    To celebrate the Nintendo Switch being revealed, we take a look at one of the company's earlier and more obscure titles. This time around we look at the gameplay of The Mysterious Murasame Castle (謎の村雨城 Nazo no Murasame Jō). Built on the Zelda engine, it's a much more action orientated title. Our analysis led us to some interesting conclusions.

    "Fan outcry caused Nintendo to release Fatal Frame 2 internationally". Meanwhile, they still don't give us Mother 3!

      This was back when Nintendo actually listened to their fans.

    • @SonicTheCutehog
      @SonicTheCutehog 7 лет назад +5

      Swiggity Swooty Fatal Frame 2 came out after Mother 3, though. Mother 3 and Sm4sh DLC were some of the worst times Nintendo never listened to their fans.

    • @koopakape
      @koopakape 7 лет назад +9

      ...Mother 3 has been out for far longer, and the fan outcry has been far louder since the very beginning.
      Of course, it'd also be much more difficult and time-consuming to localize, and probably fits a more niche audience, but the point still stands.

    • @swiggityswooty8579
      @swiggityswooty8579 7 лет назад +5

      hip indeed Mother 3 is already translated. By fans. I can see why Nintendo doesn't want to localize it anymore, and if they did, they'd probably censor a whole lot of shit (lika father becoming insane after he found out his wife was killed by a dinosaur), so people would probably want to switch to the fan translation.

      Not that many people in the United States even new what earthbound was especially in 2006. Most people like myself didn't know ness until smash bros and even then interest wasn't immense. I've played roms of earthbound but the price tag and the over hype train kept me from purchasing the cart. Its not like fan made English translations of the game doesn't exist. Then you get to games like half life 3 that have been in development hell for years and there is no product out their.

  • @fireflocs

    Absolutely amazing that the US in the 80's didn't buy overly Japanese games considering how much that era loved ninjas.

    • @Aztyph
      @Aztyph 7 лет назад +8

      Ninja were really the *only* thing that the Eighties loved about Japan, though. From what I can recall, they didn't give a damn about samurai and various aspects of Japanese mythology until at least the late Nineties, when anime started getting more exposure in the West. And as good as Takamaru's game is, he himself isn't a ninja, but is only fighting them, which would make him a degree less cooler than someone like Ryu Hayabusa (from _Ninja Gaiden_) in comparison.

    • @fireflocs
      @fireflocs 7 лет назад +1

      Aztyph To be honest, that's what I was thinking as well. Though I can't help but wonder how much of that disinterest was due to decisions like the one to not export this game.

    • @Chourtaird1
      @Chourtaird1 7 лет назад +1

      Germany actually had a weird phase in the late 80s/early 90s where the word "Ninja" was about as bad a word you can say as "violent video game" in the mid to late 2000s everywhere or "Social Justice Warrior" in todays internet culture. I am not sure about europe as a whole but japanese stuff was seen as bad around that time in germany.
      The Ninja Turtles Cartoon in the 90s had it's name changed to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles because of that (it actually took me over 5 years to realise they are actually called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...and it still feels weird to me not calling them Hero Turtles)
      So I am not sure how well Murasame castle would have worked in europe or at least in germany because...NINJAS ARE EVIL!

    • @ThePsychoguy
      @ThePsychoguy 7 лет назад +2

      There wasn't much knowledge about Japan at the time since anime was more obscure and there wasn't an internet. We learned about ninjas from comics and movies, and kind of went with it haha. Lots of adults in this period were getting into learning about Sun Tzu's Art of War and Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings around that period too, though...

    In my humble opinion, The Mysterious Murasame Castle could have been released in North America on the NES after some heavy localization and a significant lowering of the game's difficulty. They could have called it Samurai Adventure or something like that.

      We had this video written and gameplay recorded for around a month, but myself and the editor of the video were both moving before we could finish it. In that time, it seems others have also covered the game - it's not the first time it's happened, and it probably won't be the last. We actually had this video planned before our Pokemon episode, we just felt Pokemon was a better introduction.

    Dammit, Takamaru would have been amazing in Super Smash Bros. An elemental swordsman. He could have faired well against Robin.

    • @L33PL4Y
      @L33PL4Y 7 лет назад

      because more swordsmen is EXACTLY WHAT SMASH NEEDS

    • @Medachod
      @Medachod 7 лет назад

      EBsessed I'm depressed that everybody forgets about Takamaru's elemental powers and ninja skills that would significantly differ him from other swordsmen. The game barely has any mage characters, let alone any mage swordsmen, so why not have the first mage swordsman join the fray?

    • @L33PL4Y
      @L33PL4Y 7 лет назад

      Medachod Or they could just put in mage characters that don't have swords so there wouldn't be EVEN MORE swordsmen in the damn game

    • @Medachod
      @Medachod 7 лет назад

      EBsessed Take Takamaru's sword away, then. He's fought without it before. One of his most prominent abilities was projectile obliteration. He could have a moveset that is just as good as a brawler as is a swordsman.
      Though, nobody else wields a katana yet, so that would be a unique sword if I ever saw one.

    Wow this actually looks pretty interesting! I think I'll see just how much the virtual console copy costs :)
    And as for localization, I feel like if they REALLY wanted to, all they would have had to do is switch the Japanese aesthetic with a Medieval Europe one, having knights and monsters instead of samurai and demons. (but keeping the alien overlord)

      It looks to me that it's a game that a lot of Nintendo staff, or at least the older ones, really like the game and so enjoy referencing it occasionally in the games they make but it's otherwise not that well known or well liked in popular culture, even in Japan.

    No, that's not what Feudal Ninjas look like, way to perpetuate that myth in your "Factual" video. Doubt anyone reads these comments for factual information, but Feudal Japan Ninjas looked like any other peasent in those days, as Nobles would ignore the lower class completely allowing a Ninja to kill someone and disappear back into the crowd without a bat of an eye. Where we THINK we know ninjas actually comes from the Kabuki Theathre, which started well after the Warring States/Feudal Era in 1603. In those plays, men dressed in all black worked as constant stage hands but never interfered with the players on stage. Unless, of course, they were acting as a ninja. Since Ninjas were "people who you ignore until they attack" the black hooded figures could "leap" into the play and kill someone while looking like any other stage hand who was moving props around.

      While that is intriguing, I'm not at all surprised that DYKG made that mistake. Its quite a common one. But regardless, it would've been better to call them "stereotypical Feudal ninjas" or something.

      Yes-yes, we're all very impressed that you know your history, but the presenter simply used the pop-culture image of a ninja as useful shorthand for what we all understand is an inherently inaccurate portrayal, as reference point to the basic concept of a ninja and the historical precedent rather than 1-1 fidelity. In other words, don't be that pedantic guy, no-one likes that pedantic guy.

    Yeah, I played it. Maybe tone down the title. It's one of the most well known japan only titles for Famicom. It's even on the e-shop, so you don't even have to emulate or buy it online. The only way it could be less obscure is if Takamaru was actually playable in Super Smash Bros.

    Games were never "too hard" for the western market, since renting games was so prevailent back then, but wasn't a thing in Japan. Tougher the game, more often it gets rented. Developers would somtimes make games harder for the western release.

    Considering the age, 650 thousand plus those 150 thousand rewrites are pretty decent numbers, which sorta justifies the game being referenced so much later on.
    (At the time, any game that sold... what? 320 thousand? 400 thousand? Was already a success - and comparing it to Mario is just overkill lol)

    There's also a physical copy of fatal Frame/Project Zero Maiden Of Black water, but it was only available in Europe in a limited edition set that cost £50. Now it goes for over £100, mostly as it was only available via Nintendo Directly as well as GAME UK, with no NTSC physical copy. Coupled in with the Wii U being region locked the whole launch was a complete mess for a pretty damn good horror game.

  • @TheAufziehvogel

    Boy have I missed oot Crate!
    I think it was very weird to name Fatal Frame V as an positive eShop exclusive example. The Game is over 15 Gigabyte in File Size am I right? Like Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the Game is released physical here in Europe and Australia (in Australia even as a Standard Version). It seems like, Nintendo of America still have problems with Games focusing on japanese culture. Reggie blamed the sales and what's best for business, but the minimum Level in trust in such Titles is another thing Nintendo of America isn't doing any risks. Even the Rainfall Games were only released because of such actions. And yes, I know the Regginator said those projects had zero influence on the US-Release of those Games.

    Murasame Castles inclusion in SW3 was nice to have be mentioned here, it's sad that so many people over look it especially since that was the first time Murasame Castle was ever playable here in the West.
    and FYI Takamarus re-design in SW3 is the best ever its a concrete fact and anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
