    When you have too many automatics and have to deal with the constant somehow boring hour/date setting procedure you end up valuing the practicality of an everyday quartz watch. I love my autos but I have absolutely nothing against quartz watches because they are lighter, cheaper and more practical option, especially for a non-enthusiast person. I am also in need of "cleaning out" my collection a bit, otherwise I would probably be interested in some of your watches, amazing pieces! Nice video!

      Thanks man I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the video! We're on the same page! I love my mechanical watches and they'll always remain special but yeah the idea of a watch that doesn't need to be wound and remains super accurate is super appealing to me. Quartz technology is pretty cool as well so quartz will always have space in my collection.
      Glad you liked the watches for sale but looool looks like we're all in need for some early spring cleaning!

      I'd agree. The solar quartz is one of the main reasons I would pick this one up.

    As a person who recently had a kid and purged most of his watches, I fully support this scoring. As someone who works on cars, hikes, lifts weights, does yard work, swims, etc on a regular basis, I think quartz should score higher!

    Love the SNE's but hate the bulky clasp, it's long and doesnt flex around a smaller wrist. So YES, add my vote for Uncle Seiko to make some compatible aftermarket bracelets that fit SNE--would love a Beads of Rice.

    Great video. I wish more manufacturers would realize that sub 40mm watches are desirable if done right. And they also need to make more titanium cases. SS is fine, but there are better, lighter materials out there that wont cost much more to produce.

    i was a mechanical watch snob for decades, but now i agree with you. i'm sick of watchwinders, and still having to reset mechanicals. and then the cost of servicing even low cost movements. solar quartz is excellent, so that's all i'm purchasing anymore...as well as only divers since that is my interest. but totally agree with you about preferring solar quartz.

  • @BoricuaTraveler
    @BoricuaTraveler 2 года назад +14

    Excellent comparison. I agree with your take on Seiko’s diminishing value proposition. Having the SNE at $500 is nuts, considering that its solar quartz movement puts it squarely on Citizen Eco Drive territory, and Citizen blows Seiko out of the water when it comes to QC, build quality and bracelets (though not in design).

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 года назад +2

      Thanks I'm glad you enjoy the video! Yeah its sad to see Seiko's core value slipping away bc i really do feel like I've been priced out of most of their watches now! if only the SNE was sold at the $350 price tag that i bought mine at bc that would be on the higher end but it would be the extra price to pay for seikos design. The SPB 143 would have been so great if it had a sticker price of less than 1k.

    Love the take on hollow end links! Wholeheartedly agree. Solid everything can lead to clunky and overbuilt bracelets that don't wear well. I still find that early 5 digit Rolex with the hollow center links, end links and thin stamped clasps are the best wearing sports watches. Also agree about the lighter feeling (despite solid components) aftermarket bracelets by Uncle Seiko or Forstner wake up many watches like the BB58, Seamster and various Seiko's. Seems to me that OEM manufacturers are in the region of diminishing returns when it comes to making "better built" or "more solid feeling" bracelets. This stuff was already tougher than my arm back in the 90s, it just didn't necessarily feel that way in-hand

    I'm wondering why you scored the SPB143 lower in the two categories of "Case and Bezel" & "Bracelet" for issues related to fit and feel, when there's a separate category for "On the Wrist Feel." Besides the fact that it's your channel and you can do whatever you want. LOL! :-D If you take feel out of the equation for the two former categories, can you objectively say the 569 ranks higher? Another great video btw! I genuinely look forward to new content from you and can't wait to see your SOTC.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 года назад +2

      You make a very very good point, I didn't think of it that way! I can totally see what you mean and it does make sense to keep those separate! But also at the same time the experience on wrist is so intrinsically connected to the case/bracelet that I guess it makes sense to include it in their own sections? But I do think that I need to reconsider how much weight I put into the wrist experience when I'm deciding on the point totals for the case and bracelet sections.
      As far as wrist experience goes as a separate section sometimes it ends up being more than just a sum of the watch parts. But I think a good way would be to weigh strap experiences in this section more heavily?
      Thanks and yeah not sure when I'll put out a updated SOTC but I'll be doing something similar to that near the end of the year tho!

    Both Uncle Seiko and Island Watch now offer oyster bracelets for the SNE solar divers, but both taper from 20mm to 16mm (I prefer the more subtle taper to 18mm, which is also more standard). 16mm is a little dainty, even for a 38.5mm watch head.

You’ve really got me thinking that I could save a fair bit of money and go with the seiko sne569! I know they’re not really in the same league but the seiko just looks like the perfect size and the thinness looks perfect. Also think it looks like great quality overall. Do you wear the seiko more than the bb58?

    I've had both and IMO they are not even close - spb143 has better case finishing, better dimensions for me, bracelet is by far better...however, for a daily beater, solar version is ok. My problem with it was that it just looked to small on my 7,5 inch wrist and under stronger light the colors on the dial and bezel were too much for me. But my wife loves it :)

    Wow I really like this watch, the SNE one, and every review that I watched basically trashed it because of the price. I love it for its size and lume, and here you really emphasized its versatility with the straps and Uncle Seiko option.
    I have 6.7 inch wrist and I tried the new Monster, Tuna and the dressKX and they are all way too heavy for me. I would just not wear them.
    Monster on their rubber just flaps around... you can feel the delay on your arm.

    I’m a Seikohaolic. I really thought the 143 was going to be my favorite but it was the most inaccurate watch I’ve ever owned. Very disappointing and I felt like I couldn’t even sell it. I gave it to my brother (who doesn’t mind being late-lol). The quality control is bad for a watch I payed $1200. Lots have mis-aligned chapter rings which are very unacceptable (I felt so fortunate not to have this issue/it looks awful).
    As for Seiko solars I have two (SNE 497 and SNE 499) that are my most accurate watches. Off only 1 sec a month- Amazing!

    I have both an SNE569 and SPB149. Paid $300 and $1100 for them, respectively.
    To me, it's no contest. The SPB149 is better in almost every way - fit & finishing, dial & bezel quality, and bracelet quality (absolutely horrible bracelet/clasp on that SNE569) ... of course it's 3x the price though. Ultimately I'm keeping both. The 569 being solar quartz means it has its own place and uses.

    The value of the SPB143 is 7 and SNE569 is 7.5.... OK... it is your video.

      having a bracelet with endlinks that dont fit is just a bit too much for me on a watch thats over 1k lol

      @@thewatchidiot Yes, I agreed the SPB143 is overpriced especially with that bracelet. But it is a good-looking watch. Then again, the 6R35 is not that great... may be you are right after all.

    So the SPB tied with the BB58, and the SNE beat the SPB. So the SNE beats the Tudor that costs 10x more. 🤑

    Ok, so worse watch won against objectively better one because of subjectivity. You could say at the very beginning that you like the SNE better than SPB and save us time. gg

      Objectively better in what ways?
      Not center of mass
      Comfort
      Strapmonsterbility
      Accuracy
      Practicality
      Bezzel grip
      Bracelet fitment
      Value proposition
      ...
      So what way?

    I like the SPB but the price is way too high for what it is in my opinion. In the UK they're £1100 ! Not sure how Seiko can justify that price for this watch.

      @@polygoncoco I have a gen 3 Sumo - retail £740 , cheaper with discounts. I can't see why the SPB costs so much more. I guess they're worth what people will pay, for you it's the right price, just not for me.

      Its an awesome watch for sure but I think you really ought to check it out in person if you havent already! its stunning but I do agree, the sticker price is on the high end of what I would want to pay for it. But by the looks of it there are options!

    Gray bezel? Looks like someone washed it with bleach and let it dry in the sun. Ugly as sin. Pressed clasp? Come on. Terrible. Hollow end links? At $500? Really? Three things going in that makes it look cheap. And that's before the misalignments and second hand not hitting the markers. (I hope yours didn't't have those issues).
