That's why you see everyone racing to the station in their private cars and not yet in uniforms in the beginning. They were called away from their office or factory jobs, from home or from school.
exactly. sometimes they come from neighboring villages and towns, too. then have to change (usually literally hopping into a prepared uniform with whatever they wear at the moment) and then enter the vehicle or like in my village frequently the first few guys head of with the fire truck and the others arrive in personal cars

@@BuyOneGetOneFree it's called the "Kids fire fighters" or similar and is practically just for fun but to get the Kids to learn about the stuff so they just grow into it. kinda like the kid of a worker helping out and hence growing into the same Job, ish
The fire departments even have youth divisions ("Jugendfeuerwehr").
But for active service, you need to be at least 16, 17 or 18, depending on the state.
Considering that some states have 13 years of schooling, you can easily be in high school until you are 19 or 20. (I was on active service in the volunteer fire department while in the last two years of high school. It's fun when the pager goes off, you drop everything and run from the classroom.)

I think they had to censor what the leader was saying. Privacy is a huge thing in Germany, so you aren't allowed to talk about any details.
I think this is the reason for it, because the "leader" gave further information about the crash to the crew.

10 year volunteer firefighter from the U.S. Mad respect to my German brothers. You guys were on the ball. Also, I have to shout out to your people on the highway. That shit does NOT happen over here. We have to ride the airhorn just to get people to move.
@Null Pointer That's really awesome. It's been a couple of decades since I went through driver's ed and I'm sure something is in the book about getting over, but not like people follow the rules. Most of the time it's a free-for-all. Probably location dependent. I'm in a city and our drivers aren't playing with a full deck.

@Null Pointer Wow, yeah. Never heard of any of this before, but it speaks volumes to how well German drivers seem to react to changing situations.
Here in the states, driver's education is offered through public high school, but also from private institutions. We can get a learners permit through the school, study for the license, and then take the test through the DMV. The booklet is maybe 100 pages; can't quite remember. It might have changed since my time.
You're correct, though. It is exceedingly easy to get a license over here. I used to work as a 911 dispatcher (112 I believe for you). I had security clearance to our federal criminal database and you wouldn't believe how many people in the states have had their licenses suspended or revoked and they're _still_ driving around. Madness.
It is actually illegal to not make an emergency lane. You can get a fine that is pretty high (not sure about the exact amount)
and thats why a drivers licence is so ungodly expensive over here, the "basics" and all of our road way laws are far FAR better, just better, though Germany is the only place where people part the sea of cars like its moses walking trough, that doenst really happen else where like that tho even in the NL people get out of the way rather well.
IMO every aspect of the western EU (the OG benelux country's so BE DE NL LU FR) have the best road laws on the globe, the NL is the best of the best in terms of traffic lights, road markings, and (imo) speed laws. severe accidents are rare here (unless you count one person driving fast as a severe accident) but multi car collisions are exceptionally rare. one of the main reasons i would never consider moving to the US is the road system, coming from NL that would be nigh impossible as my expectations of what people do would have to be completely ruined. i cant fathom such big open roads as in the US, our biggest highway is one 5 lane highway, all others pretty much are 2 or 3 lanes per side, it works well as people drive well but the US system is in an exponential pile of shit, there is no way to fix it without rebuilding pretty much every town, i also just cant fathom why anybody would want to live in a wooden house but thats might just be me, though IMO the old EU stone buildings add a lot to the why vibe of life here.
@@MuchKoku and yet some drivers still manage to do the dumbest shit and endanger themselves and others. a few weeks ago I had one almost drive into my tractor because he was going 60 70 km/h in the middle of the street doing something with the window in the roof of his car.
I am German. The rule for emergency corridor access in Germany is so simple. But some drivers still don't understand it.:)

Some is better than all. in the uk we move to the side if we see flashing lights. from this video, everyone was moved over before the engine even got within view!
God, there was already an open path through the road before they even got there, Germans are intelligent.
It is against the law to not make that path in Germany. Also when the traffic is stopping or very slow you have to drive very far left or right (depending on which lane you are driving) assuming an accident could happen every time.

I've never seen traffic parted like the red seas BEFORE emergency workers arrived before. These people knew EXACTLY what needed to be done. Here in America people move whenever they feel like it or not move at all and it's really sad. These folks understand that they want people to move when they're in need, so they move knowing it's the right thing to do.
In germany you get heavy penalties for not making the "rescue alley". Even when there are traffic jams on the highway people form the rescue alley just in case any accident happens. Often in highway accidents seconds can decide between life and death.
Emergency workers were there, there was already an police officer at the fire who almost certainly cleared the path. And I have never not seen people pull aside for emergency vehicles, which must amount to a few hundred opportunities for someone to mess that up in my view by now.
@@westrim I’ve seen it here in Australia, someone refusing and/or failing to get out of the way of an Ambo. Scumbag through and through, if you cannot or will not move for emergency services you should never be on the roads.

As an American I am completely embarrassed buy our citizens. Never seen any motorists here so well organized in making way for ems personnel to get through.
there was a huge campaign about it in the papers and over television. basically everyone KNOWS it. then of course comes the assholes, who don't do it anyways. for them its about 300,- fine (yes, it should be more), but definitely 2 points in the register which means at the very least: 1 month of losing your permission to drive.
the system works pretty well, but still at every traffic jam there is like one or two people that don't get it.
Fun part is: they will just wreck your car if you are in the way... and its your own fault. no insurance will pay ;)

You know what's amazing? Thats the rule even if there is no accident. If the traffic slows down to halt on the autobahn it is always assumed that there's an accident and left most lane cars stay of extreme left and middle lane stay on the right. It's fascinating to watch how organized Germans are.

no-one will end up in jail for not moving out of the way and blocking the emergency corridor. Although the fine was raised by a multiple some years ago it's still ridiculously low.
The emergency corridor has to be created in traffic jams not only on the highway but also on any other multi-lane road (multiple lanes going in the same direction) outside the city limits. It's NOT because one would assume an accident ahead. The traffic jam could be caused by e.g. construction zones, broken down vehicles or rush hour as well, but one has to keep in mind that emergency vehicles still might have to get through, responding to other calls or transporting a patient
As an american trucker, I wanted to cry just seeing so many motorists actually being well mannered.

In our country we only have etticute, which many ignore.
I use a radio to communicate the traffic or weather as to HOPEFULLY reduce delay from people cutting-in 10 inches from me and lane closures, which is always delaying everyone.
Here, our emergency responders use the shoulder to slip past everyone regardless of our position.
At the end of the day, we sometimes get creative and sit in the soon-blocked lane to divert people early.
Well. Getting a driving license here isnt quite easy, its expensive as heck aswell. Right now im even doing my driving license.
In Germany it's against the law to stop in the middle of the motorway, you have to leave a lane for emergency services

@@TurboBMRProjectLove If it’s very bad, you see the same thing. People on the left lane drive as far to the left as they can, the cars to their right go as far right as feasible. If it’s very clearly just traffic and not a full blockage, it’s not quite as pronounced, but you can get a hefty fine or lose your license if you’re blocking emergency vehicles because you didn’t create a “rescue lane”, so most drivers do it properly.
Can we please appreciate how well the driver was handling that huge fire truck and he even turned the siren off in the village sometimes to not annoy the citiziens where it was not necessary :D
That's standard practice in Germany. You usually only turn it on when you approach busy intersections or problematic road sections.

Great driving, but in this area the law is that emergency vehicles must have siren on if the flashing lights are on. From personal experience (seeing a police cruiser fly over a blind crest siren-off and hit a bicyclist, plus nearly get hit myself by a fire truck running siren-off), I prefer lights+siren. One is alerted that emergency vehicles are on the move nearby even if they aren't visible yet, and to get out of their way. Also lights-only is confusing (is it really an emergency or just a rush?) and the emergency vehicle driver assumes that others will see them and give way.
If you want to do things usually not allowed by the traffic laws you need to have lights and siren, but when you only drive a bit over the speed limit or something like that you can turn the siren off
@@jan-lukas Like many cyclists, I use a tail radar unit on my bicycle that displays and records a series of speed readings as a vehicle approaches me from the rear. Last Friday a state trooper came up behind me at 57mph in a 35mph zone, slowed as he neared me due to oncoming traffic. Flashing lights but no siren. Had no idea it was a cop until he accelerated past in the oncoming lane when the traffic cleared. Didn't see his flashing lights as he approached: on a bicycle you can't be looking backwards constantly (you need to balance on 2 wheels!!) and at 17mph vs 57mph there is very little time. The speed limit is 35mph because that road has both blind crests and blind turns, plus houses where people may be pulling out of their driveway.. Troopers may have superhuman driving skills but they can't see through earth. Got the lame excuse that the trooper "may" have been running siren-off to avoid alerting a suspect as they approached.

In Australia we are also volunteers and attend vehicle accidents just like this. I recognise the crew cars arriving and everyone trying to get their PPE on in the truck and the crew briefing en route (even without translation). This crew did a great job and I just love that the traffic on the motorway leave a centre lane for emergency vehicles - absolutely brilliant performance!

leaving space for such an emergency lane is actually part of the german traffic regulations and there are quite fines in failing to do so (or worse: trying to use that lane to overtake, effectively blocking ambulances or fire trucks). it is even regulated between which lanes it has to be lol
This video reminds me of my trip to Munich last week: An accident on the A96 motorway, involving four cars during the morning rush hour. Voluntary fire brigades from the surrounding villages were very quickly at the site of the accident, drivers stayed disciplined in the rescue lane, so that no time was lost for the fire fighters and ambulances to get there.

We have these part time or "retained" firemen in Ireland too outside the cities. Fantastic guys, a friend of mine had a fire in his farm buildings a few years ago & still talks about their bravery trying to save his machines despite the hazards. Brave men. Max respect.
We have them in Poland too, even teenagers can become volunteers. Many of my classmates from school were firefighters, so they had to skip few lessons and days to save people's life.
The driver and his front seat crew manager roughly translated into English were saying "Fucking typical T-BONE STEAK and all the trimmings for our evening meal and we get a shout!!!!
This is a volunteer fire department located in the village of Stammham, north of Ingolstadt in Bavaria. The village is very close to the motorway (Autobahn) A9 between Munich and Berlin in Germany. This is a quite good example when motorists leave a passage for emergency vehicles (Rettungsgasse) on the Autobahn. Drivers are required to do so by law and the passage should be formed already when the traffic is jamming up. Unforntunately this does not always work this well. Fines for for not forming this Rettungssse have been raised and the police has put focus on the issue the last couple of years. Please note the moment when the fire truck is entering the Autobahn (from minute 3). The road they use is closed tho other traffic but a number of drivers use it to leave the Autobahn to avoid the traffic jam.

@@chiefjames9749 Etwas ähnliches gibt's auch für Autobahnraststätten. Diese Zufahrtswege dürfen nur Mitarbeiter und Rettungsdienste/ Polizei / Feuerwehr nutzen. Manchmal ist da sogar eine Schranke für die man einen Transponder benötigt.
Genau, das ist eine so genannte Behelfsausfahrt, die eben nur zu diesen speziellen Zwecken genutzt werden darf.

While moving, or on roads without wide hard shoulders, however, the rules are the same here as in Germany; Pull over to the side, and leave the center of the road open
Always amazed how fast these reactions can be. As a German I remember how impressed I was when I was in a traffic jam, on the way to an airport, Firefighters speeded by, directly followed by police and a tow truck and not even 15 minutes later the traffic was gone, I passed the place where the accident had been and while one could still see on the ground where the fire had been, everything was already cleaned up with firetrucks, tow truck and everyone gone, just a lonely police car parked on the side probably still filling out some paperwork :D
In the UK I experienced the highway being closed (because of a road accident investigation) for 24 hours, that was south of London where M23 and M25 were crossing. I remember I went from Gatwick airport to London and was in a traffic jam for 2-3 hours (afternoon to evening time). Then I checked the next morning and it was still closed, they opened it 24 hours later after the accident. In the UK they have time for everything 😀
@@gpsoftsk1 This can happen in germay as well. Sometime the accidents are just so horrific that it takes time to get all out safe and sound. I remember that in the news were an accident with 10 to 20 vehicals and the road was closed for 48h or so and even after the close there were just on lane out of 3 or 4 open. And if I recall it corretly there was just one dead driver, the drunken guy who was responsible for the accident.
@@Bl4nkTr3x With so many cars, yeah I can imagine that it takes time. Same goes when infrastructure is severely damaged like if a bridge is really damaged. Normally those can sustain quite a beating and not care too much but...
My personal experience is though, that it usually is quite fast.
@@martinschlegel1823 The main thing that keeps a road closed is when a fatality occurs. Because in this case you need to wait for a state attorney and police investigation.
We had a car crash into a semi head-on at 1.30am (not on the highway). The car driver probably fell asleep at the wheel and the semi had no chance to avoid the crash, the force of the impact even bumped him into the crash barrier, leaving a significant dent behind (yet he stayed on the road).
The road was closed until 8am. I was present until 5am and enjoyed a day of homeoffice after just 4 hours of sleep afterwards.
When its not fatal, we can usually re-open one lane after 15-30 minutes (depending how bad debris/fluids were spread).
My mom grew up in California and told me how accidents there are often made worse by rubber neckers.
In my state, folks tend to be pretty good at yielding to emergency vehicles, howver were a state with counties bigger than some states...shoot, this state is bigger than some countries!
Not only that, it's quite rural and response time hampered simply by distance often.
Often times, lawmen are the first officials on scene even if it's something outside of what the do.
As a firefighter in Canada for 30 years ( much of it on Rescue one) I am amazed by the drivers. Here in Canada no one knows or cares what they are supposed to be doing

Having lived in Germany for 4 years, I was amazed that drivers education doesn't stop after getting your license. I loved watching the PSA's on television showing obvious things like creating a lane for emergency vehicles. I have always thought that German drivers are the best (with occasional failures).

This just appeared on my RUclips recommended to watch list. As an Australian volunteer firefigther, I am in awe at the amazing consideration of other road users in making a very clear path for emergency services - if only we could receive half the amount of courtesy and consideration, our job would be so much easier. Well done to the firefighters on a quick extinguish.
It's required by law to form a corridor for emergency vehicle access. Sadly there's still a lot of people who don't get it and fail to do so. Some drivers even use it themselves, sometimes even in the wrong direction, so they can escape the jam. If you fail to form the corridor or you are blocking/using it, you'll get hit with a hefty fine.
It is an obligation. Taught during driving lessons. The requirements for a driving license in Germany are very high, unlike the US and some other countries. And it shows! Much less accidents, and much better behavior.
(Though there are a few jerks everywhere.)

This has its flaws, but also advantages like shown in the video.
So do not be surprised when in Germany your neighbor tells you, you cannot mow your grass on a sunday. And the entire village will show you they agree with your neighbor for at least a week.

in my experience German drivers are extremily considerate when it comes to emergency services. they dont freak out and do unpredictable stuff, they just move over a bit and keep driving

While I personally try to understand what makes people stop/slow down for seeing or even filming human misery, I deeply despise people who give in to that urge.

You can get some heavy fines if you slow down next to a traffic accient to watch it.
Not heavy enought in my opinion though.
Since a couple of years, there´s a fine for slowing down to watch what happened, since it used to happen sometimes. Since the fine was introduced, none bothers the firefighters/ambulances anymore.
The only thing preventing other people in the opposite lane from slowing down is the danger of someone following you at 250 km/h. Given the chance, those people would stop and take photos or videos of the accident, even in Germany. That's why we introduced new laws against those (as we call them) "Gaffer" ("gazers"). Just the act of stopping or slowing down to watch an accident is punishable by 20 to 1000€. Photographing a helpless person is considered an act of neglected support and is punishable by up to 2 years of prison. There have been many problems with those kind of people in the past and I'm very glad it has somewhat changed over the last years.

16thChemical yes they are volunteer Firefighters. They get alarmed by a pager and drive then on the fastest way to the department. After that the volunteers change their clothes and drive with the fire truck to the accident

You are required to live nearby the station if you want to join as a volunteer. Over 90% percent of the German fire brigade are volunteers.

If this scenario was in Texas, say on I-35 anywhere from Laredo to Oklahoma, not only would traffic block the fire truck, cars would continue to flow around the burning car on either side and on the shoulder. I was stationed in Germany for three years in the 1960s, and I would have stayed there if I had known what a shithole the U.S. was going to become.

"Hilfsfrist" is such a great concept. I remember very well when I was the first car behind an accident. I called 112 (german/european 911) and went to help the people involved. it felt like I just had time to ask their name before the first firefighters arrived. That was the moment I decided, I was going to join the volunteer fire department in my town. Being able to help people in need in just a matter of minutes still amazes me to this day. But considering how fast fires can escalate this is actually really important.
Funnily 112 is much more common around the world than 911...
I love how the traffic had already moved out the way to allow emergency vehicles thru and the traffic on the other side keeps on moving like nothing happening! If that was in the UK thier would be traffic jams on both sides!

@@Belta420 i live in germany and it is fixed by law that right at the point when traffic is starting, the cara have to move to tge right side if there are 2 lanes or free the middle lane when its 3 lanes even if they dont hear any sirenes yet. If they dont do it, their platenumbers are registered by the next firetruck, ambulance or police car that tryes to pass through and the owner of the car will have to pay a big fee for not making space

Lived in Germany for 3 or so years now, and still love the autobahn and how everyone moves and makes the lane, even if just a little congested. The gap is always there. Its actually a rule to do that and leave that gap in stationery of very slow traffic, in case of emergency vehicles coming, often or not they do not but its still nice the gap/lane for them is there if they do

I am amazed they had a near perfect emergency corridor. i ofen hear from family members that are volunteer and professional firefighters complaining about it that i came to believe they are rather rare to be that clean.
I spent 6 years in Germany Courtesy of the US Army ( i was a Blackhawk Pilot. 1969 to Dec 1971 i was a Sheridan Tanker in Budingen, NE of Frankfort then from 1986 thru 1989 I was a Senior Warrant Officer / Blackhawk Piot ( DUSTOFF) in Southern Bavaria in Augsburg. Those two rotations were awesome Germany was amazing the food was Fantastic I had a great time with my wife on the second trip cleanest countries I’ve ever been in my entire life

Hell of a ride by the driver!
Great job! Here in the UK we also make way for the fire engine, ambulance etc.. However, there would also be a mile queue of cars on the opposite side of the motorway due to rubberneckers ,slowing right down to have a look at the emergency. Most of them with their mobile phones out. So, inevitably, there are rear ending accidents on that side which then brings both sides of the motorway to a standstill. I'm more impressed that the German motorists just carry on with their lives and drive past without slowing down.

As a fire fighter from South Africa I am amazed at the co-operation of the public to make way for the first responders here its a struggle everyday

As an American i was confused when they cut across traffic instead of just driving down the shoulder, and surprised at the fact traffic actually moved
the hard shoulder is a breakdown lane, not meant to be used by emergency vehicles responding to a call as it's just not suitable for that for various reasons
Outstanding job Freiwillige Feuerwehr Stammham! I counted six guys in that MAN pumper and kudos to the German drivers on the autobahn for creating a pathway for the first responders without having to be directed to do so!. Having been a cop for 30 years in Los Angeles, the motorists down here can learn a huge lesson from the Germans as to how to properly respond to code 3 traffic!

As for the emergency corridor: traffic laws require motorists to create and keep that corridor before being able to see or hear an approaching emergency vehicle

The most amazing part of this is the fact that there are no giant SUVs and they all move out of the way of emergency vehicles. Coming from an American this is impressive.
In 2019 SUV sales in Germany skyrocketed and became the most popular type of vehicle sold. It would be a different video today.

Creating a rescue lane in slow traffic is an obligation in Germany. And to get a driving license you have to get driving lessons and a lot of knowledge. And it shows on the road, much less accidents and much better behavior.

That's just a question of legislature. They would need to make it mandatory and threaten a fine when being found not forming the rescue lane. About 10 years ago, it was also already mandatory, but many people didn't remember it when they came into a traffic jam, and the fine was just 20€. It usually didn't really work. At the same time, in Austria the fine was already 2000€ ... unsurprisingly, the drivers in Austrian took it much more serious.
In recent years, there were some PR campaigns for more awareness for the rescue lane, and the fine is much higher now (compared to the previous 20€)... Now it often (like in this video) works much better than a few years ago ... but there are also still many cases where it doesn't work well.
You don't know what you're talking about! It's the law to move over and stop when emergency vehicles are approaching from either direction. Unless it's a high-speed chase and some people might realize a little too late, people respect this law pretty much everywhere in the US. Watch any video of emergency vehicles in traffic in the US and you'll see. You live in Mexico and you talk about the US? How are the drivers behaving in Mexico huh? Wanna talk about that?

That's a reasonable siren. I love how in America, our fire engines are literally equipped with full sized, mechanical tornado sirens and ship horns haha!
Did you know, that the sirens from german trucks are that way, because the tones are unpleasant so easier to hear and you can hear if the truck is coming towards you or away from you because of the Doppler effect? The American sirens are too pleasant and and you can’t make out the tonal change because it’s not just two tones

3:11 Those cars are illegally using the emergency road access to the autobahn. It's clearly signed both way no vehicles except authorized vehicles.
When I saw a case like this irl (also German Autobahn) there were cars also leaving through that access. It was that bad, that the moment the crew of the ambulance opened the gate, they rushed out blocking the waiting ambulance. It had to close the access gate and wait for the police to fend the motorists off. It was a shitshow, complete with civilian Trucks trying to use the emergency opening (Rettungsgasse) on the Autobahn for themselves, blocking the emergency services even more.

Seattle area firefighters would be astounded that German drivers on the highway know how to get out of the way! They actually created a lane for the responders.

I'm from Seattle and people are pretty good about getting out of the way for emergency vehicles. But the rule is that all cars move to the right and make a clear path on the left, not in the middle. Still the most impressive thing about this video is that the opposite direction traffic is not slowing down one bit to gawk. That could easily happen in Seattle.

One of them forgot half his gear, so the truck boss had to hold the hose for a moment and he didn't adjust the profile of the hose and many other tiny things, but it works, because they are so fast and have such a short distance.

One of the better examples of how it's supposed to be done (by law). Stil not ideal. Lots off idlers half in the rescue lane and all those cars coming off the highway as the fire truck goes on, are NOT supposed to be there. That was an emergency exit/entry point, not to be used by regular cars unless instructed to, by emergency crews.
@Pixel I‘m German and had no idea that this was an emergency entry point. I think the fire trucks should all have a dashcam and record the plates of the people so the ones in their way will get in trouble

Better: you don't see any rescue cars at the accident, so it was the first emergency car in the jam.
Simple reason, you are forced to keep the emergency lane free, even the traffic is just stuck.
This is teached us with a 200€ penalty.

This is why I loved my time in Germany when serving in BAOR. Autobahn drivers already make way for the emergency services to come through. Can you see the selfish foukers doing that in the UK. Also I notice that the other lane, no fouking rubber necking, moving along at normal speed. How it should be.

Well, they are forced to do so. There are very high fines for obstructing emergency vehicles (you might even get charged for negligent manslaughter if it can be proven that someone died because you didn't move out of the way). You can also get fined for rubbernecking (stopping and staring from the opposite lane).
