As for the woman staff member, who on earth does she think she is. Shop staff are on a very slippery slope doing this sort of thing unless they are 100% sure they cannot accost shoppers because of a mere suspicion even worse if they're unsure they cannot detain or search you because if they're wrong then they're committing the offence, as for lunging at the phone what a load of nonsense, I'd love to hear how this plays out!

@SISU889, you can’t record in a private business but because they own or lease the land they are allowed to record you, however it’s not a criminal offence just a civil one and the business can ask you to leave or remove you by reasonable force if you refuse to stop filming.
If you don’t leave or they can’t make you leave it’s then a breach of the peace which is then criminal so the police can then remove you or choose to arrest you.

The guy acting as the store detective also needs retraining - he handled all the lady's shopping without consideration for the items, dumping them on top of each other and moving them around. He should be worded: Theft can only be when the woman leaves the store. She still has the chance to go pay for items if she has missed any. The staff should wait until the store is vacated, which becomes theft. She could be apprehended, and the police should be called.

The customer was on her own with no witnesses, so it is justified for her to record the incident as she was ganged up on, still with no ID from store detective. For staff to take the situation of trying to take possession of her phone is not justified and at least the customer had it recorded that the staff was trying to steal it from her. Sadly, the issue of staff getting abused hasn't been dealt with, so some retail staff adopt a "zero tolerance policy" towards any customer who gets aggressive. Basically, you give them any bad attitude, you get targeted!! Harsh, but customers have only themselves to blame!

The woman at no point asked for I'D. And why should the guard be sacked if he had reasonable suspicion that an attempt was being made to take goods without paying for them. Agreed the actions of the female employee should be investigated.

My Son takes me shopping every 2weeks, I'm 73 and he's 54. Sainsbury's then M&S, we spend approx £200.00 between us. Been selected at least 3 times to have goods checked, by Sainsbury's assistant, after my Son has used his Smartphone and we've been honest and packed our own goods. They root through items, making you feel like a thief, then you have to repack them and pay, then leave feeling shamed. How dare they !

I tried those hand held scanners at Tesco twice, and both times I was 'selected for a random security check.' You get the scanner by scanning your clubcard, so they know how often they've 'randomly checked' a customer. I agreed both times, then went on my way.
*The third time* I waited for the assistants then handed them the scanner and trolley saying, 'after you've checked it, pop everything back on the shelves. I don't appreciate being accused of being a thief!'
Never given them my business since. 😠

Yes, but you can't just have the items back and walk off - unless you're happy to give them back after you've paid for them! I'm sure you would have had to take the items to the customer service desk and queue (probably slowly) for a refund. Is that what you did? I want the truth.

I’ve not been to Tesco since 2020 when I was barked at for letting an elderly man go in front of me as he only had a couple of items. Disgusting customer service, which I’ve never seen at anywhere else I shop. Good on you! 👍

During the pandemic I got told I couldn't buy 3 tins of beans here as it was only 2 per customer. My wife had bagged around £120 of groceries while I argued with the manager that there were 2 of us so i should be eligiblefor 4 tins. In the end I tipped 4 bags of shopping back on the conveyor belt and told them to put it all back. I use Asda now, much cheaper.
