Can you imagine how great this girl felt when she realized how much personnel and resources just for her, along with her family and community! I don't see her leaving Alska anytime soon! I am a former Fire Chief and Paramedic and have worked along side USCG, SAR, US and Alska wildlife officials teams and the National Park Service! Sadly 2 of the searches did not end well like a small plane crash and someone who fell into a rapid waterfalls in the middle of the park. The plane crash incident had resources cost between all agencies was around 2 Million before we found the deceased and the crashedvaircraftit and with over 300 personnel over the time once notified and 5.4 Million with over 500 personnel to search for the foreign citizen visiting the Alska wilderness! It was so very sad to tell the family we couldn't find the individual alive and well with all victims! When we did have a good rescue it was most rewarding feeling! Even just one life is priceless!

We cheated in the winter and took snowshoes, sleeping bags and prepared food. In the summer months though we relied on fish we could catch. Well, that and chips and Pepsi! LOL
We wanted to prove to our Dads that we were just as able in the bush as the boys were so they'd take us on their fly-out fishing weekends sometimes.
I do know what it takes to live in the wilderness for a few days. Kidlet was not so outdoorsy but I made her and her Brownie troop learn the basics. Some of the Moms were concerned that Kidlet reported one Monday that her Mom let her play with matches. That was so she could learn how to build a fire LOL

As someone with epilepsy, it is scary hearing about someone having the first seizure in their lifetime. Being an adult when happens makes it unlikely it’s epilepsy. With that being the case and him just having one after another it’s worrying. It could be a head injury, some kind illness or tumor, maybe he does have epilepsy and this was just a first grandmahl and he unknowingly has been having absent seizures, no outcome is good.

Mykala did you really eat a spider? You are one brave girl! It must have been a big one to make it worth eating and I know that I would probably starve before I ate a spider because I am TERRIFIED of spiders lol

The other branches are not rescue trained in this way. this branch is wonderful, love the Coast Guard. You should see the training they have to undergo for ocean rescue.

There should be a cheap material that is sold so people can take it out when hiking to use as markers of the way you took. It should also have benefits to nature if you’re not able to collect it all on your way back. Like a bright colored fluff that birds could use to build a nest or it’s biodegradable after a week to a month if left in the elements. As long as it’s dry it won’t break down or something.

I was taught to stack rocks, bend shrubbery, or make direction markers with sticks, pinecones, etc.

Peg yet that doesn’t stand out unless you place them where you don’t normally see them. Like a stick arrow on top of a rock. Stacked rocks do stand out more so I can see that. Added into the fact animals could accidentally mess up your marker.

With phones today we all should take pictures of people going on hikes to if to much time passes you can show first responders what the person or people look like. Always wear something that is brightly-colored
