It doesn't get a lot of love in the Half-Life community, and while I vastly prefer OP4 to this, I can still see elements where BS shines. Because in Blue Shift Barney escapes with Bennett and Simmons in that SUV and Barney may picked up a crowbar, but it definitely wasn't one Gordon "lost" (ignoring the fact that G-Man took all of Gordon's weapons anyway). Either way Barney says in Half Life 2 that Gordon dropped the Crowbar back in Black Mesa.
I always thought Blue Shift was a good half-life experience even if it didn't really add much or improve the formula with anything interesting and not having the best puzzles. I do however feel that its story was a bit more consice and clear cut than OP4 because of characters like Rosenberg and the obvious goals of escaping black mesa that's communicated early on. Rosenberg was the first named scientist we saw aswell and probably half-lifes first real character that wasn't a player avatar so there's that. OP4 added alot of stuff that was never iterated upon even if it was cool, like seeing the X-world aliens fighting Xen ones would have been cool but instead they just replaced them for the majority of the game. Even if it gave us a ton of cool new weapons and stuff OP4 story especially was all over the place after you get left behind. There's no real sense of direction like with Blue Shift or Half Life, even if the latter changes it's storygoals as you progress.
I really like the way Marc Laidlaw treats canon. It’s something that each fan can come up with a satisfying conclusion on and Laidlaw just wants to write a cool contained story that may or may not have anything to do with other parts of the universe. That’s up to us and I like that.
I think it fits the timeline that blue shift is smaller and less unique than the other games. After all, Barney pretty much leaves the facility at a time where Gordon is just at the half way point. The military is just arriving and the Aliens havn't yet sent their big guns in either. Meanwhile Gordon leaves for Xen, before the "thid wave" of Aliens pops up, leaving only Shephard to deal with them.
HLA references Blue Shift, so since Laidlaw retired, The Expansions are more so cannon now and there is a theory Colette may have appeared in HLA via a character we only briefly see and hear.

I figure that the new teleporter is bigger because of all the instruments used to stabilize the portal for longer, and to create less wear and tear on the device. The old one was set up in a little lab space area, the new one was in a specially designed chamber.

fun fact: the falling guard with the two zombies had his arms dislocated so that's why he was groaning in pain i have no earthly idea why the hell he fell though
Right there with you on the hi-def pack graphical changes. First time I played this it was just like Half-Life but a patch/update later and honestly, I could never go back to the game afterwards.
1:05 outside of blue shift being made for the dreamcast so on so fourth it also makes sense lore-wise as barney escaped before gordon goes to xen and race-X only comes in AFTER gordon has left to xen so barney couldn't see race-X because by the time they where here barney had made his escape
15:42 I am very confused, that sounds like a nostalgic “oooh” but I’m fairly certain that this is the first time we enter the first Black Mesa unless you’re talking about it being a prototype version of the room where Gordon enters Xen in
11:23 There is a way to turn off the steam pipes that lead to the control room, the valve you were turning in the video actually shut off a different set of pipes on a lower walkway in the same room that lead to an area with some ammo and I believe a weapon. On that lower walkway would be another valve on I believe a red pipe, if you turn that valve the steam pipes heading to the control room would shut off, meaning that you could get to the control room without needing to take damage.
Even though 1 week can be concidered a lot of time for a lot of channels for a review channel it’s very short in my opinion plus these are amazing reviews that go in a lot of detail i love this channel a lot and it’s very entertaining great job.
It's so lovely to see Blue Shift get some love sometime, I prefer Blue Shift over OP4, I really like the story telling of BS, that follows a group of scientist, trying to work a teleporter out so they can have a chznce to leave. I especially like Xen here. OP4 story telling goes all over the place unlike Half Life 1 that had some moment where you'd get some exposition on what is going on, OP4 just leads you to places without a real goal. OP4 did had some nice exploration level, even if they felt so out of place to have a level where you didn't have to shoot anything, it was a nice twist.
In order to turn off the steam in the canals, you have to climb down another ladder to a lower catwalk and turn the valve there. The valve on the higher catwalk is to turn off steam in a tunnel connected to the lower catwalk, where you find a dead scientist and can get the shotgun early.
the funny thing about stealing all the ammo at the start is that if you use all of it to shoot the box in your locker, it reveals a chumtoad, which is a cut xen npc theres also one in opposing force if you shoot about 2-3 smg clips into the vent cover opposite and above the entrance to the lambda core teleportation room just before you see gordon make his jump to xen
11:23 I have played Blue Shift multiple times and have always been able to turn the pipes off. Either your game is gltiching, or you aren't completing the puzzle properly. I know that there is a second pipe and a second valve nearby.
Decided to rewatch this video, and I wanted to say something other than my previous, admittedly, rude comment. I'm actually slowly making my own HL video, and also making small discoveries while doing that. So, to answer you question at 9:38, Barney was knocked out until somewhere around the end of "We've Got Hostiles" chapter of the original.
For the pipe with hot steam: If you go down the ladder right in front of the steam, you will find another valve **cue Hazardous Materials** that will turn of the steam above. The first valve **cue Hazardous Materials again** you see turns off the steam below, which leads to a shotgun.
Still can't believe that the dreamcast port was fully finished and never released. Managed to get a reprint fake copy off etsy (Yes I could burn it myself but it's a high quality print) and it's perfectly playable, it takes a long time to get used to the controls but when you get used to them playing a fully fledged FPS designed for more advanced hardware is quite the amazing experience
Not going to lie, Blue Shift was my favorite section during Half-Life as a kid. I guess the reason why I liked it more was because I was able to be the security guy and view things differently. Barney wasn't meant to be heroic or even brave during the job until the aliens came.
Honestly I think the bigger louder weapons, even though there's plenty problems with the models, makes his predicament look worse because he has these big powerful sounding weapons into the enemies for the most part are taking them it really elevates the level of the threat where they can take on these powerful feeling weapons and still keep on trucking.

fun fact: the falling guard with the two zombies had his arms dislocated so that's why he was groaning in pain
i have no earthly idea why the hell he fell though
6:43 Gordon: “SUCKERRRR!”
Man RUclips has been giving me small channels that I genuinely enjoy! Your videos so good!
Right there with you on the hi-def pack graphical changes. First time I played this it was just like Half-Life but a patch/update later and honestly, I could never go back to the game afterwards.
Awesome job. I'm looking forward to more videos.
1:05 outside of blue shift being made for the dreamcast so on so fourth it also makes sense lore-wise as barney escaped before gordon goes to xen and race-X only comes in AFTER gordon has left to xen so barney couldn't see race-X because by the time they where here barney had made his escape
15:42 I am very confused, that sounds like a nostalgic “oooh” but I’m fairly certain that this is the first time we enter the first Black Mesa unless you’re talking about it being a prototype version of the room where Gordon enters Xen in
Or actually... maybe Duke 3D next? I would LOVE to see it!
Considering how I and a lot of other people play the main game, I wouldn't be surprised if this Barney _was_ the last one.
I know BS doesn't do anything terribly new or exciting, but I like that it's just a nice condensed Half Life experience.
I have a feeling that I'm gonna get some angry comments on my Opposing Force review, once I get to it.
I tried to blow up the gas canisters at 23:45 with a satchel charge too, which didn't work. Oddly enough, I was able to blow them up with a grenade.
But you have to agree, the HD crowbar looks better than the og.
In order to turn off the steam in the canals, you have to climb down another ladder to a lower catwalk and turn the valve there. The valve on the higher catwalk is to turn off steam in a tunnel connected to the lower catwalk, where you find a dead scientist and can get the shotgun early.
@5:02 -- that schedule is.... interesting... I've never seen it before?
I like the xen part in this game because of the chumtoad’s lair
the funny thing about stealing all the ammo at the start is that if you use all of it to shoot the box in your locker, it reveals a chumtoad, which is a cut xen npc
theres also one in opposing force if you shoot about 2-3 smg clips into the vent cover opposite and above the entrance to the lambda core teleportation room just before you see gordon make his jump to xen
Yeahh, I knew about the Chumtoad in the locker but didn't know it took so much ammo. I ended up just 'impulse 101'ing it
Yet another banger from the future 500k subs youtuber!
11:23 there is another valve somewhere else that turn off the steam. I only found this out on my fifth playthrough of Blue Shift.
I've gotta check this out, I've only heard negatives about this installment... Thanks for the video!
11:23
I have played Blue Shift multiple times and have always been able to turn the pipes off.
11:18 there is a way to turn them off, i only found out about it after coming back and exploring around a little bit tho
God your channel is so good how did I not find this sooner.
Not going to lie, Blue Shift was my favorite section during Half-Life as a kid. I guess the reason why I liked it more was because I was able to be the security guy and view things differently. Barney wasn't meant to be heroic or even brave during the job until the aliens came.
That Shepard guy sure sounds important hopefully he makes a more detailed appearance in the sequel of opposing force
That elevator puzzle had me stumped for 3 days. One of the hardest ones in gaming history
I'm the kind of weird guy that like Blue Shift more than Opposing Force.
Who else is still waiting for his review on Half-Life 2 lol?
Me
@@ThatTravGuy Hey btw I love your videos man
"good luck mr calhoun! i'll see you on the other side" for some reason that line stuck with me
