I love the detail about Fern casting fast. Lügner wonders how Frieren trained Fern to cast that fast, but it's not because of Frieren. Fern was in such a rush to learn magic as quickly as possible that she learned to cast more quickly just so she could practice more in a limited time.
I remember seeing Japanese comments pointing out the same thing back when the series was ending and it really is one of my fav interpretations of Fern's casting speed. The clock was constantly ticking while she practiced to hit that rock on the hill.
Ferns speed and control were already insane when Frieren met her and now she's been training under Frieren to make them even better and raise her mana. Man Fern is one of the most exciting characters to me. She pulls of some crazy stuff in the manga too, maybe season 2 or 3 of the anime.
Yeah basically he feels like he is fighting his master whom he couldn't beat either. But he turned it around as soon as he realized he isn't fighting Eisen but a mere imitation with a fraction of Eisen's strength. If it was peak Eisen he was fighting to the death here those attacks would have probably been deadly for Stark
Stark's final move was bait for Linie to strike him in the side, leaving herself open for his finisher. He was prepared to be killed but he was able to tank it because in the end, Linie was weak. Aura's magic turns people into puppets "unitl their bodies turn to dust." Death does not release them, they just turn into undead. Their corpses are still inside the armor. And Fern... you'll learn more in the future.
I absolutely love how Stark realises he can just go all out because Linie's attacks are weak sauce. He's like "hey, I can TANK that!" And I wanna know what was going on in Linie's head at the end, because that face she made was priceless 😂
I wouldn't even say that he was able to tank it because Linie was weak, Stark is just INSANELY durable and strong. If he had a "normal" teacher he probably wouldn't be doubting himself that much, but because his teacher is literally a legendary hero his own perception of what strong means is probably super skewed lol.
I'm happy you zeroed in on the moment where Frieren and Aura were talking about why Frieren wasn't blasting away her puppets any more. It's a really clever storytelling device, because in the past, Himmel was upset at Frieren for not respecting the dead, and now Frieren in the present is mad at Aura for the same reason: because she disrespected the now-deceased Himmel. As for the question of whether their souls are trapped in those bodies, there's no way to know. As we found out in Episode 4, there's no known way to observe the souls of the dead, so it's impossible to say what happens to them (except by traveling to Aureole, if Flamme's notes are to be believed).
One thing to keep in mind for Starks fight, this was more of a mental battle for him. Remember he parted with Eisen in anger, and he doesn't believe he can win against his him, so when they revealed that Linie was copying Eisen, Starks mind immediately went into the negative saying "I can't win this fight", because in his mind it was his master he was fighting and he has never won. Then comes the realization that she is not actually Eisen and just immediately finishes the fight haha
Тhe fights in Frieren are not just fights but they are connected to the characteristics of the character. It always provide either backstory +world building, or developing of the character and show's themes. It is never fight just for the sake of it. For Example Stark's fight showed us how this class, fighters, thinks, while Fern's one is showing us how Frieren taught Fern to fight by mirroring her. Even the expressions are similar. I will say it again - Frieren is a masterclass of story telling and character development.
To add to the discussion on Stark: I mentioned this in another thread, but Stark actually has tactics on top of tactics. In the first half of his fight, Linie the Demon frequently switches weapons and techniques (Eisen's axe, followed by someone's sword, then someone's spear). After Stark gets back up, he taunts Linie about how she imitates Eisen poorly (13:30). From that point on, Linie sticks to Eisen's technique and brags about it, which is the one combat style Stark innately knows how to, and does, counter.
Only it's not a healing, it's something else. Eizen just doesn't take damage from falling from heights. And we've never seen his blood. Stark, on the other hand, is covered in blood, but he doesn't care. It's like he's got a monstrous amount of HP.
@@supos9131yeah it’s like Eisen is made of ya know… Iron? Eh? The translation of his name? :D Meanwhile Stark fights like he’s just unkillable, he reminds me of the warrior class from final fantasy, just made of HP. You’re gonna hit him, but he’s gonna shrug it off and hit you back harder
The animation of Stark putting on his jacket, and the incredible fight choreography, including Fern's steps while battling, and the way Fern's hair gets blown in different directions each time she uses magic...there is so much in this episode to appreciate upon re-watch. And that's just the mind-blowing animation the studio put into this one show. The pacing and great use of flashbacks, the majestic soundtrack (I feel like I could run a marathon to that great battle music), the important character moments (Stark overcoming his fears and symbolically surpassing his master, and Fern's display of intellect by reading the demon's true motivations for only wanting to injure her - his strong pride and ego), and more. This episode really delivered, and the most interesting thing is that the main fight we were expecting - Aura vs Frieren - only gets a short setup, because the focus is on Fern and Stark. Also, one thing this episode does _so_ well is to give the audience challenging and powerful antagonists for the heroes to fight. Linie especially is a very strong threat (and indeed some viewers have said they are a bit sad she couldn't stick around as a future opponent) because of her skillset and the awesome ways she is shown to use it. The movement when Linie throws the spear at Stark, and then uses it as a pole to spin around when landing, giving her momentum to change the weapon into a dagger that she hurls at Stark...that animation looked so great and felt so natural as something an agile warrior - who had copied the movements of so many other great fighters - would choose to do. Because Linie and Lugner are such significant threats, the victories of Stark and Fern give a strong feeling of resolution and satisfaction to the viewer.
Fern is exact copy of Frieren while fighting - cold, meticulous. Even her expression is the same. She also disrespects Luegner the same way her teacher disrespects demons - she fought him using only 1 hand.
Just a clarification on the music. The track playing while fern fights is not the zoltrak theme, its Fern's own theme called "Fern the apprentice". She has here own boss music 😂
80 years ago, Frieren was simply blowing the puppets up with powerful spells but got reprimanded by Himmel. Basically, Himmel just want Frieren to respect the bodies of the warriors because they were once humans. That's why in the current fight, she's simply dispelling Aura's spell despite her using a lot of mana because that is what Himmel would prefer, and to show respect to the warriors who fought Aura.
@@supos9131 It's not just about Himmel. It's about respecting those former warriors who were made into Aura's puppets. Frieren also spotted Graf's son as one of the puppet soldiers (revealed by the fact that the armor had a necklace with the Graf family crest). So though it was Himmel who influenced this chance in Frieren, it's not just about him alone.

This is such a great arc. I really like how the ruler isn't stupid or have some awful personality trait. He knows what happened and can adjust. Stark being stark but I hope you noticed the incredible animation for Stark putting on his jacket. It's so great that Stark is learning his job as a frontliner and what that entails. Excellent you guys picked up on the family crest necklace. Lots of reactors think that was how Aura was controlling the soldiers. Great reaction, you two. We get to see Fern and Stark take out the underlings and next up is the main course! Good pick up on the reason why Frieren is holding back because Himmel scolded her for harshly treating what are Aura's victims and are trapped souls. They don't say it outright but I'm sure that's what's implied. Lugner and Fern's fight was great. Fern pretty much just using basic spells to take out a powerful demon. So good! I don't mind your videos coming more often since you're binging it now.

I love little animation cues that often don't get brought up. Starks lighting stike doesn't have a smear frame, so the hit is so fast its over before it can been seen. Fern, after breaking her impalement, doesn't use her left arm for the entire fight, so it really adds to her posture as the super cold, hyper efficient fighter.
I gotta say one of the many many things this show does so so well is give you a moment of levity after a deep scene. But timing right that it doesn't detract from the seriousness of it.
Himmel scolded frieren before because the they are not just armors, their beheaded bodies are still there. Like graf granat said, aura dealt with those with stronger will the most logical way - beheading, thus the guillotine. Unlike before wen frieren blasts the soldiers, now she respects them that she chose to release them from aura's spell
Personal favorite episode. That POV shot of Fern getting attacked and then Fern being a baddie the rest of the episode and Stark with his Lightning strike. 🤌
In the past Aura used the knights as they were, just as she more and more often encountered Soldiers with a strong will, she started to take the heads of the soldiers of, because then there is no will anymore to fight her spell. Crazy good world building.
lovely point about himmel wanting to release the souls of the soldiers from the armour. but i think it's more for the families of the fallen soldiers. war is so cruel and even worse if you cant give proper burial to your loved ones who died in that war. though since it's himmel, he might've though of both... probably thought of both.
Frieren is very agnostic. Even doubts the existence of Aureole and the Goddess of Creation. So I'm positive she doesnt do it for their souls, but their families
The whole episode being one battle is wild, loved this show as a whole can't wait for S2. In my opinion, although some people may disagree, this show remains good from the first to last episode. I didn't even expect fighting much in this but damn, this show ends up having outstanding action scenes that aren't even just action scenes, they themselves show backstory in every movement.
The only episode were both "Zoltraak" and "Fear brought me this far" is played. It would be really cool when frieren can meet the souls at aureole, at least the son of count Granat. Fern just spamming the B button on a Xbox-controller xD. The Hair from Fern flies every time in a other direction when she spams :D
23:00 Fern didcated her whole childhood. As a % of life lived Fern is dedicated. She has genius too but genius is 99% persperation and 1% inspiration. Calling people geniuses and dismissing their achievements fails to see the hard work it takes to develop a skill even if you are talented. People just get jealous when they put in as much work but don't reach the same level and use it to deride the other like they didn't try as hard.
His move "Lightning Strike" is so fast, they skipped frames between it starting and it landing. That's why we just see the start and then we see Linnie's arm falling off; it's meant to describe just how ridiculously fast of a strike it is.
Linie had the technique, but not the raw strength and physicality. You can only get that through time and dedicated training, which she does not do believing her magical skill to be enough
My fan notion is that a big part of that calm collected aspect of both Frieren and Fern's fighting style are mind magics that cater to analysis such as thinking at a rate far faster than real time. The lack of expressed emotion, perfect coordination, absolute attention to detail regarding threats alongside the awareness of mana happening at great distances all point to a magically enhanced way of analytically seeing the world. So I imagine Frieren and Fern deep in mental command bunkers running parallel analysis and planning as they fight. The Resulting majestic indifference to pain and supreme elegance of movement hinting at that inner mind space. I expect such mind magics are known to mages, but not at this genius/prodigy level.
Stark wasn't exactly overcoming his fear when he was talking about killing each other. It was him saying that he was ready to use that move to kill each other but he realises he didn't need to worry about it as Linnie's attacks are light compared to heavy blows by Eisen. He was mocking her.
So I've heard that when Stark uses his Lightning Strike, to simulate how fast it is the artists did not put in a frame between when the axe is held at it's highest and when the axe is down with the flash of light. Can anyone confirm?
Hi! I don't think that the souls are trapped in the armor. They are completely empty. HImmel was angry at Frieren because she did not show respect to the bodies/remains of the dead soldiers.
I love the detail about Fern casting fast. Lügner wonders how Frieren trained Fern to cast that fast, but it's not because of Frieren. Fern was in such a rush to learn magic as quickly as possible that she learned to cast more quickly just so she could practice more in a limited time.
I love this take on her speed and it makes perfect sense. Thanks man
agreed. remember, the demon questioned how Fern was trained to become a monster, not how much more innate skill/power she has

Unlike before wen frieren blasts the soldiers, now she respects them that she chose to release them from aura's spell
Personal favorite episode. That POV shot of Fern getting attacked and then Fern being a baddie the rest of the episode and Stark with his Lightning strike. 🤌
Linie was actually one if my favorite demons to see fight, seeing her change between fighting styles and weapons was spectacular
The dubs for this series is actually crazy good. It's like the only anime I ever watched where I preferred the dubs. I love the reactions!
LoL 16:56 - about the symbol of the 🌕 🤔
It is a reflective body - so in this specific context, Fern is a vast reflection of her Teacher- A Genius 😊 👍
can't wait for 10/10 😁
Fern be using all her buffs and build to increase casting speed, and then casting Glintstone Pebble 40x a second 😂
she's gonna lose her marbles in the next one 😂😂
"Ms. Frieren knows better than everyone"
In the past Aura used the knights as they were, just as she more and more often encountered Soldiers with a strong will, she started to take the heads of the soldiers of, because then there is no will anymore to fight her spell. Crazy good world building.
Stark: I didn’t hear no bell!
lovely point about himmel wanting to release the souls of the soldiers from the armour. but i think it's more for the families of the fallen soldiers. war is so cruel and even worse if you cant give proper burial to your loved ones who died in that war. though since it's himmel, he might've though of both... probably thought of both.

The Hair from Fern flies every time in a other direction when she spams :D
oh. i love Kim's earring so much, want them too T_T
Fern 🔥 Stark 🔥
23:00 Fern didcated her whole childhood. As a % of life lived Fern is dedicated. She has genius too but genius is 99% persperation and 1% inspiration. Calling people geniuses and dismissing their achievements fails to see the hard work it takes to develop a skill even if you are talented. People just get jealous when they put in as much work but don't reach the same level and use it to deride the other like they didn't try as hard.
These people are going to go crazy with the end of the next episode. 🤣
You have no idea what kind of beating Stark can tank...lol
Thank you for sharing 😊
You really have a point here, also concerning several other parts of the manga that eventually will end in season 2 and 3
Stark wasn't exactly overcoming his fear when he was talking about killing each other.
Cool earrings. I just noticed
LET'S GOOOOOOO
Hi! I don't think that the souls are trapped in the armor. They are completely empty. HImmel was angry at Frieren because she did not show respect to the bodies/remains of the dead soldiers.
This arc is so hype. Do you have a Patreon? I’d love to watch uncut reactions
Episode 10 is even better :D
She's gone to Tengoku in 14:51 ^_^
This episode is when Fern the brat turns into Fern the Queen.
do you guys plan on setting up a patreon at some point?
