I happen to agree with you that the city's atmosphere has dramatically changed for the worse. But where we differ is regarding the point from WHEN it changed for the worse, and to what DEGREE.
There is little doubt that things are MUCH worse now than they were 2 to 3 years ago. There is less order throughout the Boroughs. But to say that things are worse today than they were back in 1990 is just not supported by the data.
I too was taken into Manhattan as a kid for Christmas, and we took the subway over the Manhattan bridge. Of course that was in the late 1950s to the1960s. And it was glaringly obvious how far the city had gone down the tubes by 1975 when the city flirted with bankruptcy and laid off city workers including cops & firefighters.
In 1976 the Fire Department responded to the most structural fires ever in it's entire history...a record that stands to this day. There were parts of the Bronx and Brooklyn that looked like bombed out Berlin at the close of WWII. In 1977 we had the blackout and there was widespread looting and the stores were torched afterwards.
And, as I had previously mentioned, NYC reached a record 2,262 murders in 1990. Remember when you couldn't even see out of the subway cars windows because of the graffiti?
Look, I'm worried about the city. The city faces a host of problems and I wish I had more faith in the people in charge. The City Council and politicians such as the Comptroller seem to me to be ideologues that are out of touch with reality. It's as if we learned nothing and have forgotten what we learned from 1994 to 2019.
