I'm happy to see that you guys are enjoying this video, and that it's performing well! I know some of you were waiting for a long time with this one, so I really hope it was worth the wait for y'all.
would you like vodka, comrade trav?
Great work!

Heya, here's a thought... Focus on the game, and leave your political opinions for Reddit.
Referring to randy as grease is much better than pinning the crime of Duke Nukem forever on hatsune miku
Sank-yuu!
bo-pi-bo
Randy is the Donald Trump of the video game industry, they are both of hated and love by many people because “they stayed true to America’s identity” but I doubt that Randy will get a angry mob killing people who made him lose his job and storming buildings
THAT LARD OF CRISCO MADE DUKE FOREVER!!!!! HE MUST DIE
..ok, I'm missing a shit ton of context, when did Sega get ahold of Duke nukem forever
I had a headcanon when I was younger that the suit batteries worked by charging a layer of a non-Newtonian fluid similar to Oobleck, but filled with magnetized particles. When an impact is detected, the suit rapidly pulses an electric current through the fluid layer, slowing the bullet down like anti-lock brakes on a car.
Dunno how well that would work IRL, though.
i just thought that it was electric kevlar wtf
That sounds....really interesting honestly.
nanomachines, son
they harden in response to physical trauma
@@spacetrainbaby3737 i guess you are not so bad after all, YOU ARE BATSHIT INSANE!

I also find it very amusing how Gearbox recy- "recreated" the final boss of this game for Borderlands 1's final encounter.
Huh, I never thought about that until you bought it up, I totally see the similarities
I also never thought about that lmao and your right, it's kinda just the gene worm again...
Oh fuck.... youre right...
@@thatemocat He is talking Bout' the boss fight from Half - Life Opposing force, not the original.
HEY! HEY! Accurate, but HEY! They are SLIGHTLY different. See, one is called “Gene Worm” and the other is “The Destroyer”. Totally different!
In all seriousness, I am more surprised Borderlands did not add more references from Opposing Forces. Perhaps Tiny Tina’s will give us some Adrian Shepard easter eggs.
"Eh, it's only a flesh wound."
Otis says, a moment before blasting his attacker directly in the skull.
This is game is tied with Half Life 2 as my favorite Half Life game. The reason is because the amount of unique weapons and things you can do felt like a giant improvement in the Half Life formula. Such a shame they never used some of the stuff in this game for future use.
You may never know. Also this is my favourite Half Life game too, as you can tell.
Honestly I prefer HL1 and it's expansions over HL2s'. The gameplay in HL2 can feel repetitive at times.
ye
@@a.q.2330 I concur. Even Blue Shift was decent despite being underwhelming compared to Opposing Force.
@@a.q.2330 totally agrees. HL2 is still my favorite in terms of enemies and atmosphere, but the first Half-Life wins by far in terms of gameplay
I still remember when they updated the game *20 fucking years later* finally allowing mac players to beat the game and improving the npc pathfinding, allowing you to more easily bring entire squads of soldiers across levels.
yeah, that was painful to play all through that, dealing with foxtrot uniform, and its tunnels, only to find out you couldnt beat the game, at least without cheats
You can play opposing force on fast food now?
Ahh... Writing out 'Traitors Die' in MRE cheese... These guys are definitely marines.
The funny part here is the HECU is stated to be a USMC unit if I recall, so it's more like the black ops (whatever branch they're from, don't think it's made clear like with the HECU) basically taunting the Marines in their own native art form.
@@chaosvolt The Black Ops are basically just """special forces""".
@@chaosvolt black ops are CIA.

"Master Chief, mind telling me what you're doing with that SMG?"
"Sir, creating a time paradox."
"see you in 20 years for chemotherapy"
hahaha, as if VA would ever willingly cover chemo
"Welcome to the Marines, kids. Where we shoot, burn, electrocute, and expose you to toxic radiation." I think that's how they trained the Master Chief.
That was indeed the Chief’s Mjolnir armour training exercise in the first book (Fall of Reach), complete with airstrikes too.
I love that every fan of Opposing Force has to mention they hate Randy before continuing.
Sorry, I meant Mr. Greasebucket
"Race X wasn't even involved in Xen"
Race X has an anchor point in Xen that presumably acts like the Xen relay in Blue Shift and Half-Life 2 -- it's probably needed to get their forces to Earth in the first place. It's got an orange Xen crystal on top of a floating island that powers a purple portal underneath it where Sprites fly in and out.

23:11 YOU KEPT THE GORDON YAHOO FROM THE HALF-LIFE VIDEO
I AM SO HAPPY
The reason the suit battery drains is because it uses non-explosive reactive armor. There's two plates with a void between them. When the outer plate is struck, it contacts the inner plate, which discharged electrical energy that then dampens the force of the impact.
Suit juice go brrrr
27:23 The heavy eating his sandwich sound effect somehow made me burst out of laughter I need help
Remember kids: don't consume excesive grease, at least this is good grease
Yep. Opposing Force (and the Half Life expansions in general) are the kind of grease used to cook fish & chips. Most of Randy’s grease (e.g. Halo 1’s original downgraded PC port, DNF 2011, Duke 3D World Tour, Borderlands, Aliens Colonial Marines and how Randy treats everyone) is the kind you find blocking a sewer after it clings to toilet wipes that have snagged on the tunnel/pipe walls, like a poo based version of cholesterol arteries.
@@lionocyborg6030 i agree on everything except borderlands, and borderlands 3 os in my top ten games of all time

Opt for olive oil in cooking not grease
Now this... this puts a smile on my face
hey man nice to see you
Damn you watch Trav too?
This is one of my favorite Half-Life games. I love the additions it made and it sucks that it never got a follow-up. Adrian Shephard is ripe with potential and it would be great to see him in a spin-off title or a main game as one of the main characters. Hell, I think an epic battle between Gordon and Adrian would be amazing to see.
yes
He was going to be the protagonist of return to ravenholm
@@tivvy2vs21 I knew about that before, and the video also says it. But the game never came to fruition.
@@superplayerex2431 I didnt get to that when I read, sorry
Since Valve will never touch on the lore canon side my headcannon is that race x were the first combine forces sent to earth (they look like synths already so). When they failed to terraform earth into a suitable environment for long term stay, these units we know stayed enough just to fight the 7 hour war and then died or bailed coz earth is not suitable for their survival and the combine started to use humans as troops with synths unaffected by the environment
I love that you can use the barnacle to skip the entire mortar section if you grapple to the mortar operator instead of going through the bunker
22:58 On the topic of world building, I don't know if you realized or not, but the charger next to the HEV charger in boot camp is said to be a commercial charger. Really makes you think......
If we were to use reality at all, and just given the darker aspects of the series, no way in hell they weren’t also military contractors.
i mean the chopper at the beginning of the tram ride pretty much proves they had some deals with the military
@@OmegaCoolsterDX Not to mention a slideshow in Portal 1 near GLaDOS’s chamber shows that Black Mesa and Aperture Science often competed for Defence Ministry contracts, with the former usually being the winner thanks to Aperture’s terrible management, especially when Cave Johnson was still alive.
Trav turning into Civvie in 16:00 , this proves that Trav is actually Civvie 12
Opposing Force was when Gearbox was at their prime.
Wow. That's saying something. X/
/s
Something else about the barnacle grapple is that if you walk around it while it’s on the shelf, you can see that shepherd holds it by shoving his hand up its ass: There’s no animation but you can see the orifice on the back of the weapon’s world model. The black Mesa version of the hive hand referenced this and even gave one of the Barney’s funny dialog if he saw you pick it up, such as acting (naturally) grossed out to jokingly asking “You want a cigarette? Not you, the hand.”
That Vortigaunt being launched into the air made me burst out laughing
when i played, i didnt do the boot camp (thinking it was just a reskinned hazard course like blue shift), so i had no idea i could alt fire the pistol for laser sight
I love sniping shock troopers, one of my favorite things to do in opfor.
The second you mentioned Gearbox, I immediately sighed and said, "Hello, Randy."
Shephard in another reality: "good, thats one less loose end"
In another:
"I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite store in the Citadel."
The "friends unit" joke made me actually double over with laughter. Thanks, Trav, just what I needed! :D
Fighting along side your brothers in arms, killing advanced aliens, and defeating the black ops. It’s all amazing to me in every way. For an expansion pack, it’s hella good.
24:33 Trav: “Yeah dude, nice priorities. Can your grant money fix this door for me?”
Scientist: “No! *dies when light explodes and shocks him”*
Trav: “So, what does exploding mean? It is that a yes? Do you explode twice if you want to say no?”
Thumbs up to the 10 other people who get that one.
i love that the spore launcher is another unique variation of gun mechanics; it has endless ammo but you still have to reload a finite amount manually. we didnt have that combination before.
"I'd rather play Blue Shift still." I legit went 'WOW that's a bad take.' Blue Shift was just Half Life lite, Op4 actually did its own thing and stands on its own far better.
Love the review all the same!
WOOOOOOOO heck yeah, this is such a good channel and I love when you cover half life things :)
The MTM-8 Power Loader is my favorite part of the OG HL games. Yes, the beetle bots have a name, and yes I was ecstatic to them in Black Mesa. I was deeply disappointed when it was missing from Project Lambda's train sequence.

"Its better to cum in the sink, than to sink in the cum." -Master Chief
This video dropped JUST when I was really sad and bored while sitting home being ill, and I get a notif - That Trav Guy just uploaded a new video! Always makes my day :D
For some reason, the 17 second stretch from 16:00-16:17 was one of the funniest thing bugs I’ve experienced on RUclips in a long time
[SHEPHERD] COLONEL I CREATE A TIME PARADOX! 23:20
[COLONEL] YOU DID WHAT!?
You're right about Black Mesa being a military contractor.
I think it would be cool if they made adrian a boss in a later half life game, being used as a tool by the GMan, cause of how long he was detained he would've gone mad and maybe even brainwashed to attack like a man possessed.
“It smells worse than a chili cook off.” “Otis what the fuck does that mean?”
22:02 It's the marines. Yes, Adrian Sheppard is a crayon eater.
Opposing Force is the best expansion to Half-Life, and I like it a little more then the base game because it's the Half Life experience....on crack. Seriously, you do many of the same things, but now it's sped up. Go to work; disaster strikes, try to escape, fail, government stooges attempt to cover it up, deal with a monster in a pit, go to Xen, kill a disappointing final boss.
Yep, that's a Half-Life.
You forgort about get talked to by mysterious being nobody understands
boss is very much not disappointing.
I love how the funnt guard just stops for a second and whips out his pistol faster than a cowboy
32:47 that poor vortigaunt got launched into the stratosphere
I thought black Mesa being a military contractor was obvious. You have military or police small arms and explosives all over the place, there are rockets/missiles being launched or stored, and the tau cannon and gluon gun in development. It would be more shocking if they weren’t selling stuff to the military.
13:48 I always use that as an insult lmao 🤣
33:09 you missed the small Easter egg about the Dead body of 'Gina Cross' from 'Half-Life: Decay'
It is canon by Randy saying that she did actually died from Teleporting to Xen and drowing.
I love shout out to Civvie 11 and calling Randy greasy...which Randy is.
21:11 playing spy in a nutshell
Gordon is a "highly trained professional" in Half Life, a "new guy" in Decay, and also "employee of the month" in Opp. Force. I feel conflicted.
google translate mod for this game is the best way to exsprince it. with quotes such as. "are you my eyeball child" "wedding pistol" "the bodies are only a minute away"
One of the best expansion packs of all time.
I can’t wait for the HL2 videos! Keep up the good work!
Great video! It’s a shame how OPFor is essentially scrapped from main canon, I really thought it was way better than Blue Shift and even matched up to standard Half Life.
Corporal Shepherd gets the attention he deserves today!
Now the last HL1 expansion to cover is HL:Decay and we have ourselves a complete HL1 story review from Trav!
Soon (tm)
I like how servers for these are still open and active AND fun
11:07 I don't know if that was an intentional Hawkeye reference, but I am counting it as one.
It was :)
29:48
"So no med?"
**CLANG**
This is the only half life thing I use HD models on since it makes more sense for the U.S Millitary to have M4A1's instead of MP5's
I feel like the gearbox + valve reference was golden as is, its placement was beautiful not putting it self as an easter egg but a mechanic to progress in the game.
A fan remake is underway by the way. It is called "Operation Black Mesa", by Tripmine Studios.
I have to say, the "Alright, violence it is!" gag is one of my favorite trav moments
NEW TRAV GUY VIDEO!!! LETS GOOOOOOO! I SIMPLY *ADORE* YOUR WORK MAN!
Cant forget the drill Sargent is voiced by jon saint jon. So big the cat got himself into the military
Okay, call me crazy, but that "now dammit now!" line just before the Opposing Force "Blast Pit" is actually a reference to Die Hard, where Sargent Powell is reversing his car in a panic because someone just landed on the windshield of his car.
Shooting the propane tank on the engineer causes him to explode
the mad lads at gearbox did it, they gave you duke nukem's pistol as the deagle and I love them for it, thats awesome dude lol
Oh man, I didn't even make that connection!
AX3: _"Where is the Cease and Desist, CV11?"_
HAMMER: *"Megaman X8 video when, Trav?"*
I've played and loved every half-life game since my demo disc in 1998..... and I NEVER KNEW the spore launcher had a secondary fire mode until this video.....
Thank you haha!
13:47 " I'm going to piss in your sink " lmaooo
The sewer section with the big pig guys and pitdrones gives me nightmares.
Man, the drill sarge (Jon St John) had to have taken direct inspiration from Mike Judge's "Coach Buzzcut" character on Beavis & Butthead.
i love this thumbnail, the art is amazing
Follow @Gamerbot200 on Twitter, he draws them!
I love Opposing Force, especially having the idea of Race X being enslaved by the Combine, used for scoutting worlds.
Black Mesa is also a Government facility listed as a private company
I will now start referring to Adrian as Schlatt. Why? Cuz last time I checked Schlatt is also 22 y/o and the game released in 1999….we all know what Schlatt did in ‘99
I've always felt this expansion goes on for a bit too long, not helping is that while half-life's combat is good it's not really meant to be so front and center.
7:00 i dont think black mesa being a military contractor is something anyone is debating
-the huge armory in surface tension that contains snark nests (e.g. proof that they're trying to fund the xen exploration via weaponization)
-the huge armory in surface tension in general lol
-the tau/gauss dev lab and laser/vaporizer dev labs in questionable ethics
-the gluon gun dev lab in lambda core
16:21 TRAV THERE"S AN SMG RIGHT THERE
A video essay on OP4 in 2021, these games just dont die and im here for it
This game was the one time I actually killed the scientists and security guards unless they were a required NPC
I killed my teammates and reloaded like 20 times in this game their AI kept sucking
“Black Mesa is also a military contractor. Prove me fucking wrong” Well, yeah. I’m pretty sure they are, I mean why else would the government fund them.
This might be the best Opposing Force content I've ever seen. Frequently laughed out loud. Subscribed
We can’t prove you wrong… because Black Mesa is a Military contractor.
Fun fact: you can "kill" the tentacles in opfor and the the original half life if you shoot them with the revolver or desert eagle
Does it freeze them in place or make them disappear into their burrow for a short time? I think I did that with the MP5 as a kid.
You should absolutely play the mod Field Intensity. I think it's what child-you imagined OpFor would be.
My personal mindcannon about race-X is that they where a species that the combine colonized, probably slightly related to the vortigaunts yet created to be more effective in combat so they can prepair the planets so the combine can Go after
At 31:42 I was so caught off guard by the joel clip my brain spaced out for the next like 3 seconds
Nice video, keep up the good work!
15:00 you can feel the hesitation behind not killing that scientist
“I’m gonna piss in your sink.”
That’s a threat I didn’t want to hear.
I really enjoy opposing force for the most part, I think its one of the best expansion packs to exist, with new weapons, a new story and new allies but I do have some issues with it:
shock troopers are a pain, sure a sniper to the eye is an instant kill, but when theres multiple around every corner (like that yard area after the voltigore tunnels) they get annoying and tedious to fight, especially with the shock grub that acts like a headcrab until it dies (except for the first), plus their grenades aren't the best. They do look cool and have their own unique language which is nice however.
the wrench is a cool idea, but it gets completely outdone by the knife, which you pick up not long after (my opinion)
some of the areas with black ops feel like a pain, even more so when female spec ops are added in. some areas feel like they purposely didn't give you enough supplies beforehand to make it way harder than it has to be with spec ops, plus the lack of radio comms means its a case of "are they around this corner?" since you have no way of knowing their location beforehand, which can lead to some cheap corner shots
the new weapons are really cool, but it feels like balance kind of went screwy (probably because of the new eneimes) the sniper is just a hitscan crossbow, so you don't even need to worry about travel time, the displacer either can be used for emergency supplies or for actual damage, but since its alt costs so much you rarely can use both in situations, and the saw is just the saw, being able to shred anything in a matter of seconds
and what is up with that barnacle grappling hook? Sure, its a cool gimmick, and you can argue its a safe way to kill headcrabs without using ammo (as shown when you first get it) but its way too awkward to use, I think you can use the mousewheel scroll to make the "rope" looser, but its either min or max (to me anyway) so you'll end up taking fall damage either way in most situations in which you use it, and you'll probably still just use melee to kill headcrabs
and last but not least, allies. Sure, they're cool when their pathing works, but I feel its too much hassle to get them to a door I need opening, or getting them into a lift to take them to the next area (but that goes for half life as a whole). Plus it feels like they can die too easy, unlike you, they don't have much in terms of self preservation, so they end up taking a lot of hits you would avoid (again half life as a whole) and it feels like they aren't used enough, or when they are used, the enemy is overwhelming anyway. Again, the yard area gives you 3 allies, but so many shock troopers and a voltigore means that you'll probably kill them all anyway making your allies redundant if they aren't already dead.
fun fact:yes black mesa was a military contractor
no dead seriously, where else did the funding come from
