes back generations. We're told to put creams etc on in the shower 'when the pores are open' it's going to be a huge myth to kill off so how do we go about it?
Daniela 😂😂
I love Dr. Dray's debunking videos. Thanks so much!
I have literally never heard that moisturizers make skin "lazy".
I have heard that
I love these videos. It's so refreshing to hear an expert debunking all the bs we are always being told.
This is the person everyone should take advise from. Not Hyram
starfab7 Hyram researches a lot to give advice, and most dermatologists say he if very knowledgeable about skincare ingredients.
Thank You! Always great information! Cannot wait to see you hit the 1 Million Mark! You deserve it!
All the myths sound so no nosense like its unreal 💖😂 Happy Tuesday loved the video
Happy Tuesday!
Then, you just refill for longer steam time)
Doesn’t really solve anything cold wise but you won’t feel like complete death for a bit and won’t need to breathe through your mouth.
Can you talk about “anti pollution” skincare?
Like "detox" skincare?
omg I love you no
Yes pls
All detox stuff sounds like BS to me. Your body naturally detoxify itself thanks to sweat, breath, kidneys and good ol' liver. Putting a "detox" anything only makes all those organs work more.
Lina Liina im not talking about detox!!!
Just love your no nonsense approach to things!
I love the eye roll thumbnail 😂❤ That's how you know it's gonna be a good video hahaha
The eye roll suckered me in😆
Can you do a video on 2nd and 3rd degree burns? Like how to take care of the wounds, what to eat to heal it faster, supplements, best home treatments, dealing with hypopigmentation and hypertrophic scarring, etc.
My 15th day of accutane about to be 16th and I'm already seeing a lot less breakouts I'm so happy (pin this if your HAPPY for me)
Hey Dr Dray, another question 😊 why do we have to ease into products like retinoic acid, if our skin doesn't get used to it? How does it understand it shouldn't react in an inflammatory way anymore?
She probably won't answer, i guess, as she has made several videos on retin-A and its milder forms such as retinols already. Look them up in her library.
I think she kinda answers this in her retinoids videos
Oh thank you for saying Myth 3 is false. I use to think my skin was getting used to a certain product and I had to change it. You are such a savior with your information. Thank you 😊
this was amazing! thanks Dr. Dray!!! I always feel more knowledgeable watching your videos.. def learn something new everyday!!! thank you!! 🥰
Thank you for your time. I enjoy listening:)
Thank you for this. I've been falling into myths myself and, honestly, making myself think that my chemical sunscreen is going to ruin my skin or make me infertile or something. 😬
oh my god HAHA
Chemical sunscreens are fine, I would worry more about not using them when going to the beach and killing the coral reefs.
I love this much needed injection of truth. Thank you!!
Regarding the medical grade crap, I read yesterday actually somebody stating that so-called medical grade skincare uses better quality or more concentrated ingredients. How in the heck would they be sourcing their ingredients any different can any place, if that makes
that is all marketing language
Thank you SO much for spending your quarantine time keeping us educated!
Dermatologist: Cerave from the tub- Aesthetician:actually your skin will spontaneously combust if you use a product under £200 trust me I’m a professional
I have learned so much about skincare through your videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge, you are my favorite! ❤️
@@sheiladamazo1752 I mean, dairy and sugar can trigger breakouts with some people
Penny Opinions . Oh yeah? Well have you heard this one? A baby’s’ urine soaked diaper will cure acne if you would wipe your face with the diaper. Yup. ( I kept the acne instead)
@@Donna-cc1ktLol, I've never heard of applying it with a diaper, but I've known some people who were blessed by their first son until they got their changing system down pat.
Mine told me to wash my face with bar soap and I had extremely bad skin throughout middle school and high school.😬
Dr. Dray new to your channel....love your no nonsense approach to skincare
Great video as always, Dr. Dray! You are just the bestest and the coolest. I have been watching you for a year now, and continue to get the education of a lifetime from you. Have a beautiful day, dear Dr. Dray. Sending love to your mom and Tybeeeeee xoxo
Thanks so much!
As usual, very informative, with a nice touch of dry humour that can't hurt. Thank you for making all that available to everybody.
Hi Dr Dray! 👋🏼
Thank you so much for promoting evidence-based and peer-reviewed approaches to skincare! 🙌🏼
It would be wonderful if you could critically appraise (or debunk) ‘Face Mapping’?
Am I in thinking there’s no published scientific evidence for this theory? Thank you! 🤓👍🏼🤓
OMG!😱 You just saved me a lot of money 💰!! Thank you!🙏 I’m restarting my skincare/makeup journey after many many years of not doing either. Crazy I know. I’ve been watching several different RUclipsrs, web searching but still you can miss things. Plus with all the hype on Amazon and Tik Tok favs I was ready to make another big purchase (some I already have). I just finished another skincare video when this video popped up and I THANKFULLY watched! Appreciate your honesty & clarity!! 🙏🙏🙏😅❤️🤘
Pores are not doors. - DR DRAY.
I SHALL REMEMBER THIS FOREVER
OMG I needed to watch this. I've heard all of this myths.
This is why I don’t trust aestheticians and I only trust dermatologists, I’ve seen most if not all aestheticians steam their clients face before a treatment, I’ve also seen some give out misinformation about products and they never include warnings. It’s better to be safe than sorry and just stick to dermatologist advice.
Jenna A same other than Dr. Dray, James Welsh and SkinCarebyHyram are the only skincare youtubers that I trust with my skin
Happy Tuesday Dr Dray and everyone. This is so important to watch .I grew up with some off these myths and they are still around. I just had cataract surgery this morning and just came home All went well Have a wonderful day love to mom and Tybee 😍😍🤗
mary ann Gonzalez: Glad to hear your eye surgery went well. 👏 🤗
Happy Tuesday mary ann Gonzalez! I’m glad your surgery went well! 💗 I hope the rest of your day is wonderful too!
@@jt8142 thanks JT 🤗
Latricia Mendoza thanks so much enjoy your day 😊😊
It's such a simple surgery with amazing results, your eyes will shine!. Rest up & take care, make the most of it! xxx Some kind Drs. go over to Africa in their spare time & just do heaps of them because it makes such a difference to their lives. Some people are so good & kind we only hear about the bad ones on the news it's such a shame xxx
Thumbnail is my current mood
lol! thanks for watching
Awesome video Doctor. Beautypedia myths die hard especially on YTube. The 2 myths that drive me nuts are "Everyone needs a chemical exfoliant" and "Mineral oil is bad/dangerous". Stay healthy and well.
I think oily skins do "get lazy" when you put moisturizers and produce less oil, but this "get lazy" is a good thing.
Thank you for putting the smack down on these skin care myths.
You are so welcome!
