Rakugakids for Evo 2018
Love
Evo 2020.
That art-style is beautiful. Sucks that it's never been continued.
Tell me about it, and I find that type of style to be a lot more appealing than the realistic style of most modern video games (especially the "Uncharted" series).
Casey Decker yeah I prefer 2d over 3d fighting games just because of the art style . cough* mvci
Should release it for virtual console for the newest Nintendo console worldwide so that people could play it (especially if they live in different places like America or Australia)
"the market for a child-friendly fighting game might not be so big" then the very next year Smash came out and has been unbelievably successful with every installment. Not saying a random game with more traditional fighting game mechanics, an unusual art style and without the massive appeal of branded characters would've necessarily been successful at all here, but I still get the feeling konami were kicking themselves at least a bit for that one.
hip indeed Nintendo themselves was actually going to leave Smash in Japan, not expecting it to do well. The overwelming positive reaction in Japan convinced them to bring it overseas.
Looks really good for an N64 game. The characters are extremely smooth and I could understand why it would need to load.
Rakuga kids for EVO
Personally I'm just wondering why the European English localization didn't call the game "Doodle Dudes"; that'd sound like the perfect English name for the game given the wordplay behind the Japanese title.
Because then GG couldn't use it for their videos featuring Oney.
Dudels.
Precisely xD
...and you know this HOW, +D-MMA and +Igo Dreamer? Prove it or shut the fuck up, you two perverted dumb asses! Thank you.
Pax Humana please calm down you’re scaring me, it’s just a penis, no need to yell
I think the obvious choice here is mamezo
:0 Hey Shesez
Big up shesez
Pelvic thrusts that launch bombs. Eat your heart out, Mortal Kombat.
Nah, it's all about the robot
Good maymay m9
Tha art is so good it could easly pass as a current gen indie game; just imagine it in 16:9 HD
The loading is there because the cartridge uses compression to make room for all of that animation. The N64 has to unpack the compressed data before going into RAM.
For some reason, I always get Rakuga Kids confused with Rakugaki Showtime, which was a Playstation one game made by Treasure, and has a bit of a simaler style. Even though Rakugaki Showtime is more like a quasi 3D brawler.
Maybe Rakuga Kids could be considered a sequel of sorts to that game since a lot of former Konami people helped to found Treasure, +schtive81?
I would’ve loved to see this game come to North America
Just use an emulator
@@sabimenow don't do that
For virtual console on new Nintendo consoles
Today it would be praised by its art style. It looks very creative.
yeah shame they never followed up on the sequel bait in the ending which is a shame because i love this game... honestly it just FEELS better to play since every character (except robot CHO) doesnt move as sluggishly as your typical fighting game character and your jumps go more than 3 inches of distance... also the art style is nice as you said but thats a given
Used to rent this game all the time, was alot of fun but the slowdown was huge, and long load times really didn't work in it's favor. Music was solid, and Mamezo and Darkness were OP as shit.
Chalk zone fighting game? Next level thinking right there
I think it was partly the competition and partly the art style.
I was gaming at the time and the feeling here in the UK was that we 'got' the Japanese quirkiness quite well, whereas the Americans needed to put anything Japanese through a whole series of filters before releasing there.
See for example, the difference between the art of the box of Streetfighter 2 for the Super Famicom, and contrast it with the art style on the corresponding US release, or perhaps NES mega Man versus Famicom Mega Man box art, for a very quick and dirty example of what I mean.
Asia and to some extent Europe and UK were absolutely fine with Japanese cartoon weirdness, but what seemed to sell in the US was more realistic art styles.
Sure, they could change the box art, but changing the entire game to appeal to North America just may not have been worth the effort in a market saturated with high quality fighting games.
But hey, it's just a theory.
A GAAAAAAAAAME Th...I'll just go...
That's the feeling I got too. See also: American Kirby boxart.
Would also explain why whole franchises like TwinBee were brought to PAL regions but not NA
DrOdd Oh speaking of Twinbee, someone release a port of one of the Twinbee games on the Commodore Amiga of all machines, which was very popular in the UK, a 16 bit PC that came out in 1985 and was relevant til the mid 90's here.
Anyway, this port was fucking awesome, came out in '98 and wiped the floor with any other home port I've ever seen. Only found out about it's existence yesterday.

The Great Hadoken Yeah, being from America myself I grew up before a lot of Japanese games stopped being Amercanized and heavily altered. Take any RPG that was not something like Final Fantasy and it'd have removal of in games items such as alcohol to slip pass the censors or change names character names, race, etc. Star Ocean 2 and Persona 1 are just a few examples from what's above.
Also, yes, as DrOdd said, American box art tries to make everything look more cool and discards cuteness. Kirby was a great example that reminds me of how this was done with series like Dragon Quest and Digimon. Doesn't help that cartoon art of any kind is seen as just "kid's stuff", either.
Yeah, I don't necessarily think the kids had a problem with the cartoony stuff, why would they? But at that time it certainly was a common thing not to market stuff in that way to North America. I'm sure they had their reasons, research or whatever. Maybe since at the time you had stuff like Thundercats and He-Man on TV with 'realistic' cartoon looks, they simply assumed the same kind of look would be good for the game industry too.
Or maybe they simply didn't KNOW enough about the Japanese art styles and felt they didn't want their investment to be the Guinea pig.
Regardless, everyone learned after Final Fantasy 7 that that kind of look COULD be very successful in North America too. Things slowly began to change after that.
You know, I got carried away talking about the art, I forgot it was a 2d game on a console where 2d was almost completely absent. And in an age when the west was almost totally if the opiniin that 2d was soooo last-gen. Only Japan would still produce 2d games with any kind of regularity at all.
I think this will have been a factor too. Not the only factor, hence Europe, but a factor.
I'll be frank, those fluid sprite animations on this hardware looks absolutely amazing.
It's kind of weird seeing a game here that I've actually played.
I remember at the end credits, they show off a few more crayon characters, which I always figured were a tease for a sequel. More likely just some scrapped fighters.
In fact you are correct, the game was destined to have a sequel, since in the end it featured a twins (that possibly be playable in the cancel sequel), but from the looks of it and unfortunately, the game didn't get sequel.
I like that art style! I need Nintendo to bring it over to N. America on a future VC for the Switch.
This is SO COOL! I remember seeing a tiny screen shot of this game in october 1998s tips n tricks magazine, but i never looked it up till tonight!
3:13 that looks like the Super Mario Sunshine Sun!
That's exactly what I thought. I'm surprised more people haven't caught that.
Andrew Malkin same
finally, a game which europe can be proud of having.
we missed out on hey you, pikachu, and many
other n64 classics.
Pretty interesting. Reminds me of Yoshi's Island.
The art style reminds me of Rakugaki Showtime, for the PS1, but it seems they aren't related (Rakuga Kids is Konami's work, Rakugaki Showtime is Treasure's/Enix's).
Edit: oh, wait, Treasure was founded by former Konami employees! Maybe they are related somehow.
Most fighting games usually look like anime, realism or mixture of both in artstyle. Thats fine and a lot of them look fantastic. But it was a breath of fresh air to see a fighting game stylized with such a simple look. I hope an indie company does something similar to this game someday.
stiff controls and restrictive attacks? what is this? a Netherrealm game? xD
Nvgfgfughytdfcxyuhui
Rakuga Kids remake for Switch!
Anything region locked games in the US only?
Good question. I second this. ^
They need to get on that.
Andrew Fern Sonic Boom
WOT Nintendo 64?! That looks freaking BEAUTIFUL thanks to a very lovely art style with the sprites and colorful art direction for the 3D backgrounds. If it wasn't for the very obvious 3D kids portraits, I'd think this was a much more recent game.
I'd honestly love a sequel to it; it be a cult classic game. Though if made, they would need to increase the speed of the characters
theyre actually faster than your typical fighting game character (then again i havent played all that many fighting games but theyre usually consistently sluggish and have jumps that go all of 2 inches) so me personally i doubt theyd actually need much if any speed up
Hey, I recognize that cat fighter from SaltyBet!
Pretty cool when you can recognize a character you know nothing about from a random place on the Internet. Just goes to show how well the character is designed if he's that memorable.
That was nicely nostalgic. I used to play this game a lot back when it was new, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was cool to see the Bear Tank in Circle of the Moon too.
It's funny how this game has stood the test of time and looks great today yet those triple A North American PS1 releases mentioned in this video look ugly by today's standards.
Cel-shading does that!
Parapa (however it's spelled) the Rapper uses the exact same art style, so...
Something like Tekken 3? I've never been much of a fan of fighting games, but Tekken 3 was definitely a milestone in graphical presentation. It may be 'dated' by todays standards, but if it doesn't hold a place in history for being a well received and mechanically 'still' sound fighting game (which even no a fan, it was solid), it holds up better than this...Thing...
XMvSF and MvC 1 still look and play great if you ignore the infinites in the games. Tekken is a tragedy though...
@@linkno1 Tekken looks like shit honestly
@@MrDmoney156 Tekken does, but Tekken 3 looks good for its time. Not something I would go back and play, but that goes for a majority of the shitty games from that era.
Looks really interesting ngl. Thanks for letting us know about this :)
I vividly remember reading about this game in a gaming magazine when it was new, with a specific reference to a character sticking their trumpet "where the sun don't shine"
I was a kid so it took me a while to understand what that meant
Wow! That really is some incredibly polished frame work. Even by today's standards that's still really professional looking.
Game's pretty fun. Too bad the loading times are so awful.
Beating the singleplayer also gives you a sneak preview of a supposed sequel with new kids moving into the neighbourhood and two new fighter doodles walking across the screen. I'm still waiting :(
Thats some good animation man
Awesome video
this actually looks really cool. the character designs are p neat too
I had this game as a kid (UK) and played it with my sister all the time. Great game!
This looks awesome
The music in this is great, special mention going to Twinkle Beach.
Flying Dragon is such an unknown title for the N64. It's a really great title: it has "kid" mode where it plays like a 2D fighter and "adult" mode where the kid characters grow up and it plays like a 3D fighter. Plus there are items and other RPG elements too.
This was the first game I got on the N64 alongside Pokemon Stadium.
It was genuinely quite fun. It was like a kid version of Street Fighter, especially control-wise.
Astronots and Darkness were my jam.
OMG i've been trying to remember this game for yeaaars!!
beartank is also a selectable character in the bemani game pop'n music
The Super Couch Fighters played this game a while ago. It was pretty fun to watch.
The animation is ao smooth.

Says "Jesus loves you" on the wall??
PRAISE THE LORD
I accidentally stumbled upon this game on my flash cart and my husband and I loved it when we gave it a try.
You have a Nintendo 64 flashcart, I didn't even know that they made flashcarts for the nintendo 64?.
@@unknownninja1 yep! Everdrive has versions for the N64! They’re fantastic and compatible with nearly every game and many of the home brews.
I remember renting this once when it first came out, I didn't think much of it at the time but it's relative obscurity made it interesting in hindsight. One thing I do remember, and I don't know if this was a bug or a feature, is that on the character select screen there was a random option, and it could end up selecting unlockable characters who were not yet unlocked. A few times playing with my siblings I picked random and selected a really powerful character that you presumably unlocked by beating the game, a lot of complaining was endured whenever that happened.
I love the look of the game, it looks so good.
I see where parappa the rapper came from...
Yup, almost the same style
Bear tank is so cool!
Reminds me a lot of Parappa The Rapper art style
Yup, almost the same style
I. FREAKING. Love this game! I had to get an emulation of this after I had seen Game Grumps play it years ago.
Since they were so successful with Cuphead, maybe Studio MDHR should offer to make a sequel for Konami; that'd certainly be something.
I remember unlocking Bear Tank in that Konami racing game. I was so confused
I remember this game. Fun times!
I played this game a loooot with my siblings, especially with my sister. I don't remember much about the storyline but we always played against each other. Good times.
Nice video.
I watched the Super Couch Fighters play this. It's surprisingly tight.
Crayons= Stand arrow from Jojo's bizarre adventure
Swoosh Mcjuice shut the fuck up
Beartank is my favorite Stand
I hope i never have to see you in a comment section ever again
Swoosh Mcjuice I like JoJo but this makes zero sense.
Mookal H the 8 crayons gave the kids the fighters in the game, the arrow gives the person who is hit by it gives them a stand
i played rakuga kids on a homebrewed wii and it made me almost freak out because of the music.
Man I don't even really like fighting games, but I wanna play this one. It looks awesome!
I would’ve loved to have this game!
It was absolutely awesome and unique.
Not everything has to be super serious.
You guys should cover Terranigma next. One of my favourite RPGs that america never got.
Looks like some Sesame Street fighting game with a Japanese name.
Nytronik it's like Street Fighter slapped together with cartoons
are you guys talking about Pocket Fighter?
Sesame Street Fighter
Always loved the art style. Reminded me of Parappa the Rapper
Now I want a sequel to this game.
Mamezo's animations are amazing.
THANK YOU I WAS LITERALLY THINKING ABOUT THIS GAME BUT I FORGOT THE ACTUAL NAME OF IT
Holy shit, I'm quite early
Fantastic video guys!
Oh my god this game is adorable!
It looked really cool.
im in love i need to play this
Played the PAL version of this game. Was fun!
I watched Game Grumps play this, I love it
I remember that game from my childhood, very weird and funny. And you could play as the ghost dog, if you hit random and had a bit of luck. xD
I remember OG game grumps played this. Those were the days.
This looks cool. Why didn't this come out here?
I've had this game for years.
I honestly would have loved to play this as a kid back then
2:47 this is incredible????? something I've wanted in basically every game to an unrealistic amount???
I was confused for a second. I just uploaded a video all about Castlevania games, so when I saw Circle of the Moon I was like, am I watching the right video? Also, never knew about the sleepy bear transformation.
So the Bear Ring in Castlevania Circle of the Moon was a reference to the bear in THIS game!
Between this, Deadly Arts and Hybrid Heaven, I enjoyed Konami's N64 experiments.
Kinda reminds of Chalk zone.
you guys should do super tempo next
This is cool.
This... actually looks pretty cool.
That green guy did a pelvic thrust and a bomb came out. What a hero.
I want them to put this on the Nintendo eshop so that people can download it
I think this would have been a good candidate for a rerelease on the DS as budget title, but I can see why we did not get it here in the us because like you said the market was flooded with too many great fighters at the time.
"It plays similarly to........every other fighting game"
Enlightening description
I would have played this if it was released in North America. Nice video.
This is cool
i like the way how this game looks, wish it came here during the n64 era i would have bought it as a kid
I've played this game before. Couldn't tell you where, but I know I've played it.
I wonder if Mamezo was possibly an inspiration for Helix in ARMS
I watch Region Locked for one reason and one reason only,
that sweet sweet 60FPS intro.
What happened to this intro?
