It's a game you play and it's only temporary. Once you graduate and get to your first station you make good, life-long friends (which are actually hard to come by).
When I got off the bus for Air Force basic training there were a few females crying because they were being yelled at and that was in the 80's when there were no snowflakes.

Well you're taught to use your command voice which basically means replace your throat with your diaphragm when speaking so you don't destroy your voice as fast
Well, first, they are called company commanders, not drill sergeant. And second, they have a max amount of time they can do it, that's why they time it, not cuz they want to, they have to.
@@viviangonzalez1398 Hello, True. Coast Guard recruits address all Coasties, even CCS, as "sir" or "ma'am;" yet, after the first two weeks, CG recruits address all NCOs by rank and surname, but continue to address all CG officers as "sir" or "ma'am."

Having spent time teaching sailing in New London and having the opportunity to talk to many of these fine men and women, I definitely got an education on the coast guard as admittedly I didn’t know a ton about it but having now gotten to meet and hear the stories of those serving, I’m beyond impressed by the quality, professionalism, and dedication to learning that these men and women possess. Proud to say I've passed this! It hurts, and the canteens aren't even the worst thing that they can do to you. Loved it there, though. The CC's are all great people.
@@Ferreira0504 there's a lot. Did you know that holding a matress over your head isn't just optional there, but mandatory? I do! You can also discover how much you hate "linehandling", or ways to ruin lunch (as they showed in here). They'll also introduce you to SNIPER POSITION, in which short range is NOT your friend. There's a lot they can do. It's not all mental, a lot is psychological.
I've heard from people in the army that the coast guard actually sees the most combat as they have to deal with pirates and smugglers constantly. I didn't know that and was shocked to hear it.
Yes because the Coast Guard was going to let a camera crew come in and make their training look easy.... lol no. TRADOC across the board is similar it really depends on the leadership and the instructors over you.
That Petty Offficer Gunn is a tough lady. I believe those drill instructors get a real joy having that much power. I served in the Marine Corps and the Navy. I remember getting chewed out by drill instructors a lot while in the Marine Corps. The Navy was a little easier than the Marine Corps. I served at Paris Island South Carolina for the USMC and I served at Great Lakes Recruit station in North Chicago.
Well no, for the entire time you were enrolled, you were told what to do, where to go, when to go there and were controlled like children with extremely strict parents, so when you did something "bad" you got punished. You had no control over your life and you didn't need to practice self-control or self-discipline or anything, they took care of that for you, but then when you come home.......no one's there to discipline you and you no longer have the self-discipline you once had, you're like those children with extremely strict parents I mentioned earlier, running around, finally free!......and a mess And *none* of it is your fault, the system only cares to prepare you for whatever you're going to be facing during service, not to prepare you for what you're going to be facing once you go home, after you have served....after they broke you down..........
5Flux Believe it or not that would be a good thing as it pertains to this situation. My parents loved each other until the day of my fathers death... but there were some squirrelly times between the two of them. My parents were very vocal no BS people who were not afraid to get in your face and kick your ass if you deserved it. I also competed in sports throughout high school with wrestling being my favorite, well being the heavyweight meant that on a few occasions the team victory came down to my winning or losing and on some occasions I would have to win with a pin or I wouldn’t have enough team points for the overall victory. Those two factors along with decent preparation before basic training gave me the edge to graduate on time with my forming company November-157. When you have been in enough high stress situations you are able to focus through all the CC screaming and yelling and process what is going on and how to properly respond. I wasn’t perfect in boot camp, but I did better than a fair amount of my shipmates.
A perfect scenario of "Well my daddy". So your parents went through basic training for 18 years? That's pretty hardcore. They went through basic and then it gets easier and easier the longer you stay in.
I went thru in 1988, during the winter. I was lucky that it was snowing so we didn't have to do the obstacle course. Anyone considering USCG, make sure you cam swim or learn to swim prior to going in. This will relieve a ton of unnecessary stress. Also, get in shape (push ups, sit ups, run 2 miles frequently).
@@Syncopated_ no it’s to understand that the people that are yelling at them are above the recruits and are in charge of the recruits and that the recruits should follow every order that they are given without hesitation. And it’s also as the comment suggest so they can work efficiently under stress.
@@yeetfeet1878 Yeah but that is bullshit. If you need to yell to make someone understand they need to listen you're an extremely crappy leader and shouldn't be in that position. You can also learn how to perform under pressure without being screamed at. That Petty Offficer Gunn is a tough lady. I believe those drill instructors get a real joy having that much power. I served in the Marine Corps and the Navy. WalkinOSF Yep!
Well no, for the entire time you were enrolled, you were told what to do, where to go, when to go there and were controlled like children with extremely strict parents, so when you did something "bad" you got punished. You had no control over your life and you didn't need to practice self-control or self-discipline or anything, they took care of that for you, but then when you come home.......no one's there to discipline you and you no longer have the self-discipline you once had, you're like those children with extremely strict parents I mentioned earlier, running around, finally free!......and a mess
And *none* of it is your fault, the system only cares to prepare you for whatever you're going to be facing during service, not to prepare you for what you're going to be facing once you go home, after you have served....after they broke you down..........

8 weeks? my parents did this for 18 years
JESU can't relate
5Flux
Believe it or not that would be a good thing as it pertains to this situation.
They went through basic and then it gets easier and easier the longer you stay in.
n n n n no 8 weeks is the training period your parents worked in the coast guard for 18 years
5Flux dad did it for 29
I went thru in 1988, during the winter.
If they’d scream at me like that I’d probably cry

Pretty sure it's to put fear into the recruits.
@@Syncopated_ no it’s to understand that the people that are yelling at them are above the recruits and are in charge of the recruits and that the recruits should follow every order that they are given without hesitation. @@yeetfeet1878 Well we're all right here I guess. But it's mostly about authority and fear, like I said.
@@yeetfeet1878 Yeah but that is bullshit. If you need to yell to make someone understand they need to listen you're an extremely crappy leader and shouldn't be in that position. You can also learn how to perform under pressure without being screamed at.
