- Barney Calhoun is one of Half-Life's most iconic characters. Through his actions, he made a huge impact for humanity during both the Black Mesa Incident and the following Combine Invasion of Planet Earth.
What is Barney's backstory? How did the resonance cascade change him, and what role did the take during The Uprising of The Resistance of humanity? In this lore episode, I explore Barney Calhoun in the Half-Life universe.

It seems that Resonance Cascade is taking place in Kazakhstan. We was shut down from internet, and don't know what is going on. Only now I can write this comment. What's happened in my country in Kazakhstan? Resonance Cascade!??
@@singularity6305 the fuck, didnt even know all that was happening there
the fact that Barney remembered an extremely mundane offer he made to Gordon 20 years ago is impressive
Yet another thing that makes Barney great.
Makes sense since at the end of blue shift, he see Gordon being dragged away by military troops that are going to kill him.and Barney can't do anything to save him and for 20 years, he likey had that on his mind thinking he couldn't save Gorden.
Maybe many things about that day before the resonance cascade are remembered, because those were the last "normal" moments they had
Sometimes you remember random things from years, even decades ago. Even stuff you or someone else said.
and how a scientist remembers his microwave casserole being blown up
This is why Barney is just one hell of a character. for sure Gordon and Shepard deserve their spotlight moments but for Barney to go through all of that with basic firearms and armour, no special suit to help him and go through what the other boys did only to witness the portal storms, 7 hour war, destruction of Earth and enslavement of humanity for approx 20 years and still want to fight...
Rumour has it, the Resonance Cascade happened because they tried to teleport Barney's huge balls
Well to be fair he barely had any interactions with radioactive materials
True, but far too much sewer waste and who knows what all that teleporting did to him in the old labs
Despite his resources he's such the resilient individual that he later became the bigger picture of things is nothing short but astonishing... Isn't it?
Guy has more balls then some give him credit for. Wish I was ever that pinch of badass in whatever perilous situation like him or the boys, but currently I'm sometimes such the witless person that one of my choices would have led me to my death probably.
Professionals have standards, am I right
Huge ass balls huge ass heart for barney too
Barney "The Legend" Calhoun. If Alyx is the right hand of Gordon, Barney is surely his left. Great video game character.
Kleiner is Gordon's right foot and Eli is his left

BARNEY IS A DINOSOUR FROM OUR IMAGINATION
Yep. Just.. your familiar, day to day good man.
When good men go to war
Take into account, Gordon has a super advanced power armor, Shepherd had the HECU armor, Barney only had a bullet vest and a plastic helmet
There is that too
That man is a legend indeed
The man of steel
Well tbf Both Barney and Shepherd were trained in and likely experienced combat, shepherd extremely highly so. Barney also had to deal with much less, than Gordon and Adrian as he escaped pretty early on, before adrian and the hecu even showed up and before Race X, or even the alien grunts showed up. So like the 15% mark of Half Life 1, Barney is already gone or atleast on his way out.Thats not to mention both Adrian and Gordon had bosses (incredibly powerful aliens) to fight at the end of the game while Barney didn’t. Gordon was the only one who had no reason to survive.
Barney had upgraded his armor to have both combine metrocop suit and black mesa bullet vest. His armor is double layered and his helmet is merged with his mask, giving him gas and head protection superior to normal metrocops.
Anyone notice how after escaping the Black Mesa incident, surviving the 7 Hour War, living through the brutal enslavement of the Combine, and meeting Gordon 20 years after he last saw him, the first thing he thought of in his brain was to remind Gordon about the beer he owned him. Must've been a good beer.
It was probably more than just a beer...😏🥴

@@jakehorne8637 Grease Shift 2
Considering Barney was just a generic guard in HL1 and did not even have a name until Blue Shift, Valve adding Barney as a specific character in Half Life 2 indicates pretty clear to me that valve considers Blue Shift mostly canon at least.
I wish, there was a side chapter for Barney in Half Life 2, showing him infiltrating civil protection, helping with building up the resistance and ending with :"... about that beer I owe ya." and Gordon looking surpised at the player.
That would have been fantastic

Legends say that the true ending of the half life series will be when Barney is finally able to get gordon the beer he owed him
Maybe one day we'll see it happen
@@Skyrionn I would kill for that to be Half Life 3's ending. You and barney go on a suicide mission to destroy the combine once and for all, possibly rigging the borealis to implode and destroy something pivotal to the combine which would massively push them back. You ram the borealis into the structure and set it to blow. Barney realises that there is no way out and he chucks you a bottle of beer. I think the game could end with you drinking a beer as the explosion occurs. Maybe the G-Man steps in to either stop the explosion or save you two. Maybe he allows this big explosion to be the first one in the game that doesnt stop time.
it's called half life anti climax.
@@Skyrionn the beer is a lie
@@daleicious1528 you know what's a lie?
THE CAKE!!!! THEY LIED TO HER ABOUT THE CAKE 🎂 >=(
I think barney's role is to show what a true "free man" can do when not being manipulated by the G-man. Barney Escaped from black mesa without the aid of the G-man, something Shepard and Gordon can't say; but then again, maybe the G-man left barney alone, as his role as a civil protection unit would be needed in order to get Gordon on the right path.
Honestly. Given Barney's Relation to Gordon. G man saw him as important to his plans but replaceable if needed.
Maybe gman put him on the blie shift so as to seperate him from Gordon as if both had met up during the incident, they would have definitely teamed up.
BlueShift matches well on how Barney turned from a normal Security Guard doing his duties to a fighter that is helping to save Humanity. Too bad Rosenberg wasn't there see it all :[
Overall, Barney is one of my best favorite Half-Life characters!
He's my favorite for sure.
@No CS:S Sadly to say, Valve didn't really get too involved with Gearbox's creations and its characters meaning Rosenberg, Walter, Simmons were just Gearbox characters Valve didn't go in about on how it could affect their Half-Life 2 ERA
It's possible to assume that they're somewhere in a Combine City working with the Resistance OR they most likely didn't survive the Seven-Hour-War.
@No CS:S Otis died in Opposing Force, sadly.
I don't like it that Valve didn't include almost any of the HL1 DLC characters in the sequels. Shephard, Rosenberg, Bennett, Simmons, Keller, Cross, Green... hell, even Otis. Too much great potential wasted, I don't even know if they're decided whether the Gearbox games are canon or not. To me they will always be canon.
@@tk-hf4oz I saw a headcanon where Odessa is Otis in disguise.
@@standardzombie3454 I always headcanon it as the Gearbox characters winding up in a different part of the world from the HL2 crew. Though one has to wonder how the hell Eli, Kleiner, Barney, Alex, Mossman, and Magnusson all wound up in Eastern Europe together in the first place. Maybe Rosenberg is running his own Resistance cell somewhere else in the world.
I love that part where Gordon jumps down that chasm that Dog holds open to get to the Citadel and you just here Barney go "If you see Dr. Breen, tell em I said f**k you." Except you can't here him drop the f-bomb because Dog drops the gate. Classic.
I personally consider both expansions to be canon. Like you said, Shepard being referenced in Blue Shift basically confirms that and Barney from both games is clearly supposed to be the same guy. Great analysis btw 🔥🔥 Barney's always been my favorite side character in the series.
I'd agree that both are canon. It just adds something amazing to the world.
I've tried to add my own voice to these videos too and it seems to be working
I consider them Canon, but the issue that other people have is Race x
I really like the common thread of the G-Man through all the main characters. To him, Gordon, Eli, and Alyx are pawns, powerful entities he can manipulate. Adrian is someone he respects, and gives a mutually beneficial, if not manipulative deal. Barney is someone he ignored or overlooked, but who managed to forge his own path and slip through the cracks.
I always said that Barney Calhoun was my favorite character but I never knew the lore so it's nice that some people explain Barney's story
Now you have a true reason. He really is a perfect character
Barney's story is far more impressive than people give it credit for given that he was responsible for the only shown instance of Black Mesa personnel successfully escaping the facility after the resonance cascade, and unlike Gordon or Adrian he toughed it out through the Seven Hour War and was instrumental in establishing the Resistance movement and starting the uprising.
You never disappoint with all the Half-Life lore. Can’t wait for more.
You should probably correct that one part that says half life lores you should replace it with half life lore videos

@Poor Quality Edits half Life 2 episode 2 episode 1
Barney just radiates good friendly vibes to me
Thank you for breaking him down to the bare essentials
I think,no matter the scrunity, these DLCs should always be considered something of canon. Half life 1 would be very barren if not for blue shift and Opposing force.
100% It adds a completely new and interesting perspective to the story and world building.
Barney, alongside Gordon and the others, are one of the early examples I can think for the "In the moment of danger, we show who we really are", in the videogames industry
What about Adrian
Adrien was trained for it
I view the Gearbox expansions as canon, Gearbox was officially licensed to do the games so same with the alterations they do in the PS2 version as in Half-Life 2 we never see the all the old HEV chargers (just the front plate of one of them) and we never see the old healing stations either.
I agree
The more I think about it, I'm starting to think that Barney buying Gordon a beer was figurative, similar to "doing someone a solid" - a favor.
Barney was probably one of if not THE best factor in the fight against the combine, buying the best beer of all: Rerouting Gordon away from the train to Nova Prospekt.
I do hope we get to see him again when Half-Life 3 comes around, since VALVe did confirm that it is a possibility, and I assume they are making plans, and coming up with ideas for the game and the story.
And as for the topic of canonicity, I've come up with a (possibly flawed) philosophy:
"If it expands on the story, it's most likely canon. If it interferes with the story, it's most likely not canon."
I'm new and a bit late to the HL craze and I'm also just starting out to play the HL games, but I gotta say, this video makes me respect Barney a looooot more
I was always unsure how "modified" Barney was by the combine - and whether he'd ever be a surprise antidote to the abilities of the advisors due to implants or augmentations
It's been 14 years though - i'm at peace with the story ever getting wrapped-up, even after completing HLA
Probably unmodified as civil protection arnt required to be modified unless they want there rank higher
Civil Protection officers aren't modified. It's the Overwatch Soldiers (and more specifically, the Elites) that have been modified. The soldiers also had their memories erased, so they wouldn't feel remorse for harming their former kind.
Freeman, Shepherd, and Calhoun seem to be very important characters in the story of Half-Life their stories are intertwined. All 3 saved many lives through their actions.
Three of the best characters
I'm surprised that there hasn't been a Left 4 Dead-like co-op game with them and Alyx as the playable protagonists.
It is awesome to play as a physicist as Gordon but Barney is compelling too as a juxtaposition. He's just a blue collar guy trying to survive but he catches on to his situation quickly.
You know, with how well barney adapted and dealt with the situations he was put In you'd think he had prior military and or combat experience but my man's was just raw dogging and interdimensional alien invasion and fighting through waves of trained HECU marines (with only his training btw). Only to survive another interdimensional alien invasion and fight again, and the thing that gives him nightmares is a failed experiment with a cat. Actual mad lad
He knows the facility very well, too. Like in 'Nam, our boy had home field advantage against the HECUs. Vents, structure semetry, plain old familiarity. Still makes him badass, of course, but clever as well.
Probably my favorite character. Also one of the things that made me enjoy blue shift is knowing that you are playing as this guy (i had already played hl2)
It's a shame not a lot of people have played Blue Shift. He's a great character.
It's nice to see a perspective of someone escaping successfully from Black Mesa
What an abominable shame it is that Return to Ravenholm was cancelled.
Some idiot listened to critics who whine about things as a job, like that's not a conflict of interest.
Frankly, I can't believe they cancelled a HALF LIFE GAME because "zombies are overdone".
Might as well set fire to a pile of money, because that's what Arkane would have otherwise made.
No honestly I couldn't be happier it was cancelled, the problem with the zombies in that game was that they completely lost the half life identity. Feels more like Arkane wanted to make a game qnd just randomly happened to be allowed to use the half life universe but had no real wish to
A moment of silence for all the Barney clones that didn't make it out of Black Mesa... And also Otis...
Can we get a video on Otis? Even if it's literally just you saying he likes donuts, it would be pretty cool.
RIP
I feel like you misunderstand the extent of "The suppression field". It does not only shoot beams, it also suppressed the human's ability to reproduce, a major component of the combine occupation
In a perfect world, Gordon would still have his ponytail, Barney would buy Gordon a beer...and humanity would not be on the brink of being exterminated.
But sadly this is not a perfect world. It is a world where someone still needs to buy his friend a beer
In Episode 2, right after defending the rocket from the strider attack once you enter the white forest base you can somewhat hear barney say "Good job Gordon." but you cannot see him so idk maybe he's alive
It was a error confirmed by Marc Laidlaw.
It always bugged me that Barney never ditches his CP uniform. The first time I played I remember always expecting him to turn up in a ragged old security uniform, or at least a rebel uniform. But he never does.
I mean, the rebels literally wear CP vests on top of their original citizen outfits
But yeah, at the very least Barney could've just stamped a lambda symbol on his uniform
I guess in case of a undercover mission going haywire Barney can slip on the CP mask on and pretend he convoys "prisoners"
8:45 "fixes the machinery" mans literally walks into the elevator and presses a button.
He's just talented I guess
It makes me sad to think that barney kept gordon's crowbar for 20 years thinking his friend was gone forever.
Barney was the most valiant hero we probably have seen in half life, barney fought in the black mesa incident and saved a lot of people, this shows a lot about him, he could have escaped alone, but he insisted in get his job done and save as much people he could just to after fight in the 7 hour war, then he would infiltrate into civil protection probably to provide the resistance with information and save civilians who would get in trouble with the combine, i still wonder what happened to him after episode 1.
The narration and visual detail is great, i love
It's taken a while but it is finally coming together
Valve really needs to make a side game for Barney, showing how he managed to infiltrate civil protection.
I'd love to play one too
Imagine if it ends with "about that beer I owed you"
I used to have really bad body dysmorphia until I learned barney calhoun is roughly my height and weight. I am made in God's image
Underrated character and always one of my favorites. I'm glad you dedicated a video about him.
Barney Calhoun is the luckiest protagonist in the whole series, because the G-man and his employers don't need him
Please do decay. Maybe even a story about Rosenberg between Decay and Blue shift. Decay is basically the first part of Rosenberg’s Story during the resonance cascade.
Spoilers of Half Life: Alyx:
Why do I feel that… after Alyx being gone and Eli alive, the perfect partner for Gordon’s next adventure is Barney. I feel that the next game (VR or PC) we will go to the Borealis with him and got to know him more.
Why? You may ask
1.We never seen Eli in a combat scenario, he is disable even
2. Kleiner’s friend is Barney and knows a bit of Dogg
3. Perfect opportunity for bringing back the “beer that he owns us” in the finale or maybe… during his sacrifice!
This is just a good reason why I favor Barney Calhoun as a character!
I agree

It's most interesting that the g man selects people like Gordon and Adrian as singularly capable tools, but ignores those like Barney that may not be quite as capable as a lone operator, but capable nonetheless, and importantly capable of much more as a leader as well. I feel like those kind of people have a reach too great to manipulate and control the same way
It’s honestly a shame that the last we see or hear of Barney is at the end of Episode 1. We don’t know if he made it out alright. Episode 2 is more focused on introducing Magnusson, the hunters, and Gman’s heart-to-heart, so there just isn’t ever a chance to mention Barney.
I think Mark Leidlaw’s Epistle 3 may mention what happened to him, but with Alyx out now, who knows if any of that is canon?
Loving these videos so much
While playing Half-Life 1, I headcanoned that all of the security officers we see are Barney Clones and everyone is just a Eli, Kleiner, Barney, or Coomer clone except for Freeman and Breen.

Now that's a well made video! I like that you attempted to visualize every part you talked about. The HL lore may not be the most plausible storyline, especially when it comes to the dates, but your video didn't have any inconsistencies. It would be cool though if you'd pick some more songs as the background music. Lab Practicum is a great choice, but if you're recording longer videos, I suggest using some other HL tracks like "Vague Voices", "Ravenholm Reprise" or even "Space Ocean". Anyway, I really enjoyed that one and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Cheers!

I love this video about Barney's lore. I'm watching it several times as I'm drawing my own version of Lauren from Blue Shift :) Like all of Half Life's characters I love the backstory and growth of it's characters but I think Barney will always have the best development out of all the characters. He's a true blue hero and he cares a lot for people. That's why he's my favorite.
Great Video! Blue Shift always felt part of the half life universe to Me. It's different with opposing force, when it was released I LOVED the expansion, playing as the marines amazing. I was so hooked with Half Life that every single player campaign was a blast to me. With HL2 the lore expanded and the whole Alien Race X thing now looks silly.
