Thank you. We have plenty of "content creators" and "influencers". It's so refreshing to hear someone doing a review that didn't just get a loaner camera for the weekend. And actually makes a living chasing moments :-)
In my opinion, this was one of the best camera reviews I've seen. It wasn't entertaining or fun or whatever. The reviewer just tried, as hard as he could, to pass on his impressions connected to his preferences and goals. That's a hard sell for some people looking for "objective comparisons" (number of features x price, for example), but I think this kind of reviews are the most objective of all, because photography is not, for most people at least, an enginnering quandary, but a means to capture a moment that's meaningful to yourself and, hopefully, to some others. Not everyone will like our photos, our cameras or us. But that's perfectly ok.
Yes, there seems to be a lot of anger in the armchair photographer community, which is saddening. We have more options than ever to choose what gear works best for us, and I for one, think that's pretty cool! If money were no issue (and my tired, old eyes were a bit better), I would love to have an M-10P with a 50 Sumilux. Just because I have always wanted a Leica and after holding one for a short while, feels great in the hand. Thanks for the amazing images you create and for being a champion of quickly vanishing wildlife. All the best and safe travels!
I agree with you Stan, I don't see why people are so negative or perhaps it's just the people that tend to comment tend to be angry. It's been extremely refreshing to see so much positivity on RUclips compared to the PetaPixel commenters.
I just ordered my M11-D. I have been undecided since its launch in Sept but after watching your video on the 10-D, I made the jump. I was undecided between the glossy black M11 and D. The D won. I very much look forward to using it in my coming trip to the UK.
Love to hear it , keep me posted on how you like using it . Give yourself some time to get used to it and try to pay attention to how it makes your photography experience difference.
I have watched this clip like more than 5 five times and finally I was about to acquire pre-owned M10-D that the owner only used for 6 months and I really got a great deal and you are the reason that I dropped M10-P/R consideration and now I only got this Camera for a week and absolutely loving it! I was worried about formatting SD card as you mentioned and am happy to report that the current Leica Foto App is now about to format the card over the iPhone App ! I really appreciate how this M10-D keep me 'in present', 'in the flow', 'focusing on the subject instead of my LCD screen....' , simple, simple, simple. less, less, less. It really has everything that I need to shoot a photo, and a good photo .... yes 'limitation' sparks 'creativity' is very true that apply all facets of our lives ... I just learned that M10-D now has been discontinued to prepare more capacity for M10P/R/Monochrome .... I'm happy that after 4 months of waiting for a one.. my Leica dealer found one is almost like a brand new one. Thank you Justin for posting this review, and i'll share my M10-D journey !
Wow, best comment I've received so far, I'm smiling ear to ear. I've truly loved my first year with the M10-D and I must say I'm sad to see it discontinued but at the same time I'm not worried because I'm sure this one will last for years to come. The camera isn't for everyone and I don't mean that in an elitist way, I just mean it takes a photographer who likes to think and shoot a very specific way. I'm so happy you are happy with your purchase and please do stay in touch.
@@AskMOTT Thanks for your comment, it means a lot to me. Now I'm working hard to see if I can get a 35mm/lux to replace my summicron.... What is the brand of the strap that you are using? it looks very solid one... my last take on LCD screen.... LCD=Lose Concentration Display/Device/Distraction ..... and I can only say that for myself. I shot XPRO 3, so 70% of time i would never flipped open that hidden LCD panel.... but when it is there for me to flip open.... it gets into my head.... and to this date.... i still do not know most extra functions available to me... and the LCD panel has sign telling me something is 'locked' in my camera, after 6 months, i still do not know what happened ..what has been locked and how to unlock.... sign.. ... initially I really love my XPRO 3 and sometimes I still shoot it because I really don't have to think too much, it would figured out everything for me..... and it can really made me lazy, more scary thing is, it gave me some illusion when a great shot is made and I actually was not the one who made it ..XPRO 3 made it for me ... I was never sure how 'conscious' I was making that shot.... and this M10D really made me aware and think... I'm not a professional photographer, and not even close as proper photographer. I'm a corporate HR executive who wants to use my photo to raise the voice of our employees, tell the stories about our talents and those heroes in the middle, highlight the future vision and explore potential of our organisation from A to B.... i just subscribed your newsletter and will keep learning from you and your work. - Andrew
@@warior around 5.3K USD/42K HKD with whole package and papers in place. Yes, it is difficult to find and I was simply lucky to find one and with a good price too as there were not many around and people who will buy this niche model to begin with probably will not trade in easily either... just be patient and inform all your Leica agents that you are waiting for M10D, it may show up unexpected one day.
Loved the review. amazing energy, and loved how instead of speaking in generalities with regard to how “we” feel, you spoke about how you feel and how these things impact you. Let’s F’ing Go! Keep pushing
The pictures you showed in your report, was simply stunning, emotional and evocative. This camera really fits your working methods and eye. Thank you for those stunning pics and great review.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the M10-D. Just found your channel. Always good to see fellow M-D shooters. I fully agree with your statement on having more energy for photography when you don't constantly chimp on your screen. Fully immersion and being in the moment. Fun little bonus section :) I heard all of the comments you read myself.
The M Photography only a few of out there , we need a club :). I must admit it was scary taking this camera on a paid assignment but I was thrilled with the results.
@@AskMOTT yeah. Your shots are solid. I guess once you understand the M fully and how the light meter works you can trust yourself on commercial jobs with the M-D.
I’ve been shooting the MP for over a year now (my first Leica), and recently decided to buy an M10-D. I found a relatively good deal for a second hand one at the store in Wetzlar. I have no idea why I’ll need two cameras, but I wanted a digital camera for my Leica lenses and this was the obvious choice for me. Been following both of you.
Hey M and @Justin Mott - just picked up an M-D tonight after having used an M240 and M246 for a while (and an M6 for longer). Love both of y'alls channels and your videos (M-D and M10-D) were both inspiring and helped me with my decision to move to the M-D ecosystem. I'd join that club if you're still forming it! 🤣
For me as a non-professional but had used the Leica M6 TTL in the 1990s and now using a Sony RX1 for a while. I miss the thrill of taking the pictures and not to know the outcomes after coming back home and look at the developed slides. This kind of photography really slow me down and make me think before taking a shot. Now approaching 60, I am really want to get this M10-D to relive the moments that I had with my M6 TTL years ago. Great review. I need more review on this model.
I really love that surprise Tuan, it’s so nice to be in the moment and so much fun to actually see the photos for the first time on my laptop after a full day of shooting.
Thanks for watching Riswan, lot of gear reviews this week for me but I can't wait to be in the field again photographing wildlife and filming so new vlogs in the wild.
@@AskMOTT one of the reasons i love your video, it is based on your shooting experience, not like reviewing a products! Hahaha admiring your photos, wish im nearby to see your gallery in person
@@riswanc Thanks Riswan, I'll dabble in some products that I stand behind but yeah it will mainly be my experiences working. I appreciate you watching, help me spread the word if you have a moment.
You are crazy! I like you! I love your work! Please keep on! I‘m actual in the process of reducing my gear, curious to see if I will reach your level of simplification 😎
Justin, I recent came across your vblog. I love your passion and I sympathize with you enthusiasm for the M10-D. I have a Sony RX1rm2 which also makes me slow down but rewards me with superb images when I do. I like to shoot without chimping...You just need to be confident in your technique and, as you imply, with that confidence comes a release from all the unnecessary complexity of modern cameras. Such cameras remind me of my Contax G2 film camera which I took around the world for many years. And 35mm focal length is my favorite. Clearly, this doesn't suit every style of photography, but...you just keep on stylin'. Your pictures are terrific. Best, John
Thanks for sharing your story John and thank you for the kind words. It’s funny how my passion for the M10D can also spark so much anger from people , but oh well, you either appreciate the camera or you don’t :)
Love how you coined the phrase "Chasing moments not megapixels". I had been chasing megapixels over the last 10 years, and learned to finally slow down with a Leica. Great review!
Thanks Daniel, I must admit I was proud of that one :). Glad to hear you slowed down, makes all the difference in what you see and how you see it and most importantly how you capture it all.
Your work speaks for itself. The camera is just a tool, but if you're making art, it has to be an extension of yourself. It has to get the hell out of the way, give you a great image, and make you feel like you're free to concentrate on what matters. I shot with a 50mm for three years before I went to a 24-70 for a three year project, and now I shoot a 35mm. That's it.
Just got my first Leica. A used Leica T. Can’t wait to start shooting when my lens gets in! Thanks for sharing your work. I really dig listening to a professional photographer.
Brilliant review thank you, just about to jump into digital M's (I have an M6), and having seen your review think this'll be the M10-D, thanks again, great work, love the website.
Love your analysis mate. I think you’ve captured the purity of photography. God I wish some of the other mainstream brands make a camera like the M10-D at a more attractive price point. Thanks for sharing Justin. CHeers
Thank Raymond, the comments here are much nicer than the ones from my original review posted on PetaPixel. How do you like your M10D and what kind of photography do you shooters with it?
@@AskMOTT As I grow older, I tend to shoot much slower. Mainly Street shots, but I tend to look at angles that is not obvious to others. I also like landscape shots alot. I owe an M6 as well, but like you, I don't enjoy the process of developing or waiting for the development of the film. When the photographer is using the manual setting on the Leica camera, he should be able to "developed" the image in his mind. So, there is no need for the LCD at the back.
Justin, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Your self banter, energy, honesty, and humility are refreshing. And also I love and respect your professional passions and projects. Your wildlife images and the portraits of their caretakers are more like ‘family’ portraits than wildlife documentary photos to me. For no other reason than they are so - intimate. Now, I am not a professional photog. I’m a Theologian, Educator and and photog enthusiast. Photography has become my passion. And just recently I was introduced to Leica. So I started with Nikon. Converted first to the Fuji X and later Fuji GFX systems. And as much as I’d become a Fujifilm fanboy - especially after the GFX I still longed for the MF pleasure that I first discovered using the Nikon D700 and later, my beloved Nikon Df. So my journey has evolved like this. Love of MF came from Nikon. Appreciation for size from Fujifilm. Appreciation for exquisite glass from old Nikon glass and new Zeiss lenses. And when you mix all that together out pops Leica. I sold my entire GFX kit and replaced it with the Typ246 and the SL2. I love B&W but sold my 246 last week and replaced it with the older M9. I specifically wanted the CCD sensor. And now I’m preparing to sell the SL2 and replace that with the M10R. Why? Because I haven’t touched the SL2 in weeks. The M simply has a more tactile and enjoyable feel in my hands Yes, the SL2 is technically superior and is and wonderful camera ,but I’m making myself shoot it. I miss my M. “Stay Safe and Be Blessed.’, Chaps
Thank you for taking the time to write to me Chaps and thank you for the kind words. The journey to finding the perfect camera can be funny and expensive and it's always evolving as we do as humans and photographers. I started with an M6 film camera over a decade ago and now here I am back to the M system and I just love it. Good luck with the M10-R, I'm sure you're going to love it.
Great Review - Justin did exactly as the title intimated, and, added impressions and lived experiences as well as some samples... Perfect marks. As a hobbyist, I am not in the same league, however I fully understand the minimalist concept. I carried a Leica X1 on my belt and shot in SAm for 6 weeks and came back with very worthy material that was very easy to edit because it captured so well. Fellow photographers were impressed, so, I would say I was very content. So intuitive to work with dials and just plain fun ! And, obviously the M10 -D is on another level, but if the entry level is so good, then wow ! My other camera is a Canon 5D MkIII.
I bought a pre-owned M-P 240 with a 35 Summicron this spring to figure out if the Leica system is for me, both professionally as a photographing journalist (not a photojournalist, that is out of my league) and in my personal life. Probably it is, I can tell by now. But so far I get enough thrill from turning the rear screen off now and then. Great review. Don’t listen to the haters.
Thank you so much for sharing. Due to vision issues, I had to sell my Leica Ms and switch to an autofocus z7 mirrorless camera. Still, I travel light on assignment and focus on telling the story.
Very thoughtful review of why you like this camera. Bonus content was hilarious. The thought process this camera forces on the user is the reason to buy this camera. Like you say it's not for everybody.
thank you for that video. I agree with all you say. I like shooting with my Leica for the same reason : simplicity, discretion... don't worry for negative comments and continue !
The answer to the “hater” who complained that the photos were soft is simply this. The late and great Cartier Bresson once said “focus is s&*t”. ‘Nuff said!
I do agree with most of what you said and finally you and Burling inspired me to buy the Leica M D ! Keep up the good work and btw subscribed to your channel. I do own the GR III as well and others as reserve cams.....
Beautiful review trying to stress what’s actually important - how an artistic tool affects you. That’s the most important factor by far for making anything creatively. Also thumbs up for mentioning the shutter, I’m the same and use the M10M. And the main reason I didn’t get the M11 is that has a different shutter which works and sounds completely differently (open closed open closed open, for one pic instead of closed open closed as with M10 and earlier). Because the M11 measures light from the sensor instead of the classic style of reflected light. I used a 500cm with black and white film for 20 years and got the Leica M10 Monochrom because I didn’t want to get distracted by the possibility of colour. The ultimate camera would be the M10D Monochrome haha
Hi Justin! I'm planning on making a video about how I've been receiving hate by other photographers for being a Leica user and I found your video. I loved what you said and I would like to ask you if I can use a small part of this video just for a real example. Is it ok for you? Of course, I will credit you and your channel. By the way, I loved this picture 4:47
TENGU sure thing Tengu, don’t let the hate get to. The best way to counter the hate is to go out and take amazing images while they spend their time complaining and not improving on their craft.
I love using the M10M and M10R and I completely get the minimalist angle on the M10-D, but the workflow does matter. The inability to format the card on the camera itself is a no go for me. I don't use the app as I found it a battery drain, but a good feature to add would be to format the card via your phone. I also get the self imposed limits and the desire to eliminate temptations but the uplift for that seems excessive, like many Leica things. But being a Leica user is a philosophical choice and the limits do force you to be deliberate, attentive, and I do enjoy that most of all.
Robert Stacy thanks for your comments Robert. I should clarify that you can format your card within the app , but you can’t format it if that card is coming from a camera system other than the M system. It’s a very strange glitch and it doesn’t happen every time but often enough to annoy me.
Thanks. That’s helpful should I get the crazy notion to buy another Leica. Regardless of which one there is nothing like it in terms of forcing you to own your results: good or bad. Also, totally agree on film being a drag to process. Can’t speak for the rendering on the M10-D but the M10-M and M10-R deliver the same joy I felt shooting Tri-X and Provia transparencies when I did shoot film. Nice work by the way.
Hi Justin, I love your work. You mentioned in your review that you have issues with formating the SD-card bij the M10_D. Did you solved that? I have the same issue here (bought the m10d last week) and I wonder if there is already a fix.
The work arounds I found were using a dedicated sd card only for your M10D, formatting on another M10 if you happen to have one or getting formatting software for your desktop and formatting using that after your cards been used in another camera. My advice , use a dedicated sd card that you only use w your Leica and don’t use it on other cameras, not even another Leica Like a Q or an SL.
Love your video Justin. The feeling when you start shooting with the 10-D is kind of.. diving into water from the next height. You feel nervous and apprehensive, wait for quite a while, but when you take the dive it feels so great! It is so true that you get much more present in the moment of the story you are telling when you use an "analog" camera again. I love mine - Using Summilux 50, but might pick up a used 35 as well. Bought mine for a book project, but damned covid put a stop to travels... Love your work on conservation- keep it up! Stay healthy!
Wonderful camera and I get it. Now I'm using the Fuji X100f (a poor man's Leica) and after watching your video going manual no back screen apart from focusing. I've used split image cameras before and the Fuji does not give a clear enough split image unlike the Canon Canonet QL 19 a wonderful film camera with a fixed 45mm lens built in 1964. Leica and especially the Leica M10D is my dream camera. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with your business. It's good to have dreams.
I wish I have the courage to work with only one lens. I do a lot of corporate and event photography and frequently I find myself in tight corners where I have no choice but to resort to using a super wide, or I will be in situations where the subject is too far and I really need to zoom in. Clients here frequently have various demands and I can’t see how I could work with only a 35mm lens. Maybe if I am doing reportage style where I have time to think? Kudos to you for that. Leica M series have always been on my dream list ever since the film era, but I just couldn’t justify spending on one due to the scope of work I am doing.
Thanks Andy, yeah I use more than one lens for my hotel work , it’s a must. For my personal and editorial assignment work I’ve made it work for me , but it took some time :)
New sub here. Thanks for a great genuine review. The Q2 got me in to the Leica ecosystem, and now, a beautiful black M10 + 50mm Summilux is helping me “chasing moments” ;-). That strap though…. You have to share what it is, looks so good.
Hello Fred, thanks for subscribing. I dig the Q system, I tried out the first one and I while I liked it, I didn't love it. However the Q2 seems pretty awesome. For straps I use these www.barton1972.com love them but I'm trying to get away from using leather.
@@AskMOTT yeah, that leather strap must not be ideal when shooting outside in very hot weather. My next M lens will be a 35 (yup, your preferred one) Still debating Summilux vs Summicron. I do a lot of travel photog and the weight of the cron is on the plus side. That 1.4 aperture of the lux though…
Hi, I enjoyed your video! Currently deciding between an MD (262) and M10-D. How is battery life for you? Do you need a lot of spares when on assignment? Thank you.
Thanks for your question Michael. The battery is pretty average. I find 3 get me through a full day shooting but if you keep the wifi on frequently or by accident you will drain it quickly.
Can you set up the Auto-ISO range and min shutter speed from the App? How about which exposure method? I have my M240 set up to just use classic with LV off so it just uses the built in light meter and not the sensor, and it's much faster shooting that way. I love the idea of this camera so long as you can set up some things from the app. I really do wish they would have made the film advance actually re-cock the shutter instead of just a "thumb grip".
I've wanted the M10-D since it released. Now, I am struggling whether I still want the M10-D or go with a M10-P. The D is around $6500 and the P is $5800 on the used market. I rarely use the screen on my current Nikon and Fuji cameras.
@@AskMOTT Thanks for the response. I've been shooting with the Nikon Z fc and and a manual focus lens. The screen on the Z fc can flip closed so it also looks similar to an older film camera. I only shoot it that way, so I really am not dependent on a screen right now. I do like the screen for the menu, though. Is the wifi still finicky or has it got better. A lot of the reviews from 2-3 years ago complained about the wifi connection.
Great work Justin. Do you ever use an external EVF at all for any purpose ? Reason for asking is I’m thinking of getting the original M-D (typ 262) and of course you can’t use an external EVF with that model. Other than that the differences in the 2 models don’t seem significant so wondering if you have ever felt it necessary to use on the M10-D. Cheers !
Thanks for your question Graham. Very rarely have I ever felt the need for an EVF, if ever. Perhaps once or twice when I was trying to get a super close shot or when I use my Leica Elpro adapter, but I typically only use that macro adapter on my back up camera M10 for special shots.
Great discussioni. Leica Q2 shooter here - love that camera - still evaluating what M10 I would be best suited for. In the meantime, I'm using a Fujifilm X-Pro3 which brings the "absence of a back screen" experience for a little less money. Although it is busier than the Leica from a feature perspective it does bring you a part of the way there with regards to composing with the viewfinder, manual controls, etc. It's a baby step for those who aren't completely sure that no screen is for them. You can always use M lenses on it as well so any investment is not wasted should you choose to upgrade.
Joe Zobkiw That Q2 is a nice camera , those files must be great to print. I tried out the Q1 as a backup camera but it felt a little flimsy for me so I went w a used M10 in silver for assignment work back up camera.
Got one too, love it, use it professionally also. I really like the film wind lever. At the end of the day as you know its using what works for you, I use it with a 50mm Lux. I have a Q2 and a second body which I also adore as I love the 28mm lux lens and the macro feature. Honest review, in the end who cares what others think if your clients are happy thats what pays the bills.
Nick Tapsell I tried the Q1 and the SL1 as possible 2nd cameras and I liked them both quite a bit but in the end I went with an M10 and M10D for consistency.
@@AskMOTT Totally get that. I had an SL which was great as was the Q but now the buttons on the rear are the same on the version 2's they all tie in really well but it is true it is even better if you are just using an M10 x 2. Although the SL2 with a L-M mount is also extremely tempting as a 1st or 2nd body.
Love your approach Justin and your work. Honest question though, why didn't you get a second M10D rather then the M10 so you have seamless interchangeability? FYI I have M9s foortunate to have 3 all with replaced sensors so I know the value of Less is More. PS not a Pro.
Thanks for watching and for the question. I did consider it but for my personal project I’m using the Leica Elpro macro adapter and sometimes I’m dealing w really focusing situations I pull out the M10 just to be sire. Essentially it’s my Macro/tough focusing situation camera along w being my back up camera for emergencies.
I totally understand how many can have sticker shock over a Leica camera and how we try and play it off that x brand is just as good or what ever self reasoning we come up with. However shooting with a camera you love to use and love to create with ...... Is hard to put a price tag on. I have seen people with a love of a plastic holga camera make some really good images. Just understanding your equipment (like going out with just one lens) can really improve your ability. I am one who can not afford a Leica system. However I do have a camera some may say is sub pare but I love creating with it. So I am happy.
LOL love the troll session at the end bonus feature and so funny. I bet if you tried to give any of those haters that rig not one would refuse it! Duane Michaels once said something to the effect of the difference between the artist and the photographer is a sense of control. The M10D is that and the first camera that has me looking at it thinking finally I can move on from my M6-original owner of it by the way and it has had the same 35 cron on it for 29 years! My back end issue is chemistry and proper disposal of it. My blood type is HC-110 by now LOL
the most chill photographer i known in photography point and shoot and hes done! while me point shoot checking the screen🤣 next video take us to the black room we want to see how you do the image process ☺️
Really great video. I am a bit confused about the sd card situation. I have heard that you can format a card in the Fotos app. Is that a recent fix or do you still need to format on a computer? Also, this may be a dumb question but figured I would ask it anyway, there is a built-in light meter, correct?
Hi there Justin, love your video's and photo's it's inspiring me! maby a stupid beginning documentary photographer, but do you really need to use a uv filter?(protection)
Not a stupid question all, thanks for asking. I use UV filter (protection only ) because I don't use lens caps(for speed reasons) and one scratch on your glass and it's over, it's a nice insurance policy. I've cracked a few UV filters, saved me thousands of dollars.
New subsriber Justin! Great video! Loved you're energy and enthusiasm. I would love the idea of having an M10D. Hopefully, sometime down the road. For now, I loooooove shooting film. I just made the switch over to Film from digital a year and a half ago. And I think whenever I get sick of it, IF i get sick of it. The M10D is the way to go. I'm sure i'm in the minority such as yourself in preferring no screen at all. Also, I have a youtube channel myself, and I learned not to give ANY ENERGY to negative comments. It's energy sucking man. Just energy sucking. I hate that negativity. So I actually cut out the video after 2 comments at the end hahaha. But kudos to you for sticking through it :)
jae rose Thanks man , I wish I had the patience to develop my own film, who knows, maybe one day. A buddy of mine is starting to develop at his house and he’s living the process.
The shutter sounds slow on the Hasselblad just sounds slow because it's a leaf shutter built into the lens instead of the camera. The leaf shutter allows for faster sync speeds when using flash.
Thanks Justin, great real hands on review. The small Wotankraft you show in it with two straps looks ideal size, is this a Trooper medium as on their site that looks bigger. The small Trooper has only one strap? Yours looks perfect size for one M, too many bags already so don't want to order the wrong one!
Great stuff Justin. Made me give it some serious consideration. I have an M9 and some lenses. So much negativity in the world, just let it wash over you. Cheers from Australia.
Thanks for watching James, the M9 is a great camera as well and something few people talk about is how well Leica's hold their value, in some cases even increase in value.
Hi there! Love the review and the camera as well as what you do with it, I’d love to have one but I’m still with the M240 and I love it as well. Keep up the good work. Cheers, André
Fantastic images Justin, thanks for sharing. Inspirational!! I can't believe how many people are doing nice reviews of Leica kit but the images they post are often absolutely terrible.
Thanks Martin, I agree about what you said , true for many camera companies. When I collaborating w Canon I noticed they’d release new cameras and lenses and show sample photos by a “pro” photographer and they were typically dull. Never understood that , give the photographer time to try it out properly and give it to a photographer who doesn’t need everything to be perfect in some far away exotic place to take a nice photo.
Hi Justin, Thanks for sharing your great reviews. As a seasoned professional, you are 100% legit and you really pass the feelings instead of numbers. I use Leicas for the last 50 years (M2-M4, M4-2, M4-P, M6, M8, M9 since september 9th 2009. Summilux 35 asph and a 1970 Elmar 50 which I really love for portraits. I agree totally with your vision and apprehension of photography. Please keep on reviewing!! BTW, the leather strap you have on your M10D is awesome. Could you tell the brand? Best regards
Wow, that’s an impressive amount of time with Leica :). Thanks for sharing your story with me and thanks for taking the the time to comment, I appreciate that. I get my straps from these guys www.barton1972.com/camerastrap
@@AskMOTT Thanks very much!! Yes, my first summer job in 1976 paid a second hand M2 and a 50mm collapsible 3.5 if I remember well .. I love street photography. Your pictures are beautiful. Best regards,
very nice video, have fun with your Leica M10D, i was traveling a lot , mostly with Leica R4, Canon EOS20D and Leica D-Lux, i was buying my M9 in 2017 and i regret a lot why i did not buy this camera in 2009, many pics have been much better using this one ... for me, traveling with a Leica M is a great and special experience, and i see on your pictures, for you too :D
How do you set the self timer? about half of my stuff is on a tripod. I have an m262 which is like the M-D but has a screen for reviewing images. The M-10D is a very attractive camera for certain.
Great video and new subscriber. I don't get the hate about Leica. No one is telling people they have to like them or must own one but people get so worked up. I recently purchased an m10 and I feel it's a very close process to film in terms of capturing images (what I was doing before). The machine itself is beautiful too, oozing German manufacturing quality. Good luck with the channel!
I don't get it either Jay, perhaps it's just people that equate price to megapixels and features and don't care much about aesthetic and how a camera can shape you as a storyteller.
I’ve always thought that the addition of the traditional looking M3 film advance lever as a thumb arrest was genius. I don’t know why Leica doesn’t offer this on all of their modern digital models, instead we have to use those thumb supports… seems like such an oversight on Leica’s part
Hi Justin, Jose from Puerto Rico. I just subscribed to your channel. You said a phrase that sums it up: "This just works for me", and even though you're a working pro, you're enjoying the art. Folks get all caught up on and feel that everything has to be justified. Did you mug someone and steal their money to buy your camera? Nope. (Well at least I hope not). So there you have it! If it makes you feel good and as bonus folks are willing to pay you for your art, that's the icing on the cake. Some folks will spend 80 million on a Van Gogh painting that can be destroyed and never recover it. But it makes them feel good, so who are we to judge?
Hello from Vietnam Jose, I didn't actually mug someone I just beat them up and their camera happened to fall into my bag :). The backlash is comical to me but I suppose it's better to be different than normal :).
Amazing camera!! And it is great that it is working for you. Shame you have to go thought all those negative comments and educate those sad people why is this camera worth picking up. I would get it as well. Well done 👍
Great stuff. I agree with your logic on not having a screen on the back. The M-D 262 is what I'm looking for although yours looks great. As for price, if you can write it off then the hit to your pocket is really negligible. Justin, what's your "I want to get artistic lens?" Yea, the "ART" lens moniker turns my stomach.
Never had that issue with formatting after use in other cameras. I use Canon 1DXMKII, CanonR5, Leica M10 and Leica Q2. Im even able to see the pictures on screen shot on different Leicas. What Card do you use? If its any other that SanDisk then thats you real problem. Personal work here, all shot on Leica. instagram.com/stefanlangstrup/ Commercial work here www.stocksy.com/Flamingoimages
Thanks for sharing your experience, and your work Stefan. I was using SanDisk and still had the issues, unfortunately. My work around w a desktop format was the only way to resolve it. I think the issue w me was Leica M10-D specific.
Thank you. We have plenty of "content creators" and "influencers". It's so refreshing to hear someone doing a review that didn't just get a loaner camera for the weekend. And actually makes a living chasing moments :-)
JK Lockwood Thank you JK for watching. Yeah, I’ll only be doing reviews on gear I actually use.
I appreciate that Ricardo, I like to speak personally from my experience on how I use the camera speficically and why it works for me :).
couldn't more agree
So nice to see a talented actual working photographer talking about gear.
Nick Devlin Thank you Nick, I’ve been having fun making these episodes and hearing feedback like yours motivates to do more.
Your work displayed here is just fantastic. Well done!
Than you Kris, I appreciate you watching.
Hey Justin, great review! You’re a phenomenal photographer, far as I’m concerned. Hope to see more content on your channel.
Hatef Yamini thank you so much Hatef, I appreciate your kind words.
- Andrew

Im loking for a M10-D but cant find one.. Im woundering what was the asking price for the 6month old M10-D
Thanks so much Jaron, you got me fired up!!!
The pictures you showed in your report, was simply stunning, emotional and evocative. This camera really fits your working methods and eye. Thank you for those stunning pics and great review.
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Awesome !!!. A simple and heartfelt review that points out the esoteric experience of a Leica.
Thank you for watching Marc :).
@@bryancaporicci901 Hey Bryan. Thanks. So nice to hear that you bought an M-D. Enjoy….
Dream camera for me. Love your content.
Thank you ClawDawg, love your handle and I've got so many questions about it :).
Thanks justin, love your wild photography... i agree with you when you said limiting yourself...
Fantastic review by pro-photographer. Don’t worry about negative people. Your photos a great man and I love this camera.
Thanks so much, love this camera too :).
You are crazy! I like you! I love your work!
Please keep on!
I‘m actual in the process of reducing my gear, curious to see if I will reach your level of simplification 😎
Thank you for liking my craziness Ralf :).
Too much hate nowadays Justin. Keep up the amazing work. You're living a life MANY of these kids leaving negative comments can only dream of. cheers
Thanks Pepe, much appreciated :).
One of the best camera reviews on RUclips. I completely agree with your technical and emotional analysis of the fabulous Leica M ;-)
I appreciate that Carl, when it comes to Leica you need to talk about emotions :).
That's it.
Thank you for saying that and thanks for watching.
Just got my first Leica. A used Leica T. Can’t wait to start shooting when my lens gets in! Thanks for sharing your work. I really dig listening to a professional photographer.
Congrats Mark and thanks for watching.
Brilliant review thank you, just about to jump into digital M's (I have an M6), and having seen your review think this'll be the M10-D, thanks again, great work, love the website.
Much appreciated Clive, let me know how it goes when you get the camera :).
Mate I love ya work 👌🏽 I’m hoping to get a Leica one day
Love your analysis mate. I think you’ve captured the purity of photography. God I wish some of the other mainstream brands make a camera like the M10-D at a more attractive price point. Thanks for sharing Justin. CHeers
Thank you so much I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I suppose Fuji makes the next closest thing.
Totally agree with your comment. Exactly the same reason why I bought the M10D. Outstanding photos!
Love your images, thanks for the review. I’m going to be keeping my eye out for your future projects
Thank you Brian, I'm working on bringing my photography projects to RUclips and I'm still experimenting with the best way to do that.
Great review - straight talk, no chaser! Passion for your work, passion for your tools = craftsmanship.
I appreciate that Quinton, thank you.
“Stay Safe and Be Blessed.’,
Chaps
Thank you for taking the time to write to me Chaps and thank you for the kind words. The journey to finding the perfect camera can be funny and expensive and it's always evolving as we do as humans and photographers. I started with an M6 film camera over a decade ago and now here I am back to the M system and I just love it. Good luck with the M10-R, I'm sure you're going to love it.
Lovely review Justin, i think the same as you. Thinking of getting one of these cameras
Thanks Brian, I've really enjoyed the process of working with this camera and how it has forced me to be more thoughtful and work at a slower pace.
Thank you Marcel, I just love the simplicity of this camera, i can't say enough good things about it.
My pleasure Carrie Ann, thanks for watching :).
Very thoughtful review of why you like this camera. Bonus content was hilarious. The thought process this camera forces on the user is the reason to buy this camera. Like you say it's not for everybody.
Thank you for watching Phil, I couldn't resist responding to those comments :).
thank you for that video. I agree with all you say. I like shooting with my Leica for the same reason : simplicity, discretion... don't worry for negative comments and continue !
Thanks Tony, appreciate the mind words :).
The answer to the “hater” who complained that the photos were soft is simply this. The late and great Cartier Bresson once said “focus is s&*t”. ‘Nuff said!
Ha ha well said :)
Awesome review Justin. Loved it!!
Thank you Manu, glad you enjoyed it. Are you a Leica user?
@@AskMOTT Yep i just joined the Leica family with a Leica Q. Been shooting with Fuji for a while.

I do own the GR III as well and others as reserve cams.....
That's great to hear Hans, thanks for commenting and best of the luck with your new camera :).
People would really go nuts if Leica made that though hahaha no screen AND no colour! XD
I like your Leica too. They are wonderful to use.
Thanks Mark.
Hi Justin,
I love your work. You mentioned in your review that you have issues with formating the SD-card bij the M10_D. Did you solved that? I have the same issue here (bought the m10d last week) and I
wonder if there is already a fix.
Thank you for watching Gjerrmund, funny that you have the 50mm and considering the 35mm and I've got the 35mm and I'm considering getting a 50mm :).
It makes highly sense .. I do agree 💁🏼
Amazing photos! Now I want one Thanks!
Thanks Dolph, you won't regret it :).

Great review, great pics! Also Love the M10-D, for the same reasons you do!
I just took a look @ your homepage. I think your pictures are beautiful ! Thanks for your M10d input
Damir Zrno Thank you Damir, I appreciate that :).
Thank you very much!
It’s a tough one, the no screen thing has a commitment and it’s not for everyone , but I’m happy w it.
Love that camera strap. What make is it please?
Thanks Jason, it’s a Barton 1972 www.barton1972.com
Wow. What a cool guy. Why so few subscribers? Love your videos.
Thank you Arturo, I just got back into vlogging so I’m hoping to grow my audience more :).
Probably (and hopefully ) because he is busy being a successful, professional photographer.
Although the SL2 with a L-M mount is also extremely tempting as a 1st or 2nd body.
had the Md and it was liberating. today back to film M ( M4-2) but soon I will jump back to this digital analog camera. it is so liberating.
Nice to hear from fellow M10D shooters out there, wish they didn't discontinue it.
Amen :).
Really great vlog and you're a decent guy. I love the way you took on the haters and turned their bile into entertainment! 👏
the most chill photographer i known in photography point and shoot and hes done! while me point shoot checking the screen🤣 next video take us to the black room we want to see how you do the image process ☺️
My post processing isn’t that sexy , but I’ll think about it Haariri.
The shutter sounds faster compare to the shutter on the hasselblad x1d Il.
The shutter sounds slow on the Hasselblad just sounds slow because it's a leaf shutter built into the lens instead of the camera. The leaf shutter allows for faster sync speeds when using flash.
Are there meters in the viewfinder? How do you know the exposure?
Thanks Justin, great real hands on review. The small Wotankraft you show in it with two straps looks ideal size, is this a Trooper medium as on their site that looks bigger. The small Trooper has only one strap? Yours looks perfect size for one M, too many bags already so don't want to order the wrong one!
Great video ! 👍🏻
You rock Alaz, thanks for watching my friend.
Cheers, André
andreo photography much love back Andre, thanks for watching and enjoy that M240, it’s an incredible camera as well.
nice review! i use m240 and would love the 262 or m10-d, totally agree on your point of view... cheers
Hi Justin,
Thanks for sharing your great reviews.
Best regards,
@@AskMOTT Whip Pitch black ordered!!
I like your photo and you!
thank you , I appreciate that :).
very nice video, have fun with your Leica M10D, i was traveling a lot , mostly with Leica R4, Canon EOS20D and Leica D-Lux, i was buying my M9 in 2017 and i regret a lot why i did not buy this camera in 2009, many pics have been much better using this one ... for me, traveling with a Leica M is a great and special experience, and i see on your pictures, for you too :D
Thanks Oliver, I love the whole Leica M system experience.
Leicas cost more but the satisfaction that comes from their high quality is priceless.
Agree Thomas , thanks for commenting.
How do you set the self timer? about half of my stuff is on a tripod.
I have an m262 which is like the M-D but has a screen for reviewing images.
The M-10D is a very attractive camera for certain.
You can Use the Fotos App- you can trigger the shutter remotely- a solution for the absence of the rear screen for rear screen weanys
Question about the Leica M10-D, can the Visoflex be used to operate the complete menu of the camera?
Great talk mate!
I'd really like to have a M10(d), but what about my eye sight, with glasses I have - 1.5
Is their a save way for a solution?
Forget about all the negative comments about leica - you are brave to answer them - I would just delete them
Thanks Roberto, I typically just reply with a positive comment and throws people off but if it's vulgar I delete or ignore :).
... enjoyed the review, thanks :)
Thank you for watching Charles.
Another nice video, thanks!
All you need for your Leica and photo journey is M10D + 35 Summilux. Great one lens set up that frees up your mind and lets you create art.
Zeeshan Khan lovely shot you sent me on Instagram :)
Enjoyed this review!
Thank you :)
Well done 👍
Thank you Michael, it was pretty funny to get all those negative comments but oh well :).
Infact... I may just watch it again as it was so good!!
And your pics are great!
Thank you Frank.
Loved the photos and the enthusiasm! F*** the haters :D
Thank you Sam and yeah F*** them :).
Never had that issue with formatting after use in other cameras. I use Canon 1DXMKII, CanonR5, Leica M10 and Leica Q2. Im even able to see the pictures on screen shot on different Leicas. What Card do you use? If its any other that SanDisk then thats you real problem.
Personal work here, all shot on Leica. instagram.com/stefanlangstrup/

Thanks for sharing your experience, and your work Stefan. I was using SanDisk and still had the issues, unfortunately. My work around w a desktop format was the only way to resolve it. I think the issue w me was Leica M10-D specific.
