I once heard a recommendation to play this after the original Half Life, but before opposing force. I did it, and it makes blue shift seem like a nice little add-on.
I always thought that Blue Shift was underrated. Sure, it didn't bring anything new to the table but for me it was the textbook definition of "short but sweet". There seemed to be a bit more focus on the story itself as it introduced recurring characters like Rosenberg, it had the best Xen levels of the bunch, and the levels in general had the best atmosphere out of all HL1 games in my opinion. Glad to see it get some love all these years later
Blue Shift is the only official Half Life game where you as the protagonist understandably want to escape an alien infested research facility instead of looking for the one that's causing these shenanigans
@@itdobelikedattho8112 1. A playful or mischievous act; a prank. 2. An underhanded act or deceitful remark. 3. Nonsense; humbug; deceit: as, now, no shenanigan about this.
It's interesting how Gearbox's expansions (including Decay) are the only Half-Life games where protagonists are explicitly shown to be able to talk, only without player hearing them. Adrian is able to use radios to contact other squads, Barney is asking various scientists if they're Dr. Rosenberg, and Gina and Colette are asking the lone surviving guard in the dormitories if he has the all-clear codes for the rocket. Of course there are also voice lines for Gina and Colette when they're controlled by AI, but that doesn't count because they aren't playable characters when they're using them.
Whilst some of the puzzles were confusing.. blue shift filled in the gaps of the story nicely.. and gave us a bit more of the universe of half life, even tho it was short.. it was sweet and fun
Fun fact: Blue Shift was supposed to use the vanilla Half-Life soundtrack, but it was switched to Opposing Force's after the Dreamcast port was cancelled and Blue Shift was moved to its PC retail release. Then _that_ was broken on the Steam version using the vanilla soundtrack again (though I think with the wrong track order so still not correct), and later updated _back_ to using the Opposing Force soundtrack.
Blue Shift was never bad, it was supposed to be a map pack for the dreamcast version of half life but rather then just put freeman they went an extra step and made it into it's own thing. I got Blue Shift in a bundle alongside opposing force that included the hd models for the WON version of half life so for me it was a more then a welcoming extra campaign to go through.
This was always my fav HL1 expansion, It feels unique and It does a good use of the Half-Life's storytelling been connected to HL1, Decay and HL2, It really fits very well at the Half-Life saga. PD: how your HL2/BM looks so good and clean? those textures of the Combine screen looks amazing.
Within the context of this being a Dreamcast exclusive add on Blue Shift is incredible, Having it appear on PC instead of having it lost to history is a blessing.
TBH, I've never understood the hate for the HD pack, and I never minded it and don't think it's bad. In fact, I kinda like it more than the original. Will some of you tie me up and burn me like a witch? Possibly. Is this the hill, I'm willing to die on? Yes, Absolutely.
@3:49 after playing BS i realized that was the real Barney not the one u meet when ur tram stops and open the door, coz its the very 1st scene in HL BS...
The magic of Blue Shift is basically enjoying the environmental details as well as understanding certain aspects and extra details of Black Mesa we were not aware of or simply Valve could not put at the time. It was basically a short but pretty sweet snack that at first you may not really want it but once you try it out you want to finish it.
I always liked Blue-Shift. More of Half-Life is always great to have, and, as video says, the levels can get very lovely there. I also particularly enjoy the finale. Teleporting scientists one by one and then escaping on your own feels intense, but it's still ripe with that "unnoticable" feeling. Few guys disappeared, mostly discreetly, nothing else to see here. Finally I think Blue-Shift tried to play on what I bet many players tried to do, that is, saving scientists and barneys. Besides few places where they open doors for you, game is unconcerned with what happens to them, but it still feels nice to lead them to some place that just might be safe enough for the time being. And Blue-Shift basically builds a campaign out of that idea. Although, of course, not without a bit of "I refuse to take another step!"
But, that’s not bad for this Expansion pack! Even Both Expansion Packs really deserves a cult following and even the HD Pack was not bad either. I’ll approve it ESCalation.
The worst thing about moving BS on Steam is the fact that NPCs on moving platforms are broken. They jump up and down when the platform moves. So I recommend WON-version of BS.
•Blue Shift is the least promising title within half life franchise because as we community already played dozens of mods which brought more content and joy than blue shift did to half life franchise. •I think of the same for Opposing Force as well but people always unsee it because of the content and new arsenal in the game. Also playing as HECU is cool ngl 😁 Not to forget that race X still remains his mystery in the half life universe. •Both are average imo but they would be better if their stories connected at some point as how both did with half life 1. Like Barney sees gordon being held to crusher and Adrian tries to catch Gordon after he jumped to XEN. •What about Barney and Adrian meet in a single mission just sees eachother between the barrier of unbreakable/bulletproof window then other one leaves the room after you leave as what side you play at the moment. Some may say "hey there is time gap between the two, its impossible they meet since Opposing Force takes in time period where Barney already left and Black mesa is about to get nuke." Well could be some changes in the plot 🙂 I give [■■■□□] 3/5 points to Blue Shift just to sake for the love I have for the Half life.
Another thing in defense of Blue Shift is that it was intended to be a Dreamcast exclusive similar to Decay but since the DC port was cancelled Gearbox shipped it on PC so it's just not all lost. I really like Blue Shift it definitely has its own atmosphere and German Peter's video about it sums it up perfectly
Blue Shift is decent, I think really the only issue is that it apparently sold at the same price as Opposing Force at launch. It's a nice little expansion, especially considering how cheap it is on Steam. (And while it not using any OF content sucks, ti makes sense in the context of originally being a dreamcast expansion.) Honestly I feel some janky/shorter games that got digital re-releases (Similar to Blue Shift) that are pretty cheap actually make them more worth it to me, I've enjoyed some short low-budget stuff on GOG/Steam because digitial distribution ment it got a smaller price tag. (Such as some short 2-3 hour games.)
We nearly didn't get blue shift at all with the cancelation of the dream cast, it was a last ditch effort to switch it to PC, which could also be the reason it was so short and didn't have a lot of new content
I never felt like Blueshift was a bad game. I always felt like it was the weaker of the 2 PC expansions. I had fun with Blueshift and it's levels, but OP4 gave us new enemies, allies, and weapons to play with. In contrast Blueshift felt more like a level pack. A really good level pack mind you. But I felt like it was a step backwards. Though I also understand that Blueshift was supposed to be a mini-campaign to be added with the Dreamcast version and all of that and I understand they didn't want to reinvent the wheel for that.
Huh I never realized Blue Shift had actual characters, somehow you made it feel way more unique than I thought it was... Imo Blue Shift was never bad, just a tad underwhelming when compared to OpFor but that's not really fair
I've still no idea why people dislike blue shift. Personally in terms of official half life games I always found ep 1 to be the weakest. Not bad per say just not as good as the rest in terms of gameplay even if it set up the much better ep 2 very well in the story department.

Didn't Gordon Freeman want to escape the facility? And I'm pretty sure Adrian Shephard wanted to leave to. "We are pulling out"?
I am sooooo tired of people using an argument "you play as an everyday man that just wants to survive"
yeah but the gman did his thing and made them go into the void@@CinemaRescored

You could argue that Gordon talks when he orders NPCs around.

I think if Blue Shift had come out before Opposing Force, it would have been better received. OP just spoiled us with all the new content.
Half-Life is the main course, Opposing Force is side dish.
meanwhile Blue Shift is the fixings, most people left it out, some savor it.
Another similar analogy I've heard to describe them is that Half Life is the burger, OP4 is the fries, and Blue Shift is the drink.
Yep, this is my favorite expansion pack. Barney is my favorite character too. Just a good man.
3:55 The delivery of that plus your accent was fucking perfect!

Every half life game must have a sad cliffhanger ending and blue shift has a good ending and that makes it objectively worst
Lmao

I actually loved Blue Shift and can't wait to see the Blue Shift done for Black Mesa. I found it fulfilling and a closed story.
I don't trust anyone that says any of the Half-Life games are bad.

I loved blueshift and only found out it wasn’t very well liked years after playing it.
It felt very unique all around
1:45 lets be honest, he made his choice before all the alien nonsense anyway

All I know is the Blue Shift Dreamcast HD Pack made me long for the Playstation 2 HD Pack.
If you didn't played Half-Life: Blue Shift yet, because it is old, then play Black Mesa: Blue Shift right now. It is supreme remake.
I love blue shift loads I have no idea why someone would not
I always liked the hd pack weapon models but the player models while higher poly just look so bad artistically it turns me off ever using it.
never compare opposing force with Hl1 as a German it Shivers me Icecold the back down hearing that!
I was just happy to play more Half-Life and I'm still happy to play more Half-Life.

Just listen to half life rap battles and you will appreciate Blue Shift even more
Let's not forget this game was made for the dreamcast which explains alot why there isn't much in blue shift
I like it more than Opposing Force
Who the hell thinks Blue Shift is bad? It's action-packed, fun, and features that good good lore and new characters. Barney is a god damned hero.
Yeah idk why people wouldnt like blue shift.

It's a good game, even though short it is still better than 90% of today's games. I love the trilogy HL; Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

this is cool but where is the cs2 cut content ?
