    About The Route and Film:
This 871-mile route will take riders to iconic places like Valley of the Gods, Moab, the Abajo and La Sal mountains, Onion Creek, 9 Mile Canyon and the Wasatch Mountains. Utah is unpredictable with mud that is impassable when wet. Deep sand also challenges riders in places, and a few expert-only options provide excitement for those who seek adrenaline.
    About Backcountry Discovery Routes:
Backcountry Discovery Routes® (BDR®) is a non-profit organization that creates off-highway routes for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. We have introduced a new route with free GPS tracks for the community every year since 2010.
Routes can be downloaded from our website at www.ridebdr.com
Our work includes rider education, safety campaigns and promoting responsible travel for motorcyclists traveling in the backcountry.
Our volunteer-powered organization works with agencies and land managers to keep trails and remote roads open for motorcycling.
Each route generates new tourism that delivers sustainable economic relief to less-advantaged rural communities. This creates local stakeholders who will help fight to keep access for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles in these incredible backcountry areas.

Great video, Utah is a beautiful and diverse state for sure. At around 50 minutes on the cold morning , I thought I heard the guy say he heard the fire still crackling and burning from the night before. With all the wildfires we have had in the West please use prudence and extinguish fires when turning in for the night. Prevention and setting a good example is paramount. Best!

FWIW I did the UTBDR border to border in 3 days 9 hours 21 min with my dad. We were both on 690s and camped each night. We intentionally went fast but not totally crazy. We were setting up camp in sunlight still. But on 690s we were much faster than these guys. I also think they bring way too much stuff. But whatever, all I’m trying to say is that you don’t need 10 days if you don’t have that much PTO saved up.

Off road means the path does not use the word road in it's name or description. 2 track ATV trail is off road. Single track is off road. Jeep trails are trails. Gravel roads, sandy roads, Jeep roads, roads maintains by heavy equipment (scrapers, bulldozers, graders, etc) are ALL roads.

Keep in mind the xxBDR videos are primary sales videos; selling bigger bikes. Selling the sizzle of ridding heavy street bikes on dirt forest service roads maintained for fire trucks and calling the bikes "adventure bikes." I have never seen anyone win an enduro race with the street tires in this video. I wont even use those slick street tires for off roading. It is best to have full on knobby in the soft sand else you are wiping out all the time. However soft sand is a lot better to fall in than hard packed rocks. I have never seen any of these bikes ridding around on the sand dunes near Yuma, never! So, but, yes they do go down the road better than the smaller bikes. One bike will not do it all. I like to trailer my off road bikes to the location and do out and back day trips. The 237 to 300 pound bikes are so much funner on the trail.
Itchy Boots makes great motorcycle travel video. Check her out. She gets over 200,000 views in the first day of releasing her videos.

Keep in mind this was filmed in 2011. I also have a KTM 350 plated dirt bike that I ride very steep technical single track.
That being said, I just ordered a KTM 890 adventure that I’m almost positive I can ride in Yuma.
I still plan on doing single track but less severe. These guys are all using big boxy luggage as well. Mosko reckless 80 revolver luggage allows for much less weight and bulkiness.
Why the 890?? My 350 sucks at freeways. being limited to trailering also has its limitations and your right. No one bike does it all but the new ones come much much closer.
In the end. It ain’t the bike. It’s the rider. I’m not Chris Burch but I’ve paid my dues and can easily hold my own on a 450 lb bike with WP suspension and brembo brakes

The KLR actually does better on these types of excursions than do the big BMW bikes. The KLR is lighter and more nimble. The KLR has more than enough power. The KLR with the big tank can go twice as far as these BMWs can go between fill-ups. There is a good reason the KLR is unchanged for over 30 years; it just works. If it didn't, why would people still be buying them?

Can anyone explain why anyone would try to ride 500-600lb adventure bikes off road like that? It is painful to watch their struggles and falls and see some unnecessarily get injured. They rarely even have the correct tires and it is sad to see them have to dig out the mud lodged between the fender and tire. It makes no sense to me and I am curious as to why. A dual sport is the best choice. I have a 300cc dual sport and I could literally run circles around them on these western routes. I can also do highway speeds of 85 mph with no vibration. Who needs to go faster than that when exploring? I can also carry as much luggage as I have seen them carry with the 1200cc they often use. Right now the only explanation I can come up with is ego, the biggest bike means you have the biggest dick.
