- Coast Guard Alaska follows the men and women of the US Coast Guard stationed in Alaska. Watch as they risk life and limb to save lives in America's deadliest waters!
Season 1 - Episode 6:
In this episode the team deploys a cutter out into the icy Bering sea to try to save some fisherman that are lost. On Raspberry Island two hunters are stranded in the freezing Alaskan night and must be rescued before hypothermia sets in! And in Sitka the crew must rush to save a hunter who has been shot in the back, can they get there soon enough to save him?!

Ok, so this guy got shot with a 30-06 that damaged his kidney, lungs and broke 4 ribs and he was standing up and walking after waiting how long? Wow, they sure raise them tough in Alaska!
He was in shock and frozen half way.....
Well, it was only a flesh wound.

@@AdrianaBarron1 I'd still guess that's the source even if paraphrased ,and admit to using it to medics following a down to the bone accident , in that case the elder of the two explained it to the younger, hence I thought it may be outdated or have passed unnoticed(I am now of middle age sad to say) .
From experience it's amazing the damage you can do and still function ,but hats off to the guy a 30-06 is a burly round and at 50 yds would normally come out the other side and leave a huge hole. he is very lucky with the outcome.

I retired from offshore job and these guys will forever have my respect and prayers. I witnessed many times these guys saving lives in extreme severe conditions. These guys are true hero’s

Much respect for the Coast guard. In 2002 I was on a crab ship in the Bering sea anchored of at St.Paul island. We were boarded and checked for safety, fishing license, ships logs. They were very professional didn't take long and left me with a great appreciation. Knowing that in an emergency they were there. As well as having the helicopter fly over.
I cannot imagine doing that work and being out on the Bering Sea! That had to be kind of scary and exciting at the same time. I can only imagine the comfort the Coast Guard must bring to you and your crew mates, as well as your loved ones back home.

I lived and fished in Alaska for 12 years.
It's kind of a survival of the fittest scenario, about half the time. When you go out in the wilderness, you need to be prepared for anything but, this guy was extremely fortunate that the Coast Guard was able to get to him, or he'd have been dead before he ever got help.
The US Coast Guard is full of heroes.
I live in Washington State and we got a lot of respect for the Coasties out here. Those dudes go out in weather that'd make Santa Claus stay home.

But seriously, liver and kidney damage, broke ribs, etc... and walked himself to the helo? The man's a legend !
I was stabbed in the live through the lung and in the face with a broken orbital bone and fractured ribs and had to walk 2 blocks to the hospital when your not ready to die your just not ready lol damn I was pissing shitting and throwing up blood as well for a month it really sucked

In '76 I became a US sailor because of sheer ignorance of the Coast Guard. I still came out way ahead anyway, but I think being a Coastie would've suited me more. Respect to these folks. Godspeed !

Coasties are only branch actually working for a living every day. They are ALWAYS deployed. Hopefully they start to get the props they deserve as a result of this series.
We're south of Sitka on Prince of Wales Island (the huge one). Before we got our airport, these Coasties were our "everything"! Almost ANY land or sea critical emergency was handled by them. Here in Craig, that orange helo coming overhead got the fear up and talk flying- "Who is it? It must be bad.". I have a handful of acquaintances who wouldn't be here today had they not been. We now have better on-island response, but on the water all around us we still depend on them. And they ALWAYS deliver! Salute!
If you look at the ballistics of a .30-06 you'll realize exactly how lucky this guy is. .30-06 is a large, heavy bullet that starts around 2,500 ft/s and has plenty of velocity and mass to make its way through the human body. Even if it went through a few tree limbs and his backpack before it hit him, it's still incredible it didn't do more damage.
Im not a hunter, so does any one know if the man was probably shot by another hunter? Concidering he wasnt wearing any orange an accident would have been more likely right? Im just a bit confused as to how a man got shot and if it was preventable!
@@dansrod5952 He was most likely shot by his partner since it's pretty difficult to shoot yourself with a rifle that size. Plus the Alaskan wilderness being as remote as it is makes it very unlikely you'd run across someone else in the same area. I suppose it's possible another hunter hit him, but he'd most likely be there waiting for the Coasties with him.
What most likely happened is an accidental shooting due to user error. It could have been failure to make the weapon safe, poor trigger discipline, or incredibly poor judgement. In any case, as with the vast majority of shooting accidents, it was most likely preventable. My best guess is these men had been around guns all their lives (being in Alaska goes far in supporting that theory) and had become complacent with their weapons, as sometimes happens, causing a momentary lapse of judgement resulting in the man being shot.
if a 30-06 will blow through deer they’ll blow through a human too
@@dansrod5952 Just like car and aircraft accidents mishaps with firearms can have dire consequences and are usually the result of a honest mistake, negligence ,carelessness fatigue ,inexperience pick your poison. Have you ever had a accident ? Like most people if we are honest with ourselves and assess the cause of a accident we have been involved with there is usually more than one factor that has led to the accident and they are all to often preventable.
When you are hunting you are supposed to follow all firearms safety protocols and clearly identify your target and know your backstop . You are responsible for every round you send down range.Obviously one or more aspects of these rules was not followed leading to a unfortunate outcome but a very lucky ending.

I appreciate, in these Coast Guard rescue videos, that the outcome of the medical issues is revealed and the rescued people are interviewed, thus the viewer is not left wondering what happened. Thanks 👍

That's a solid captain. Saying he's proud of his crew for doing a good job goes a long way for moral.
I just got my rotor craft certification and I cannot imagine having to put a bird down on a sliver of land like they just did! These pilots are top notch. The Coast Guard knows how to train em for sure.

Coast guards in Alaska especially few days or something man it's a pleasure to watch you work it's an honor you guys put your life before anybody else's and you got to be rewarded for that and you will be. You're so awesome a lot of people would be in dire straits without you and I'm in Missouri

Loved seeing the home life of these pilots. Such great beautiful families who give support these guys so well.

After watching so many episodes in this series, I’ve realized my dream job is an AH-60 pilot. I’ve always wanted to fly for the military but I couldn’t decide between branches or aircraft. But these AH-60 pilots are constantly getting seat time unlike other branches, plus it’s fucking badass. I’m probably gonna have a talk with my nearest recruiter soon.
Actually the A designation is reserved for Attack helicopters like the AH-64 Apache and AH-1 Cobra gunships. The Coast Guard flies HH-60J Jayhawk helicopters. In this case, the first H is a designation for Search and Rescue.

@@chad8251 absolutely not. My grades are horrible. I’ve changed plans and now I’m aiming to fly for air National guard as I’ve heard the pilot selection process is much more relaxed, plus I’ll just be a weekend warrior. I’m starting training for my PPL-H soon so no matter what, I want to fly for a career. Worst case I’ll just fly commercial civilian ops

That must be such an awesome feeling to not only save people and contribute to society, but to be a hero in your kids eyes are all priceless. I have actually pulled a person from a burning car wreck and given cpr 3 times. To do that everyday as a job, must not be a like a job at all.

The Captain of the cutter in this episode is a great officer IMO. Exactly the kind of officer I'd like to work for, and learn from. I've seen many that just aren't the right type, but this Captain is great.
Credit the captain Sam vessel for saving your lives, and the coast guard for actually picking you up and doing the rest, but that boat The Captain Sam for half of the rescue. The captain at that helm played a huge part in saving your life. ... ... and also... ... MERIKA!!!

Doing this stuff must be one of the most satisfying jobs anybody could possibly do. They are total legends, every one of them.
I used to work with a guy who was a contractor and used to be in the Coast Guard. He was a swimmer at that time, before I knew him. That is very, very impressive.

Generally on station Coast Guard command is lax, I mean there are the ones that you don't talk about but generally it's relaxed
IIRC, Coast Guard has a much different culture. Like, in the Marines, they'll deny your leave and force you to miss Christmas because your pain warms first sergeant's heart. Coast Guard is more inclined to treat people like people rather than animals.

How cool would it be if Deadliest Catch was filming during a Coast Guard call. I’ve seen them in an episode, guess they weren’t filming at the time.
I am surprised on that 76yr old w/ difficulty breathing with the deputy knowing such extensive medical knowledge and responsibility he took care of during ambulance transport
I’m glad they show the fishing boat being in good standing on their safety equipment ( nice change of pace to have a program not trolling for ratings by showing nothing but bad things) also liked seeing Coast Gard captain complementing his men for a job well done, you can see the Passion for his job. Eventually I’ll make it to the big water and be damn happy to know the Men and women of Our United States Coast Gard are

I enjoy dry cold, I enjoy boats, I really love being on the water. But I absolutely positively detest the experience of being in cold water, and I swim like a stone. I am grateful to and will cooperate fully with and assist these guys in any way I can. Sometimes I screw up. Sometimes things break, mountains move or the winds change. Statistically, "accidents" happen to you and me. I'm glad these guys are "there."
Good stuff! Those men and women sacrifice a lot and are dedicated as they put their lives and livelihood on the line.
My stepson was a marine biologist assigned to go on various fishing boat trips to monitor regulation compliance... developed an upper respiratory infection that converted into an MRSA infection. Unfortunately, the authorities were not called until he was unconscious for almost a week. He was airlifted to a New Orleans hospital ... he was then considered in critical condition and had he survived, the drs said they would have to amputate his legs and hands. He was taken off life support and didn't make it. It was to be his last time out to sea as he was offered an administrative position in Miami. You guys are angels and I so commend your perseverance in handling extreme rescues.

My dad worked on Sikorsky’s H60. He was its Program Manager from the 1960’s until 1985. I love watching this stuff. Also because I’ve done Wilderness Med & was an EMT. Nice job! To all of you!!!!

@@foreversunrise8749 haha I doubt that’s what it is for. They probably use the pool on the weekends and such as a community pool for the families or something, and they have the slide for the kids for fun. Idk though, I’m just guessing.
many comments about how the man with gunshot would was not severely injured and such but, I am wondering how he got shot in the back. Any ideas other than hunting partner shot him? I mean did he mistake him for an animal or just shoot into the brush or what?

I'm originally from a land locked province with very little need for the coast guard. But now that I've moved to an island on the ocean I've taken a great interest in SAR teams.
My youngest son is in the Coast Guard boot camp. Hopefully he gets out of his third quarantine in time to get back in company before January as they're not taking anymore companies until February. He's been in boot camp since August.

Man just casually ate a round of .30-06.
I would be wIlling to bet that was a ricochet or the bullet went through a tree prior to hitting him. A 30-06 round fired clean is going through and through a human easily.

That first one wow he was taking that pain like a champ kidney and liver damage and a hole to them and 4 broken ribs insane that man was still walking 30-06 is a fast round and like they said it packs a punch! He is one tuff guy!
i've watch a bunch of these now and these guys are just in professional mode 24/7. Takes a certain type of person to work SAR.

Man losing my opportunity to go into the U.S.C.G. is the biggest regret of my life. I thought I was sharp as $#¡+ & knew everything after high school & didn't study like I should of so I ended up fudging the asvab the 1st time I took it. Soon after that I kept on hanging out with the wrong people & b4 I knew it I was *at the wrong place & at the wrong time* 1 night & good ol karma finally paid me a visit. Ended up taking the wrap for a couple people who I genuinely thought were my "friends." Ya I learned a real hard lesson that you should never fully trust people outside of your family😒

A non-rebreather is not positive pressure, no matter what your flow rate is. It is not designed for that. Cpap is positive pressure

I too was thinking that also the patient urinating blood have been a tell tale sign that the bullet most likely hit the kidneys or liver and not the lungs so much.
That guy must be a grizzly in a man suit, shot in the back with a 30-06 and walking.
Having been to Alaska 4 times, I'm convinced that the 4 most important words are "U.S. Coast Guard".

I can not believe that kid was still walking after being shot with such a powerful gun I'm glad he was ok besides what did happen and I hope he healed well.. And the 2 men stranded the 1 man taking all his medicine and stuff and then being ready for something like that was awesome smart men . But USCG you are just flat out awesome and amazing straight up heros... My prayers and love are with you all .

FYI. The rescue "with the rank of (E4)" swimmer who will put his life in danger for any reason, leap from a Helicopter in 20 foot seas, is only getting 17.68 an hour.. THANK GOD FOR THE Coast Guard.
I was in AK and took a job from cl building a resort in remote country..the guy who hired me ended up being a nut locked me in a shipping container..well..after trying to shoot me..the state troopers,and coast guard flew out in a black hawk.saved me..I can not say enuf good thing about these brave men and women...

Lots of speculation in these comments about the gun shot, so figure I'd put in my 2 cents. I've been shooting 30-06 my whole life and I'm here to tell you that that bullet was nearly stopped before hitting him if it only got a couple of inches in, lodging in his back. Speculation: partner probably took a shot at something and the bullet skipped off of a rock, tree, or the ground losing most of its energy before hitting the victim who obviously was down range at just the right angle to catch the deflected bullet. There is not a chance in hell that a clear shot from a 30-06 at 50 yards can be stopped by a human body his size. Most likely a freak accident with just the right glancing shot. Dumb shot to take when your friend is down range.
