As a child playing Super Smash Bros Melee, I was always fascinated with the trophies that I would collect and reading their bio, especially the ones that said Japan Only. And this was when the internet was at it's infancy so you really couldn't look up the information of the Japan only games. It broke my heart collecting trophies in Melee that said Japan Only, because I only had my mind to imagine what the gameplay of those Japan Only games could've been, but I'm happy DYKG gave some love to Doshin the Giant and summarized what the game was like, because when I got the Love Giant and the Hate Giant trophy in Melee, I always wondered what the game was like, and I finally know thanks to this video, Thank You DYKG!!!

For me, it was the complete opposite since I live in Europe. My cousin got this game on his 6th birthday or something and... oh boy that game was trippy and creepy af for a 6 year old. When I saw a Doshin trophy existing in Melee, I was absolutely shocked. I was like: How did this unknown weird game (only my cousin and I pretty much knew about this game) land in Melee?
It was so damn awkward, I tell ya.

I'm glad to see Doshin is getting the love {or hate} he so richly deserves. I spent about two years of my life playing the game and translating the text of both the N64 64DD games, just so I could beat it. But I finally managed to unlock all the movie clips in the Expansion which was super fun, and so far I think I'm the only person on RUclips to have ever completed the entire expansion game. Someday maybe we'll find out what the lyrics to the Expansion game's ending song are.

I thought it sounded cool, so I begged my mom to get it for me. She took the time after school to drive me an hour into the city, where we then went to every place we could think of that sold games trying to find it. It wasn't until the third or fourth store that someone looked it up and pointed out that it was region locked. Mom was less than pleased to have spend so much time trying to find this game that we couldn't even get. In retrospect, I probably wouldn't have even enjoyed it that much.

I knew about Randnet and the N64DD because of a Mexican Nintendo magazine I read, and I also found out later about the GameCube port. I must've looked up the word Doshin or something.

I still have my copy of this on the Gamcube. I always remember seeing the 64DD version in magazines and was quite surprised when I heard it was getting a release. It always struck me as being very similar in concept to Black & White. I didn't realise at the time that it only got a Japanese and Europeon release only though seeing as it was a relitivly early release I would have thought it would have been released worldwide. Playing the game though it is one of those games where you have to accept a slow pace beause of how much harder it becomes to navigate the larger you get. An interesting curiosity of the time though and not the kind of game you would expect on a console.

For StarTropics 1 the only thing that might make for an interesting topic is if there was some big reason why it never came out in Japan despite being made there, as it was released only in North America and Europe. StarTropics 2 was a North America exclusive, though to be honest I can already guess the reason why Europe never got it is simply because it came out in 1994 and Nintendo of Europe probably didn't see a new NES game released at the time being worth the time and money to translate into multiple languages.

Loved this game, played it a lot on my gamecube ! We had doshin but never got baten kaitos 2 here in europe, but I had a freeloader so i could play baiten kaitos 2, which is a great game. If only a remastered collection of baten kaitos 1 and 2 could be released on switch.

Nathanael Ribeiro a remaster would be cool but they would need a pretty big public outcry for it

I loved the freeloader, the fact that there was very little compatibility issues when playing games made it a must purchase, well unless you still had a really old tv that didn't support a 60hz refreshrate. Glad we had moved past pal systems having a slower processor in systems over here because the slower refreshrate.

I remember Doshin very well... But only its actual trophy, in Super Smash Bros Melee. I was always curious about him. It's sad that he never became relevant enough to actually appear in the Smash series again.

I can kinda see this as a sort of inspiration to Black&White for the PC. Similar aspect and some bits here and there.

This game remind me a lot of “Black and White” by Lionhead Studios back in the early 2000 for PC

Im amazed this could run on the N64, with all the ground geometry, and little AI characters, and land deformation.
And I imagine Doshin didn't look this smooth on the 64

I remember seeing this as a trophy on Smash Bros Melee and immediately thinking the giant looked cool as hell and classic Nintendo and wanted it. Just starting the video, but thank you.

This seems like a very similar premise to Black & White on the PC.

You've got to wonder how many takes it took for the tinkle bit and not laugh. Honestly I'd probably just laugh my ass off every time.

I played Doshin non stop when I was 3-5 years old but I had no idea how to play so I used to move the terrain and accidentally kill the islanders and then I’d turn evil and I’d get scared. Fun times.

very iron giant. except for the tinkling aspect.
also the whole set up in the expansion with how doshin is locked up and the environment around the "cage" is reminiscent of the 1976 king kong remake. I wonder if i'm reading into things or if i'm spot on
Would love to play this on the Switch or PC
